is not necessarily a positive word
in the common Chinese lexicon—
and this tends to ring true the
‘Rat’
world over. Even though it may
not have a necessarily positive connotation
or definition in and of itself, we’d all do well to
remember that nothing is defined 100%, and
words often don’t paint a full picture of the
truth. In 2020— we celebrate a kinder view of
the rat, honouring their cleverness, ability to
think on their feet, and their natural creativity.
Just like the rat chilling out on the cover of this
edition, they always find ways to get people
around them to help with the heavier lifting,
and ultimately win the race! (read all about
what makes rats special on page 27). We, here
at REDSTAR, all hope that 2020 is full of love,
happiness and great surprises for everyone.

MEET THE LOCALS
By Annie Clover
Best memory
since coming
to Hangzhou?
My best memory in China
was when I graduated
from my master’s degree at
Zhejiang University. I think
that moment represented
going to another level in my
China experience, I quickly
engaged with the various
communities and found
a job that resonates with
everything I studied for years.
What
are your
thoughts
on the city?
I strongly recommend
Hangzhou to everyone, it’s
a beautiful city and it has a
great business ecosystem
where most people are
willing to cooperate and
help each other grow.
Are there
any areas in
Hangzhou
you find
breathtaking?
I find the hot springs are an
interesting place for relaxing.
When you’re sitting in the pool,
the heat deeply penetrates your
muscles and relaxes them, and
this helps you naturally release
physical tension. The hot springs
I usually go to are located in
Xianghu. It’s very convenient to
go as you can take metro line
one to Xianghu Station then
take a taxi for about eight to
ten minutes to the hot springs.
Your
thoughts
on the
city as a
whole?
I actually think Hangzhou is really
an amazing place, and I have stayed
here for more than five years. It's
a place where I learned lots about
Chinese culture and customs. There
are many interesting places to have
a good time like West Lake, the tea
fields, Qinghe street for buying
traditional food and clothes.
There are also good bars and
clubs with great music to dance
to. I would definitely recommend
people to come visit Hangzhou.
Does
Hangzhou
have
anywhere
to let loose?
I enjoy the variety of places
in this city. From the famous
West Lake to the tea fields
and pagodas, there are a ton
of great places in Hangzhou.
And of course there are the
places to go and enjoy time
with friends, like Socia10
Vineyard for instance.
What would
you say to
someone
contemplating
coming to
Hangzhou?
I would recommend coming
to Hangzhou as you can
get all the benefits of
being in a big modern city,
and the technology and
entrepreneurship ecosystem
here is great. It’s also very
close to Shanghai, and from
there you can get anywhere
in the world very quickly.

A PLACE TO SPEND
THE WHOLE NIGHT
EATA - A BAR THAT DOES FOOD
BETTER THAN MOST RESTAURANTS
By A. Michelle
When Marco Polo described
Hangzhou as “Heaven on Earth,”
he didn’t know how right he was.
But if Hangzhou is heaven, then
EATA is the place where the angels go to
eat. My meal was truly one of the most
spectacular I have eaten in Hangzhou,
and probably one of the best I have
encountered throughout my travels in Asia.
The atmosphere of the establishment is as
unique as what I would encounter soon
enough on my plate and in my glass. It’s
not a restaurant in the traditional sense;
the seating layout, the music volume
and the ever-present position of the bar
suggests a high-end cocktail lounge rather
than an eatery. But when the food began
to roll out, there was no doubt that the
kitchen staff weren’t messing around; they
knew their craft through and through.
General Manager, Alex Lang, greeted me,
and after I remarked at the interesting
style of this venue, he explained that “there
are a lot of places that can do gourmet
food, and lots of places have well-crafted
cocktails, but there are few places around
that excel at both.” So, he and his partners
decided they would create a “one-stop
shop” to offer the best of both worlds... a
venue where you can bring a date then sit,
relax, not feel the need to rush, and not
have to leave to continue the evening.

广 告 • 生 活 方 式 // LIFESTYLE /
The meal began, simply enough, with
fresh, briny oysters. Alex let me know that
the restaurant has a great daily special
– 6 oysters and one glass of bubbly for
only 99 RMB! (limited to one order per
table). It was soon followed by creamy,
savoury, smoked salmon served with fresh
honeycomb and herb remoulade. This
outstanding dish is accompanied by bread
fresh-from-the-oven, which is slightly
crunchy on the outside but soft and fluffy
on the inside. Upon Alex’s suggestion, I
opened the bread pocket, filled it with a bit
of each sauce, then wrapped a generous
slice of the salmon around the whole small

but EATA may have made a convert of me.
package. The result was a sublime mixture
of savoury, salty and sweet flavours in
one unbelievably crispy bite. Since my
first visit, I’ve returned to the restaurant
three more times just to taste this again.
When Alex suggested I try the venison
stew followed by the spicy mussels,
I hesitated. I’m always up for trying
something new, but gamey proteins are
not usually my favourite. However, only
because I was so impressed by everything
I’d already tried - I was willing to heed
his advice and give this a try. My bravery
was certainly rewarded. Wow! The stew
was served with toasted French bread,
a perfect conveyor for the lean, juicy,
flavourful meat and vegetables. The
mussels were probably the most pleasant
surprise of the night for me: plump,
tender, and superlatively spicy. While my
taste buds were still pleasantly tingling
from the mussels, I was presented with
a brown paper bag that was sizzling and
popping! Inside was a delicacy I’ve only
seen in the Deep South of the USA or the
streets of Central and South America –
pork cracklings! The pork skin melted in
my mouth and helped cleanse the palate
for the desserts that were soon to come.
Now, here comes a moment
of truth… I am not (don’t gasp
aloud if you’re in public) a fan of
dessert. I prefer to focus on the
savoury courses and leave the
sweets to my accomplices, but
EATA may have made a convert
of me. First up, an outstanding
red velvet cake with creamy
frosting and a dab of passion
fruit coulis. Next, la piece de
résistance - what appeared to be
a simple lemon on a plate burst
open with the tap of a spoon to
reveal a creamy, icy fluff, filled
with a tart lemon filling. This citrus delight
was the perfect complement to the spicy,
savoury meal - the ultimate palate cleanser.
The cocktails were as outstanding as
everything else I had encountered
throughout the evening. Although I
asked for something “not sweet,” the
bartender (luckily) decided to offer me
one of his specialties that veered in that
direction. Served in an adorable panda
bear cup, the primary spirit was a local
specialty of Osmanthus wine. I respected
the initiative to share a local Hangzhou
specialty – it was much appreciated!
To conclude, I think EATA’s standout quality
is the absolute, unyielding attention to
detail: from the fresh honeycomb over
the salmon, to the herbs being grown in
the open kitchen that are used in dishes
and drinks, Alex and his team have set
a new bar for eateries in Hangzhou and
a standard for bars that I believe will be
very hard to match under a single roof.

