In 2013, Target, one of the major retailers in the United States, suffered a severe case of a data security breach, which upon inspection, was because of stolen login credentials from the company’s third-party HVACR vendor. The breach then affected millions of customers, with about 40 million credit and debit card numbers were taken. The company suffered a loss of no less than $400 million. This is the main reason why it is imperative that HVAC contractors are working on measures to ensure the security of their internal systems and make sure they are ready for any possible cyber-attacks. For retailers and building owners, below are some of the steps to secure your HVACR systems. 22
Steps in Securing Your HVAC System Develop an HVACR security plan To develop an HVACR security plan is to ensure the security of your network, most especially if a third-party contractor is involved. The security plan should include restricting access to your building automation system during the installation, programming, updating, maintenance, and repairing of the system. Consider creating an internal support staff that will be trained by the third-party contractor so that no outsiders can have control over your system. Limit physical access Limiting your physical access to the HVACR equipment is also an intuitive way of securing your facility. Restrict access to the areas which require human workers. Consider creating rules on escorts to mechanical rooms and HVACR equipment rooms. It may also come in handy if you use HVACR security cages to fully restrict physical access to anyone in the vicinity.
