[SPECIAL] The cornerstone building wasn’t built with residential units in mind, but Polatty said future buildings will need housing – most likely condominiums or upscale loft apartments – to create a true downtown vibe. “That’s part of what makes a downtown feel alive,” he said. “That’s what gives it a sense of energy.” Johnson agrees, saying he believes the county’s leadership is open to small-scale residential development to complete the live-work-play concept. “We want to make sure we have the right fit there,” he said. “The commissioners aren’t interested in just allowing a freestanding apartment complex there, but they’d love to see some second-floor residential above retail or maybe a large retail component that’s in front of a restaurant component. All of those things are on the table.” As for The Plaza getting off to a slow start, Polatty said it wouldn’t be a first for Meybohm.
