Roundabout planned
By Rick Palsgrove
Southeast Editor
A roundabout is being planned for a busy intersection south of
Groveport.
Groveport City Engineer Steve Farst said the Ohio
Department of Transportation and Franklin County have plans
to remove the traffic light and construct a roundabout at the
intersection of State Route 317 and Rohr Road.
“Construction is currently scheduled for the summer of 2022
and is expected to be completed in the same construction season,”
said Carla Marable, director of communications for the Franklin
County Engineer’s Office. “The project will be funded with $1.175
million of ODOT Safety Funds and the remainder of the cost will
come from the Franklin County Auto and Gas Tax Fund.”
Marable said that, based on a 2017 traffic count, the daily traffic
entering the intersection is approximately 15,000 vehicles per
day.
Columbus Crew
makes offer to Obetz
By Ris Twigg
Staff Writer
When it came time to discuss the Columbus Crew’s residency
and community involvement at Obetz’s soccer facilities, Obetz
Village Council members lacked hope they’d see another offer
from the Crew.
But that hopelessness was premature.
“For anyone who wants to save the Crew for Obetz…it’s your
last chance,” said Rod Davisson, economic development director
for the village of Obetz, during council’s Nov. 12 meeting.
On Nov. 13, Crew representatives walked into Davisson’s
office with a surprise – a new offer.
The Crew offered Obetz roughly $100,000 per year to rent the
facilities with an increase of an extra $25,000 in future years,
three public Crew trainings per year and a discounted soccer
camp for kids living in Obetz, among other incentives, with the
hopes of remaining in their current practice facility in Obetz for
an additional 3-year
term.
Running back Emmanuel Anthony looks for an opening during one of the Groveport Madison Cruiser
football team’s recent practices in Cruiser Stadium as they prepared for the Division 1 regional final
game against Pickerington Central on Nov. 22 at DeSales High School.
Cruisers’ playoff run ends
By Rick Palsgrove
Southeast Editor
The Groveport Madison Cruisers’ quest for a
state football title has come to an end.
Recaps of playoff games
•The Cruisers defeated Olentangy Liberty 13-7
on Nov. 15 in the Division 1 regional semi-finals.
Jalil Underdown scored on a 4-yard touchdown run
and Emmanuel Anthony scored the winning touchdown
on a 2-yard run for the Cruisers. The lone
blemish in the game was Olentangy Liberty’s 71-
yard touchdown pass in the third quarter.
With the win, the Cruisers avenged a 21-14 loss
to Olentangy Liberty on Sept. 27. The victory also
set a Cruiser football school record for 10 wins in a
season.
Groveport City Councilman Ed Dildine, who
played football for the Cruisers in the late 1980s,
said, “The team played a heckuva football game
against Olentangy Liberty. Groveport’s defense was
stout! To be one of the top teams in the state is a real
accomplishment.”
•The Ohio Capital Conference Capital Division
champion Cruisers then faced Pickerington Central
Tigers in the Division 1 regional final on Nov. 22 at
DeSales High School in first ever appearance in a
regional football final The Cruisers had defeated
Pickerington Central 19-14 on Sept. 20, but in the
regional final the Tigers downed the Cruisers 23-7.
The Tigers’ offense scored all 23 of their points in
the second quarter while their defense shut down
the Cruisers’ running attack in the first half by
packing the line of scrimmage with defenders. They
held the Cruisers without a first down in the first
half.
The Cruisers bounced back a bit in the second
half as their defense prevented the Tigers from any
further scoring and, in the third quarter, the offense
put together a 70-yard drive capped by a 14-yard
touchdown run by Underdown that showcased both
his speed and power. But that was the only score the
Cruisers could muster. Groveport Madison finished
the season 10-3 and Pickerington Central moved on
to the state semi-finals.
Thoughts on the season
“Our senior group has been through a lot over the
years,” said Cruiser Head Coach Bryan Schoonover.
“These guys stuck together, stayed the course, and
formed a strong bond. Our players and coaching
staff understand and appreciate Groveport
Madison’s football history. They’re an exciting, fun,
and great group to coach.”
