We acknowledge the enormous work that outgoing mayor and mayoress David and Marilyn Ayers undertook to bring our district forward and we look ahead to the continued dedication and commitment to our district’s needs by our new representatives. Iammeeting with the New Zealand Transport Agency for an update after the public meeting Icalled on behalf of the Make SH1 Safer Committee in September to voice our concerns around accidents and dangerous nearmisses from Kaiapoi to the Ashley Bridge. Ihave personally requested that these improvements are expedited to be implemented within the next 12 months; that asafer pedestrian crossing be provided across SH1 in Woodend urgently; and that funding is guaranteed to address the safety concerns raised at my meeting. In areport to last week’s meeting, finance and business supportmanager Jeff Millward saidthe 2018/19 year focused on the buildingof infrastructure,with accompanyingwork to further develop‘‘the valueadd servicesthe councilsupplies on behalf of the community’’. Highlights include adoptingthe KaiapoiTownCentre Plan andstarting workon the Rangiora Town CentrePlan. Regenerationwork in Kaiapoi is continuing,withsportsfieldsand the BMXtrackcompleted, the plantingof theHondaForest under way, andwork to improve the use of the Kaiapoi River ongoing. Open roadlinkswere established, including the West Belt extensionin Rangiora,and the FeldwickDrive realignment, and reconstructionof CourtenayDriveand Jones Street in Kaiapoi. Therewas significant investment in theOxford Rural No. 1watersupply’s drinking water scheme,anew ultraviolet treatmentplan in Waikuku, andthe joining of the Pegasus and Woodend schemes. They were greeted by Waimakariri District Council chief executive Jim Palmer and council governance manager Sarah Nichols. Although voting could be done by post, electoral boxes were provided in council service centres nationwide for those who had left it too late to vote via the postal system. About 500 people a day had used the electoral box in the council service centre’s foyer in Rangiora to vote, Mr Palmer said on Saturday. ‘‘It has been the best turnout for several elections. We are bucking the trend (for poor voter turnout), which is great.’’ He thought that one reason for the increase in turnout was because voters had to choose anew mayor in Waimakariri. ‘‘David (Ayers) will be ahard act to follow.
