MEET THE LOCALS

By Annie Clover

Where do

you usually

hang out in

Hangzhou?

When I am hanging out with my

guys, we are obviously going to be at

Wade’s Grill and Bar on Wulin Rd. It’s

an awesome spot to grab a beer, listen

to the live music and meet foreigners

who are new to Hangzhou and others

who have been around for ages. Mojar

(Mojitos) is nice as well. They’ve got

tasty Mexican food in big portions and

with very reasonable prices. By the

end of the night, everyone will end up

at 9 Bar and party until the morning,

dancing along to old hip-hop beats.

What’s a

good place

to get a

meal?

If I had to choose a good

place to eat Chinese food, it

would probably be Grandma’s

House. The selection is great

and almost everything served

there is easy for foreigners

to enjoy. One more top pick

of mine is the Italian place,

Ristorante Mullinaccio,

right in the city centre in

the in 77 shopping mall.

Which bars

are your

favourites in

Hangzhou?

I rarely hang out at bars, but I

used to be at Socia10, House of

Cards, and sometimes Wade’s.

College has really nice food; I like

the pizza there. After midnight,

the scene at College is great.

What do

you like

to eat in

Hangzhou?

Socia10 used to have whole

roast chickens which I loved to

eat—they were my favourite

dish there. I used to prefer

Margherita pizzas, but now

I like Salami pizza, instead.

Where

do you

usually chill

around

Hangzhou?

I like to eat at western

restaurants because it feels

like home, in a weird way.

I like to relax with friends

around West Lake because it

is tranquil, and the scenery is

breath-taking. My friends and

I enjoy going out together

to the local beer bars around

the city. We spend a lot of

time at Aishang and I hang

out at Wade's a lot. The

food there is great, and the

people are even better.

What

would you

recommend to

people new to

Hangzhou?

I tell people to visit West

Lake as often as possible

and to visit Hefang Street to

get a good introduction to

Chinese culture. I also enjoy

going to see ‘Little Paris’ in

Linping and ‘Little Venice’ in

Hangzhou, it's interesting to

see these places recreated

here in China. I enjoy

Indian cuisine too, so I

often go to Chakde Indian

restaurant where they serve

authentic, delicious food.

“Sweet sunshine, soft breeze,

we are in and out, we are from

Yunnan.” For anyone wanting to

find out what Yunnan cuisine is all

about, look no further than In&Out

Lijiang Themed Restaurant.

Spring approaches, flowers are

already starting to bloom around

the city, love is in the air, and

even though it’s still a bit chilly,

you couldn’t ask for a better time to

discover Yunnan cuisine. The spicy, sour,

sweet flavours are punctuated by fresh

herbs, fermented sauces and pickles and

this collage of different tastes all come

together wonderfully on the palate.

IN&OUT

RESTAURANT

HANGZHOU’S HOME OF

YUNNAN CUISINE

By Kim Bui

Photos by Annie Clover

The cooking style at In&Out is a product of

a melding of the many cooking styles of the

neighbouring regions around Yunnan. Dai

cooking has similarities with the culinary

styles of not just Yunnan’s neighbour,

Sichuan, but northern Thailand, Naxi

and Bai. The influences and correlations

stretch all the way to Tibet with its

Zhongdian (Shangri-La) style. They are all

colourful, well-presented and delicious.

For starters, the beef rolls with mint leaves

(48 RMB) and blackened chicken salad with

lemon grass and coriander leaves, Jingbo

style (48 RMB) are great staple dishes that

you’d be hard-pressed to find elsewhere

on Hangzhou. The sautéed tofu with

leek flowers is not to be missed either.

We then moved on to the main course:

black goat mutton hot pot (178 RMB

/ 258 RMB) is a well-known dish from

Yunnan, and the flavour tells you why

right away. The lamb cooked in the hot

pot is tender, delicious and with a strong

mutton smell that isn’t too powerful to

be off-putting. It is worth noting that it

is high in nutritional value, has low fat

and cholesterol content, which makes it

a nice dish for autumn and winter. While

you are getting your fill of delicious food,

don’t forget to order some Yunnan beer

or rice wine to wash the heavy flavour of

the black goat off your palate so you can

properly taste the other dishes afterwards.

