Denia launches fake news<br />
service for abuse victims<br />

THE unit of the Denia Local<br />
Police that helps victims<br />
of gender violence<br />
has successfully piloted<br />
an unusual scheme that<br />
involves fake magazines.<br />
These appear to be genuine<br />
productions specialis-<br />
ing in such things as health<br />
and beauty, aimed at female<br />
readers. However, secreted<br />
in them is information about<br />
gender violence, help lines<br />
and other such information.<br />
These are free and have<br />
been distributed in 18 Denia<br />
retailers and the police say<br />
they have received 24 calls<br />
as a direct result of women<br />
reading the magazines. The<br />
idea is that the abuser would<br />
not know that his victim<br />
had access to this information<br />
while many take actions<br />
such as not allowing their<br />
partner’s internet access.<br />
