A trio of terrific reads for November
The long awaited sequel
to A Handmaid’s Tale
In A Handmaid’s Tale, Margaret
Atwood envisioned a world in which
the US had become Gilead, a totalitarian
world ruled by Commanders
in which women were totally subservient.
Told by one handmaid, Offred,
it describes how women are forbidden
to learn to read or write and are
solely there to serve men in all ways,
including sexually. The sequel, The
Testaments, is set 15 years later and
is told by three women – Aunt Lydia,
a trainer and manager of handmaids,
and two of Offred’s daughters,
Agnes, who became the privileged
child of an elite family, and Nicola,
who was smuggled out to Canada.
Resistance is growing in Gilead and
Lydia is plotting its downfall... At a
time when women are increasingly
protesting against femicide, rape,
unequal pay and often worse injustices
at the hands of men, this book
hits an extremely sensitive nerve.
Chatto & Windus, R360.
Secrets. Affairs. Revenge.
It’s all going on in the
suburbs ... where everyone
has something to hide
Shari Lapena’s Someone We Know
is set in a small suburb, where
everyone is polite and friendly and
neighbourly. When newcomers arrive
in town – a handsome man and
his extraordinarily attractive wife –
the main conversation appears to be
how much of a flirt she is with the
men in the area. Then she’s found
murdered, and more than one man
is ‘a person of interest’ to the police.
At the same time, a family’s teenage
son has been breaking into some
of the houses ... not to steal, but to
practise his fairly impressive computer
hacking skills. With secrets and
affairs and revenge, Lapena keeps
you guessing until the very end.
Penguin, R290.
Chosen as one of the best
thrillers of summer, this
legal thriller is exceptional
They were a perfectly ordinary family.
Interesting jobs. Yoga, basketball
and trips to the library. Takeout on
Fridays in front of the telly and a
bottle of wine with their friends.
Until the murder. Chosen as one
of the best thrillers of the summer
by the New York Times, A Nearly
Normal Family is M. T. Edvardsson’s
psychological, legal thriller that asks
what would you do if your daughter
was suspected of murder? How far
would you go to protect her? Would
you believe her, or the evidence
against her? The father believes
his daughter has been framed. The
mother believes she’s hiding something.
And the daughter believes
they have no idea what she’s truly
capable of. Could. Not. Put it down!
Brilliant. Macmallan, R299.
Make the most of the blue skies ...
Prohibition Blue Gin ...
coming to a cocktail
near you
It’s not just the blue we fancy in
the newly released Prohibition
Blue Gin. It’s also the way that
with certain mixers, it changes
to pink. Magic gin! So if you’re
in the mood for a pink drink, a
dash of tonic water or lemon
changes the PH balance and
the blue changes to a sparkling
pink. This Silver Creek Craft
Distillery gin gets its striking
blue colour from the flower
of the Blue Pea (so it’s 100 per
cent natural) and is infused with
juniper as well as coriander,
lemon, angelica, cinnamon and
a dash of rose water. Try it in
your fave cocktail … or spruce
it up with apples and thyme
(delish!). You can buy it for R369
online at Takealot.com and in
major bottle stores. Oh … a
little extra info … in traditional
medicine, the Blue Pea flower –
Clitoria Tetnatea – is said to have
aphrodisiac and antioxidant
powers, among other lifeenhancing
properties. Details:
Ice cream anyone?
If the answer’s ‘Yes, yes, yes!’ then grab
a copy of Jude’s Ice Cream & Desserts.
From simple, refreshing treats (orange
lollies) and sorbets like mango and
passion fruit or summer peach, to
fluffy buttermilk pancakes with
roasted apple, toasted oats and
ice cream, there’s a temptation
on every page – dig in and enjoy!
The many ice cream variations
(Earl Grey; beetroot and ginger
– yes, really!) include several for
vegans, but it’s the desserts we
fancy most. How about cinnamon
pavlova with winter fruit; Julia’s double
chocolate brownies or, by far our fave
... collapsed espresso chocolate cake
served with ice cream. Yes, yes, yes!
From shakes and smoothies to sauces
and DIY cones, when deliciousness
calls, this is the book you need.
BEING REAL
Pinehaven's Danielle Steynvaardt, owner of TA-DA! Theatre Arts and Drama Academy,
certainly knows how to make lemonade when life hands her lemons. This 29-year-old
beauty spills the beans on the entertainment industry, love and all things art.
