A 22-YEAR-OLD scam artist 

from Orihuela, with over 70 

arrests under his belt, has 

been detained again – this 

time on eight counts including 

claiming to be a spy and 

a police officer, as well as 

trying to flog fake concerts. 

The man, named only as 

Jonathan M, was arrested in 

Redovan by Elche police officers 

on eight counts. 

The list of cons is extensive 

by Alex Trelinski 

with the man having one of his 

previous arrests in April, after 

admitting that they he had 

stayed at an Archena spa with 

his girlfriend without paying 

and he pretended to other 

guests that he was a chief inspector 

based in Cartagena. 

He even wore a genuine 

uniform that he had bought 

via the internet, which he did 

not pay for and had been sold 

by the officer’s son, after his 

father had died. 

The trickster even had a 

badge that identified him as 

a secret service agent working 

for Spanish intelligence. 

His main fraud over a number 

of months was selling 

fake pop concert tickets via 

social media, with arrest warrants 

issued across Spain, as 

victims wired him payments 

and received counterfeits 

in return. 

They only realised that 

they had been conned when 

they refused access to a concert 

venue. 

The conman, who worked 

in Elche, was arrested at his 

girlfriend’s home in Redovan, 

with fake documents and 

bank cards discovered in a car 

that he had hired from a Murcia 

rental company.

Optical chain joins the 

campaign for those in need 

SPECSAVERS Ópticas has recently 

launched a campaign 

to collect non-perishable food 

for those in need across all six 

stores on the Costa Blanca. 

It has joined the Operación Kilo 

Campaign, which is organized by 

Spain’s Federation of Food Banks 

(FESBAL) and operates nationwide 

through a network of 55 

food banks. FESBAL distributes 

food via charities and associations 

to help the most vulnerable 

people in society and is currently 

supplying food to 1.5 million people. 

Specsavers Ópticas will be 

collecting food for them until the 

end of the year. 


The Specsavers Ópticas stores 

on the Costa Blanca are collaborating 

with the food bank for 

the Alicante province (Banco de 

Alimentos Alicante) to ensure the 

food donations get to those people 

who really need them. They 

are particularly in need of the 

following non-perishable foods 

and toiletries – oil, tinned foods, 

baby food, nappies, formula milk, 

toothpaste, deodorant, bath gel, 

shampoo and soap. These products 

can be dropped into Specsavers 

Ópticas in Javea, Calpe, Benidorm, 

Torrevieja, Guardamar 

and La Zenia until the end of the

RIDDLE OF MISSING BRIT 


THE GUARDIA CIVIL have 

found no trace of a missing 

British man who was 

last seen on Saturday November 

23rd kayaking out 

of Torrevieja marina. 

Kenny McPherson’s family 

fear that he may have been 

carried out to sea by strong 

currents and launched social 

media appeals for information 

on the 62-year-old Aberdeen 

man. 

The Scots-born offshore 

survey engineer flew to the 

southern Costa Blanca last 

month to spend a few weeks 

at his holiday property in the 

Torrevieja area. 

His step-daughter, 

23-year-old Anna Mitchell 

said:- “My mum said he 

had kayaked when they had 

been abroad with a tutor but 

on this particular occasion 

he had decided he wanted to 

do a bit by himself.” 

“He had just bought a 

kayak and had been out on 

the Friday before he went 

missing just down the road 

from where he was last seen. 

We were unaware he was 

going to go out on the Saturday 

again.” 

Mr McPherson’s neighbours 

saw him leave with the 

distinctive lime green kayak 

early on Saturday November 

23rd, and his car was was 

left at Torrevieja Marina. 

“The weather conditions 

early in the morning were 

good but we were told it got 

bad later in the day and the 

wind speed picked up around 

midday and the sea turned 

quite choppy,” Anna added. 

TIGERS SPANISH TREK 

FIVE TIGERS have arrived 

at their new home in Alicante 

Province, after they 

were intercepted in a bad 

state in a lorry by Polish 

border guards. 

The animals were en 

route to to a Russian zoo 

after an arduous journey 

from Italy. 

They are now based at 

the Primadomus Wildlife 

Refuge in Villena, which 

specialises in helping exotic 


non-domesticated animals. 

Two Polish zoos gave 

nine tigers temporary accommodation, 

with experts 

describing the animals as 

“emaciated, dehydrated, 

with sunken eyes, excrement 

stuck to their fur, 

urine burns, in a total state 

of stress, and without the 

will or desire to live” when 

they were first discovered.

Politician dies in hotel fire

The local authorities have 

opened a separate enquiry 

to that of the police as the 

abuse took place on municipal 

property. 

THE sole victim in a fire at 

an Ibiza hostel has been 

named as Pedro Tesoro, 

a 53-year-old Spanish national 

and prominent member 

of the local Vox political 

party. 

The fire broke out at the 

Hostal Balearic last Thursday 

which is located in the 

popular tourist town of San 

Antonio. Mr Tesoro, the proprietor 

of the establishment, 

was lying on the floor when 

the emergency services arrived. 

He was declared dead 

at the scene and it is believed 

that he may have suffered a 

cardiac arrest not directly related 

to the fire. 

The victim was a member 

of the steering committee for 

the Ibiza and Formentera 

THE court inquiry into the death of 

a customer after eating in a prestigious 

Valencia restaurant has 

found that this was most likely due 

to natural causes and not food poisoning 

as first suspected. 

The 46-year-old had a meal with her 

husband and child in Michelin starred 

“Riff” back in February. She became

THE people of Spain have 

been doing a lot of voting 

lately, but Denia residents 

now have the chance to 

vote for something that may 

have a more direct impact 

on their day to day lives. 

The proposals for the 2020 

participatory budget are now 

online and the voting process 

was due to start on 2 December 

and ends on 16 December. 

Commonly referred to as 

the People’s Budget, it features 

dozens of ideas from local 

citizens about things the 

town hall should be spending 

taxpayer’s money on. 