The spicy, dry, and cured yak meat done

in a Zhongdian style (68 RMB) or the

pork ribs with plum sauce Dali style (78

RMB) are a must-try if you are still feeling

hungry. Due to geographical location and

a vast cultural landscape, Yunnan cuisine

draws on Vietnamese and Thai cooking

traditions by incorporating fresh herbs

into the recipes. The Yunnan pineapple rice

(58 RMB) is a great example of that. It uses

glutinous rice, cooked with pineapple juice

and cubed pineapple, to create a tender

sweetness that is iconic in the Southeast

Asian nations near the Yunnan region.

Make sure you order rubing cheese

when you are at the restaurant. It’s

a traditional goat cheese that is firm

and is found only in Yunnan province.

Rubing is prepared either lightly fried

and salted, or steamed with layers of

Yunnan ham nestled between slices.

All in all, In&Out is simple, tastefully

decorated with waiters wearing Yunnan

traditional attire. It is humble, serene

and absolutely a taste worth going

back to encounter again and again.

CHINESE

GOVERNMENT

SCHOLARSHIP

A STUDENT’S EXPERIENCE & GUIDE

TO THE APPLICATION PROCESS!

By Camilla Fatticcioni

This is my third year as a master

student at the China Academy of

Art in Hangzhou, yet it seems like

only yesterday that I applied! When

I started this incredible experience, I didn’t

know a lot about China and the master’s

program I decided to apply for, but today I

can say that I am happy to have made this

decision to study here in this amazing city.

The reason I chose China as the place

to continue my postgraduate studies is

quite simple: I studied at the Ca’ Foscari

University of Venice, School of Oriental

Society Languages and Culture choosing

a curriculum on Chinese studies, and for

this reason China seemed the easiest and

most direct way to continue my studies.

I learned about the chance of this

scholarship during one of my first trips to

the “Middle Kingdom”: in fact, in 2016 I had

won my first scholarship, the one reserved

each year by the Confucius Institute, and

this gave me the precious chance to study

Chinese in Lanzhou, Gansu Province. At

the time I didn’t know what to do after my

bachelors and I thought that applying for

my masters in China would make sense. I

prepared all the application materials at

the very last minute: at that time, I couldn’t

find much information about Chinese

scholarships, so I did everything without

knowing what I was looking for. I still

have nightmares about sending all the

documents and emailing many universities

asking about their master programs!

HOW TO APPLY?

Enrolment for scholarships usually

open toward mid-January and close

late March / early April, but every

university has its own timetable. The

most prestigious universities, such as

Fudan in Shanghai or Beida in Beijing,

usually close enrolment for scholarships

very early, at the end of February.

First, I suggest choosing carefully the

university, both according to the studies

that you would like to pursue and the

city where you would like to live. You

should ask yourself “What am I looking

for?”. Every university website has a

page dedicated to the scholarship’s

opportunity: start checking this page

redstarhangzhou.com 11

/ LIFESTYLE // 广 告 • 生 活 方 式

from late December / early January

to know the application deadlines.

All the information about the

scholarship and the universities you

can apply for will be published on

the government scholarship official

website http://www.campuschina.

org/ generally by the end of January.

There are two ways to apply for the

government scholarship: through an

agency, such as at the Chinese embassy, or

by directly applying to the university you

are interested in – just as I did, because to

me this seemed to be the easiest option.

It’s even possible that some universities

may not accept applications directly.

Check your case on the website of the

university that you’ve chosen or by

contacting the university directly via email.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

• You must not be a Chinese citizen.

• You must not possess another

scholarship issued by the Chinese

government or any of its delegations.

• Age: Bachelor degree students

must not be more than 25 years

of age, 35 years of age for master’s

degrees and 40 for PhD studies.

• Minimum educational requirements:

High school diploma for bachelor’s

degree students, a bachelor’s degree

for master’s degree students, and a

master’s degree for PhD students.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION:

• Application form: You will find

this form after registering on the

official webpage for Chinese central

government scholarships. https://

studyinchina.csc.edu.cn/#/login

• Highest level academic diploma

and a transcript of the personal

academic scores for this diploma. If

you haven’t graduated yet, sending

only the transcript of the personal

academic scores is enough.

• Official medical form or Foreigner

Physical Examination Form. You must

attach a copy of this form filled out by

a doctor. Ensure that the form signed

by the doctor and contains an official

seal from the hospital or medical

centre where you are examined.