CAFÉ SANGU:
A HEAVEN FOR
WINE LOVERS
REASONABLE PRICES,
INCREDIBLE SELECTION,
DELECTABLE FLAVOURS
By Jared Thompson
“I’ll take another bottle please, this time to go!” That’s right this little café isn’t just serving
wine up by the bottle it’s selling them at a price good enough to take one home with you.
“The concept for our restaurant” the owner, Shelley, told me, “was to provide a relaxing
place with great food and coffee with directly sourced wine imports. This way you can grab
a bottle to try while relaxing with your friends and take a few more bottles home with
you for the same price as you would pay if you were just buying the bottle at a wine store.”
From the extensive selection of
European wines from France, Italy,
and Spain to South America and
Australia, there is certainly a bottle
that will suit your fancy regardless if you are
partial to red or white. After hearing about
this interesting business model, REDSTAR
decided to bring along a few rather picky
wine drinkers to see what they thought of
the place. Rather than peruse the menu
we gave Shelley free rein to suggest
what bottles we should try; suffice to say,
we weren’t disappointed. We sampled
crisp dry chardonnays, light rosés, fullbodied
merlots, and bold earthy shirazes.
I loved each one so much that I needed
to grab a bottle of each to take away.
Café Sangu has solved one of my personal
pet peeves that I am known to whine about
when it comes to buying wine: if I am going
to be spending over 150 RMB a bottle I
don’t want to be playing Russian roulette
with the flavour. Nope, for 200+ RMB I want
to know exactly what bottle I am getting
myself into. At this wine haven, you just
bring along a few friends, split on 2 or 3
bottles of different flavours and then when
you discover the one that suits your palate
best you can take that one home, knowing
that when you pop the cork later it will be
exactly what you wanted. This way you can
get to know the wine first for a lower cost
before you commit to the full bottle—kind
of like window shopping but a lot more fun.
Café Sangu doesn’t just quench your thirst
for great wine, it satiates your craving for
quality food as well. The dinner spread that
our merry bunch of winos was presented
with was just as impressive as the bottles
we chased it down with. We started off with
a plentiful selection of warm breads, freshly
baked that day. The one that caught my
eye first had a strong hue of green colour
all marbled through it. I was absolutely
elated when I realised that the colour was
due to the fresh pistachio that was baked
through it. This restaurant isn’t only a place
where you can carry home a bottle of wine
it’s a bakery too. They have freshly baked
soft baguettes, melt-in-your-mouth buns,
12 redstarhangzhou.com
and loaf upon loaf of firm and crusty sliced
breads that are as tasty as they are true to
their French recipes. You won’t find any of
that overly sweet, dessert style bread that is
all-too-typical around China in this bakery;
the only thing sweet in this restaurant are
the superbly crafted cakes and desserts.
After we had polished off the first bottle
and cleared the yummy bread, some
splendid hors d’oeuvres arrived. These
included little pieces of buttered bread
with prosciutto, arugula and cheese - light
on the palate with a slightly salty finish.
A plate of top-quality meat and cheese
selections with cured salami, ham, smoked
salmon, Cheddar and Brie went delightfully
well with the ice-cold white wine we were
working our way through. These appetising
appetisers were served alongside a fresh
garden salad topped in a creamy vinaigrette
dressing with a tangy sweetness to it.
For the entrees, we started off with juicy
and tender burgers cooked perfectly to
a barely pink medium rare and served on
black squid ink buns with fries. The burgers
were so big that rather than ordering
one each, we ordered two and had them
cut into fours so we could all try them.
We also had a
wonderful spaghetti
bolognaise in which
the sauce was clearly prepped
from scratch with light and sweet
tomatoes easily coming through
the garlic and meaty flavours of
the other ingredients. To tie the
whole night off we had some
decadently fashioned tarts,
brownies and mango meringue
desserts that went perfectly with the
last bottle of shiraz we were sipping.
All in all, the experience I had at Café
Sangu that night was nothing short of
impressive, but after about 5 bottles of
wine between us the rest of the night was
somewhat a blur. Even though I might
have had a bit more wine than I planned
to, waking up the next day and discovering
the five bottles of the wine I now had in my
home was a pleasant surprise that lasted
right through the month. Now, it’s about
time to go back and get some more!