The website is www.participadenia.es 

and if you go there 

you will see the site split into 

thirteen different barrios in 

the town. So, if, for example, 

you click on the barrio Roques 

icon you will see proposals 

such as cleaning the hillsides, 

A court in Valencia City has 

found an Algerian national 

guilty of assaulting two 

women in what they have 

termed a hate crime. 

The incident happened in 

2018 in the Patraix area of 

Valencia when the defendant 

saw the two young women 

kissing in a doorway. 

He firstly asked if he could 

join in and when they told 

him to stop bothering them, 

he spat at them and called 

them disgusting. 

He then physically attacked 

the women, punching 

them both several times. 

When the police became 

involved at the scene, he 

said that they should ask the 

women to stop and it was his 

duty “as an elder” to act on 

incidents such as this. The 

court fou nd him guilty of hate 

crimes and assault, ordering 

him to pay compensation to 

the two victims. 

The accused man’s lawyer 

said that he had voluntarily 

moved away from the area 

where the victims live so that 

their paths do not cross again. 

A 62-year-old woman who 

entered the Valencia City 

town hall carrying a revolver 

sparked an emergency terrorism 

protocol last week. 

Local Police effectively 

locked down the building and 

prevented people entering the 

building while the situation 

was sorted. 

After a discussion with the 

woman the authorities accepted 

her explanation that 

she was in the building to process 

documentation relating 

to the weapon and was under 

the false impression that she 

needed to bring the revolver 

along to her appointment. No 

charges have been made.

Work on Europe’s 

longest prom set to start 


THE bidding process for 

the contract to build the 

first stretch of what is 

planned to be the longest 

coastal walk in Europe has 

now been completed. 

Due to issues with the tender 

process there was only 

one valid bid, by local firm 

Categor for €545,000, just 

below the limit of €550,000. 

The ambitious project 

eventually proposes to build 

an unbroken 21 kilometre 

pedestrian stretch between 

the municipalities of Elche 

and El Campello. The first 

phase is for one kilometre of 

the project and the successful 

applicant has a timescale 

of four months to complete 

the work. 

The remainder of the 

promenade is likely to be 

broken down into twenty different 

tenders as it crosses 

different municipalities 

along the coastline. 

A massive fire in a recycling 

warehouse on the 

Atalayas industrial estate 

in Alicante resulted 

in two people being hospitalised. 

The blaze started at 

about 9pm on Thursday 

evening and fire crews 

fought through the night to 

extinguish it. Five Alicante 

City crews attended the 

scene while Local Police 

and an ambulance team 

were also on site. 

The materials in the 

warehouse were highly 

flammable, including 

tightly packed cardboard 

and paper, while the strong 

winds further complicated 

the operation. The two 

people who were hurt were 

suffering from smoke inhalation 

and are not believed 

to be seriously ill .

OVER €5,000 worth of 

damage to an unnamed 

Valencian school has 

been blamed on a group 

of students aged between 

14 and 15 years old. 

Eggs, stones and other 

objects were thrown at 

the walls and doors of the 

building, breaking windows 

and also the motor of 

a mechanised door. 

Paint was splattered on 

the walls as well as the 

eggs, adding clean-up costs 

to the structural damage. 

The police say that they 

opened an investigation 

and have linked the actions 

to seven pupils who attend 

the school. They have been 

provisionally interviewed 

before the next action 

is taken.

Programme 

THE U3A Vall del Pop Singers have been 

busy rehearsing their collection of songs 

and carols for Xmas and they started their 

programme by opening the entertainment 

at the Jalon Valley Help Xmas Fayre on 17th 

November. 

The Group are keen to support JVH and at 

this time of year they regularly entertain people 

who are old or in hospital and perform carols 

outdoor in the village squares, often with the 

support of the children from the local school, 

and always with the enthusiastic support of 

the people who singing along with the popular 

songs.

Joining the mathematical elite 


JAIME Gomez, a leading professor and lecturer 

at the Valencia Polytechnic University 

(UPV), has been awarded what is largely regarded 

as the highest distinction in the field 

of mathematics. 

The William Christian Krumbein medal is 

considered the “Nobel Prize” of mathematics and 

is only awarded once every two years, meaning 

there have only even been 32 people who have 

been given the honour since its inauguration 

in 1976. The award is made by the International 

Association for Mathematical Geosciences 

(IMAG) and is for Mr Gomez’ work in the fields of 

informatics, earth sciences and in particular hydrogeology 

where he has done valuable work on 

the sustainability of aquifers in the Mediterranean 

environment in the light of climate change. 

The award ceremony will be in Delhi (India) 

in March.

MOFTAG BIDS A SAD 

FAREWELL TO 

YVONNE WOODHAM 

IT is with heavy hearts 

that the moftag club of 

calpe pays tribute to our 

dear member yvonne who 

sadly passed away on 20th 

november aged 72 years. 

Yvonne moved to calpe in 

2010 and joined moftag a 

year later. she was an active 

member and gave tirelessly 

to all our fund raising 

events. she had a huge 

heart for giving. tragically 

it was her heart that let her 

down in the last few weeks 

of her life. 

She was incredibly talented 

and knitted the most 

beautiful toys which she raffled 

to raise extra money for 

our charitable causes. 

Yvonne loved to socialise 

and was even known to entertain 

us with a song on the 

odd occasion! she worked 

hard on our committee helping 

to plan and organise 

events for our members to 

enjoy too. 

In addition to all of this 

she was a dedicated wife to 

her husband bob for almost 

52 years and a proud mother 

to 1 daughter and 2 sons. 

she idiolised her 7 grandchildren 

and leaves a huge void 

in all of their lives. 

Sadly missed but never to 

be forgotten - we are grateful 

that you could share a 

part of your life with all of us 

at moftag. 

