Letter from the Editor
"Let's suppose that you were able every night to dream any dream
that you wanted to dream. And that you could, for example, have
the power within one night to dream 75 years of time. Or any length
of time you wanted to have. And you would, naturally as you began
on this adventure of dreams, you would fufill all your wishes. You
would have every kind of pleasure you could conceive. And after several
nights of 75 years of total pleasure each, you would say "Well, that was pretty
great." But now let's have a surprise. Let's have a dream which isn't under
control. Where something is gonna happen to me that I don't know what it's
going to be. And you would dig that and come out of that and say "Wow, that
was a close shave, wasn't it?" And then you would get more and more adventurous,
and you would make further and further out gambles as to what you
would dream. And finally, you would dream ... where you are now. You would
dream the dream of living the life that you are actually living today.”
-Alan Watts
I have listened to pretty much all of the Alan Watts' audios available online.
Many of his speeches resonate with me. I love this one in particular because
of its rather poetic take on life.
Alan Watts was known for interpreting and popularizing Eastern philosophy
for a Western audience in the 30's. He often said that he wished to act as a
bridge between the ancient and the modern, between East and West, and between
culture and nature.
Many people often flirt with the idea of life being maybe after all just a dream.
A dream that connects us to other people. After all we dream on our own, why
would it be so hard to believe that we can dream together? Just look at some
of the most popular quotes and you can be sure they are connected to the notion
of dreams.
“A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together
is reality.” John Lennon
Carly Chaikin
By Alexandra Bonnet
Carly Chaikin, who stars in the critically acclaimed series MR.ROBOT, sat down with us at BELLO
and gave us an inside look into who she is as an actress, writer, producer, and artist. Growing up,
she would compose poems and write stories which represented a big part of her life, something she
would carry with her until today. Her biggest inspiration to become an actress was Angelina Jolie as
she watched her amazing performances! As Chaikin explains,“I have known most of my life that I
wanted to be an actor and I also love producing because I love building something, creating it from
the start and being able to have that input.” She never performed in plays or anything of that
sort--except for one line playing a waitress in a camp performance-- but all that was around her
was pushing her towards who she was meant to become.
As the final season of MR.ROBOT was released
on October 6th, audience's and cast members are
saddened by the thought of it coming to an end.
Chaikin, who plays Eliott’s sister “Darlene”, explains
how amazing this experience has been for her and
what it feels like to see it coming to a finale. “It’s so
crazy being part of something that becomes part
of your life, something you do every year and all of
a sudden it’s done. I feel like we are ending in the
best way possible and even though it’s really sad I
feel like we are going out on a good note.” Despite
realizing that she will never get to play the role of
Darlene ever again, she shares just how incredible
it was to play her character. Every season she
changed and evolved. Going from very idealistic,
fearless and having no concept of consequences to
seeing a much more vulnerable side to her,
Darlene’s character had a powerful character arc.
As an actress, what better way than to explore a
character and your capability of adapting and
growing yourself?
In ABC’S hit show “Suburgatory,” Chaikin played
“Dalia” with whom she connected in some way
but unlike her role as Darlene. This role has had a
strong impact on her as she found herself
connecting to who she was playing more and more.
Just like Darlene, the talented actress is fearless,
goes for things most people think are too crazy to
go for, and pushes her own limits: “I feel like I
always go bull to the wall and go for my goal even
if it seems crazy to everybody else,” Chaikin shares.
In 2013, she wrote “No Where to Go,” which was
honored at the First Glance Film Festival. Inspired
by her ex-boyfriend, this personal project was a
short film in which she acted and produced and
had a lot of fun making. “It was just me and the
other actors and our director.” Having stepped foot
in both film and television, Chaikin has experience
different sides to being an actress from growing
with a certain character to shooting once and
having it done but then you get to play different
characters at a faster pace.
