After about two hours of walking and
stalking on a couple of bluewildebeest,
I just couldn’t get a perfect spot on the
body to shoot. My luck suddenly turned.
I tried to be as quiet as a mouse. The
wildebeest saw something bigger than a
mouse and were getting uncomfortable.
I froze in my position and placed my
6.5X55mm on the shooting sticks and
picked the best one I could see. There
was one bluewildebeest looking straight
at me, more or less 130 meters away,
probably the best to take a shot at. Once
again I realize this is only a 6.5X55 mm
taking on a large animal. Maybe not
a great idea, but I pulled the trigger
anyway. I felt good about the shot and
was convinced that the animal would
not get far. When I reached the place
where the wildebeest was standing, I
could not see any blood. I started to
walk in the direction the animal took
off. A couple of meters later I found
some blood and gradually the blood
became more and more. Approximately
80 meters from the impact point, I
found my bluewildebeest, dead. I was
very happy and even more relieved. At
the same time, I was impressed with
this 6.5x55 mm.
After skinning the animal, I was
looking for the bonded bullet as
there was no exit wound. It struck
the bluewildebeest right in the chest,
traveling through the heart, through
the stomach and the back leg and
stopped right under the skin of the back
leg. I was really impressed with the
performance of both the 6,5x55 mm and
the ammunition. I used Swift A-Frame
140 gr. bullets and it travelled a total
distance of 98 cm inside the animal. This
was an incredible performance, with the
weight retention of 137gr – almost 98%
My brother returned from his
afternoon hunt with no luck but was
already excited about the next day.
Rooibokkraal is one of those hunting
destinations that leaves you speechless.
André and his Steyr Mannlicher 6.5x55mm with the
bluewildebeest into which the 140gr Swift A-Frame
penetrated an impressive 98cm.
André with the first
impala he shot with
the Steyr Mannlicher
6.5x55mm and
Swith A-Frame
combination.