Monday Ramblers 

PAUL and Jan Leniston 

are reporting that this 

group has made a very 

promising start, despite 

the less than perfect 

weather. 

Although the numbers 

on each walk are limited 

to about 16, so that everyone 

knows everyone else for 

most walks there are still a 

few vacancies. 

For the first walk on 7 

October 16 set off to walk 

in the valley from Jalon to 

Parcent, with a banana stop 

at Alcalali and our picnic 

lunch at font in Parcent.

14 October when 13 started 

from Benimeli for a steady 

climb up to the Aerials 

overlooking the village and 

ending at Bar Tormos for a 

welcome drink.

28 October when 11 walked 

from Parcent to Benichembla, 

via Murla, which included 

crossing a river 

three times - fortunately it 

was not too deep after the 

recent rain.

LAST weekend’s Jalon Valley ARC 

Christmas Fayre was a great success 

for both fundraising and also 

judged on the enjoyment of all 

those who attended. 

There were over 40 stalls selling 

everything from toys to accessories as 

well as the ever popular home baked 

food. Santa paid a visit to the children 

and music was provided by Matt Mason 

and The Jukes with a mixture of 

festive and standard songs. 

With the stalls, entry fee, raffle, donations 

and other fundraising efforts 

more than €2,500 was raised which 

will go a long way to helping animals 

in the area, not just at Christmas but 

all year round. 

A big thank you from the ARC team 

goes to all the people who came along, 

all those who helped and of course 

the volunteers who gave of their 

own time.

Equality in the library 


THE Equality Department in l’Alfas del 

Pi have donated over a hundred books 

to the town’s junior schools to kickstart 

the “Violet Corner” initiative. 

These are spaces where equality, tolerance 

and diversity are all respected and 

encouraged. 

The three infant and primary schools 

will each receive 40 books, specially chosen 

for their content by the teachers from 

each centre. 

Councillor Rocio Guijarro said “these 

are books that deal with concepts such 

as tolerance, equality, solidarity or empathy 

and that highlight the contribution 

of women throughout history, while also 

encouraging attitudes respectful of differences”.

Immigrants rescued from cliff 


SEVEN immigrants who came ashore in an 

inflatable craft were rescued from a cliff 

off Playa Albir on Saturday. Two other immigrants 

from the same craft had been intercepted 

by the Guardia Civil a day before. 

All those rescued are male and Algerian nationals. 

They were treated but confirmed to all 

be in good health despite their ordeal, partly 

helped by the unseasonably warm weather at 

the weekend.

Denia launches fake news 

service for abuse victims 


THE unit of the Denia Local 

Police that helps victims 

of gender violence 

has successfully piloted 

an unusual scheme that 

involves fake magazines. 

These appear to be genuine 

productions specialis- 

ing in such things as health 

and beauty, aimed at female 

readers. However, secreted 

in them is information about 

gender violence, help lines 

and other such information. 

These are free and have 

been distributed in 18 Denia 

retailers and the police say 

they have received 24 calls 

as a direct result of women 

reading the magazines. The 

idea is that the abuser would 

not know that his victim 

had access to this information 

while many take actions 

such as not allowing their 

partner’s internet access.

Santa’s little helpers 

Dancing up a 

festive treat 

MARCIA’S Dance Centre 

and Stage School pupils 

based in Calpe held their 

performance of “Santa’s 

List – A Christmas Twist” 

last week, raising money 

for local causes in the 

process. A full house enjoyed 

a diverse evening of 

dance, singing and theatre 

as well as some impressive 

costumes. 


The venue was the 

Casa de la Cultura and all 

agreed that the new projector 

helped to make it their 

most exciting production to 

date. Over €2,000 was raised 

for the Calpe and Benissa 

Lions Club which will distribute 

the money to local 

good causes. 

A glass recycling campaign 

during Calpe’s 

Moors and Christians fiesta 

this year saw 27,400 

bottles and other glass 

containers collected, totalling 

7,200 kilogrammes. 

“La Reconquista del vidrio” 

(reconquest of glass) 

campaign was organised 

by Ecovidrio, the non-profit 

organisation that is responsible 

for most glass recycling 

in the region.

The Contrabandistas fila 

won the prize for recycling 

the most materials with the 

various associations being 

responsible for the majority 

of glass generated during 

their local parties. 

The winning fila was 

recognised in an awards 

ceremony this week at the 

Town Hall. 

A Calpe school suspended all lessons after 

a teacher died at the centre last Friday. 

The unnamed man was in his early 

fifties and from nearby Vinaros. 

He collapsed in a corridor at around 

8am just as the school was opening for 

the day. Colleagues tried to help him and 

also to shield students from the distressing 

scene as they were gathered together 

in the playground. 

An ambulance crew arrived shortly after 

the incident but were unable to revive the 

victim. The Red Cross have offered psychological 

counselling for both pupils and colleagues 

of the dead man.

Fisherman’s friend 


A fisherman in his midfifties 

had to be treated by 

the emergency services in 

Javea after being thrown 

against ironwork on the 

boat and ending up in the 

sea. 

The incident happened 

about 15 nautical miles out 

to sea when the man slipped, 

hit a winch and was tossed 

into the water. 

His colleagues managed to 

get him back on board and 

contacted the ambulance 

service who were waiting on 

the dock when the boat returned. 

The fisherman suffered 

broken ribs and had 

water on the lungs but is 

expected to make a full recovery. 

Sources say that the victim 

is due to retire shortly, 

a move that may now be 

brought forward.

THE Fila Ballesters Moors 

and Christians association 

have announced a show 

for all the family to help 

welcome in Christmas. 

“Noches de Arabia” (Arabian 

Nights) is a musical 

based on the story of Aladdin 

and will be performed 

for one night only at the 

Palau Municipal d’Esports 

on 22 December. 

The show is a performance 

by the Gabriel Amador ballet 

company.

and €12 from the box office

A 100-year-old teddy bear that helped a 

World War Two airman convalesce has undergone 

a delicate restoration. 