Text: JACO-MARI HAASBROEK. Photographer: JACO BOTHMA. Hair: Tarryn Eksteen. Make-up: ANTOINETTE DE BEER. -
Iam a singer, musician,
and actress and I'm
currently studying to
become a pastor, but
my ultimate life goal is
to help others through
everything I do. I believe
that God has sent many
ups and downs my way so that I
could grow as a person and help
others by teaching them what I’ve
learned, equipping them to handle
everything life throws at them. I
have to put food on the table, so
I’m always busy with my business
or some new project, but I use all of
that to help people – that’s the best
part of my career.
I have always been in love with
singing and later discovered my
talent for acting. Coming from
a family where everybody has
corporate jobs, it was quite a shock
to the family when I said I wanted
to study drama. My father asked me
to draw up a business plan to show
him how I would earn a steady
income while pursuing this dream
of mine, and that’s how TA-DA! got
started in 2011.
Early in my career, I starred
in shows like Muvhango,
Binnelanders and Getroud met
Rugby, but fame has never been
a driving force for me. I want to
work in the entertainment industry
because it’s what I love, not to chase
fame, because there will always
be someone better or richer than
students so that one day they can be
even more accomplished than I am.
Sometimes I think that I bite off
more than I can chew, but God is
my inspiration and motivation. You
get a lot of rejection and criticism in
this industry, but I know that God has
a plan for me. The one thing I pray for
every day is to have less of me and
more of Him. Whatever happens in my
life, God will help me reach my goals.
We women tend to try and take care
of everyone and everything around us,
but we also need someone to care for
us, and that’s what God does for me.
One of the biggest struggles I
have faced in my personal life is
infertility, but God is helping me
through it. My husband and I have
been struggling to conceive for
eight years and I’ve been hard on
myself because it’s the one thing in
my life that I can't control. I still get
very emotional about it but I have
accepted that God has another big
plan for me. I had to realise that our
love and our marriage are enough. It
gets especially hard when people ask
us why we don’t have kids. Most of
the time they assume we don’t want
kids but we have to smile through the
tears because we are looking at the
bigger picture.
Fortunately, I have a big family and
my siblings’ children are like my
own. When my husband and I get
lonely, we invite the kids over for a day
of fun. Our whole family is very close
and we meet up for a big family meal
at least once a month. I’m also very
close to my mother and can’t go a day
without seeing her. When I’m down,
she lifts me up, and when I’m excited,
she is happy with me.
Through it all, my husband is my
rock and my biggest supporter.
Before we fell in love, he was one
of my brother’s friends, so I didn’t
pay him much attention. I used to
introduce myself all over every time
he came over! After I got out of a very
bad relationship, I saw what had been
right in front of my eyes the whole
time and found myself falling head
over heels in love with my brother’s
best friend.
We have come a long way and I’ve
learned so much from my husband –
most importantly, how to prioritise.
I’m a go-getter and when something
doesn't work out, I tend to get very
disappointed. Always being in control
is both my strength and my weakness.
By prioritising, I learned that not
everything is equally important and
that it's okay if something fails. In
my life, I put God first, my husband
second, and then everything else. Your
whole world doesn’t have to revolve
around your husband, but you weren’t
put on this earth to be alone.
We have gone through a rough
patch lately but giving up and
throwing it all away isn’t an option.
My husband and I had to take another
look at our relationship and realise
where both of us had gone wrong.
Now we have to pray and trust that
There will
always be
someone better
or richer
than you.
God will help us get our marriage back
on track. As long as we still have our
love for each other, everything will
work out as it should.
It’s a terrible feeling when
something goes wrong in your
marriage, but no one is perfect.
We live in a world where everyone’s
relationships look perfect on
Instagram and
Facebook, but
we all have
issues we don’t
post about on
social media.
In November,
my husband
and I will be
launching
‘Behind The
Scenes – The
Marriage’
where we will
be producing
YouTube videos and podcasts about
everything in relationships that people
don’t talk about, like fighting, infertility,
sex and even the lack thereof. I
believe that we can save the world,
one marriage at a time, because if
your relationships with God and your
husband are healthy, everything else
will fall into place.
I’m also busy with a Master's
degree at Team Impact Christian
University, specialising in sex in
marriage, because I feel that no
one talks about sex. Not everyone
knows what’s sinful and what’s right or
wrong, but sex is the glue that keeps
a husband and wife together. I want
to help people realise how beautiful
sex in a marriage can be. Next year, I
will be speaking about this topic at
women’s conferences around South
Africa, putting the sex back into
marriages – the way it should be.
When I’m not busy with my studies
or my business, painting and
making music are my favourite
hobbies. I never watch TV; I’m either
painting, planning, playing piano
and ukulele or spending quality time
with my husband when I have a bit of
time off. There is always music playing
in our house, because I can’t stand
silence.