ROUNDABOUT
Continued from page 1
Farst said state and county officials believe the roundabout will
“improve the traffic flow and performance of the intersection.”
Added Marable, “The installation of a roundabout will reduce
both the existing long traffic queues and congestion related crashes.”
Marable said preliminary engineering for the project is still
being completed.
“It is anticipated that the roundabout will be a single lane,”
said Marable.
Regarding potential detour routes once the project begins,
Continued from page 1
offer that expands on what the soccer team has already proposed
and to give both parties more time to make an informed decision.
“We don’t want to rush and make a decision based on timing
instead of merit,” Davisson said.
Because of the upcoming holidays and timing of Obetz’s council
meetings, the counter offer isn’t expected to be public until
January, according to Davisson.
The Crew is currently on a month-to-month lease now set to
end on Jan. 30. The Major League Soccer team currently pays
$2,500 per month ($30,000 per year) for a 5,000 square-foot building
and two world-class soccer fields, according to Davisson. But to
Davisson, it’s not about the money.
“We can make the rent $10,000,” he said. “It’s more about having
a team here that’s really never connected with the community.”
Guarded by an 8-foot privacy fence that prevents the community
from watching the team practice, the Columbus Crew has made
Obetz’s soccer facilities its home since 1997, just two years after
Major League Soccer incorporated as a limited
liability company.
“For us, the facility belongs to the village,”
Davisson said. “It’s been a long relationship
with three different owners. We all
know the road they’re on. We’re just trying
to bridge the gap between now and then.”
Growing the community
Obetz isn’t just relying on the Columbus
Crew to keep growing its community,
CRUISERS
Continued from page 1
One of this team’s many strengths was the play of
its offensive and defensive lines, which Schoonover
said can be attributed to both talent and dedicated
work by the players.
“We have some grinders who work hard all year in
the weight room and on the practice field so they will
be able to play and have success on game nights,” said
Schoonover.
The defense clamped down on and stymied opposing
offenses as the Cruisers shut out four opponents
this season and allowed three other opponents to only
one score.
The Cruisers’ high powered offense scored more
than 30 points in a game six times this season.
The offense had both a quick strike capability to
score from anywhere on the field at any time (as evidenced
by the two 90-plus yard touchdown runs this
season by running backs Emmanuel Anthony and Jalil
Underdown) and the power to grind down opponents
with long drives with the power running of Jashuan
McGraw.
Regarding the team’s success this season,
Schoonover said, “We focus on the day-to-day and the
players enjoy each other. They will always have the
experiences and memories of their successes and time
together.”
The 2019 Cruisers will be thought of as one of the
greatest, maybe even the greatest football team, in
www.columbusmessenger.com
Marable said, “It is yet to be determined if this project will be built
under a full closure with a detour or whether traffic will be maintained.”
In additional traffic news pertaining to another busy nearby
intersection, Farst said Franklin County plans to install a traffic
light at the intersection of Pontius and Rohr roads in the summer
of 2020.
For information on how to drive through a roundabout, visit
www.franklincountyengineer.org/how-to-drive-a-roundabout/
though.
Residents can expect to see several multi-million dollar projects
coming out of council this January and February. Obetz has been
buying up parcel after parcel of rural and commercial land in an
effort to create more public spaces and spur economic development.
On Nov. 12, council approved its park capital improvements
fund, a first-step in financing the newly-acquired land. The fund is
separate from Obetz’s general capital improvements fund,
Davisson said, and is for property-specific purchases and projects.
One of the first major projects is to convert an 18-acre parking
lot – currently an auto auction lot – into retail and restaurants,
things that Obetz residents can mostly only get in Groveport.
“Right now it looks like we have two (restaurants) coming,” said
Mayor D. Greg Scott, who added jokingly, “Hopefully we’ll get a
Tim Horton’s in there.”
Another project consists of 100 acres of farm land split in half
by I-270. The village already owns one of the 50-acre lots. All 100
acres will be converted into community parks, although the exact
type and number of parks is yet to be determined.
