Sandra Oh was born in Ontario, Canada to South Korean parents. Among her many achievements on stage and screen,<br />

she has particularly achieved international acclaim for her roles in the medical drama series, Grey’s Anatomy, and more<br />

recently for her outstanding performance as Eve Polastri in the BBC America spy drama, Killing Eve. “As Sandra has a long<br />

face shape, curly hair with volume and micro fringe suit her very well,” comments Tasha. “She could also try variations in<br />

her style, but going chin-length and adding soft waves or even a Hollywood wave. On the colour front, she really looks great<br />

with the golden-brownish highlights, which help to energise her look and make it more fresh and candid.”<br />

A degree in anthropology from the University of Colorado, a past career as a model, and currently a professional<br />

beauty photographer. And one peculiarity: in this digitalized era Laura Okita shoots photographs on a medium<br />

format film. Her past as a model left her with some special sensitivity as a photographer that enables her to<br />

approach the faces of her subjects with audacity, as well as an equal amount of delicacy. To burn onto the film an<br />

unusual take on beauty. “Culture and society have always sought to define parameters and specifications for beauty,<br />

but the truth is that they are never constant and are evolving continuously.” This is why she is convinced that each<br />

and every element of a look is important: “Hair, make-up, garments, light, all come together to create the shot, the<br />

success of which depends on the model, the inspiration of the moment, and the concept that I want to convey.”<br />

For this whole influenced by so many variables, Laura insists that the entire team be on the same page: “Each<br />

professional has their own way of interpreting the concept. I think that knowing the style of each one is essential<br />

to be able to visualize the look before it is created.”<br />

event, the <strong>2019</strong> OMC Hairworld in Paris offered a<br />

fascinating live competition of global hairdressing in terms<br />

of amazing creativity, technical skill and true artistry.<br />

The <strong>2019</strong> OMC Hairworld competition demanded several practical trials, giving us a grand number of talent to watch<br />

in real time at Porte de Versailles Exhibition Hall in Paris. This means that the competitions honored hairdressers<br />

from more than one country for their skill alone, embodying a true emblem of the industry’s penchant for celebrating<br />

the craft. The OMC Hairworld celebration could not have been more successful, enticing over 1,300 attendees from<br />

50 nations who dared to compete on the opulent Parisian stage. Hairdressing and Beauty talent abounded as competitors<br />

stood next to their creations with pride, and of course there was no limit to how breathtaking these looks could be.<br />

Outstanding styles leant more towards the unexpected while emphasizing the editorial beauty of current trends.<br />

Olympics, the <strong>2019</strong> OMC Hairworld Competition,<br />

and welcomed guests with glorious displays of their<br />

On Hair elevated Turin to the hair capital of the world with shows<br />

by top global artists, plus <strong>Estetica</strong> Master Class & Festival Barber.<br />

An audience of 12,000 experienced over 30 shows by international hair artists alongside exhibition spaces showcasing<br />

80 leading hair companies in Turin at the 10th On Hair Show & Exhibition by Cosmoprof Worldwide Bologna. “We have<br />

celebrated the tenth On Hair Show & Exhibition in the best way imaginable,” said Enrico Zannini, General Manager of<br />

BolognaFiere Cosmoprof. “Turin became the capital of hairstyling for two days: a profession that is ever growing and<br />

evolving as an industry, especially in its power to showcase brand “Made in Italy”. The show was partnered by <strong>Estetica</strong><br />

Master Class, in cooperation with ESTETICA magazine, with 4 Top International Hair Teams showcased: X Presion for<br />

The event also incorporated the Italian Hairdresser Award <strong>2019</strong>,<br />

an initiative awarding excellence, creativity and passion by Italian<br />

hairdressers. Lorenzo Marchelle was the winner of the Best<br />

Hairdresser of the Year title – awarded to the hairdresser best able to<br />

raise the bar of Italian hairdressing to new levels of excellence through<br />

skill, talent and dedication. Among the other winners, <strong>Estetica</strong><br />

magazine chose Matteo Susini for the Best Cover Image award.<br />

The Festival Barber, in collaboration with Spaghetti’s, welcomed<br />

on-stage some the most talented and creative barbers working today:<br />

Barber Birdman, Hayden Cassidy, Jarreds Barber, Josh Lamonaca,<br />

Julius Cvesar, Titan Barber, Zena Yu and Vishal Baharani. They have<br />

all been instrumental of the evolution of men's hairstyles and its<br />

Almost 3.000 guests came together in the Austrian capital city<br />

of Vienna to experience Global Zoom, which as always was a<br />

spectacular celebration of the KAO Salon Division family and its<br />

creative and technical achievement over the previous 12 months.


