river. Such a beautiful area with just
enough amenities to make this hunt
unforgettable.
After we’ve settled in at the lodge, we
headed to the shooting range to make
minor adjustments to our hunting gear
to make sure everything is ready for our
hunting adventure. My brother is a big
boy. He is carrying a big “stick”, a
.375 H&H Steyr Mannlicher Luxus -
what a machine! I decided to bring my
6.5x55 mm Steyr Mannlicher. My idea
was to test some ammunition on a
couple of bluewildebeest and Impala.
At first, Danie was not too eager
to hunt with my 6.5x55 mm, as he
believes the bigger the gun the quicker
it falls. On the other hand, I started to
doubt my own confidence to take on a
bluewildebeest with a relatively small
caliber. This is not ideal for big game,
but in the back of my mind I remember
my father’s words - “always make sure
about the “Shot Placement”.
Late afternoon Danie and I got
assigned to two different areas on the
hunting farm where we both would get
the chance to harvest a bluewildebeest
and an impala. The landscape was
amazing. Some areas were dense
vegetation and other parts more open. I
knew, with my luck, I will most probably
get something in the denser bush areas,
which will make the perfect shot almost
impossible. I realize I was limited with
the smaller caliber. Danie could easily
shoot through thicker bushes with that
monster he carriers. However, that didn’t
stop me.