Bobby Bear was the childhood toy of RAF 

wireless operator Joe Mack, who flew with 

one of the elite Pathfinder crews based in 

Bourn, Cambridgeshire. 

The “treasured keepsake” was faithfully mended 

by a team of specialists for the BBC TV Repair 

Shop series series. 

Mr Mack’s daughter, Kris Johnston, said the 

family wanted Bobby “conserved rather than 

changed”, keeps his trademark wonky smile. 

The “fragile” bear was loaned to the Pathfinder 

collection at RAF Wyton in Cambridgeshire and 

formed the centrepiece for its 75th anniversary 

last year. 

Joe Mack died at the age of 72 in 1994 but 

his family said he would have been “overjoyed 

that Bobby Bear is still going – and will go on 

for generations”.

A husky dog started a house fire after managing to turn the 

microwave on. 

The husky, which was left on its own in the semi-detached 

home in Stanford-le-Hope, Essex managed to turn on the worktop 

appliance. 

A packet of bread rolls, left inside, began to burn, causing a 

small fire, Essex Fire Service said. 

The owner saw smoke in the kitchen from a camera feed on 

their phone. 

Geoff Wheal from the Essex Fire Service called it a “very 

strange incident” and said firefighters found the kitchen filled 

with smoke, but they made sure the flames did not spread to the 

rest of the house. 

The dog was not hurt, the service added.

I can think of a number of so-called 

comedians that deserve a rough ride, but 

certainly not the amiable Nish Kumar who 

was booed off stage after making Brexit 

and political jokes at a charity event on 

Monday night. 

Kumar, who hosts the BBC’s Mash 

Report and is a panel show regular, was 

performing for free at the Lord’s Taverners 

annual charity cricket lunch. 

“You are the only audience in my entire 

13-year history of performing that have 

actually thrown something at me,” Kumar 

said, after a bread roll hit the stage. 

The event, at London’s Grosvenor House, 

was raising money to give vulnerable 

children a start in life through sport, but 

audience members couldn’t see the funny 

side. 

Kumar refused to leave the stage after the 

boos and a slow hand clap started, and 

the show host eventually escorted him off, 

after also having a go at the crowd.

MR Smith, a UK Expat Spanish 

resident, was looking to take 

some money out of his pension. 

He phoned the Life Company in 

the UK and said he wanted £10,000 

to buy a new car. 

They told him, that as he was not 

yet aged over 55 he couldn’t take any 

money out of the pension under pension 

rules. They also said that even if 

he could take all or some of the money 

out, he would need to take advice 

from a Financial Adviser authorised 

to be able to advise him in Spain. 

Whilst Mr Smith was looking for 

an adviser locally, he suddenly got 

contacted out of the blue. He rang 

them back and the caller said they 

were financial advisers in Spain specialising 

in high return investments 

and also specialised in pensions that 

allow clients to access their pension 

before they reach age 55. They would 

also allow him a free pension review 

and if he acted quickly he would have 

access to investments returning a 

guaranteed 20% a year for any money 

left invested in the pension pot. 

Mr Smith couldn’t wait to send back 

the forms! In the end poor Mr Smith 

was scammed out of all of his pension 

fund, he had NOTHING LEFT! 

When reading the above, hopefully 

you can identify some of the pension 

scammer’s tactics. These include: 

Contact out of the blue (either by 

phone or email), promises of high 

guaranteed returns, pressure to act 

quickly, access to your pension before 

age 55 and free pension reviews. 

Another scam is where scammers 

design attractive offers to persuade 

you to transfer your pension pot to 

them or to release funds from it. It 

is then invested in high-risk funds 

such as overseas property, renewable 

energy bonds, forestry, storage 

units or it can be simply stolen outright! 

Funds such as these are not 

regulated so there is no way to get 

any money back. So how can you 

protect yourself? Firstly, it is perfectly 

true that if you are resident in 

Spain and you have a UK Pension 

such as Stakeholder or a Personal 

Pension that you will 

not be able to get UK 

regulated financial 

advice or recommendations 

to transfer, 

leave, or take money 

from your UK pension. 

For Company 

Pensions the rules 

are different. However, 

this does not mean 

you need to jump on 

a plane to go back to 

the UK to get advice! 

It does mean though 

that you will need 

to find a Financial 

Adviser that is regulated to give financial 

advice in Spain to UK expats 

resident here.

MIFID II license to advise on QROPs

NIE, and time may be of the

What is an 

NIE? 

Its full name is Número de 

Identidad de Extranjero, 

which translates as ‘Foreigners’ 

Identification Number’. 

All non-Spaniards require an 

NIE in order to have a fiscal 

identity in Spain. 

You will need your unique 

NIE number, which will 

start with an ‘X’ or ‘Y’ followed 

by seven or eight digits 

and then a final letter, 

to complete any type of financial 

transaction or legal 

documentation, from buying 

a property or car, to starting 

a business, being employed, 

getting connected to utilities 

and filing your Spanish 

tax return (which even nonresident 

homeowners must 

do). 

Some banks will ask for 

your NIE just to open an 

account with them. 

Remember that an NIE is 

a separate thing to getting a 

residencia, which is a different 

process altogether. New 

arrivals in Spain should 

obtain their NIE within 90 

days of moving here, whether 

or not they are purchasing 

property. 

Applying in 

person 

There is nothing stopping 

braver people applying for 

their NIE themselves, but 

for peace of mind, Sun Lawyers

everything, which is especially 

daunting if you are 

new to Spain. 

Applications must be made 

at any police station that has 

an immigration office, or 

‘Oficina de Extranjeros’. 

You’ll need to submit your 

completed NIE application 

forms (EX-15) along with 

supporting documentation. 

You’ll also need to pay the 

small application fee (approximately 

€10) at a bank 

using a Model 790 form, 

showing proof of payment at 

the police station. 