• Study plan written in English or

Chinese: You can attach a document

that contains information on your

specialty and academic interests.

• Two letters of recommendation written

in English or Chinese from a professor.

• Although this is NOT an essential

requirement to apply for a scholarship,

if you have an HSK diploma (Chinese

proficiency level), you should attach

it. The Chinese government plans to

finance you for up to a maximum of

two years of university studies in the

Chinese language for you to obtain

the level of Chinese required for the

program that you have chosen.

• Another important but not essential

requirement is the pre-admission letter

12 redstarhangzhou.com

Going to study in China means having to

adapt, as would be the same for anyone

going to study in a foreign country:

language and cultural differences are

the first difficulties, but with the time

my classes and Chinese classmates and

professors: Today, I have an international

and Chinese family here that help me

any time I find problems. I’m learning a

lot, not only in class: this experience of

studying in China is very rich, with each

day that I am spending in China I become

more certain I made the right choice.

from the destination university. This

letter can be issued by the university

in the event that it decides beforehand

that it wants you as a student.

APPLICATION PROCESS:

• Application period: From January to April

of each year. Some authorised agencies

or universities shorten this period.

Check your particular case to be sure.

• The application must be done online

first https://studyinchina.csc.edu.cn/ and

later you must submit documentation

to the authorised agency or the

university of your choice prior to the

end of the application period.

• At the beginning of the online

application procedure, you will be

asked to choose the type of scholarship

based on its financing type (full or

partial scholarship) and the number

of the authorised agency or university

(a code that you can easily find online

typing Chinese university agency

number or that will be provided to you

by the entity that you have selected).

• Once you have filled out all the

information on the online application,

you will be required to attach the

required documentation in PDF format.

All this documentation plus a copy of

the application form and documents

is what you will have to submit to the

authorised agency or chosen university.

• The results will be made public

on the same application

webpage starting mid-July.

MY EXPERIENCE DOING A

MASTER’S DEGREE IN CHINA

At the end of July 2017, I found out that

I had won the scholarship for the China

Academy of Art in Hangzhou. There wasn’t

much warning; the acceptance letter came

very late, and the documents to apply for

a visa came in late August: I found myself

running to get a visa in time and prepare

for my departure in mid-September.

And like that, always on the run, I landed

in Hangzhou: everything happened so

fast, chaotic and frenetic before leaving,

and all my friends asked me why I would

ever choose to go to China for 4 years.

At that time 4 years seemed an eternity,

but time is flying and after my first

“adjustment-year” in Hangzhou I started

understanding how to get the best from

this experience in a Chinese university.

The first rule of survival at a Chinese

university is to be patient; it will take

some time to understand how the system

works and the secret is to not give up

when faced with your first difficulties and

misunderstandings with university offices

and professors. Going to study in China

means having to adapt, as would be the

same for anyone going to study in a foreign

country: language and cultural differences

are the first difficulties, but with the time

these difficulties will enrich you. When

I first started this master’s, I was afraid

to be alone and not able to understand

2020 SCHOLARSHIP

APPLICATION DEADLINES:

There are 274 Chinese Universities offering

scholarships for international students: each

university has its own scholarship deadline.

this is before 30 April each year, but I

suggest checking the website of the

university you are interested to apply for.

A FORAY INTO

MASIKISM

WE MUST EMBRACE. HER.

OUR MOTHER EARTH.

By Brine Taz and Jared Thompson

Witnessing Canadian artist

Masik’s art performance on the

26th of December during her

first exhibition here in Hangzhou

was spellbinding. Showcasing

25 original paintings, and a

performance that broke the fourth

wall by involving the audience,

made this debut on the Hangzhou

art scene a hit affair. This was

a night of music, libations and

snacks for the people who came

out to admire these unique and

inspired works.

14 redstarhangzhou.com

The exhibition centred around our

natural environment and the roles

we play out within it. Using entirely

upcycled materials from the fashion

factory, JAC, by Jacqueline Conoir, where

Masik’s studio has been since arriving in

Hangzhou, both the visual and material

composition of her art were metaphors

for the impact we are having on the world

that sustains us. Some of the artworks

featured a combination of shattered glass,

crumpled plastics and old ropes. But it

was her use of these common materials

in such original ways that helped imagine

the emotional forces that are bubbling

up under Masik’s skin and driving her

need to deconstruct and then recreate

the world around her in her work.