The autumn sun shone beautifully over the Austrian capital for the entire<br />

weekend of Kao Salon Division's spectacular Global Zoom celebration.<br />

Visitors from around the world were excited to learn that this is the last year<br />

that this annual event and the Color Zoom Challenge will take place in their<br />

current format. John Moroney, Vice President Creative & Communication at<br />

Kao Salon Division, explained that the <strong>2019</strong> Color Zoom collection would be<br />

the last one: “This year we’re launching the 2020 Goldwell Couture Collection<br />

On Sunday, September 29, John Moroney (Vice President Creative & Communication) opened the Global Zoom Event <strong>2019</strong>. The<br />

Welcome Session started directly with the first highlight: the announcement of Goldwell’s annual Style Statement for 2020: HAIR<br />

I COLOR I STYLE. Directly after the Welcome Session, the Community Area opened its doors and the Academy Sessions started.

mastery of their craft. Mario Krankl<br />

presented his up-dos and avant-garde<br />

styles to open the Gala Show on<br />

Sunday evening; Hare & Bone and M&P,<br />

both highly accomplished salon groups<br />

from London, presented the world<br />

premiere of their latest collection; led<br />

by the Goldwell international artist,<br />

Sascha Haseloff, icono presented their<br />

latest collection and showed why<br />

they are one of the top hairdressing<br />

academies in Europe.<br />

The Global Zoom weekend ended<br />

with a fantastic farewell party<br />

in the mesmerising and opulent<br />

surrounds of the Hofburg Palace<br />

in the heart of Vienna (see left<br />

and below); a fitting conclusion to<br />

what proved to be a memorable<br />

and awe-inspiring weekend.


Guests assembled in the Reed Messe auditorium in Vienna as excitement escalated towards the announcement<br />

of this year’s Color Zoom Challenge winners. Hairdressers were participating in 3 different categories - Partner,<br />

Creative & New Talent, demonstrating the current Goldwell Color Zoom Collection - REMIX. All 91 national finalists<br />

from 38 different countries competed live. The Gold winners: J Lim from Singapore, New Talent category- for young,<br />

creative colourists with less than five years of professional experience; Irakli Sardalishvili from Russia, Creative<br />

category - for colour creations by stylists with 5 years’ experience; Yuujin Ho from Singapore, Partner category -<br />

for colour creations from stylists who have worked for Goldwell in the last 2 years at shows or at seminars.<br />

STYLISTS’ FAVORITE AWARD<br />

Richard Munslow from UK (Partner<br />

category) won the Stylists’ Favorite<br />

Award, together with Courtney<br />

Cairns from UK (New Talent<br />

category) and Lauren Roma Hanlon<br />

from UK (Creative category). These<br />

are a set of awards linked to the<br />

Color Zoom Challenge. The unique<br />

feature is that anyone, anywhere in<br />

the world, can participate via an<br />

online platform and is able to choose<br />

their favourite entry from all of the<br />

National Gold Winners.


The success for Team Asia didn't end with their outstanding<br />

achievement in the Gold Awards: six more very talented artists<br />

were honoured and delighted to scoop their Bronze and Silver<br />

Awards with no fewer than four of them coming from Asian<br />

countries: Gzno Ooi from Malaysia won the Silver Award in the<br />

New Talent category; Van Dong Luong from Vietnam won the<br />

Silver Award and Fish Lai from Taiwan won the Bronze Award<br />

in the Creative category; Van Ha Hoang from Vietnam won the<br />

Silver Award in the Partner category. All in all, the fact that<br />

the supremely talented teams representing Asia won a total of<br />

six awards across the three categories is nothing less than an<br />

incredible achievement, as well as a tribute to Asian successes<br />

at the Color Zoom Challenge over the past 13 years.<br />

Goldwell also announced that the Global Zoom event will be<br />

reimagined and rebranded next year as KAO Salon Global<br />

Experience, featuring the new Global Creative Awards and it's<br />

going to be held in Amsterdam (Netherlands). It's never too early<br />

to start making your plans!