Supporting documents 

typically includes your 

passport and photocopy of 

the main page, a document 

(and photocopy) that validates 

your reason for getting 

an NIE (eg a notarised 

letter or deposit contract for 

a property) and a passport 

photo. 

We will make sure that 

you have the the right papers, 

but in some instances, 

you may need to make an 

appointment, otherwise you 

can simply turn up, but be 

prepared to wait. 

Once your application is 

submitted, you must wait 

for your NIE certificate to 

be issued, ready for collection 

from the police station 

or sent by post to an address 

in Spain.

ONE of the landmark properties as 

you drive along the N-332 in the 

Pedreguer area is up for sale. 

The El Quijote show bar, a “hostess 

club” that has had various run ins 

with the authorities down the years 

is now on the market with a local estate 

agent for €2.5 million. 

The properties official function is 

as a cabaret bar with hotel rooms and 

it is now being marketed as an aparthotel. 

It is certainly a sizeable place, 


with 50 rooms and over 3,500 m2 of 

space and boasts of its “excellent location 

near schools, a chemist and bus 

stop”, amenities which were probably 

not uppermost for the majority of El 

Quijote’s clientele. 

Many locals will be glad to see the 

establishment repurposed although 

its future function remains vague.

facing a lack of bank loans for 

small and mid-sized developments, 

according to industry 

representatives. 

The comments were made at 

a conference organised by the IE 

Real Estate Club, part of a business 

school, and Urbanitae, a real 

estate investment platform. 

Representatives from building 

and investment groups talked 

about the financing options open 

to Spanish developers in the current 

market. 

Carolina Roca, General Manager 

of the developer Grupo Roca, 

and VP of the Asprima builders’ 

association in Madrid, said 

that banks are cutting off loans 

to small and mid-sized developers, 

many of whom need 100 per 

cent financing above land acquisition 

costs. 

Banks are reportedly tightening 

up their lending conditions, 

meaning that only the biggest developers 

backed by international 

funds who can afford to finance 

30 to 40 per cent of development 

costs from equity can now get financing 

from banks with interest 

rates of around two per cent. 

The problem is that if small 

and mid-sized developers turn 

to alternative sources of funding 

other than banks, interest 

rates shoot up to eight per cent or 

more, making development projects 

harder to go through win. 

In a large number of cases, the 

sums then don´t add up in a competitive 

market in terms of new 

house prices. 

Spain is dominated by large 

builders like many other European 

countries like Britain, with 

smaller developers being the 

main factor in this country. 

According to industry estimates 

the top two biggest home 

builders in Spain have a tiny 

share of just a per cent of the 

market, compared to around 20 

per cent in Britain. 

That means if the banks are 

getting tight, the logic is that new 

builds in Spain could start to fall 

over the next few months or so.

AVERAGE prices for both 

new build and secondhand 

homes in the Balearic 

and Canary Islands 

grew by 11.3 per cent in 

November compared with 

the same month last year, 

according to Tinsa, one 

of the leading real estate 

valuation services. 

House prices increased by 

an average of 3.7 per cent 

across Spain as a whole last 

month, in line with the yearto-date 

increase of 3.8 per 

cent. 

Only the island territories 

have seen an annual average 

increase of over 5 per cent 

in 2019. 

Average house prices in 


regional capitals and bigger 

cities have gone up by 4.6 per 

cent and 2.5 per cent respectively 

over the past year. 

The Mediterranean coast 

on the other hand has seen 

a year-on-year rise of only 

0.3 per cent, lower than that 

seen in smaller towns or 

“remaining municipalities” 

where prices have risen by 

1.3 per cent over the past 

12 months. 

Compared with figures 

published at the end of 2018, 

house prices across Spain 

have gone up by an average 

of 2.4 per cent. 

Only the islands, regional 

capitals and big cities have 

shown above average increases, 

with rises of 6.2 per cent 

and 3.6 per cent respectively. 

Since the house-price lows 

registered at the end of the 

recession, house prices in 

Spain have gone up by an 

average of 16.8 per cent, with 

bigger leaps in the case of the 

Balearic and Canary Islands 

(+29.1 per cent), regional 

capitals and big cities (+26.8 

per cent), the Mediterranean 

coast (+15.8 per cent) and 

metropolitan areas (+13.6 

per cent). 

In all other areas the 

rise was much smaller (5.5 

per cent).

Cariad have said that 40% 

of the people it is helping 

are now women, a figure 

that has been rising 

steadily over the last few 

years. 

The charity said that this 

is a concern as the females 

they help are more vulnerable 

and highly subject to 

exploitation outside of a 

stable family and home environment. 

In the past many people 

who used the centres, over 

half, were Latin American 


males moving to Spain for 

economic reasons and using 

the shelters temporarily until 

they got on their feet. 

The increase in the number 

of female users have 

various reasons, including a 

lack of affordable housing, 

unstable work situations 

and being unable to both 

work and care for children. 

In the last survey 49% of 

the users were Spanish nationals, 

just under 10% native 

Valencians. 

SPAIN is one of the best 

countries in Europe to get 

a property mortgage, with 

many good deals around, 

along with low costs 

and flexibility. 

After the new mortgage 

law came into force in June, 

buyers are in a better position, 

certainly in theory. 

Banks now have to pay the 

setup costs over a mortgage 

including the Actos Juridicos 

Documentados(AJD) tax. 

In the past, the house purchasers 

were in charge of 

paying the registration fee, 

stamp duty, and the notary 


fees, but now the bank assumes 

that cost. 

On buying a property, the 

two things to will have to 

shell out for are:- 

The valuation fee that the 

bank needs to realize in order 

to assess the real value 

of the property. That is a 

fixed fee of between 300 and 

500€. 

Arrangement fee, which 

varies from bank to bank, 

but usually is one to oneand-a-half 

per cent. 

There are some banks that 

are even assuming these two 

costs, making it even a better 

deal for you (but not all of 

them will). 