CURTAINS UP FOR
A MIDSUMMER
NIGHT’S DREAM
By Jared Thompson
Photos by Wang Shengming ( 王 盛 铭 ) and Brine Taz
After the Hangzhou Repertory
Theatre Troupe’s hit debut production
of Midsummer Night’s Dream at the
end of November, REDSTAR sat down
with the director, Kristyna Zaharek,
and assistant director, Paul Davis, to
ask them a bit about the show and
theatre in general.
REDSTAR - WHY DID YOU
DECIDE TO ADAPT THE PLAY?
Kristyna- Hangzhou is a very international
city, and I wanted to involve as many
people from as many different cultures as
I could! Jacobean and Elizabethan English
are difficult to memorise and understand,
even for native speakers. In order to make
the play more open for this international
audience, I decided to adapt the play into a
modern version of English. But Shakespeare
does have a way with language. He puts
specific words in specific places with
specific meanings. Sometimes his words
can mean three or four things at a time
as well. Adapting it so that the original
meanings are preserved, and the beauty of
the wordplay isn’t lost was the most difficult
part for sure. That’s also why I decided to
14 redstarhangzhou.com
广 告 • 特 辑 // FEATURES /
keep some of the fairies’ speech, Puck’s
speeches, and the Mechanicals’ play in
the fifth act, all in the original wording.
RS- WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU
GIVE TO PEOPLE LOOKING TO GET
MORE INVOLVED IN THEATRE?
Kristyna- For those who want to be on
stage—there are no small roles. If you get
cast, even as a dancer in the background,
you have an important character to play.
Don’t shy away from being in the chorus!
For those who want to get involved—
start whereever you can. If you want
to act, but didn’t get cast, find ways to
get involved in helping the show from
behind the scenes. Putting on a theatrical
show isn’t just about the actors. It’s
about the set, the props, the lights, the
costumes, the marketing and a million
other things. Everyone who contributes to
the production has an important role to
play. Shoot me a message and I’ll get you
connected to the theatre community.
RS- WHAT ARE THE MOST
IMPORTANT THINGS A
DIRECTOR NEEDS TO DO?
Kristyna- The first is to praise his or her
cast. And I’m not talking about praising
for big decisions they make or nailing that
monologue. Even the small things need
praise! Actors are driven by approval of
their decisions, and everything they do on
stage is an active choice. Notice the little
things. Shower your actors in praise as a
gardener would water the flowers. Also,
be flexible. Sometimes you may have an
actor who isn’t really going the direction
you have in mind. You can try to help them
get there, but at a certain point, you need
to find what they’re doing that’s good and
focus on that. You put the actor in that role
for a reason. Help them get part of the way,
then focus on what they’re doing right
and encourage them the rest of the way.
RS- WHAT ADVICE WOULD
YOU GIVE TO PEOPLE LOOKING
TO TRY TO START A CREATIVE
GROUP LIKE THIS?
Kristyna- Be ready for anything. If
something can go wrong, it probably will.
Find people who are like-minded and
talk about your strengths together. Even
talk about your weaknesses. How can
you encourage each other? What roles
can you take? Starting a creative group is
like a relationship. There are other people
involved who want it to work just as
much as you do. Have open and honest
communication--and do it often. I’ve
learned this the hard way, in all respects.
RS- PAUL, AFTER ALL YOUR
EXTENSIVE EXPERIENCE IN
THEATRE, WHAT ROLE WOULD
YOU SAY THEATRE STILL
PLAYS IN THE DIGITAL AGE?
Paul- What role does theatre play in this age
of technological bombardment is indeed
the question. The number one complaint
as far as I have seen in this age of digital
detachment is a lack of actual emotions. We
used to tell each other stories. Now we see
a heartwarming post and get our dopamine
hit from a reply, only to shortly after need
one more, and then another to satisfy that
void. Theatre is a bridge over that void. It
doesn’t fill it, because the seeking is what
makes us inherently human. It is a way,
hand in hand, heart connected to heart, that
we can frame our universe in real time, high
definition, and live, with real engagement
and raw emotional connection. If anything,
theatre’s role has grown in this age, as a
place to reconnect with that human need to
share a tale, not for ‘likes’ on a smartphone,
but to NOT feel detached from the world.
Entertainment? Distraction? We have way
more of that than anyone can ever handle.
The connection to the rest of humanity was
built around the campfire through telling
stories! That is the role of theatre. To be
in a room full of people sharing the same
experience and walk away with more than
you came in with. To show us what dreams
may come when we have indeed shuffled
off this mortal coil, to not distract from the
mystery of life… it is, quite simply, to be.
If you are interested in getting involved
in theatre in Hangzhou, the Hangzhou
Repertory Theatre Troupe is just getting
started. Just add Kristyna (Wechat
ID: Chremotic1) and she can put you
in the group where you can find out
about all the Screaming Lemur improv
nights, acting workshops, play readings,
and how to get involved in the next
big show they will be producing.

SUPER BOWL 54,
WHAT IS IT?
WHY SHOULD
YOU WATCH IT?
By Nick
At the time of writing this, the history
of the 2019 American football
season has yet to be written, so
I’ll be focusing more on what the
Super Bowl is and why you should be
watching it. At the end of 17 weeks in the
regular season, there are 12 of 32 teams
that get to have a chance at making it to
the BIG game. Throughout the month of
January, these games will be played until
the final two teams get to compete for
the ultimate title of World Champions.
The game goes down on the first Sunday
of February, the 2nd (but it’ll be on live
the morning of the 3rd here in Hangzhou,
which is a Monday for us). But why should
you care? Let me give you four reasons.
1
IT’S THE FINAL GAME BETWEEN
THE TWO BEST TEAMS
If you’ve never seen an American football
game, this is the perfect opportunity to see
what it’s about. You get to witness the two
best teams of the 2019 season on the field
and so, for the most part (not including last
year’s defensive and low scoring game)
there will be a lot of action and points
scored. It’s a chance to figure out what this
sport is all about and why Americans love
it so much. But if you’re not interested in
adding another sport to your fandom or
even not interested in sports then . . .
2
THE SUPER BOWL
COMMERCIALS ALONE ARE
NORMALLY WORTH IT
From Doritos commercials that are so
hilarious they make you shoot orange
juice out of your nose (painful)
to Budweiser plucking at
your heart strings with
a salute to Dwayne
Wade, these
commercials
are always
surprising and
fun to watch.
But let’s say this isn’t
up your alley, in
that case . . .
3
THE HALFTIME SHOW
WITH JENNIFER LOPEZ
AND SHAKIRA
Since it’s being hosted in Miami, the NFL
decided to reach out to two of the biggest
Latina stars to lead the Halftime Show at
the Super Bowl, Jennifer Lopez and Shakira.
If you don’t regularly listen to Latin music,
believe me when I say, you should! And
there is no better place to encounter this
upbeat style of music than during Super
Bowl! these ladies are some of the biggest
names in the industry. Nevertheless,
if music, commercials, and watching
competitive sports aren’t your thing . . .
4
GETTING OUT WITH
FRIENDS AND ASKING FOR
A MONDAY MORNING OFF
The Super Bowl will be at 7:30 in the
morning on Monday the 3rd. So why
not take the morning off, grab a couple
of friends and watch the game. Simply
because this article needs to be at the
presses before I can get any insight as to
which bars will be showing the game, I
can only give you a couple of suggestions.
Either stream the Super Bowl live on
Tencent (or NFL GamePass if you have
it) and have your buddies over for some
breakfast foods—I’m personally looking
forward to breakfast burritos and OJ—
or find one of the many sports bars
around town that will be showing
the game (College Bar and Wade’s
will most likely be showing it) and
see what kind of breakfast deals
they’ve got for the event. Grab
your friends and get out there! After
American football, like all sports,
is just another excuse to spend
more time with your mates!