As she wears different hats: actress, producer and
writer, there is one more side to Chaikin which
makes her a whole: painting. From oil painting to
realism to dabbling in abstract, she had her first
big show in New York last year. The NY Times did
a piece on it and her show was up for a couple of
months where she was able to share her art and
also sell some! “Painting has always been my true
love,” she shares passionately. During Season 2 of
MR.ROBOT, she had been asked to do some
artwork which found itself being printed on
backpacks, shirts, and socks. This is something she
will never stop doing.
Just as she does playing golf, Chaikin takes her
time and experiences different levels of intensity
throughout her life and career. Doing both what
she loves and what she is good at: every role, every
project, and every art piece is a product of what she
has gone through and where she wishes to be. Pen
to paper, paintbrush to blank canvass, and acting
to camera, the incredible artist has big plans for her
future: “There’s a lot I want to accomplish with
directing too. I have a show that I wrote that I would
love to make. I love directing, producing and would
love to have my own production company one day.
I love the creative process.”
Carly Chaikin is a creative mind who can act, write,
paint, produce, and direct. Having been prepped
for this since her childhood without even knowing
it, it is safe to say she is headed for big things and
has already made an impact in her life and world
around her. Her role as Darlene may be coming
to an end in MR.ROBOT, but what she learned
from that experience will stay with her no matter
what. Pushing her boundaries and just going for it,
Chaikin has been painting her life day by day, project
by project.
What was one of your first introductions to
music that had a strong impact on you?
Michael Jackson and Kanye West. Their dancing
and singing; not being afraid to be themselves,
reminding you to share your energy with the
world. They were never afraid to be themselves,
to show their emotions.
Growing up, you spent most of your life as
a refugee moving from country to country.
How has your childhood experience played
a role in who you are today? In your music?
I feel like a lot of the people that hear my music
think ‘Wow, it’s such a mixture of everything.’
I think that it is due to the fact that I lived in so
many countries and I am a product of all those
different environments. I mean, I am super blessed
and I think it was so difficult for me to do
what I wanted to do back then because I had no
support; no one believed in me. That made me a
miserable person, but now I am successful doing
what I love, and that makes me happy. One
thing I have learned is that money isn’t going
to change anything. Who you are is who you
are. I think the best thing that I did in my life was
not quit. It’s so beautiful that I can make other
people happy. Seeing other people smile is what
makes me happy.
Was it a person or event who inspired you to
pursue a career as an artist?
I would have to say just watching the 90s, like
BET and watching all these artists. I was just so
in love with the crowd chanting and the sounds
they made. I realized that I wanted to share my
energy with the people.
What prompted you to create your latest
album?
I really wanted the world to hear all the sounds
I am able to make. My lows, my highs, my loves,
my heartbreaks, everything. I didn’t want to
leave anything out.
How does it feel to see your music being
used as anthems in all areas: sports, top
hits, and more?
The fact that I created something that people
are playing for sports and during the New Year,
I think I cracked a code. My whole mission on
earth is to leave something behind and be remembered
forever. The fact that “My Year” is
going to be played when I’m gone, that’s what
makes it special. Watching sports now, I feel like
I am super in the game. It’s an incredible feeling.
Tell us something about yourself that most
people do not know.
I have a lot of secrets. They think they know, but
they don’t know.
Do you believe that everything happens for
a reason in life?
Yes, I do. But I wish I could know the reason.
If you could have three wishes: what would
they be?
It would probably be just one. My only wish
would be to be in heaven. To be a pure soul, I
just wish to be a pure soul.
What is your “ultimate goal” ?
My goal in life is to be remembered as someone
that was special on earth, to be remembered
for my art, for being timeless. That’s my goal: to
create music that people will remember. I want
people to remember me for my music, my passion,
and as a trendsetter.
Say you could be anything in this world:
what would it be?
Happy.
What is something about yourself that most
people don't know.
I took a detour from acting after I graduated
performing arts college and did a business
How did your career in TV, film, and theater
start?
My career started because I loved taking pictures
when I was younger. My parents saw that passion
and thought getting me into the entertainment business
would get me money for college, fourteen years
later, here I am!
Getting casted as Simba is a big deal for a young
boy. Were you nervous about your role in The
Lion King musical and what did you learn along
the way?