Other factors in play in 

getting a good mortgage 

deal are Spain’s low interest 

rates, which are the lowest 

for some three decades, but 

on the downside with everything 

that has been mentioned, 

banks are generally 

only financing up to 70 per 

cent of a property. 

In Spain there are three 

main types of mortgages: 

variable (adjusted with the 

Euribor interest rate), fixed, 

and mixed (a combination 

of both). 

Buy-to-let and interest-only 

mortgages are not available 

in Spain. 

Mortgage terms are usually 

from five to 40 years 

maximum, and if you are a 

non-resident you will be at 

the lower end of this range, 

as opposed to being a fulltime 

resident. 

It will take up to a couple 

of months to get a mortgage 

done and dusted, and 

you will be able to enjoy 

your property.

LIVING on an urbanisation 

or private estate formed of 

apartments, houses or villas 

is common practice in 

Spain, and has a number 

of things going for it, especially 

if you are looking buy 

over here for the first time. 

Facilities like swimming 

pools, communal gardens and 

play areas for the kids, give 

you everything you need right 

on your doorstep. 

It’s also good to keep family 

members coming to stay with 

you nice and occupied, rather 

than having your whole day 

mapped out for you. 

Most estates have 

their own supermarkets 

and restaurants. 

Urbanisation properties 

tend to make for a good holiday 

home, and even better, 

when you’re not there, there 

should be plenty of opportunity 

to rent it out to other people 

looking for a short-term 

holiday let. Community spirit 

is all too lacking nowadays, 

but living on an urbanisation 

gives you a chance to make a 

group of friends, either of the 

same nationality as you or 

from around the world. 

Things to watch 

out for: 

While all the legal aspects 

of buying a property on a 

residential estate are usually 

very secure thanks to the fact 

that the whole community, 

everyone else who has bought 

there, are all under the same 

contractual obligations. 

It is still advisable, as whenever 

you buy property, to use 

a solicitor rather than doing 

it yourself. 

In this way, you can ensure 

that you don’t get bitten by 

any unexpected maintenance 

costs all year round for the 

communal areas, as these 

can raise the total buying 

price considerably. 

Also, be advised to research 

very carefully where exactly 

the urbanisation is located 

if you are virtually new to 

the area. 

Check out road links and 

public bus services, and of 

course visit an urbanisation 

yourself, before making any 

kind of commitment. 

If you are after a finca in a 

quiet spot, then that of course 

is what some buyers want. 

But there are others who 

would regard as living on an 

urbanisation as the perfect option 

for them.

people to be #Dog- 

Kind this Christmas after 

a survey revealed a fifth of 

owners believe it’s okay to 

leave their dogs alone for 

over 24 hours. 

They are urging people to 

be aware of ‘separation anxiety’ 

and ensure they have 

considered appropriate care 

for their pets as the busy festive 

season approaches. 

The RSPCA survey also 

revealed that 39 per cent of 

dog owners leave their fourlegged 

friend home alone for 

seven or more hours on an 

average day. 

The organisation’s #Dog- 

Kind campaign manager 

Daisy Hopson said: “The festive 

season is nearly upon us 

and we know that it’s a busy 

time of year for most families. 

“As people prepare for office 

parties, long days out 

Christmas shopping and plan 

to go away for the holidays, 

it’s extremely important that 

dog owners consider their 

pets too. For those dogs who 

are happy being left home 

alone, we recommend leaving 

them for no more than 

four hours at a time. 

“If you’re going to be out

Research has also suggested 

that 85 per cent of dogs 

may suffer from separationrelated 

anxiety, feeling frightened,

their owners head out to work 

or pops out for the evening.” 

Up to 50 per cent of dogs 

don’t show signs that they’re 

struggling, the experts say. 

They are urging people to 

check for hidden signs, such 

as pacing or excessive lip licking, 

by filming their dog when 

they’re out. 

Dog welfare expert Dr Samantha 

Gaines said: “Some 

dogs who suffer when they’re 

left home alone may display 

quite obvious signs – such as 

barking, whining, toileting or 

destroying things. 

“But others will simply sit 

there, suffering in silence, 

which means you may not 

know if there’s a problem. 

“Thankfully, you can help 

your dog learn that it’s okay 

to be left alone and there are 

techniques you can try at 

home to help your dog feel 

happier when you’re out.

your risk of developing 

lung cancer by up to 

10 per cent, a shock new 

report has revealed. 

The worrying study also 

says that the levels or roadside 

air pollution in busy cities 

can stunt children’s lung 

growth by up to 14 per cent. 

And it comes as a new survey 

revealed that two thirds 

(71 per cent) of Europeans 

think the EU should bring 

in tougher measures to improve 

air quality. 

The report, written by 

King’s College, London, has 

been released by a coalition 

of 15 health and environment 

NGOs. 

It shows an increased 

risk of cardiac arrest, heart 

disease, stroke, lung cancer, 

bronchitis. 

And it is the first time that 

such a wide range of health 

conditions and cities have 

been analysed in one report, 

with the research comparing 

13 different health outcomes 

across 13 cities in the UK 

and Poland. 

The research focused 

not just on hospital admissions 

and deaths but 

also symptoms such as 

chest infections. 

The report also says 

that living near a busy 

road can trigger bronchitic 

symptoms among children 

with asthma. 

And if pollution was reduced 

by one-fifth, there 

would be 3,865 fewer cases 

of children with bronchitic 

symptoms every year in 

London alone. 

Andrea Lee, clean air campaigns 

and policy manager 

at campaign group ClientEarth, 

said: “Toxic air puts 

an unfair burden on people’s 

lives. The good news is that 

solutions are available. But 

much more needs to be done. 

“If politicians were not 

already convinced by the 

abundant evidence that air 

pollution seriously harms 

our health, could this new research 

be the tipping point?” 

Dr Rob Hughes, senior fellow 

at the Clean Air Fund, 

described the situation as a 

public health crisis. 

