The last Wednesday in November saw a stalwart band of die-hards braving the latest sou’-wester to come gusting up the Channel, bringing with it just what our garden at the Crouch has been crying out for (not) – rain! Our numerous water butts are over-flowing, and Stan described our water gauge as ‘swimming’.‘It’s gained 1.9inches in a week,’ he reported as we sheltered from the tempest in the cosy classroom, ‘and that’s the same as the previous week.’ Dave, who has lived in Seaford for 35 years, said he’d never known an autumn like it. At least the ground is draining after each deluge and is being dried out by the wind. As this is being written, a return to colder, drier weather was being forecast. Bring on kinder gardening weather in 2020 we say. So far the garden has escaped relatively unscathed but we are sad to report that the biggest storm brought down the mosaic mural attached to the outside of the classroom, depicting the hands of some of those who were in on the venture from the beginning, including Mike’s. Fear not, though, the many pieces have been collected and will be painstakingly jigsawed together to recreate the image. Something to do on a truly vile day perhaps. Watch this space… Allison reported that the Greenhavens Network was planning more tree planting and was asking for help from volunteers. And in our own children’s area Charlie Bears Nursery tots have been busy planting primroses. But back to the day in question, and before the dash for shelter and a hot tea or coffee to warm up soaking wet fingers, volunteers were busy pruning wayward branches, chopping up the results for compost and generally getting on with all the jobs listed on the whiteboard. So you can be assured that the garden will be looking at its winter best when it reopens after the Christmas break on Wednesday 8th January. Until then, have a wonderful gardening New Year, one and all!