One thing is for certain, though: Davisson is hopeful about
Obetz’s future, with or without the Crew.
“We’re trying to create the best living experience of any municipality
in Ohio,” he said. “On average, we’ve added 1,000 jobs a
year. There’s about 20,000 people who work in this town and about
5,000 that live here. I was teasing for the most part when I said
not many people took vacations this year, but I mean it. Everybody
worked phenomenally hard.”
Groveport Madison history.
“Our seniors want to leave a lasting legacy,” said
Schoonover. “They’ve certainly done that.”

This drawing, made by the firm EMH&T in 2004, shows what was originally envisioned
for the layout of Groveport Park in the city’s master parks plan. City officials
want to update the master parks plan regarding what amenities and facilities
could be added to Groveport Park, located at 7370 Groveport Road.
Input sought on park upgrades
By Rick Palsgrove
Southeast Editor
City of Groveport officials are seeking
citizen input regarding future improvements
to the town’s largest park.
City officials are updating the master
plan for the city’s 82-acre Groveport Park,
located at 7370 Groveport Road. The
updated plan will provide a framework
for the future development of facilities,
athletic fields, and other park amenities
over the next several years for Groveport
Park.
“The study is primarily pertaining to
Groveport Park, since it is the largest and
most active park,” said Groveport City
Administrator Marsha Hall. “However,
the committee will review the other parks
at the end of the study to determine if
they want to modify any future enhancements
to those parks.”
City officials are asking residents to
respond to a short survey to help them
identify issues and concerns as well as
types of future improvements residents
would like to see in Groveport Park.
The survey can be found at: www.surveymonkey.com/r/groveportpark.
The deadline for responses is Dec. 2.
“The updated plan should be made
available to the public after Groveport
City Council reviews it, hopefully sometime
in late January,” said Hall.
The original plans from 2004 for
Groveport Park included several amenities
that, to this point, have not been
added to the park, including: restrooms,
skatepark, outdoor basketball courts,
sand volleyball court, shelters, and horse
shoe pits.
In the past couple of years, council has
also discussed adding tennis courts and
pickleball courts to the park.
Currently, Groveport Park features
the Groveport Recreation and Senior
Center, Groveport Aquatic Center, softball
diamonds, soccer fields, EVOS playground,
paved leisure path (approximately
1.8 mile), two ponds with fountains, the
historic Ohio and Erie Canal Lock 22,
large expanses of green space, and wooded
areas. Fishing is permitted at the two
ponds.
Groveport Park connects with
Blacklick Park and Rager Road via an
unpaved foot/bike path at the northwest
end of the property.
Groveport has eight developed parks
plus 11 undeveloped neighborhood parks.
The eight developed parks are: Groveport
Park, Cruiser Park, Heritage Park,
Blacklick Park (the town’s oldest park),
Degenhart Park, Orchard Park,
Greenpointe Business Park, and
Veterans Park.
Founders Bend resident James
Chilton asked council, at its Nov. 18
meeting, to consider adding a shelterhouse
and swings to the Founders Bend
neighborhood park.
Hall said discussions, considerations,
and information gathering about potential
improvements to the city’s other
parks would be done internally since the
current emphasis on updating the master
parks plan is on Groveport Park.
On a recent Saturday morning I sat in my car, driving my dog,
Frankie to see the vet. It would be his last trip to the vet. It would
be his last car ride.
As I drove to say my final
Cordle’s Corner
Andrea
Cordle
goodbye to my beloved dog, I
thought back to more than 13
years ago when he was first
in the backseat of my car. We were just starting
our journey together.
I remember I looked in the backseat.
Frankie and his brother, Meeko were curled
up together, just staring at me with a confused
look on their faces. They didn’t know
me. They didn’t know they were going to
their new home. I felt overwhelmed and
uncertain of my snap decision to bring home
two dachshund puppies.
It didn’t take long to fall in love with
Frankie and Meeko, but Frankie was always challenging. It took
a long time to potty train him. And obedience training him, forget
that. Frankie rarely listened to me. I took him to puppy training
class. He learned to sit — that was it.