He added: “Air pollution 

makes us, and especially our 

children, sick from cradle to 

grave, but is often invisible.”

Panama City 

PANAMA City (or simply 

Panama) is the capital 

and largest city of 

the country of the same 

name, located in Central 

America and surrounded 

by Costa Rica, Columbia, 

the Pacific Ocean and the 

Caribbean sea. 

The country can trace its 

routes back beyond the 16th 

century when only indigenous 

tribes lived there. It 

was declared a city in 1519 

by a Spanish conquistador 

and remained a colony of 

Spain before breaking away 

to form a part of the Republic 

of Columbia, before seceding 

in 1903 from this latest 

union and becoming independent. 

In the years 1904 

– 1914, American troops 

built that which it is prob- 

ably most famous for – the 

Panama Canal. 

A city with much history, 

it was burned to the ground 

in 1671, to be rebuilt close 

by, however the ruins and 

remains of the original city 

still remain and form an important 

tourist attraction of 

the city. 

Being strategically situated, 

Panama became the 

launching point for the exploration 

of Peru, and much 

of the Inca Gold travelled 

through Panama en route 

to Spain. With the launch 

of the railroad, this brought 

closer ties to the United 

States and was influential 

in the rapid expansion of the

Today, the city is a mix of 

modern skyscraper buildings 

and hotels in the new 

part of the city, and old rustic

MASERATI CELEBRATES 

105 YEARS OF HISTORY 

AS it begins the modernisation 

work at the Modena 

plant and plans a big event 

for May 2020, when it will 

be starring on the global 

stage, Maserati celebrates 

its roots and its more than a 

century of history. Indeed, it 

was 105 years ago that Alfieri 

Maserati joined forces 

with his brothers Ettore and 

Ernesto to open the “Alfieri 

Maserati” at number 1A on 

via de’ Pepoli, in the heart 

of Bologna. 

The business was founded in 

Bologna on 1 December 1914, 

but officially the activities of 

the mechanical workshop began 

trading on 14 December. 

The Maserati brothers were 

passionate about mechanical 

engineering and loved 

speed, quite happy to get behind 

the wheel of a racing 

car themselves, despite their 

many technical and commercial 

commitments. Another 

brother, Mario, contributed by 

creating the famous Trident 

logo (inspired by the Fountain 

of Neptune in the centre of Bologna) 

and their brother Bindo 

joined Officine Maserati in 

1932, after Alfieri’s death. 

The first car to bear the Trident 

logo was built in 1926. It 

was the Tipo 26, a racing car 

which debuted at the Targa 

Florio that same year, winning 

first place in the class up to 1.5 

L, with Alfieri Maserati at the 

wheel. This was the first in a 

long series of successes, including 

two consecutive editions 

of the Indianapolis 500 (1939 

and 1940), four consecutive 

victories in the Targa Florio 

(1937, 1938, 1939 and 1940), 

nine F1 wins and the 1957 

F1 World Championship with 

Juan Manuel Fangio. More 

recently, Maserati returned 

to its winning ways with the 

MC12, the car which, between 

2005 and 2010, won six FIA 

GT international championships, 

the highest-level racing 

category for production-derived 

GT cars. 

Maserati remained in Bologna 

until 1939. In late September 

1939, following the acquisition 

of the Brand by the 

Orsi family, operations began 

for the transfer of the Maserati 

headquarters from Bologna 

(Pontevecchio, where it had 

moved in the meantime) to 

Modena, where the Orsi family’s 

businesses were based, 

to build new cars, invest in 

research and innovation and 

become Modena’s most globally 

famous Brand. The production 

site on Viale Ciro Menotti, 

where the plant is still located, 

officially opened its doors on 1 

January 1940. 

The year 1947 marked the 

end of one era and the start 

of a new one. The Maserati 

brothers’ collaboration with 

the company ended, while 

the Brand launched its first 

road car, the A6 1500. In 1963, 

Maserati started another new 

phase of its history: with the 

launch of the Quattroporte, it 

created a completely new, previously 

non-existent market 

segment, that of high-performance 

luxury sedans. 

After the brief period under 

the ownership of Citroën 

(1967-1975), during which 

the French owners introduced 

the first modern industrial 

processes, in the following De 

Tomaso period (1976-1993), 

the Modena plant created and 

sold a model destined to be 

one of the Brand’s best-known, 

best-selling cars: the Biturbo. 

The acquisition by Fiat in 

1993 was the start of a major 

new chapter, which led to 

Maserati coming under the 

control of Ferrari in September 

1997. These were years of 

major transformations, which 

saw the birth of the 3200 GT 

(1998), followed by the Spyder 

(2001), a car which marked 

the important return to the 

US market. 

In 2005, Maserati was 

separated from Ferrari and 

returned to the control of 

the Fiat Group. 2007 was a 

very successful year, with the 

debut at the Detroit Motor 

Show of the Quattroporte (5th 

generation) with automatic 

transmission, enabling an 

important step forward, especially 

in markets such as the 

United States, Japan and the 

Middle East. The same year 

saw the presentation at the 

Geneva International Motor 

Show of the GranTurismo, 

another milestone in Maserati’s 

history. 

In 2009 it was the turn of 

the GranCabrio, followed by 

other new products that significantly 

renewed the range: 

the new Quattroporte (now in 

6th generation and presented 

at the 2013 Detroit Motor 

Show), the Ghibli (Shanghai 

Motor Show in 2013) and the 

Levante (2016 Geneva International 

Motor Show), the 

first SUV for the Brand.

RACING CAR OF THE YEAR” 

THE “Electric Racing Car 

of the Year” award was 

presented to the fullyelectrically 

driven Volkswagen 

ID.R at the “Race 

Night” on the eve of the 

Essen Motor Show. 