During the performance, she placed a

half-dozen people inside translucent,

iridescent plastic and proceeded to scroll

black paint all around the outside. She

vigorously painted while onlookers were

asked to utter the following mantra into

a microphone passed around: One class.

One race. One nation. One face. We must

embrace. Her. Our Mother Earth. And

Bring her back to health. We only borrow

for our time. Lest we do it with care.

This performance and her other art pieces

are made with an almost sympathetic flow

of colours that blend to tell awe-inspiring,

deeper tales than the modern paintings

seem to offer at first glance. I found myself

thinking, ‘Isn’t this what art is all about,

catching the mind off guard

then leaving it in a frenzy?’

Some of her pieces moved

me more than others,

but they were all deeply

subjective and brought

about that internal dialogue

that is at the core of modern

abstract art. I felt a certain

degree of fragile honesty

in her style, and that sense

more than anything else was

one of the most powerful

impressions I took away from

the exhibition. It felt more

and more like a coming

together of ideas, not just

her own, but of places,

peoples, perspectives from

all over the world. It felt

like stepping into a sea of

emotion, all-encompassing,

leaving you adrift in thought,

but not suffocating you in it.

广 告 • 文 化 // CULTURE /

One of my favourites of her paintings, was

“How to Become a Goddess.” It felt ethereal

and somewhat esoteric in its depiction of

the female form as a place within us all; one

that watches over us and sees what’s within.

It felt as if there was a higher self within

that conception, a self that is revealed only

through adversity and grows from it.

“Reflection at the Pond” really struck a

chord with me in that it felt vibrantly

present. The silhouette of a female

perfectly posed, an echo of the piece I

just mentioned above. It made me reflect

again on this sense of growth, the things

we do to adapt and blossom, and how

that can sometimes shroud the true

selves that we have hidden within.

Masik, who recently chose to make

Hangzhou her home, started painting

and sculpting around the age of 7,

mostly with her family—she is one of

seven children. She remembers that

she always felt drawn to create and find

new ways to express herself. Through

the years, her passion to externalise

this creative well-spring has guided her

all through her life. So, I asked her...

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE

THESE 25 PIECES IN JUST

A FEW SHORT MONTHS?

“My inspiration for the exhibition was

driven by the JAC fashion design house

and by Greta Thunberg and the massive

school rally movement she has started. She

really got me thinking about my carbon

footprint and how I could bring these two

inspirations together. I opened for the

Hangzhou Fashion Week when I first arrived

in China by finishing a massive art piece in

a 7 minutes performance. That experience

was also a great form of inspiration in many

of the works at this exhibition. It took a

great amount of study and development

through paintings before to try to represent

this powerful piece of music that had really

moved me called ‘Figure in the landscape’.”

WHY HANGZHOU AND

WHAT DO YOU SEE IN YOUR

FUTURE IN CHINA?

“I first came in 2006 in Shanghai while

still having a project going on in Canada,

I knew at some point I would come

back. I’m very curious about the culture

and history of this country, and I hope

to be embraced by the art community

here and make Hangzhou my base. “

If I had to summarise Masikism I’d say it

is a symphony of colour marching across

canvas and swirling over and around vinyl

journeying to tell you a new, yet somehow

familiar story that rolls around in your

head days after it first entered. Only time

will paint the picture of how Masikism

will unfold here in Hangzhou, but one

thing is for sure, her break out exhibition

has really captured my attention.

STREET FOOD

CHEAP, DELICIOUS & FILLING!

By Turaeva Ziyodakhon

China is well-known the world

over because of its beautiful

culture, modern technologies

and unique cuisine. China is also

known as the motherland of tea. But not

everyone knows that Chinese street food

is an amazing phenomenon that deserves

attention. Chinese street vendors can

offer you a variety of amazing dishes with

different tastes and ingredients that will

cost you less than you can ever imagine.

Indeed, trying street food should definitely

be one of the items on your ‘Experience

China’ checklist! Here we would like to

introduce to you some of the varieties of

extremely delicious street dishes of China!

