Hair, hair – Everywhere!<br />

While working on the feature articles in this issue, I stumbled upon<br />

so many amazing things and people. My search renewed my wonder<br />

of how the hair industry intersects with so many other fields.<br />

First I found Sheryl Tucker de Vasquez, a visionary architect who<br />

was inspired by traditional African hairstyles to create innovative and<br />

sustainable structures with sociological overtones. Simply amazing!<br />

Then there was Zsofia Kollar and her determination to use hair fiber,<br />

the strongest protein in nature, to manufacture textiles for fashion designers<br />

according to the principles of a circular economy. When I contacted<br />

Matter of Trust for updates on their efforts to recycle hair, fur, and fleece to<br />

make booms and mats to clean up oil spills, Lisa Gautier was eager to get<br />

me on a video call, during which her boundless energy and passion was<br />

evident as she explained their incredible organization and how they were<br />

moving beyond cleaning up the environment to actually nurturing it!<br />

Like me, they are making new discoveries about hair every day.<br />

So hair is of course about beauty and self-esteem, but also about culture,<br />

sociology, architecture, textiles, the environment and more. It can be<br />

inspired and inspirational and – most of all – never ceases to surprise us.<br />

from my recent collection, “Prism”. It’s<br />

all about reflecting tone through color<br />

merging, blending and sectioning to<br />

create a phenomenon of light refraction.<br />

When creating this red tone, I wanted<br />

it to look as vibrant as possible, with a<br />

gorgeous sleekness and shine. Using an<br />

intense pigment ensured the color has<br />

intense results, while also caring for the<br />

BRAIDED AND THREADED NIGERIAN HAIRSTYLES. NOW SHE STUDIES<br />

SUSTAINABLE DESIGNS WITH SOCIOLOGICAL OVERTONES.<br />

ARCHITECTURE has often been<br />

a source of inspiration for hair, as<br />

seen especially in certain avant-garde<br />

creations during competitions.<br />

Now Nigerian braided and threaded<br />

hairstyles are inspiring architect Sheryl<br />

Tucker de Vazquez to take traditional<br />

and contemporary Black hair styles and<br />

apply them at an architectural scale to<br />

create operational shading/ventilation<br />

chimneys. Moreover, the structures are<br />

both stunning and sustainable. “Coiled<br />

strands of Black hair give it a unique<br />

plasticity, allowing it to be sculpted into<br />

a myriad of forms,” explains Sheryl,<br />

who is also a professor at the University<br />

of Houston. “The Hair Salon project<br />

demonstrates how the integration of<br />

indigenous African knowledge with<br />

western systems can support resiliency<br />

in under-resourced Black communities<br />

while also affirming Black identity<br />

and culture in the public realm.”<br />

Mitchell’s passing, I immediately recalled<br />

a phone call we shared about ten years<br />

ago. I was doing an article about<br />

“hairdressers’ special hobbies”, including a<br />

profile of Angus... not for his activism or<br />

philanthropy, but for his rare car<br />

collection! I was apprehensive about our<br />

interview! After all, Angus was a “big<br />

kahuna”, a corporate guru, a world-class<br />

hair stylist, a trendsetter! And he was<br />

taking precious time out of his busy day<br />

to talk to me personally! I had no idea<br />

the profound impact our brief talk would<br />

have on me! His warmth, his affability,<br />

his boyish enthusiasm when talking<br />

about his passion. What remained with<br />

me was his spontaneous and delightful<br />

admission that he had a different hat he<br />

would wear when driving each car! And<br />

we had a chuckle like old friends. And so<br />

Angus’s passing reminded me that all<br />

that matters in life are small joys, brief<br />