In the future, I hope to launch my
own fabulous clothing line as well.
When I was at university, I started a
small but successful clothing line as a
way to earn my own money. Making
my own clothes has always been a
dream of mine since I love fashion and
putting outfits together. I know I can
do whatever I set my mind to, because
God is helping me.
Constantia Kloof’s image consultant,
Nqobile Nkosi, is an expert on all things
fashion. She shares her tips for choosing
between a one-piece and a two-piece
swimsuit for your style and body type.
ONE-PIECE SWIMSUIT:
• Avoid a halterneck swimsuit if you
have a big bust, thereby preventing
sideways creep, and if you have big
arms, as these will be accentuated.
• A sweetheart neckline on a swimsuit
is perfect for making your neck look
long and elegant.
• If you have a bit of a fleshy tummy,
your best pick will be a swimsuit
with lots of small prints as this will

camouflage the bulge.
• A tailored swimsuit that flares over
the bottom will work very well if you
have a very big behind as it hides
and balances it and gives a lovely
feminine silhouette.
TWO-PIECE SWIMSUIT:
• Don’t go for a boob-tube swimsuit if
you have a very small bust – it could
end up looking like a bandage on
you. A halterneck top is the perfect
style for those with a small bust as
you can show off your shoulders
with the angular cut of the design.
• Frills and ruffles on the swimsuit are
perfect for covering a flatter chest,
but these designs should be avoided
if you have a fuller bust.
• Pick a swimsuit with a deep V or
wide scoop neckline if you have a
very short neck. This will make your
neck look longer and more elegant.
HOME:
Want to zhoosh up your home this holiday? Go with blue – it is an allaround
crowd-pleaser, the VIP of the crayon box. A go-to hue, blue is easy
to decorate with and, more importantly, live in. From calming sky blue to
electrifying cobalt, there’s a blue hue that suits every style!
• Warm blues, like denim, ocean blue, or slate blue, contain hints of red.
Colour experts say they advance or come toward you, so they help
make a room feel cosier. Decorators often like warm blues in social
spaces, like the living room, the kitchen, or the dining room.
• Shades known as cool blues – like cobalt, turquoise, and ice blue
– have yellow in them and tend to recede, or back away, which can
help a small space look bigger. Colour experts explain that cool blues
encourage calmness (which is nice for a bedroom) and focus (say, in a
home office). Sometimes cool blues can go a little further and be cold.
But in a bathroom, where you want a crisp, clean vibe, that can be a
good thing.
Holiday tips for your pets:
Pet guru, Elize van der Merwe from
• Whether you are going on holiday or
are stressed from not having their
favourite human around.
• If people are using fireworks in your
that they won’t get as stressed about
the noise. If you
What your pet-sitter needs to know:
Christien van den Bergh, a pet-sitter
from Randfontein, says that the most
important part of hiring a pet-sitter
for your four-legged children is to get
everything in writing. Before you go on
your well-deserved holiday, make a list
of your instructions so that the pet-sitter
can refer back to it whenever needed.
It is important to mention the
following things:
• Your pets’ feeding schedule as well as
where the bowls are kept.
• Where your pets’ medication is stored
and how often and what dosage must
be given. Remember to list all injuries
or conditions so that the pet-sitter
doesn’t get worried unnecessarily.
• Grooming instructions including
how often it is needed, and where the
shampoo, brushes, and accessories are
kept. Sometimes pets can make
TRAVEL:
Purrfect travel tips
Travelling comes with its fair share of
stressors, especially when you’re
tasked with packing a bag and
bringing along your closest fourlegged
friend.
1. Get your pet geared up
for a long trip by taking him
on a series of short drives
first, gradually lengthening
the time spent in the car.
2. Make sure your pet has a
microchip for identification and
wears a collar with a tag imprinted
with your home address, as well as
a temporary travel tag with your
cellphone number, destination phone
number and any other relevant
contact information.
3. It’s safest for everyone if cats ride
in a carrier and dogs in a car harness
or a crate, depending on what makes
them most comfortable.
4. Make regular stops – every two
hours for a puppy, every three to four
hours for a cat or an adult dog – so
your pet can take a walk on a leash.
5. Feed your pet only lightly before
getting in the car – pets can become
carsick. Once you’ve stopped driving
for the day, feed normally. Opt for
bottled water – drinking water from
an area he’s not used to could result in
a tummy upset for your pet.
a mess, so make sure your pet-sitter
knows where the cleaning supplies
are too.