CARAMELISED

FRUITS

Caramelised fruits are one of the most

amazing things that you can find in the

streets and night markets of China. Kiwi,

orange, apple and especially caramelised

strawberry are very famous among

foreigners. The taste of caramelised

fruits is unique and sweet. Just seeing

caramelised fruits will make you feel

like buying them. The cost starts

not regret the money you spend!

We hope that this article was useful and

that you are now inspired to go out and

try Chinese street foods for yourself!

XIA BIAN

Xia bian is a small fritter with fried shrimp

and greens. The taste of xia bian is quite

good although a bit oily and the price

JI DAN BIN

Ji dan bin is tasty egg pancake. You can

watch your ji dan bin being cooked for

you right in front of your eyes. On the hot

stove, first egg is fried on the special thin

bread and then you can choose vegetables

and meat to put inside of your ji dan bin.

I prefer to add onion, carrot, cucumber,

tofu and chicken to my ji dan bin. After

everything is done, they just fold it up so

it’s very easy to hold and eat. Ji dan bin

makes a delicious lunch that will cost you

from 7 RMB – 15 RMB. By the way you

can also add ketchup or mayonnaise!

MA CHIU

Ma chiu is a sweet puff with a little bit of red

bean inside. It is really sweet and very oily.

Ma Chiu also has sesame seeds on the top

and although it is quite small, one piece of

ma chiu can make your stomach full. If you

are in search of something sweet and have

a spare 1.5 RMB, then you must try Ma Chiu.

CHOU DOFU

Chou dofu or in English “Stinky Tofu” is

probably the most horrible thing that you

can try or smell on the streets of China.

This tofu is well-known because of its bad

smell and almost everyone who has ever

visited China will remember it! Our survey

showed that while 98% of foreigners dislike

chou dofu, the Chinese really love to eat

it. Seeing long lines of Chinese waiting in

chou dofu shops can never stop foreigners

from being surprised. Many Chinese diners

say this tofu is crispy on the outside but soft

on the inside and is available in either black

or white. You can also choose between

spicy or not spicy. If you are interested

and brave enough to try, a large portion of

chou dofu costs around 12 RMB. We would

love to hear what you think of this very

particular type of street food afterwards!

CHAO FAN

“Chao fan” is translated to English as “fried

rice”. Chao fan is not only tasty street food

but also a traditional Chinese dish. It is hard

to find Chinese who do not like delicious

chao fan with meat and vegetables. Chao

Fan is also one of the most favourite dishes

of foreigners. In chao fan shops you can

see long lines Chinese

and foreigners all

waiting to buy

their portion

of amazing

fried rice. One

of the things that

makes chao fan special is

that you can watch it being cooked in

front of your eyes on the hot stove. You

can choose to add some vegetables and

meat to your chao fan and also “spicy”

and “not spicy” options are available.

BAO ZI

Bao zi are very similar to dumplings and

are often considered the queen of Chinese

street food. They should definitely be high

up on your “Must Try!” list. For Chinese, bao

zi is often breakfast: every morning you can

see long lines of Chinese students waiting

to buy their portion of bao zi at ‘hole in the

wall’ bao zi stalls. Inside the white dough

you can find vegetables, meat or even

seafood. The most important advantage

of bao zi is that everyone can try it. If you

are vegetarian, you can try vegetable-filled

bao zi. This type of bao zi is called “shu cai

bao zi”. If you are Muslim you can choose

vegetable or seafood bao zi. Seafood bao

zi is mostly made from shrimp and is called

“xia bao zi” or if you are meat lover then

beef (niu rou), pork (zhu rou) and chicken

(zhi rou) bao zi are available for you. Just 2

bao zi can fill your stomach and the price

starts from just 1.5 RMB - 3 RMB each,

depending on the filling. This makes a really

cheap, delicious and filling breakfast.

YOU ARE JUST TWO

HOURS AWAY FOR

YOUR NEXT AMAZING

SKIING TRIP!

By Maddalena Depalo

Hangzhou is a place where you can find just about anything you want. You can relax and be surrounded by

nature or find your way to a crazy party at a KTV and sing the night away. You can cross the lake

on a boat, go hiking up to Lingyin temple, join any number of group sports or find

friends in a club or association. But when winter comes around, there

is just one thing missing in Hangzhou for me: Skiing.

广 告 • 文 化 // CULTURE /

I’m a summer person, but when the

days turn cold, skiing becomes my

favourite part of winter. Most expats

think that there cannot possibly

be anywhere to ski in the immediate

surroundings of Hangzhou. It is a subtropical

climate after all—there are still

mosquitos buzzing about in houses

this time of year for goodness sake!