WHAT’S IN A NAME?
(WHY THE H**L DO THEY
CALL IT FOOTBALL!)
By Jared Thompson
We can’t encourage our non-US
readers to take up watching,
or trying their hand at playing
American football, without
surely drawing scoffs that the sport
is called ‘football’ at all! For a start, it’s
played almost entirely with hands and
not feet, and the ‘ball’ is in fact…oval.
Footwork makes up such an incredibly
small portion of the Yanks game that it is
done by one player per team called the
‘designated’ kicker. The other game, known
as football the world over, was invented in
England between 200 and 660 CE, and the
fact that the USA and Canada instead call
this aged sport ‘soccer’, has started about
as many heated arguments as there are
tackles in American football (and nearly as
many fake falls and feigned injuries as you
can see in the FIFA World Cup). So if this is
such a hotly contested topic, when did the
argument begin? well, as fate would have it,
the Brits themselves seem to be to blame.
American football is a clear derivation of
another sport of British origin, namely
rugby. But about 200 years ago rugby
wasn’t just rugby, it was called ‘rugby
football.’ This was because rugby was itself a
derivation of the original and ancient sport
of football, which at that time was official
termed ‘association football’ to distinguish
it from the sports that stemmed from it. The
confusion over the naming of two entirely
different sports arose in England where
(and I brace for flying beer glasses as I say
this), the Brits actually invented the name
Soccer for the sport of Association Football,
themselves. Around that time, rugby was
colloquially called ‘Rugger’ by those who
followed it. It was at around the same
time that ‘association football’ was also
affectionately called ‘Soccer’ in, yes, England
before anywhere else. The term ‘soccer’ got
carried over to America and applied to the
same sport that is now called football most
everywhere else. Alas, the sport that had
evolved from traditional rugby, kept the
name ‘football,’ the shared name of all the
sports in this long lineage to distinguish it
from the more formalised rugby that was
also played there. It was only in the 1980s
that the name soccer seemed to have too
strong of an American sound to it, and it
became largely rejected by the people who
only 100 years before coined the phrase.
In case you come looking to argue about
this feel free to search the 18 paper by a
professor of Kinesiology, Stefan Szymanski,
called “It’s Football not Soccer” and read
the argument for yourself. Whatever
you call it we can agree both footballs
are a great excuse to pound the bar
and shout about something on TV.
Rugby was itself a
derivation of the original and
ancient sport of football.

From New Year’s Resolutions and
achieving the perfect summer
body, to running marathons and
competing in triathlon races,
everyone who participates in a workout
program has a variety of reasons for
beginning this journey. Starting a fitness
routine is easy at first especially around the
New Year’s holiday. Gym memberships are
often sold at a discounted price and Taobao
makes it easy to purchase workout clothes
and gear. However, staying motivated
seems to be a common challenge and
the reason many people discontinue their
programs. To assist you with maintaining
your fitness resolutions, long-term, personal
trainer Latif Saber of LATIF FITNESS shared
with REDSTAR everything you should know
about starting and maintaining a fitness
regimen, and how to attain better results.

广 告 • 文 化 // CULTURE /
BEFORE BEGINNING A WORKOUT
PROGRAM, UNDERSTAND YOUR
CURRENT BODY SITUATION
According to Latif, “most people train
without knowing the capabilities of their
body.” For example, if you have a bad
shoulder, you are unable to train your upper
body, such as your back, chest, biceps,
triceps and shoulder at one hundred per
cent capability. To train your lower body, it
is important to have strong glutes, knees,
and be able to rotate your ankles. It is
hard to enjoy running, climbing stairs, or
lifting weights if your knees aren’t strong.
If you need help reading your current
body situation, ask an athletic trainer
(with at least 1-3 years of experience) or
a physical therapist to assist you during a
free trial class at a gym. They can conduct
strength, mobility, flexibility, speed,
and lung tests to assess your body.
DON’T HAVE A LONG-TERM GOAL
ALTHOUGH THIS ADVICE SEEMS
counterintuitive, Latif has a solid argument
regarding why he doesn’t recommend
anyone new to fitness or experienced
gym rats to have a long-term goal. “You
will never catch up if I give you a plan
for 2-3 months,” says Latif. Instead, the
solution he recommends is developing a
short-term, non-stop fitness regimen for
three days, several weeks, or one month.
Latif remarks, “If you can maintain at
least a three-day workout schedule the
first week, your body will get used to the
movements and your schedule will develop
into a consistent routine.” Especially for
beginners, the first week’s exercise plan
should be very short, unique, and light.
INCORPORATE YOUR FITNESS
INTERESTS INTO YOUR DAILY
ROUTINE AND “MAMA LAI” ( 妈 妈 来 )
Your daily workout routine should
redstarhangzhou.com 19
/ CULTURE // 广 告 • 文 化
incorporate fitness activities that you enjoy.
Depending on your level and fitness goals,
you can work out for 5-10 minutes nonstop
before resting for 15-20 minutes. Latif
suggests starting small and increasing
workout time increments gradually. “The
best advice I can give is “mama lai” ( 妈 妈 来 )
which is a Chinese saying for ‘take it slow.’
If you overdo it, you will push yourself to
failure and your body will feel exhausted.”
As a trainer, he often doesn’t introduce a full
workout routine to his students until their
second or third day of training – which gives
their bodies time to adjust to the regimen.
ENSURE TO WARM-UP AND
COOL DOWN BEFORE AND
AFTER YOUR WORKOUT
Before jumping on the elliptical machine
or setting off on a running trail, do a brief
warm-up. Adding a warm-up, cool-down,
and stretches to your workout routine can
prevent and reduce the risk of injuries.
“Make sure your body is warm before
starting your exercise,” says Latif. “During
the first 5 minutes of your routine, you can
incorporate a dynamic warm-up which a
set of chosen exercise movements done at
a low, slow pace that gradually increases
in speed and intensity.” You may sweat
mildly during a warm-up, but you generally
won’t feel fatigued. Walking briskly for 5
or more minutes is an excellent warm-up
and cool down activity for runners. When
your muscles feel warm after the warm-up
and cool down phases of your workout, it is
highly recommended to conduct stretching
exercises. Stretching improves flexibility, the
joint’s range of motion, and performance
in certain activities. All you need is 5
minutes to do a quick, full body stretch.
One day before your workout, it’s important
to eat a well-balanced diet, drink plenty
of water, and get a good night’s sleep
You can’t complete a workout if you don’t
have enough energy. By resting well,
following a healthy diet, and drinking
plenty of water the day before, your
workout will help you achieve your goals.
If you are seeking to gain weight, eat more
foods that are high in carbohydrates.
Those seeking to lose weight should
eat more protein-rich foods. It is also
recommended to drink at least 3 litres
of water per day. To track caloric intake,
Latif recommends using MyFitnessPal,
a free app that can be downloaded
from the Android or iOS App store.

