Ah, so quiet
How’s this for a New Year’s resolution
with a difference – half an hour of peace
and quiet, guaranteed, every week?
And it’s free.
It can be yours if you join Breathing Space, a gathering
with the simple aim of keeping silence that is held
every Monday evening at St Peter’s Church in Belgrave
Road, Seaford.
It started as a monthly event but soon became so
popular that it extended to become weekly. Open to
everyone, whether religious believers or not, the idea is
for a group of people to come together in the quiet of
this 800-year-old church whose special atmosphere is
ideal as a contemplation space.
Each session, held in a soft candlelight, begins with a
brief introduction and a short reading, then a bell rings
to mark the beginning of the silence, which lasts about
30 minutes. It is an opportunity for people to clear the
mind and calm
the thoughts,
to sit in silence
with others and
meditate.
Often at a first
session that half
an hour can seem quite a long time, but in subsequent
evenings it doesn’t. The reverie can work to calm. The
sessions begin at 6pm, conveniently early in the evening,
and you don’t have to book. Just turn up and join in the
circle of people, all with the same idea of sitting quietly,
thinking and meditating.
In this busy world when you feel as though there is not
enough time to do everything, this is a chance to break
off for half an hour or so, relax, contemplate, think your
thoughts, and sit in a friendly quiet.
Not a bad idea for a resolution for 2020, perhaps. . .