He somehow passed the class with the recommendation to
repeat the course.
Frankie and I didn’t have the strongest bond at first. It was difficult
to get a read on him. He just did his own thing. I would take
him out for walks at the park or around the neighborhood and he
turned into a wild, feral animal. It was like I was not present. Only
his nose mattered, and I was the annoyance holding him back on
the leash. But once we were in the house, he would cuddle up to
me and become a sweet dog.
Frankie got into so much trouble. When I opened the refrigerator
door, he would come over, stick his head in and pull something
out and run away with it.
Once he pulled out an entire holiday ham! He would get into
the bathroom trash can, pull out all the tissues
and tear it up.
The trouble didn’t stop at home. It
extended to the parks as well. My sister and
An enduring bond
I took Frankie and Meeko to Three Creeks
Metro Park once and they decided to roll in
a large quantity of goose poop. The smell
was horrid. I was gagging and almost threw
up driving them back home — it was a good
20-minute drive mind you. When we went to
Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park, Frankie
stuck his head under a bathroom stall door.
There was a woman in there who screamed.
I was so embarrassed.
Another time at the same park, Frankie
and Meeko encountered bison. They were
right by the fence.
Of course, the dachshunds had to prove
they were the dominant animal and barked
at the large bison.
For all the trouble Frankie caused, he
was also a sympathetic dog and seemed to
know when he was really needed. In 2015,
my dad died of leukemia.
After his memorial service when everyone
had left the house and I was alone, I sat
down on the stairs and just cried. Frankie
came to me and sat on the landing. I just
hugged him and cried for a while. He sat
there the whole time and let me. Like he
knew I needed comfort.
Then in 2017, Frankie’s brother Meeko
died. We got home from the emergency animal
hospital in the early morning hours. I
Frankie, Jan. 20, 2006 - Nov. 16, 2019
www.columbusmessenger.com
went right to bed and just laid there crying. Again, Frankie came
up to me and just laid his head on my shoulder. I held him all
morning. I think we both needed the comfort.
Shortly before Meeko passed away, Frankie lost his vision to
SARDS, Sudden Acquired Retinal Degeneration Syndrome. It was
just heartbreaking. Image being able to see one day and the next
day, it’s dark.
He was so confused and depressed. Many dogs adapt quite well
to vision loss, but Frankie never really did. He became a shell of
his former self. He used to be a highly confident and independent
dog. SARDS took that from him. I tried everything I could think of
to help him.
I did research. I joined a Facebook group for blind dog owners
to get tips and see what success other people had. We put up gates
by the stairs and blocked off hard edges so he would be safe. I even
put barriers around my bed so he wouldn’t fall off.
Taking care of Frankie became a full-time job for my sister and
I. He got anxious when he thought he was alone so we tried to
arrange our schedules so he would rarely be alone. I even adopted
another dog to keep him company.
Eventually, Frankie became more accustomed to being blind,
but he was a different dog. I still loved him just the same. Maybe
even more. I seemed to develop an even deeper bond with Frankie
in caring for him.
Last year, Frankie started having heart and kidney issues. He
was on several different medications for his heart, which I was
told would affect his kidneys. I knew that would eventually be a
problem. He started showing signs of kidney failure. He stopped
eating, kept getting sick and had no strength. I knew it was time.
I think Frankie knew it was time too. Almost every night in the
week leading up to his death, Frankie slept with his head on my
shoulder. It was as if he knew his time with me was ending and he
knew I would need all the comfort I could get. That Saturday
morning, I laid in bed with him as long as I could knowing it would
be the last morning we had snuggle time.
Frankie was a true joy. He was so brave when blindness struck
and when he was sick. I am a better person for having Frankie in
my life.
Because of him, I am a more patient, caring and compassionate
person. I think of his strength in dealing with adversity and try to
draw inspiration from him in going through my grief.
One thing comforts me. Frankie and Meeko are together now.
They are both healthy and happy.