I was petrified! However, the casting directors knew
how to make me feel comfortable. The experience
was great, I learned how important it was to give
your all no matter how you feel. The audience doesn’t
know that I had a bad day, they are there to enjoy a
show they paid money for. I’m obligated to give my
all.
What was it like to go on tour at such a young
age? What is the coolest place you visited while
on tour?
It was amazing. Visiting so many places and seeing
people of different races, socioeconomic backgrounds,
orientations and more, really shaped me.
My favorite places were Montreal, Quebec and
Ottawa, Ontario in Canada.
What is your favorite part about working on a
musical?
You currently play Randall along Sterling K.
Brown in the phenomenon "This Is Us." Tell us
how this role has impacted you.
The role has impacted my professional and personal
life. Working with such great actors has improved
my craft so much. My personal life has changed because
it’s given me the ability to take care of and give
back to my family after all their sacrifices.
How fun is it to work with multiple versions of
your character and see him grow up?
It is so cool and inspiring. It makes me want to not
only kill a scene for myself, but for Mr. Sterling and
Lonnie too because they’ve set the bar so high!
Do you ever feel like you and young Randall are
going through similar things although you live
in different decades?
I feel like that all the time. Randall and I are the same
age, so everything that Randall has gone through I’ve
been going through - learning to drive, prom, freshman
year of college (I was working on my college
essays when Teen Randall read his college essay to
the family). Funny story - I had stopped studying for
my learner’s permit and then the script came, and
Jack was teaching Teen Randall to drive! My mom
freaked out because I needed my permit to film this
part of the episode. We went to the DMV the next
day and I took the test in written form, so I had the
best advantage of passing. I stood nervously over
the DMV rep while she graded each page. I passed!
My favorite part had to be the feeling I got from singing
a song and seeing the audiences smile.
acting?
I realized I wanted to act at 4 years old when I would
audition for commercials and do print modeling
jobs.
Taylor
Hatala
Dances Her Way Into
Our Hearts
Our It-girl Taylor Hatala was born to dance. She shares with us how she
grew from the girl we saw on Youtube years ago to a seasoned performer.
Whether it was touring with Janet Jackson or teaching international dance
classes, this 16 year-old has a lot to say about her life since going viral. She
gets personal about her growth spurt, overcoming obstacles, and inspiring
others with dance. Taylor has danced her way around the world and she’s
given us an inside look at what she’s been up to since. See why Taylor has
won our hearts and the hearts of those around her.
Fun Fact:
The light effect was not added in post-production
but actually shot on set using a long-exposure on
When did you discover your passion for dancing?
What prompted you to pursue it as a career?
I started dance when I was three years old and got
into hip hop the age of six. I fell in love with hip-hop
and performing on stage. When I was 10 years old,
my mentor, Alexander Chung, suggested I go to Los
Angeles to train and start trying to make a career for
myself within the dance industry.
What is your favorite type of dance to perform?
I feel like Dance is really just movement and more expression
now than certain styles. However, if I had
to choose my favorite style to perform, it would be
hip-hop.
In a recent video, Netflix’s “Tall Girl” DanceOn
Class | “Stand Tall” | Dana Alexa Choreography,
you talk about your growth spurt. Was it difficult
to reach the point where you could embrace it
fully?
It was definitely difficult to embrace my height because
it did happen so fast for me. I was much shorter
than a lot of my friends and then all the sudden I was
the tall one. I’ve learned now that my height is beautiful
and that I should embrace it. It’s a part of me, and
I should be grateful that God made me this way.
How do you usually take on obstacles that come
your way?
Obstacles can end up being a blessing in the end and
can make you comfortable with something you weren’t
comfortable with before. I face obstacles every day
within my career because I like to take risks and I like
to challenge myself. I take obstacles on with a positive
mindset and with a lot of belief in myself that I will be
able to achieve what I want to and get through what
I’m going through.
You have been on Ellen 4 times! What was it like
to see yourself on TV (and hang out with Ellen)?
