2019 DCN AUSTRALIAN SHIPPING & MARITIME INDUSTRY AWARDS NEWSMAKER OF THE YEAR AWARD WINNER TERESA LLOYD, CEO, MARITIME INDUSTRY AUSTRALIA LIMITED Teresa provided the evidence needed via the MIAL Seafaring Skills Census, to show the looming maritime skills shortage and underpinned MIAL’s work to preserve and build Australia’s maritime skills base. MIAL has just announced a new scope of work, seeking information from employees and managers on maritime diversity. Teresa has fought for the abolition of the Seacare workers’ compensation scheme, seeking a better and more sustainable system. She has also driven awareness of the potential impact of the sulphur cap 2020 not just within the maritime industry but across the Australian economy and has pushed the coastal trading debate, including via discussion panels prior to this year’s federal election. MIAL contributed to the sourcing of $160m for the SBAS (Satellite Based Augmentation System) Project, vital for safe navigation in Australia. Teresa has championed women and diversity for example speaking at the AMSA-facilitated IMO World Maritime Day function this year in Sydney, attended by IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim. Situated within the Port of Melbourne, the facility began operations in mid-2016 and has been servicing the Victorian market as the sole provider of terminal services to the PCC and ro-ro segments. The terminal will increase the ports vehicle and rolling cargo capacity to about one million units. Key features include 14,000 automotive laydown bays, 20,000 square metres of heavy-duty hardstand, two wash bays and a 120-tonne gantry crane. At the time of judging, MIRRAT had facilitated 841 vessel calls and handled more than 830,000 units across a wide variety of commodities.