LATIF’S 11 THINGS TO DO
BEFORE AND AFTER A
WORKOUT TO ACHIEVE
BETTER RESULTS
Before your workout
1. Prioritise getting quality sleep the
night before training.
2. One day before working out, eat a
good amount of high quality and
healthy food.
3. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!
4. Grab a snack 30 minutes prior to
training.
5. Make sure you are wearing
comfortable, loose-fitting clothes
and footwear for your workout.
6. Work in a dynamic warm-up.
After your workout
7. Stretch your muscles.
8. Use a foam roller.
9. Refuel with post-workout
nutrition.
10. Log your workout in your fitness
journal.
11. Take a cool shower, especially if
you worked out in the heat.

THE CHINESE ZODIAC
PART ONE:
THE GREAT RACE
By Jerry
Here’s an interesting scenario. You’ve just started a new job and your Chinese coworkers ask you what
animal you are. Perplexed, you respond, “Human? Aren’t we all?” Technically, you would be right, but you
misunderstood the question. What they are trying to ask you is which Chinese zodiac animal you are.
The Chinese zodiac or shēng xiào
( 生 肖 ) is a classification system
developed in the Han dynasty (202
BC – 202 AD) and is similar to the
Western zodiac astrological horoscope.
While the astrological zodiac assigns each
person a sign according to when in the
year they were born, the Chinese zodiac
assigns each person an animal according
to their birth year based on the Chinese
lunar calendar. The Western zodiac uses
twelve signs and the Chinese zodiac
coincidentally uses twelve animals which
repeat every twelve years. According to
legend, the order these animals were
redstarhangzhou.com 21
/ CULTURE // 广 告 • 文 化
assigned was determined in ancient times
by a “Great Race” between the animals.
Once upon a time, the Jade Emperor
wanted to name the years on the calendar
and decreed a “Great Race” would be held.
The first twelve animals that arrived to
meet him would be the animals that were
celebrated in the calendar. The race was
tough. There were many obstacles, and
the animals had to cross a strong river.
The cat and the rat were both intelligent
animals but could not swim. They asked the
ox for help getting across the river to which
the kind-hearted and naïve ox agreed.
The rat and the cat both hopped onto the
ox, thanking him for aiding them on their
journey. Once they got to the other shore,
the sly rat kicked the cat into the river and
hurried to the finish line (this might explain
why cats hate the water and hunt rats).
The rat was first, followed by the ox who
came second. Unfortunately, the cat never
made it to the finish line and therefore,
didn’t make it onto the Chinese zodiac.
Third came the tiger who, although fast,
was slowed by the current of the river. Then
hopping to fourth place came the rabbit
who nimbly jumped from one stone to the
next. The rabbit almost got stuck until it
found and jumped onto a floating log which
carried the rabbit ashore. Then, swooping
in over the river came the majestic dragon.
“Why wouldn’t a quick, airborne
creature come first place?” the Jade
Emperor asked the dragon.
The good-natured dragon explained
that he was held back because he had
to stop and help a village in need. Then
along the way, he blew a puff of wind for
the rabbit who was helplessly clinging
onto a floating log. The Jade Emperor
was touched by the dragon’s actions and
awarded it fifth place in “The Great Race”.
Suddenly, galloping sounds made its way
to the Jade Emperor. It was the horse!
With great strides, the horse ran to the
Jade Emperor but just when it was about
to cross the finish line, the snake slithered
by and startled the horse. The snake was
declared the sixth animal with the horse
coming in at a close seventh place.
Eighth, ninth, and tenth place belonged to
a team consisting of the goat, monkey and
the rooster. It was the rooster who found a
raft to get over the river while the goat and
the monkey worked together to row the raft

RAT ZODIAC CHARACTERISTICS
• Clever • Quick thinkers • Creative and industrious • Successful • Content with living a quiet life • Good at seizing opportunities
across. The Jade Emperor was impressed
with their creativity and teamwork and
named the goat, monkey and rooster,
eighth, ninth, and tenth place, respectively.
The dog, who was the best swimmer and
fastest runner, only managed to come in
eleventh place because he got distracted
and played around in the river. Then finally
came the pig. The pig got hungry in the
middle of the race and went looking
for food. After it had eaten it’s full, it got
tired and fell asleep. When it awoke, it
slowly made its way to the Jade Emperor
coming dead last in twelfth place.
The Great Race was over, and the order
of the Chinese zodiac was declared: Rat,
Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse,
Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig.
This year (2020) is a special year because
it marks the start of a new twelve-year
cycle with the Year of the Rat! Pick up next

you which zodiac animal you are. You can

each animal has, their compatibilities with
other animals, and how to stay lucky!
The order of the Chinese zodiac:

A BIT OF ADVICE FOR THE RATS
DURING THEIR SPECIAL YEAR OF
2020
2020 has arrived and it’s the Rat’s year, so
we thought it’d be good to give you a bit
of background on what the zodiac has
to say about the people born in 12-year
increments before now. Rats are traditionally
seen as symbols of wealth and surplus,
which makes sense seeing as they could
always be found in places where grain and
rice were stored eating their fill. Because
of their fast rate of reproduction, couples
who wanted to be blessed with children
used to pray to them. All Chinese animals
have a certain two-hour designation in
the terms of yin and yang ( 阴 阳 yīn yáng),
the rat is fully yang and represents the
beginning of a new day and is associated
with the midnight hours (23:00-01:00).
People born under this sign are seen to be
optimistic and energetic. The rats tend to be
liked by everyone they meet. With an active
nature, rats enjoy a flexible social circle.
They are interested in attending different
kinds of social occasions. They are sensitive
to other’s emotions but can be stubborn
and resolute in their own opinions. Because
of their independence and imagination,
they are suitable for creative careers. These
include authors, editors and artists. But in
2020, they may find themselves being more
temperamental than usual since it can be a
tumultuous year for people born under this
animal sign. They should also be careful to
take good care of their health and stay on
the lookout for people offering investment
opportunities or get rich schemes because
the auspices of 2020 can draw bad
luck out along with the good.

