SELWYN TIMES Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Wednesday October 23 2019 19 Darfield beaten by Cheviot after batting collapse • By Jacob Page CHEVIOT HELD on to beat Darfield by 34 runs at Ohoka’s Mandeville Sports Grounds as rain continued to interrupt the first few weeks of the Canterbury Country premier 45-over competition on Saturday. Only one of the four scheduled games was possible after heavy rain on Friday night left many grounds too wet for play for week three fixtures. Ironically, it was Darfield’s first game of the season and after winning the toss and electing to field they restricted Cheviot to 168 for nine from their 45 overs. A battling 50 for Cheviot’s Will Smith had propelled his team from 113 for 7 to the eventual total. He found good support from No 9 batsman Scott Burnett, who added 23. The Darfield bowlers found earlier success but lacked the big wicket which would have made their chase much easier. Nick Jenkins was the best of the Darfield bowlers taking 3 for 27 while Liam Foulkes also chipped in with two wickets. Darfield’s chase started wellenough with opener Robbie Foulkes making 39. At 74 for two, Darfield had their chance to push for victory but the middle-order offered little substance. The only meaningful contribution was Toby Kars’ 26 at No 5 as all his teammates after him could not make double figures. Darfield lost their final eight wickets for 60 runs. Cheviot’s right-arm quicks Jack Hyde and Charlie Sidey each took three wickets. Darfield captain Mike Pauling said dropped catches, including dropping Smith twice did not help while some soft dismissals with the bat hampered their chase. “There was definitely some rustiness there and things we can improve on. “It felt like that game got away from us,” he said. Win for cyclist Christie Silverware for young karters • By Gordon Findlater LINCOLN KARTER Jacob Douglas and his Canterbury teammate Louis Sharpe returned home from Italy with silverware. Jacob, 14, and Louis, 12, were two of eight New Zealand karters who joined over 400 of their contemporaries from 35 countries at the 17th annual ROK Cup Superfinal event at the Lonato track in the north-east of the country. The event is organised each year by Italian engine manufacturer Vortex. New Zealand has been represented at the event for the past six years but Douglas’ win in the Junior ROK class B final – the Bridgestone Trophy race – is a first. This year it was a case of third time lucky for Jacob who competed in the Mini Rok class in the previous two years, in spite of the young Lincoln ace just missing out on a place in the A final – the cut-off was 34 and after the heat races Jacob was ranked 37. He soon worked his way to the front in the Bridgestone Trophy final race before racing away to a sizable advantage which saw him cross the finish line more than 2sec in front of Australian Luke Pink. Meanwhile, Louis was to continue a strong campaign in Italy after a breakthrough win of his own in the Mini ROK class B final at the Autumn Trophy meeting at the same venue a week earlier. LINCOLN CYCLIST Henrietta Christie made the most of her rival’s misfortune to claim the Calder Stewart cycle series during the final round at Leeston on Sunday. Lying third going into Sunday’s Hell of the South 108km women’s race Christie (Velo Project) needed to finish in the top five to have a chance of overall series victory. Women’s series leader Kate McIlroy was absent due to work commitments and her Lightworkx Development teammate Amy Hollamby who was lying second was ill, resulted in her not racing on Sunday and losing her chance to ride for the series title. Hollamby, who had been in Bali last week for a work-related conference opted not to race after becoming unwell in Saturday’s race with a heart rate that that was very high even when she wasn’t exerting herself. It was won by Hannah Bayard. With a serious chance of overall series success Velo Project women’s team manager Andrew Williams was very pleased with the way Christie and the team rode. “It’s a great result for the team and Henrietta,” he said. “As a team we’ve worked really hard together through the series to help put Henrietta in the position she was in, so it was great to see her and the team deliver today.” The women’s Hell of the South was won by Christie’s Velo Project teammate Elyse Fraser with an impressive solo ride, going alone early on and finishing almost 5min ahead of SPORT CHAMPION: Lincoln’s Henrietta Christie won the Calder Stewart cycle series after making the most of her opportunities on Sunday. second placed Jojo Bauer (Cycle Surgery Bartrams) in the time of 3hr 3min. Christie won the bunch sprint to claim third and claim the overall series to add to her under-19 series jersey, coming home 5min after Bauer.