Yet, if you have been longing to get some

skiing in this season, I have some great

news for all you Hangzhou skiing and

snowboarding fans. There are 15 places

around Zhejiang province where you can

grab your skis or board and have some fun

in the snow. Three of them are indoors but,

surprisingly, the others are all outdoors.

The only thing you need to do is take a car

or hop on a bus to these amazing white

mountains and hills. You don’t even need

to have your own equipment. All these

places provide basic skiing equipment,

from goggles and helmets to skis and ski

suits. What if you have never skied before?

Don’t worry, there are plenty of tour

guides providing different tailored services

based on your needs and cover things like

bus fares, tour guides and tickets to the

slopes. The price depends on the duration

of the trip and the time of the year, but

normally ranges from 200 to 500 RMB.

Prices naturally spike during holidays.

Because the commute can be rather long,

and you want to get the most skiing in

possible, most people usually decide to stay

one night at a hotel nearby, but the tour

group I went with said it is possible to ask

for a one-day trip to and from Hangzhou.

The day trip can often be cheaper as well, as

the most expensive things are the transport

and the accommodation. If you have a low

budget there are still good options open

to you. Some of the parks in the north of

Zhejiang are very cheap, and you can ski for

a day or two there for just 200 to 300 RMB.

Daming Mountain Skiing (dà míng shān

húa xǔe - 大 明 山 滑 雪 ) is the closet place to

Hangzhou. You can book your trip online

or contact the guide you find here below

directly on WeChat. Day trip groups usually

leave from Hangzhou around 08:00 and

return around 19:00 the same day.

DAMING MOUNTAIN SKIING

Trip duration: 08:00 – 19:00

Travel Time: Approximately 2 hours drive

Price: 200 – 500 RMB

Arrange a trip: Contact the tour guide directly

by adding him through his WeChat ID

or at this link: https://m.tb.cn/

h.eyyNhGW?sm=d4bfb3

(Please make a reservation at

least one full day in advance)

So, what are you waiting for? Contact one of

the tour guides or just plan your own a trip

to hit the slopes on these amazing white

mountains that you simply won’t believe are

in the same province as Hangzhou. And if

you have never skied before… well, there’s

always a first time for everything, isn’t there?

CHINESE ANIMAL

HOROSCOPES

By Jerry

It’s a new day! You walk into your office building and notice one of your coworkers

has gotten a haircut. “Nice haircut Jenny”, you say. “Thanks John! It

is such a rat thing for you to notice. You are definitely a rat!”, replies Jenny,

your co-worker. What gives? Why did she call you a rat? I will explain:

Depending on your birth year, you are assigned a zodiac animal according

to the classification system born from “The Great Race” (Part 1 of The

Chinese Zodiac, see January issue of REDSTAR). For example, if you were

born in 1993 you are a rooster; born in 1994 - a dog; and if you were

born in 1992 – you are a monkey! Each animal has a unique set of personality

traits associated with it along with different compatibilities with other animals:

1. 2. 3. 4.

RAT / shǔ 鼠

BIRTH YEARS:

1912, 1924, 1936, 1948, 1960,

1972, 1984, 1996, 2008, 2020

STRENGTHS:

People born in the year of the

rat are said to be acute and alert.

Aware of their surroundings,

rats are adaptive and can

quickly react to changes in

their environment. They have a

very social nature and are often

extraverted in their behavior.

WEAKNESSES:

Picky about other people’s

shortcomings, the rat can

unintentionally hurt your

feelings. Rats also lack

persistence - they switch jobs

frequently and find it hard to

focus on one thing for a long

time.

COMPATIBILITIES:

Ox, Monkey, Dragon

Relationships between rats and

these animals are often very

stable. Though there aren’t any

extreme highs or lows, these

relationships never lack passion

and romance.

OX / niú 牛

BIRTH YEARS:

1913, 1925, 1937, 1949, 1961,

1973, 1985, 1997, 2009

STRENGTHS:

Honest and straightforward,

the ox is industrious and

responsible. Team workers with

a strong devotion to their work

and their faith.

WEAKNESSES:

Oxen are considered

conservative and a little

stubborn in their ways. They are

less articulate than the other

animals and so are often seen as

bad communicators.