WHAT HAVE YOU
RESOLVED TO
DO THIS YEAR?
(PART 1)
By Nick
It’s THAT time of year again. Things are
fresh, exciting, looking up, it’s officially
2020 and YOU are getting ready to
make changes, right? Well, according
to INC.com of the 2,000 surveyed the
top 10 resolutions of 2019 were:
1. Diet or eat healthier (71%)
2. Exercise more (65%)
3. Lose weight (54%)
4. Save more and spend less (32%)
5. Learn a new skill or hobby (26%)
6. Quit smoking (21%)
7. Read more (17%)
8. Find another job (16%)
9. Drink less alcohol (15%)
28 redstarhangzhou.com
广 告 • 特 辑 // FEATURES /
And according to Time Magazine, many of these resolutions make the list of the
most broken resolutions each year as well. I’d venture a guess that many, if not
all, will be chosen and broken again in 2020! And let’s be honest here, you’ve
seen it or been a part of it; people will get a subscription to a gym, take up a new
diet program or cookbook, spend money on things to help them learn a new language,
books, or toss out their alcohol and cigarettes only to give up after four to six weeks.
Why do we tend to just give up after just a few weeks? Simple. We aren’t after change;
we want instant gratification. We create a BIG goal (mine is losing 30-40 kgs), but when
we look at how a few weeks pass and nothing has changed, we just give up. Well, I’m
here to give you some pointers I found to keep you going more than just a month or
two into the new year!
WRITE YOUR GOALS DOWN
Seems easy enough, but having it written
down gives you something tangible to
look at. Don’t just write it down; put it
somewhere you’ll see it every day as a
reminder of what you are committing
to. Put it on your bathroom mirror, on
the ceiling above your bed, on the bag
you take to work, beside your computer
monitor at work—anywhere that you see
every single day. We NEED to keep our
goals in front of us, otherwise we won’t
make the effort needed to achieve them.
REVERSE ENGINEER YOUR GOALS
This one I stole from a guy I follow on social
media, Gary Vaynerchuk (@GaryVee). He
says that you should break your goals down
into tangible, measurable steps. Aiming to
drop 50 kgs? What are the steps necessary
to get there? Want to give up smoking?
What do you need to do to get to that
point? Trying to learn Chinese (or any other
language)? Break it down into sections
that can be easily reached and tracked.
DO THE SMALL THINGS
One of the most frustrating things we
like to do is say, “I’m going to . . . (you fill
in the blank) for an hour a day!” But what
happens is, on a day we don’t have an hour
to spare, we just DON’T do it, because we
can’t do it for an hour like we promised
ourselves, so why bother? I always tell
the students I work with, “don’t try to
study English for an hour a day, COMMIT
5 minutes to it.” The same thing could be
done in other goals. Whether it’s exercising,
eating healthier, studying something
new, cutting back the booze, or whatever,
just break it into smaller things. Do the
small things and stop beating yourself
up for not doing the bigger ones? We
didn’t start running when we were babies;
we had to take those tiny steps first.
PATIENCE
and the right habits to get out of it. The
same goes for all the other habits we
have picked up along the way. Just ask
yourself how long you have already been
working against the goals you want to
make next year, and that’ll let you know
that new routines aren’t picked up at the
stroke of midnight—they are earned.
Most of all, don’t beat yourself up if you
don’t see an immediate effect, and always
reward yourself when you do what you
set out to do. For me, my reward is if I
consistently eat well for 6 days, I’ll treat
myself to a tasty meal on the 7th day (a
cheat day, basically). Just don’t overdo the
reward! Remember, don’t sweat it if you
fail one day, two days or even a week into
the resolution, just pick yourself up and try
again. Keep going! I'll be checking in next
month again to see how we are all doing
with these new New Year's resolutions.
As a bigger guy, I can tell you, I’d seriously
love to be thinner and fit tomorrow. But
it took me years to get this way, and it’ll
take me a long while of good choices

GIFT
GIVING
IN CHINA
By Pepe
In China, gifts are given on
holidays, birthdays and at other
special events, and are intended
to show respect, gratitude,
friendship, love or hospitality.
While this may seem typical of gift
giving around the world, the etiquette
of gifting in China is a bit different from other
countries. You may have heard people say, “It is
the thought that counts”, well, here are some
things to keep in mind when picking your next
gift this festive season.
• HONGBAO
Hongbao (hóng bāo 红 包 ) or red envelopes with 100
RMB banknotes inside are popular especially during
the Chinese New Year time. Hongbaos of different
amounts are given to kids and adults alike.
People give hongbaos to wish good luck
and that the receiver be prosperous in
the coming year. Because of this,
the amount of money is better if it
coincides with a lucky number too.
The number 8 ( 八 bā) in Chinese
rhymes with the fā in 恭 喜 发 财
(gōngxǐ fācái) the common New
Year wish meaning “may you be
happy and prosperous.” Because of
this, many people give hongbaos
amounts with an 8 in them, like 800. If
you send the hongbao on Wechat then 8, 18, 28,
58, 68, 88, 168 and 188 are all good numbers to send.
• FRUIT
Giving fresh fruit
as a gift symbolises
life, a new beginning
and the wish for the
coming year to be
sweet. Here are some
interesting facts about fruit gifts:
Peaches are thought to increase longevity. Fruits from
the citrus family may be given to a newly wed bride
as a wish that the bride and groom share a happy
and full life together. Oranges are a wish for good
fortune. The name of the mandarin in Cantonese also
means gold, and it represents a wish for prosperity.
Melons and pomelos are symbolic of family unity.
Apples symbolise peace and are a popular gift
especially around Christmas when they are given
with small words or pictures carved into their skin.