This year’s auto show (30 

November to 8 December 

2019) is once again proving 

to be a major attraction 

for car and motorsport fans 

from all over Europe. The 

prize, awarded by Auto Bild 

sportscars and Auto Bild motorsport, 

acknowledges the 

technology and successes of 

the 680 PS electric racing 

car, which has set five records 

in four countries, on 

three continents, in the past 

two years. 

“I am delighted that the 

ID.R has been chosen as the 

racing car of the year in the 

Electro category this year”, 

says Volkswagen Motorsport 

Director Sven Smeets, who 

picked up the prize at the 

Race Night. 

“I receive the trophy as 

a representative of the entire 

Volkswagen Motorsport 

team, which has performed 

so magnificently over the 

past two years. This prize 

also acknowledges the engineers 

and technicians behind 

the project, who are often 

away from the limelight 

but contribute hugely to 

its success.” 

The development of the 

ID.R began at the end of 

2017 and, behind the wheel 

of the racing car, Frenchman 

Romain Dumas set the 

first record at the Pikes Peak 

International Hill Climb 

in Colorado (USA) in June 

2018. The dynamic duo then 

proceeded to break the electric 

record at the Goodwood 

Festival of Speed (GB). Dumas 

claimed three more records 

with the ID.R in 2019: 

the ID.R now holds the record 

for the fastest lap by an 

electric car on the Nürburgring 

Nordschleife, as well 

as securing the overall track 

record in Goodwood and at 

Tianmen Mountain in China.

U3A Golf 

Tournament 

ON 26th Nov 2019, 16 

members of U3A Golf 

Teulada Moraira made 

the journey south to the 

Bonalba Golf Course, 

situated on the outskirts 

of Alicante. The journey 

time only being a pleasant 

drive of about 45 minutes. 

Again we were lucky with 

the weather, being a warm 

day with moderate winds. 

So they all laughed at my 

shorts but I was happy as 

the sun rose. 

At each game we have a 

sweep stake for the total 

number of balls the members 

will lose during their 

round. We had a rollover 

from the last game and the 

lucky winner was Brian 

Russell with a guess of 28 

for a handsome prize of €36. 

My friend Brian from Ifach 

Golf Club is going through 

a “purple patch”. Long may 

it continue. 

The course is very fussy 

about showing proof of Federation 

or paying the Insurance 

Fee (€1.50). It’s a 

shame they are not so keen 

on keeping the course in 

playable condition. The tees 

were average, fairways bad 

in places and the greens 

need attention. They also 

should remember that positioning 

a pin on a slope 

is only reasonable if the 

ball can be stopped. We all 

missed those 2 metre putts 

back up the slope! 

The format for the day 

was Individual Stableford 

and after 18 holes of competition 

we had our winners: 

1st with 41 points, Ian 

Pearce. 2nd with 39 points, 

Peter Davies. 3rd with 38 

points, Gordon Mitchell

made it into the next round, 

with the biggest winner being 

Liz’s Cookies Crew 61 

beating Macca’s Albir Villains 

36-15.

through while the rank outsider, 

Jenny’s Madam Tree, 

produced the shock of the 

round by disposing of one of 

our top Junior teams, Olly’s 

11, by 30-26.

ENGLAND will face Austria and 

Romania in June during their 

pre-tournament training camp for 

Euro 2020. 

Gareth Southgate’s side will play 

Austria in Vienna on Tuesday June 

2nd prior to hosting Romania five 

days later at a venue yet to be decided. 

Those games have been added to a 

match against Denmark at Wembley 

on March 31st. 

The FA said an opponent for a game 

at Wembley on Friday March 27th 

will “be confirmed in due course”. 

In Saturday´s draw, England were 

put with Croatia, the Czech Republic 

and a play-off winner from Scotland, 

Norway, Serbia and Israel in their 

Euro 2020 group. 

The tournament starts on 

June 12th. 

FORMER Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino says he 

is “open to listen to projects” in Europe as he plans a 

return to management. 

The 47-year-old spent five-and-a-half years in charge 

of Spurs before being sacked last month and replaced by 

Jose Mourinho. 

“There are a lot of clubs and attractive projects for me to 

take on,” Pochettino told Fox Sports Argentina. 

“It is my intention to return to manage in Europe.” 

He added: “But now I need to be calm for a few days and 

see what happens.” 

He has returned to his native Argentina following his 

exit from Spurs and has been linked with Arsenal and Bayern 

Munich. 

Arsenal have Freddie Ljundberg in charge after Unai

IF at the start of the decade you´d have to watch, but the sheer candour of Murray 

said that tennis star Andy Murray was and his friends and family shines through a 

full of public star quality, then a quick bit of must-see TV that will appeal to viewers 

who have little or no time for any sport, 

meeting with the men in white coats 

may have been in order.

ELECTION STUNT 

LA Liga president Javier Tebas resigned 

from his post on Monday in a move to 

boost his position in a re-election. 

Tebas, 57, has been in charge since 2013, 

when he replaced Jose Luis Astiazaran, 

with his existing mandate due to run until 

October 2020. 

“I have decided to resign from my role as 

president so that a new electoral process 

starts, which I plan to run in,” Tabas said. 

“I hope to gain support to stay four 

more years.” 

Tebas, who previously stood down in 

2016 before being elected unopposed, explained 

his decision by saying elections in 

October would be too close to the launch 

of new tenders for La Liga’s audiovisual 

rights. 

BRITAIN´S Anthony Joshua will go for 

revenge in Saudi Arabia this Saturday 

night(10.00pm) as he looks to regain the 

three heavyweight belts that he lost in a 

shock defeat to Andy Ruiz Jr in June. 

Joshua told the BBC that he chose to “reinvent” 

himself after defeat to the outsider 

and and feels “different” going into Saturday’s 

rematch. 

The so-called ‘Clash on the Dunes’ is the 

highly anticipated rematch of Joshua’s shuddering 

defeat at the hands of Ruiz in New 

York, when he was floored no fewer than four