COMPATIBILITIES:

Rat, Snake, Rooster

Loyalty and faith are the

keys in the relationships of

these animals. They tend to

share family duties and are

responsible, dependable

partners.

TIGER / hǔ 虎

BIRTH YEARS:

1914, 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962,

1974, 1986, 1998, 2010

and confident in their own

abilities. Exuding an image of

power and authority, they speak

their minds and gain the respect

of others quickly.

People who are born in the year

of the tiger may sometimes

come off a little bit arrogant

and cocky. Tigers are a bit selfrighteous.

When their ideas are

met with criticism, they can be

aggressive and defensive.

Dragon, Horse, Pig

When tigers match with one

of the animals above, they can

RABBIT / tù 兔

BIRTH YEARS:

1915, 1927, 1939, 1951, 1963,

the Chinese Zodiac, rabbits are

tender and gracious. They are

and overly cautious. When

faced with obstacles they will

try to put it off or escape it

completely.

COMPATIBILITIES:

Sheep, Monkey, Dog, Pig

Rabbits make lasting

relationships with the animals

above. They are romantic and

others. They are neurotic and

paranoid which cause them to

be hesitant and suspicious of

others.

COMPATIBILITIES:

Humble in nature, goats are

diligent and hard-working but

like to keep a low profile. They

are considerate of others and

persistent in their pursuit of

knowledge and their career.

WEAKNESSES:

While they do keep a low profile,

goats love to be adored and

attended to by other people.

They are timid and sometimes

vain. Some will adopt a

pessimistic attitude because of

their personality.

COMPATIBILITIES:

Horse, Rabbit, Pig

Often playing the passive role in

relationships, goats are tender

and shy. However, matching

are honest people who inspire

confidence in others which

make them great leaders.

WEAKNESSES:

Dogs can be anxious at the

wrong times. They can be

stubborn and impatient which

sometimes render themselves

emotionally unavailable and

cold.

COMPATIBILITIES:

Rabbit

While dogs have a difficult

time pleasing their soulmates,

they are one of the most loyal

partners. They are responsible

individuals and can provide

their partners with love and a

sense of security. With a rabbit

as their partner, the relationship

thrives through their similar

personality traits and interests.

BIRTH YEARS:

1923, 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971,

1983, 1995, 2007, 2019

STRENGTHS:

People born in the year of the

pig tend to be well-tempered,

strong-hearted individuals. Pigs

have an optimistic personality

and face challenges head-on

without fear. They love their

friends and are kind to their

loved ones.

WEAKNESSES:

Sometimes, pigs can be a little

slow-witted and unaware of

their surroundings. They can be

a little naïve and gullible which

may impede their progress in

life. While they are great to their

friends, they keep a close, tightknit

circle.

COMPATIBILITIES:

Tiger, Rabbit, Sheep

Pigs can be overwhelmingly

enthusiastic once they fall in

love with a partner. They tend

to give out many surprises and

gifts. Relationships involving the

above animals last long because

of their shared values and

willingness to work together.

Upon reflection, you realise what Jenny meant

by her comment. She was complimenting you

on your awareness of your surroundings which

is typical for those born in the year of the rat.

“Thanks, Jenny!”, you reply, being the sociable

rat that you are.

While some people swear by their zodiac animal

personalities, others have different views. I know

some families who will hold off having kids just

to have the zodiac animal they want. I also know

families who don’t even know about the Chinese

Zodiac. Regardless of which camp you are in, it

is probably beneficial that you know about the

existence of such a classification system. After

all, it is an interesting piece of Chinese history

and culture. Perhaps you might even use this as

an excuse to ask out that man/woman you’ve

always had your eye on.

Happy New Year!

Note: There are so many other things about the

Chinese Zodiac animals including bad matches,

classification by elements, job prospects etc.

that I did not mention here. I encourage you

to do more research about your own specific

animal and year!

ELOPE

TOGETHER

10 NEARBY PLACES FOR A

ROMANTIC WEEKEND GETAWAY

By Maddalena Depalo

Valentine’s Day is one of those

magical days that can really

bring a couple together. This

year the 14th of February

happens to fall on a Friday, and what

could be better than a quick weekend

escape with your better half? Even if

you don’t happen to a significant other

in your life, it’s still a great weekend to

escape the lonely singles blues with

your best friends. Since Shanghai will

be crowded and overbooked for sure,

there are plenty of beautiful places

close to Hangzhou that you can run

off to instead. Here is a list of our picks

for the best spots for a short getaway.