广 告 • 特 辑 // FEATURES /
• TEA
Tea is by far the most popular
gift in China for many reasons. It
is deeply embedded in Chinese
culture, consumed all year round
and people appreciate it. Tea
comes in different sizes, prices
and styles of fancy packaging.
It is seen as a safe gift that
just about anyone will like.
• HATS, GLOVES, GINSENG,
FITNESS EQUIPMENT,
FOOT MASSAGERS, OR
MASSAGE CHAIRS AND
PILLOWS (GIFTS FOR
THE ELDERLY)
These gifts are things
that matter to health
or increase comfort.
They show that you
care about the person
receiving it, and these
gifts are appreciated
by seniors. Chinese
traditional health
supplements can also
be a good option.
• ALCOHOL/WINE
White spirits ( 白 酒 báijǐu) are traditional
Chinese alcoholic drinks and popular
white spirits like Maotai, Fen Jiu or Luzhou
Laojiao are good gifts to give. Alcohol
makes people happy and sharing a bottle
of spirits with friends is a
nice gesture. If you
give alcohol as a
gift it’s better to
bring two bottles,
as gifts are more
auspicious in pairs
in Chinese culture,
but you won’t
offend anyone by
only giving one.
• FANS
With over two thousand years of history,
the Chinese fan is not just something you
cool yourself with. Fans have been a part
of Chinese culture for an incredibly long
time, so it should not come as a surprise
that they are a popular gift too. The original
Chinese fan, the circular tuánshàn 团 扇 , is
said to have been modelled after the full
moon, and it signifies union and happiness.
WHAT NOT TO GIVE!
There are some gifts that you should
not give because they have cultural
connotations that can offend people.
Odd numbers: In Chinese culture,
good things come in pairs. Numbers 3,
4, 7 are not good as they sound like the
words for departed, death and angry,
respectively. When giving cash gifts,
avoid giving an amount that includes
a four such as 40 or 400 since the
pronunciation of four, "sì ( 四 )" , sounds
similar to the word death, "sǐ ( 死 )". Best
not to give any gift in sets of four as it
is the unluckiest number in Chinese
culture.
Clocks should be avoided, as the
word for clock in Chinese is associated
with death Clocks often symbolise
time running out or the end of a
relationship. In Chinese, the words that
mean "to give a clock", "sòng zhōng (
送 钟 )" , has the same pronunciation as
the phrase "sòng zhōng ( 送 终 )", which
means that the family of a deceased
person has completed all the tasks
related to burying their loved one.
Watches, however, are still ok to give
as gifts.
Pears should be avoided, as the word
for pear in Chinese sounds like the
Chinese word for divide or separate
(pear “lí ( 梨 )”, separate “fēnlí ( 分 离 )”).
Pears should not be given as gifts,
especially not to a lover.
Umbrellas signify the end of a
friendship, partnership or romance and
should not be given as a formal gift.
The word umbrella, "sǎn ( 伞 )" , sounds
like the word "sàn ( 散 )" , which means
to separate.
Green hats are not a good choice as
a gift specifically for men. These were
historically given to the husbands
of unfaithful wives as an insult like
cuckold horns in medieval England.
("to wear a green hat", or "dài lǜ mào zi
( 戴 绿 帽 子 )" means that a man's wife is
cheating on him)
Necklaces, neckties, combs or belts are
appropriate gifts between boyfriends
and girlfriends but are too personal
shouldn’t be given to normal friends or
acquaintances.
Black and white colors, particularly in
photos, are linked with funerals.
Towels are normally given out at
funerals, and they bring sad memories
about death.

TIPS AND RESOURCES TO HELP YOU FEEL
LESS STRESSED AND ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS
By Sabrina Valles
A rapidly beating heart, sweaty palms, a shortness of
breath, even a sudden outburst of tears all are signs
of anxiety or panic attacks. Perhaps, thoughts of being
incapable or “not good enough” are making you feel
nervous and depressed. You might wonder if you will
ever get a job in the career you want or if you can even
get through the day. If thoughts and feelings like these
make you feel anxious during the day and keep you up
at night, meditation and breathing practices could be
just the cure you are searching for.
HANGZHOU FAMILY
acknowledging the moments when
you feel connected to the people
and experiences you encounter.
Staying open to new things you
encounter and keeping a grateful
attitude helps you fight off feelings
of depression and insignificance.
Whether you are feeling
overwhelmed or depressed,
there are many different
methods to help you overcome
the stress holding you back so that
you can realise your dreams. First
off, speaking with friends and family,
reading daily affirmations, writing a
journal, are all great ways to try to
deal with a negative mindset, but I
personally found that meditation really
helped me manage my occasional
outbreaks of anxiety.
No matter how busy you are, it is easy
to incorporate 10 to 30 minutes of
daily or weekly meditation into your
schedule. There are many guided
meditations you can access online
or through apps that can assist you
in starting to build a meditation
routine. The app, Headspace, offers
lots of guided meditations for stress
and sleep problems and has a free
version that could be a great place to
start. Dr. Ronald Siegel, an assistant
professor of psychology who teaches
part-time at Harvard Medical School,
has a variety of free mindfulness
meditations on his website
(mindfulness-solution.com) that are
perfect for those who have anxiety.
Creating the right space before
meditating can be just as important
as the act of meditating itself. Find a
quiet, comfortable environment in your
home or even at a local park, then
take off your socks and shoes and
relax your entire body. Some people
prefer to be seated cross-legged with
a straight back; Personally, I prefer to
lie down on my bed. After turning on
a guided meditation, place your palms
open and face up at your sides. After
you gently close your eyes, take deep
breaths in and out from the bottom
of your stomach, and let the guided
meditation help you quiet the mind.
After the meditation is complete, it is
recommended to stay away from a
computer or technology for an hour.
You go for a walk-in nature or light
some candles or incense inside your
home. It’s important to allow yourself
to reflect on the meditation, and let
it settle deep in your mind. Once
you start to go about your day, try
to find a way to show gratitude by
Meditation isn’t always easy or
comfortable at first, but the key is to
keep practicing and get on a regular
routine. It is working for me and my
anxiety, and if you are battling with
panic attacks or really feeling down,
I strongly recommend giving it a try.
To help give you something to
meditate on think on some of
these classic Zen quotes about life,
meditation, and the nature of the mind.
Each morning,
we are born again.
what we do today
is what matters most.
-The Buddha
What great men seek in themselves
are what small minded people
try to get from others
-Confucius
As a bee gathering nectar does not
disturb the beauty and fragrance of
the flower, so do the wise among
us move through the world.
-Buddha
You should sit for 20 minutes
of meditation everyday—
Unless you are too busy—then
you should sit for an hour.
- An old Zen adage
When you realise nothing is lacking,
the whole world belongs to you.
- Lao Tzu
You never find happiness until
you stop looking for it.
- Zhuangzi
The Buddha was asked what
he gained from Meditation. He
answered, “Nothing, but I lost anger,
anxiety, depression, insecurity, and
the fear of old age and death.”

