SEAFORD NATURAL HISTORY SOCIETY All good wishes for 2020 from Seaford Natural History Society. Our indoor programme has been extra busy this year with a total of thirteen meetings, seven before Christmas, including our Christmas Social and an additional meeting on recording wildlife, and six in the New Year, including the AGM. So far this season we have had some fascinating talks with topics ranging from hedgehogs and small mammals to coral reefs in Indonesia and birds in Papua New Guinea, and nearer to home the rich diversity of Eastbourne and Pevensey Levels – look out for a walk in this area in this year’s programme. Our 2020 talks start on 7th January when Rachel Atkinson will be talking about Nature and Child Development. – a new topic for us. And on 21st January, Anna Bunny of ORCA’s topic is Looking for Whales and Dolphins. (This talk was recommended by one of our members who saw it on the ferry from Dieppe to Newhaven!) If the wind and rain continue there is a strong temptation to stay indoors and plan outings for later in the year. But it’s still worth exploring local woodlands which offer shelter from the wind if not always respite from the mud. Walking amongst bare trees can be magical! We’ve previously written about ash and beech trees. This time the focus is on sycamores (Acer pseudoplatanus). Sycamores hail from central, southern and eastern Europe and opinions differ on when they arrived in Britain. They may have been introduced by the Romans or possibly much later, in Tudor times, and were first found naturalised here in the 1800s. Now, they are a well-established part of our woodland scene as well as common in parks, gardens and roadside verges. They are broad-leaved deciduous trees which can grow up to 35 metres tall and live for up to 400 years. The bark is a dark pinky grey, the twigs pinky brown and hairless, and the flowers are small, green-yellow and hang in spikes, or racemes. The five-lobed leaves are easy to identify but perhaps the most distinctive parts of the sycamore are their winged fruits known as samaras or spinners – these are extremely fertile and will establish saplings almost anywhere. Some argue they are too successful because they take the place of native trees whilst others suggest that we should appreciate their fertility because they will fill some of the gaps left by ash and elm hit by Ash Dieback or Dutch elm disease. Sycamores often get a bad press because they are a source of the ‘leaves on the line’ which delay our trains in the autumn but, like all trees, they provide a valuable habitat for many creatures. They are attractive to aphids and the ladybirds, hoverflies and birds which feed on them. The leaves are eaten by the caterpillars of a number of moths, including the sycamore moth, plumed prominent and maple prominent moths. The flowers provide a good source of pollen and nectar for bees and other insects, and the seeds are eaten by birds and small mammals. They are also an invaluable carbon sink.