• Let the pet-sitter know what spaces
are off-limits for the pets.
• List emergency details for the
veterinarian and a family member or
close friend that can be contacted
in case of an emergency. Please list
your details in case of an emergency
as well.
• It is wise to show the pet-sitter
where the circuit breakers are and
what to do when the power is off.
• Make provision in case your return
gets delayed – ensure there is a
supply of extra food, medicine and
anything else your pets might need.
• You should preferably put the
payment agreement in writing
to eliminate confusion and
miscommunication.
Kids’
entertainment:
Keep kids entertained
by downloading their
favourite movies and games
on a tablet. Remember to
carry a good book or some
puzzles to save the day
in case of a tech
meltdown.
Road trip essentials
Budget Car Hire put together a list of
essentials to gather before your journey
to ensure you and your loved ones are
safe, you don’t have to worry and can
focus on enjoying your adventures on
the open road.
Roadside emergency kit: Keep pliers
and spanners on hand. Have jumper
cables in your vehicle to revive a
dead battery. Make sure you have an
emergency triangle/ road flares, a tow
rope and a flashlight.
First-aid kit: A good kit should
contain bandages, band-aids for minor
cuts and bruises as well as stronger
ones to dress serious wounds. Also, be
sure to include hydrogen peroxide, an
emergency blanket, disposable gloves
and antiseptic cream.
Hardcopy maps: Have a map on
hand. It will keep you on the right
path in case your cellphone battery
dies, and you don’t have a charger,
you can’t
get a network signal, or your GPS
loses the plot.
Cooler and snacks: Beat the heat
with a cooler filled with snacks, water
and energy drinks. When travelling, it’s
important to keep food cold, as germs
thrive in warmer conditions. Keep
hydrated, because water is crucial for
all bodily functions, so you are at your
optimum. Snack on energy bars or trail
mix to keep the hunger pangs at bay.
The right fashion: Pack for the road,
not the runway. The last thing you
want on a road trip is to fuss with
uncomfortable clothes and shoes.
women to do on a farm? I went off to study for a BSc in
Human Molecular Biology but later switched to a BSc in
Plant Health and Ecology after I did an internship with a
plant pathologist overseas. It opened my mind to new
possibilities for being a woman in agriculture. I later worked
on the farm during holidays. I learned the fundamentals
of the business from the ground up. I've been working
full time on the farm for five years, and proudly run the
production side of the business which entails planning,
research and development, and everything in between
that leads up to the final product.
WHAT DOES GREENWAY FARMS DO?
What started off as a small vegetable farm, which later
specialized in carrot production, has now seen new
opportunity to further expand the business. Instead of
throwing away the broken or forked carrots that aren't up
to sale standard, we made our famous Rugani juice. We
have now expanded to pineapple and beetroot juice, and
yummy combinations like carrot and pineapple as well as
carrot and ginger.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR AWARD?
One of my suppliers nominated me to be a candidate for
the AGRI Gauteng Young Farmer of the Year for 2019. The
judging criteria are quite broad and the judges want to see
how involved the farmer is in their business. They visited
the farm to see what we do here and how I influence the
business on all levels. When I was nominated, I was very
sceptical about the competition because I don't do this
job for the recognition, but I realised that it gives me the
platform to be noticed as a role-player in this industry. I
didn't expect to win, especially because I'm a woman. I am
the first woman to win this award and I think it really shifts
the paradigm about women in agriculture because it's not
an industry for men only any more. I'm proud that I can be
an example that women can achieve anything they put
their minds to. The national round of this competition is yet
to take place and I am looking forward to it.
WHAT CHALLENGES DO WOMEN IN THIS
INDUSTRY FACE?
There has always been a stereotype that there isn’t
anything a woman can do on a farm. Even though the
business was fast growing, and the doors were always
open for opportunity for us to join the family business,
there was no real clear understanding or direction, as to
where me as a women could add value to the business.
This however has changed. It’s a male-dominated
industry and it's very difficult to be seen as a role-player
in this industry if you're a woman. It’s a lot of hard work
to be successful. Luckily, these stereotypes are changing,
together with the paradigm shift that women can be
excellent farmers.
WHAT IS YOUR INVOLVEMENT WITH
THE COMMUNITY?
Besides providing local produce and employing locals, I
think that our success story also inspires and motivates
the community. The business started off on a 20 hectare
farm and now we have 3 500 hectares. We try to send out a
message that anything is possible if you're prepared to take
risks, work hard and walk roads that are not often walked.
We also empower our employees, giving them the chance
to get upskilled and to provide better lives for their families,
and at the end of the day, it lifts up the whole community.
