Edward H Johnson, the
vice president of Edison’s
Electric Light Company,
decorated his tree with 80
specially made bulbs that
he displayed in the window
of his Fifth Avenue home in
Manhattan, New York.
At the time, WA Croffut,
a veteran writer for
the Detroit Post and Tribune
wrote: “At the rear of
the beautiful parlors, was
a large Christmas tree presenting
a most picturesque
and uncanny aspect.
“It was brilliantly lighted
with...eighty lights in all encased
in these dainty glass
eggs, and about equally divided
between white, red
and blue.... One can hardly
imagine anything prettier.”
Joyti Gohil, lighting expert
at hardware retailer
Robert Dyas, explains: “Festive

around the Christmas tree.