HEALTHY SIMPLE SNACKS
FOR A FRESH START TO 2020
"DIS-MOI CE QUE TU MANGES, JE TE DIRAI CE QUE TU ES"
- TELL ME WHAT YOU EAT, AND I WILL TELL YOU WHAT YOU ARE.
By Daniela Gutiérrez
Photos by Maddalena Depalo
When I moved to Hangzhou
from Colombia, one of the
first things that I noticed
about my new lifestyle was
the huge amount of food that I was
now consuming every day. Back home,
I was used to having six small meals
per day, three of which were simply
small snacks. Here in China, my eating
habits in this new land shifted and
condensed into fewer and fewer meals.
I started having just lunch and dinner,
but even though I was only eating
twice a day, both meals were much
bigger portions than the ones I had in
Columbia. I was eating less often, but
somehow eating a lot more overall.
Back when I first arrived, I was so
excited about meeting new people and
experiencing the different flavours and
styles of Chinese food that I completely
forgot about taking care of myself and
having a balanced diet. Inevitably, this
began to reflect not only in my weight,
but also in how full and sluggish I
was feeling after nearly every meal.
First off, adapting to these new tastes,
ingredients and spices of Chinese
cuisine was not an easy task for me
to overcome. So, I found myself going
out to eat at restaurants with friends
or easily ordering in takeout from my
phone. I didn’t even have a kitchen
in my dormitory when I first got here
either. So, when I did actually feel like
eating something that didn’t leave me
feeling heavy and overfull, the only
options that I could easily manage
were having some fruit or buying
hardboiled eggs at the supermarket.
After many attempts to try to strike
a balance between my social life and
having a wholesome relationship with
food once again, I finally decided I
would have to create a new routine
for myself. I knew that if I could get
my tummy to feel good again, then
I would have a better chance of
controlling how I thought, how I felt,
and how I acted. Ultimately, I knew I
would be better equipped to face the
challenges that China was throwing my
way, if what I was eating was working
with me instead of against me.
A friend of mine happened to be
thinking the same way as me, so we
partnered up and started looking for
other options—better options. Once we
discovered these snacks, I never looked
back, and I’m sure you won’t either.
Even if you feel that you don’t have
enough time to cook up a four course
meal, or you aren’t that concerned
about being the healthiest person
on earth, there are tonnes of options
that you can whip up in less than
15 minutes that will keep you—and
your wallet—full. Hope this helps
you to start 2020 in a fresh way!

Homemade Peanut Butter
Oh my goodness! this
one is SO EASY! Put a few
cups of roasted peanuts
(unsalted is better, of
course) in a blender, turn
it on high and watch as
the they disintegrate
into crumbs. After a
couple more minutes,
they will become a silkysmooth
peanut butter
paste. Spread it on some
toast and pack it for a
pre-workout snack.
Overnight Oats or
Chia Seed Pudding
Easy breezy! Instead of
cooking your oats with
liquid on the stove
or in the microwave,
before going to sleep
mix oats or chia seeds
with water or milk
(vegan milk works
too) and leave it in the
fridge overnight. In
the morning, just add
some extra toppings
for flavour, like banana
slices, dragon fruit,
nuts, or honey and
you are off to your day
with a fibre packed
burst of energy.
Banana Cookies
This one is very simple and
surprisingly healthy! Mash
bananas and oatmeal together
until you get a consistent batterlike
paste. Make little balls out
of the paste and put them on
an oven sheet and cook at
180°C for 15 minutes. You can
add whatever extra flavour you
want to them: chocolate chips,
vanilla extract or cinnamon.
Smoothie
All you need is some
frozen bananas, mango,
pitahaya or whatever
frozen fruit tickles your
fancy. Chop up the fruit
into pieces and put the
pieces into the blender
with some low-fat yogurt
or skimmed milk and
blend until it turns smooth.
There is no wrong way to
make a smoothie, you can
be as creative as you want!
Hummus
Get some Tahini, (a condiment
made from toasted, ground
sesame seeds), some chickpeas
(both ingredients you can find
easily on Taobao) and a lemon.
Add the Tahini and chickpeas to
a blender and squeeze the lemon
to add the sour juice to it. Add
some garlic, a tablespoon of oil
and a pinch of salt, and blend for
a short while until thick. THAT’S
IT! You can eat it with some
fresh nan bread, nacho chips,
or some healthy fresh veggies.

HANGZHOU FAMILY
SEVEN FABULOUS
WAYS TO TIE YOUR
SCARF THIS WINTER

Hangzhou’s cold, winter
days are finally here
and there is no better
way to keep warm
while looking stylish than
wearing one of winter’s most
essential accessories, the scarf.
Archaeological findings show
that Chinese soldiers during the
reign of Qin Shi Huangdi (245-
221 B.C.) were the first to wear
scarves. They used a piece of
material to cover their necks to
protect themselves from chilly
winds. Scarves then were utilised
as a status symbol to signify
military rank. High-ranking
officers who reported directly to
the emperor wore silk scarves
and low-ranking soldiers wore
cotton scarves. Today’s modern
scarf developed from the scarves
ancient Romans wore during
the treks to Gaul and Germany.
Globally, men and women wear
scarves made from a variety
of fabrics that display different
designs. The accessory’s
horizontal cut defines it and
gives individuals flexibility on
how they can wear it. Although
there are many ways one can
wear a scarf, these seven easy
ways will immediately enhance
your winter wardrobe.

both ends looking like a tail together
and one loop. Wrap it around your
neck, pull the two tail ends through
the loop, and adjust the ends.
2. THE BOW
Wrap the scarf around your neck and
make a loose knot. Then, tie the ends
of the scarf together in a big bow.
3. THE FRONT TIE

Place the scarf around your neck
and let it hang. Cross and tie the two
ends in the centre. Adjust the scarf
to make it look full in the front.
4. THE SHAWL
Open the scarf, wrap it around your
shoulders and neck, and adjust for
comfort. This style is perfect for long,
wide scarves with beautiful patterns.
5. ARABIC STYLE HEAD SCARF
Cover your head, neck, and shoulders
with a long, wide scarf. Tug it slightly
to loosen it and adjust for comfort.
6. THE ROLLED LOOP

one time to create a neck loop. Pull
each end of the scarf underneath
and through the neck loop.