Being on the Ellen Show was the first big step within my
career, and it was a DREAM come true. I was only 11
years old at the time and it was so surreal to see myself
performing on National television, especially because
I had never done anything like that before! Ellen and
her employees were extremely nice and welcoming,
and I’m so grateful that I had the opportunity to perform
on her show 4 times. I was absolutely star-struck!
After appearing on Ellen, how did your life
change?
After I made my appearance on the Ellen Show, my
following began to grow over social media and I
started to get more opportunities! Just 5 months after
appearing on the “Ellen show” I booked the Janet
Jackson “Unbreakable World Tour”! My performances
on the “Ellen Show” provided a platform to get my
name out internationally and helped me achieve my
goal of becoming a professional dancer. I dance to
inspire, spread love, and spread positivity and Ellen
helped me do that.
You’ve toured with Janet Jackson twice. Tell us
about going on tour at such a young age.
Going on tour at such a young age was definitely a
mind blowing experience. Janet Jackson is one of the
most legendary female artist within the industry, and
it was so encouraging and empowering to work for
her. It really helped me mature in a sense that I was
working with all these extremely talented professionals
who were much older than I was. Tour definitely
has played a part in a role in who I am today, how I
work and how I handle myself.
How did touring with Janet Jackson improve your
dancing?
Well touring with Janet, I was introduced to definitely
a new style of dance that I wasn’t really used to. Janet
has her iconic dances that I had the amazing opportunity
to learn and perform, and they were different
then the dancing I was doing back home or even in LA
at the time. Learning those routine, helped me appreciate
what she does and her dancers that she’s had on
tour before I was on. They were tiring, but they were so
much fun to perform and learn. Performing on stage
every night, also helped with my performance and
learning how to exude different emotions throughout
different pieces.
On tour, you traveled across North
America, Japan, and Dubai.What was
your favorite place you’ve visited on
tour? Why?
I would have to say my favorite place that
I’ve visited on tour was Japan. We got to go
to Tokyo, which was where all of our shopping
happened because the fashion there
is incredible. We also got to go to Osaka,
where we visited all the castles/palaces and
it was gorgeous. Everyone was so nice and
so welcoming. I also love Japanese food!!!!
How would you describe your fashion
style?
I would describe my fashion style as random.
How I dress honestly depends on the mood
I’m in that day. For dancing, sometimes I
prefer to wear baggy clothing and have
more of a tomboy look. However, there’s
other days where I love dressing like a girl,
I love wearing heels, and I love dressing up.
Comparing me to my sister though, I’m definitely
more of the tomboy.
Where do you think your dancing will
take you next?
I absolutely love to teach and I am looking
forward to teach more internationally! I have
taught in a few international locations and
I loved meeting new people and exploring
new cultures in the dance industry. I’ve also
been working on acting, taking lessons and
working with an acting coach! I love being
able to act and model as well, because I am
able to be creative and I can express myself,
which is similar to dance. Overall, I am going
to keep dancing so I can spread inspiration
and my message to always be yourself and
to spread love!
During that time, you also produced
your own play. What is it about?
I produced my first play in Washington DC
right before I moved to LA. It was a fun
melodrama with lots of singing and I really
enjoyed the entire process! I am currently
studying to become a director. On my current
series, I trail our director throughout the
entire process of the episode. This begins
with scouting locations, all the way to the
director’s edit! I believe it’s important we get
more female directors of color, so that all
perspectives can tell the story.
Do you feel that your international side
plays a big part in who you are?
Being born abroad has definitely widened
my views, allowing me to dive into all kinds
of characters! I strongly believe that traveling
and spending extended periods of
time abroad helps to build internal depth
for characters you’ll play! I love constantly
changing my environment and meeting
new people.
If you could give your audience any piece
of advice, right now, what would it be?
We all have secret powers! But our strongest
power is our knowledge. I believe a constant
yearning for knowledge gives us a purpose!
When it comes to our skills and talents, that
power of knowledge is what’s needed to
excel and be the best at what we do! Never
stop learning! When you stop learning, you
stop living.