And I am so lucky to have been their mom.
with each organization receiving $1,603. and Cruiser.” The films were originally
made about 15 years ago.
A golf course by any other name still
plays as sweet.
The city of Groveport plans to rename
the city owned Links at Groveport golf
course to The Groveport Municipal Golf
Course.
To do so, Groveport City Council appropriated
$40,000 in the city’s 2020 budget to
pay for the rebranding of the course and
new signage.
“The budgeted funds will go to replacing
signs throughout the property, but specifically
the Groveport Road and Richardson
Road signage, the two signs at the
entrance from Richardson Road, signage
around the clubhouse and signage coming
down the lane entering the property,” said
Groveport Director of Golf Tom Walker.
The golf course, located at 1005
Richardson Road, was formerly a private
country club that the city purchased several
years ago and then named it The Links
at Groveport. It is an 18-hole, par-72
course operated by the city. The front nine
was built in 1929, designed by Frank
Waugh. The back nine was built in 1971,
designed by Hurdzan/Kidwell.
Earlier this year, city officials began a
series of rebranding efforts to help market
the city and the various amenities it offers.
“Many players identify the
course as Groveport, not Links at
Groveport.”
- Tom Walker
Groveport director of golf
“During the rebranding there was some
discussion about changing the (golf course)
logo,” said Walker. “It was determined that
the logo should remain, but that changing
the name to reflect what the course is
would be a better fit. A links course by definition
is a course that’s located by a sea or
ocean, such as St. Andrews or in the
United States, Kiawah Island. Groveport’s
golf course is considered a Parkland course
therefore the current name is out of place.”
Walker said the choice of the new name,
The Groveport Municipal Golf Course, simplifies
the identification of the course.
“Many players identify the course as
Groveport, not Links at Groveport,” said
Walker. “Also, to eliminate some confusion
that still exists as to whether the course is
public or private, identifying it as a municipal
facility aids in clearing up that confusion.”
Council will vote on the proposed name
change at one of its upcoming meetings.
Firefighters help families
By Linda Dillman
Staff Writer
Madison Township firefighters not only
put out blazes, at this time of year they
also create the warmth of kindness by
reaching out to a trio of needy families.
“Each shift gets a family,” said Madison
Township Firefighter Ed Dildine, Jr., a
member of Union Local 2507, which sponsors
the program. “There is one (family)
from Groveport, one from Canal
Winchester and one from the unincorporated
area of Madison Township. We have
been doing this for about seven years. I
first started it on my shift with one family
and then our firefighter local union became
involved the next year.”
Families are identified by the Center for
Groveport Human Needs and Canal
Winchester Human Needs. Their information
is then forwarded to the fire department.
Donations are collected from firefighters
and the firefighters’ union.
“Then we go shopping for toys, clothes
and food,” said Dildine. “We wrap all the
toys and clothes and make arrangements
with the family to deliver to them using the
firefighters and a fire engine. Our entire
department participates in this program
with monetary donations, time for shopping,
wrapping and delivery.”
While the number of families firefighters
adopt for the holidays remains the
same, Dildine said, from conversations
with both Human Needs agencies, the
number of families who need help keeps
growing.
“This, in turn, puts a strain on each
organization trying to make their donations
go farther,” Dildine said. “Human
Needs provides a very vital service to the
community and anything we can do to
make it a little easier for them and make
three families have a very Merry
Christmas is the least we can do to give
back to the communities we serve.”
Dildine hopes word spreads to other
organizations and individuals to step up
and help out Human Needs in the
Groveport, Canal Winchester and unincorporated
Madison Township areas.
Firefighters union President Rashid
Taylor said the members of the Madison
Township Fire Department are committed
to provide the best service they can for
township residents.
“In the many years that we have been
involved with Adopt-a-Family, it has given
our members another opportunity to be
involved with some of those in need in the
community,” said Taylor. “It is always
heartwarming for our firefighters to participate
in the program and have a small
impact. We appreciate the collaboration
and support from Groveport and Canal
Winchester Human Needs.”