Stylists have been participating<br />

in the Goldwell Color Zoom<br />

Challenge for 17 years. In 2020<br />

the concept and the awards will<br />

change – what is the reason behind<br />

this?<br />

As with all things, it is time to<br />

change and evolve. With the rise of<br />

social media, we recognize that the<br />

individual expression of creativity<br />

is incredibly important to stylists.<br />

They want to imagine and create<br />

their own visions and put it out<br />

there for the world to see. As their<br />

partner, it give us an opportunity to<br />

help them achieve their dreams by<br />

giving them a global platform to<br />

showcase their creativity.<br />

That sounds great. Which awards<br />

and categories are new?<br />

We’ve adjusted the structure of the<br />

categories to showcase what we<br />

call the Technical Categories –<br />

which are the award categories<br />

that are a reimagining of the Color<br />

Zoom Challenge: Creative<br />

Colorist of the Year and New<br />

Talent Colorist of the Year – these<br />

are the categories that start with a<br />

photo competition and culminate<br />

in a live competition at the annual<br />

Kao Salon event. In this area, we’ve<br />

added a new category called<br />

Creative Haircutter of the Year,<br />

which is focusing just on the art of<br />

haircutting. Our newest category<br />

of awards are the Editorial<br />

Categories – a global, photo-only<br />

competition that is open to all<br />

Goldwell stylists and salons.<br />

These new Editorial Categories<br />

are: Avant Garde Stylist of the<br />

Year, Editorial Colorist of the Year,<br />

Men’s Hairstylist of the Year and<br />

Salon Team of the Year. We feel<br />

that this gives a whole new world<br />

of opportunity for all of our stylists.<br />

What is your secret tip for<br />

stylists who want to take part in<br />

the new challenge?<br />

There are so many tips to creating<br />

a great image, here’s what I always<br />

tell stylists: Invest in your model.<br />

Your model is more than just her<br />

hair and these are not just hair<br />

photos. Your model is what brings<br />

your creation to life.<br />

Other than that, just do it. Enter<br />

for the experience, winning is<br />

great, but the experience you gain<br />

and the lessons you will learn is of<br />

the most value. You will build your<br />

confidence and your eye as you<br />

continue to participate. Creativity<br />

is a muscle like anything else -<br />

you have to practice and exercise<br />

it regularly in order for it to grow.<br />

Hair & Make-up Olympics in 1997 -<br />

was held in Singapore, jointly<br />

organised by the Spa & Wellness<br />

Association Singapore and Alliance<br />

School of Nail Art and<br />

Association of International Beauty<br />

and Health Professionals. The<br />

purpose of the Asia Pacific Hair &<br />

Make-Up Olympics is to stimulate<br />

cooperation and development<br />

among hairdressing and cosmetology<br />

industry players with an aim to<br />

unite in a common cause across the<br />

Asia Pacific region, that of rasing the<br />

bar to a higher level. All competition<br />

prizes were kindly donated by<br />

sponsors and co-organisers, with<br />

the official Hairdryers from Tuft by<br />

Tai Wah Distributors Pte Ltd.<br />

Overall winners received SGD $600<br />

cash and prizes. The number of<br />

contestants this year was 158, with<br />

92 on October 11 for the Nail and<br />

Lash Competition and 68 on<br />

October 12 for the Hair & Make-up<br />

Olympics.


Beryl Ng from Macau: the Overall Winner<br />

for the 23rd APHCA Hair & Make-up Olympics<br />

Beryl studied administrative management in the Zhuhai Vocational and<br />

Technical College. After graduation, she went to work in an administrative<br />

job. Ever since Beryl was young, all her clothes had been hand-sewn by her<br />

mother, which kick-started her passion for design, eventually leading her<br />

onto make-up. While Beryl was working in her administrative job, she was<br />

also taking classes to continue building her passion for design, progressing<br />

onwards and joining the Creative Image Arts Association of Macau (CIAM)<br />

and APHCA Macau.<br />

BACK TO BASICS<br />

On a visit to a bottle plant in<br />

Germany in 1993, Charlie & Julie<br />

were thrilled by branding which used<br />

a rich yellow colour – Yellow<br />

Seduction; as a result they decided to<br />

Chihtsai<br />

adopt the standard colours of yellow<br />

by design<br />

& white to represent Chihtsai products.<br />

On returning to Taiwan, they were<br />

then prompted to hire of one of the<br />

country's most prominent calligraphers<br />

to create the Chihtsai logo. The slender<br />

and smooth design of “Chihtsai” in<br />

the logo beautifully symbolises<br />

female grace and elegance, aside by<br />

the subtitle Yellow Seduction to show<br />

the vivid characteristics of Chihtsai.<br />

Although this original design has<br />

been used for many years now, even<br />

today it's still a combination most<br />