BEING PART OF A FAMILY BUSINESS?
When we say that it's a family business we really mean it.
My father has five daughters and a son, so it was inevitable
that at least one of his daughters would end up in the
family business. One of my sisters and my brother have
also joined me on the farm. My loving husband is the
marketing and export manager of the business, so we get
to work together a lot. For me, family equals Greenway
Farms – I can't separate the one from the other because we
are Greenway Farms.
WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR YOU?
While the business is growing, my family is also growing.
My husband and I are expecting our first child and I'm very
excited about it because I am always working towards
leaving a legacy for the next generation.
Summer blooms
We’ve put together our top garden tasks and tips for the month.
Best for patios …
imagine having deliciously
fragrant and pickable sweet
basil at your fingertips. Basil
‘Dolce Fresca’ is a patio basil
that grows perfectly in a pot,
keeps its compact bushy shape
and doesn’t get leggy, like
garden varieties tend to do.
Plants grow 30 to 36cm high,
with a high leaf yield. This basil
has won several horticultural
awards, including the All-
American Selections vegetable
category for its sweet, tender
leaves and ornamental
shape. Use the leaves for
pesto, with pasta and in any
Mediterranean-inspired dish.
A great patio edible. Details:
www.ballstraathof.co.za.
Garden tasks:
• Sow quick-growing annuals like alyssum, dwarf
marigolds, nasturtiums, portulaca, and California poppy.
• Lift and divide irises, water agapanthus if the weather is
hot and dry and fertilise roses, cannas, dahlias
and hydrangeas.
• For heat-resistant bedding colour, plant vinca,
Angelonia and bedding salvia in sunny beds and
begonias in semi-shade.
• Water outdoor container plants and hanging baskets
once a day and feed twice a month. If the sun is
becoming too harsh, move containers into a position
where they receive afternoon shade.
• November is a peak time for pests. Watch out for
lily borer (black and yellow stripes) on your clivia and
amaryllis, and spray with Margaret Roberts Biological
Caterpillar Insecticide. Protect roses, tomatoes,
and sweet peppers with Ludwig’s Insect Spray,
which is organic.
• Succession sowing of most summer vegetables can
be continued until the end of this month.
We’re planting Salvia for its superb show
This shrubby upright perennial salvia produces endless spikes of large dark
purple, pink or orange-red blooms that attract bees and stand out against
the dark green leaves. Plants flower from spring to autumn and even through
winter in warmer areas. Growing 60 to 80cm high and wide, it is a good filler
for beds or as a feature in a large container. Plants are frost-hardy, performing
best in full sun in fertile well-drained soil. Like all salvia, they need moderate
watering and the soil can dry out between waterings. For strong growth, cut
back in spring, fertilise and water well. Details: www.ballstraathof.co.za.
Fly camping ...
a safari for the adventurous

Walking through big five country and sleeping out in the wild
So you’re looking for something a little out of the ordinary. A little more adventurous.
Something special. And as we so often do (boast, boast), we’ve done the hard work for
you and found something spectacular for you to experience. An authentic wilderness
adventure, where you can experience the beauty of the bush on foot and sleep out in
the wild. A fly camping safari experience is the latest activity offered at Samara Private
Game Reserve in the Great Karoo – arguably one of the most extraordinary areas of
South Africa.
Taking its name from the original safari days when explorers set up camp in big game
country with little more than a fly sheet protecting them from the elements, Samara’s
fly camping activity remains true to these origins.
WIth a maximum of six guests, your adventure begins with a guided bush walk
through Big Five territory ... fret not ... the rangers are armed and they, and the trackers,
are hugely experienced. Come dusk, you’ll arrive at your private camp, where your
tents have already been set up (thank heavens ... imagine having to do that yourself
after a long day walking in the bush!), and the fire ready to be lit. You’ll have (massively
welcome, we’re sure) sundowners followed by a traditional South Africa braai – think
boerewors, roosterbrood and grilled pineapple – cooked by the ranger and tracker
team. You’ll spend the evening sitting round the campfire, sharing safari stories and
listening to the nightly chorus of jackals, nightingales and the occasional lion roar,
before retreating to bed. The next morning, you can continue your walk or drive back
to the lodge.
This fly camping safari is only available from October to May (excluding December 15
to January 10) and is limited to guests who’ve booked a minimum three-night stay
in one of Samara’s lodges. A R7 000 a night camping surcharge applies, although this
charge is included in the cost if guests book a five-night conservation package. Prices
include the services of a fully armed ranger and tracker. You do need to be 16 or older.