NEARBY CITIES

TRAIN: 1h 30m

SUGGESTION: Have a cocktail in WooBar

In just an hour and a half, you can reach

the highly visited garden city of East China,

Suzhou. Book a hotel in the magical old

town and get lost in its winding alleys

along the river. Suzhou is certainly a place

where the mystery of old China meets

the wonder of the new. From the classical

sprawling gardens, (UNESCO heritage

sites), to the swanky new Suzhou district

( 苏 州 新 区 ) it has a bit of everything

to keep you walking hand-in-hand.

NANJING 南 京

TRAIN: 1h 30m

PRICE: 235 RMB round trip

SUGGESTION: Have a drink at

the bar in Zifeng Tower

The “Southern Capital,” was the national

capital of various Chinese dynasties and is

a historical and cultural fulcrum in the Pearl

River Delta region. Some places not to miss

are the Nanjing Library, Nanjing Museum

and Nanjing Art Museum. Nanjing has also

one of the tallest towers in the world, Zifeng

Tower, where there’s a public observatory

(72F), but we recommend choosing one of

the fancy bars and enjoying a drink while

gazing out onto the stunning city skyline.

NINGBO 宁 波

TRAIN: 1h 15m

PRICE: 140 RMB round trip

SUGGESTION: Visit the Nanxi Hot Springs

The city offers different attractions like the

Ashoka Temple, Tiantong Temple, Baoguo

the most well-preserved old towns in this

region, known for its cultural importance

(reachable by bus from Wuzhen)

Only 90 km from Hangzhou and just 1 hour

lies the picturesque village of Wuzhen ( 乌

镇 ). It boasts the residence of Mao Dun, a

renowned modern Chinese revolutionary

writer. The Fanglu Pavilion is a quaint

Contemporary Art Exhibition and Bridge

is also worth checking out; it’s a scenic

attraction created by two ancient bridges.

WUYUAN COUNTY 婺 源 县

TRAIN: 1h 30m - 2h

PRICE: 130 RMB one way + 210 RMB

entrance (free for students)

SUGGESTION: Check out Likeng, Wangkou,

period while you walk about its stunning

rice terraces (Wuyuan Huangling).

XIANJU COUNTY 仙 居 县

BUS: 2-3h

PRICE: 160-200 RMB round trip

SUGGESTION: Swim at Danzhu Virgin Forest

Like Wuyuan, Xianju is perfect for eloping

from the big noisy city for a retreat into

the nature that surrounds it. Xianju

County offers ancient villages steeped in

the authenticity that can only gained by

standing the slow methodical test of time.

NATURAL SIGHTSEEING

YUNHE RICE TERRACE 云 和 县

then get out to the rice terraces very early

in the morning so as to enjoy the gorgeous

view together, before the crowd arrives.

Lishui, like Guilin, has one of the most

beautiful rice terrace scenes in China (Yunhe

rice terrace), and it is home of the She ethnic

group, a very small Chinese minority. You

can learn about the culture and customs of

this unique and marvellous ethnic culture

while getting some great selfies together.

THOUSAND ISLANDS LAKE

千 岛 湖

You have all likely heard of Nongfu Springs

Water and Cheerday Beer, well this is the

place where most everything we drink in

Zhejiang province comes from. Qiandao Hu,

a massive lake is one of the most famous in

Zhejiang. It is a man-made freshwater lake

just a few hours from Hangzhou. If you’re

looking for a sport hub to have an adventure

retreat, this is the place. There are tonnes

of things to try: cycling, boating (including

SUP, Kayak, Canoe, Packraft), and fishing.

You can even take a boat out and go diving

to the ancient submerged city of Shicheng.

MOUNT MOGAN 莫 干 山

PRICE: 12 RMB (one-way bus) + 100 RMB taxi

SUGGESTION: Climb in two days

Just 60 km from Hangzhou, the small

town of Moganshan its known for its

cool temperatures during the scorching

summers and its country lifestyle with a mix

of local inns and aged 20th century villas.

Mount Mogan, with its beautiful bamboo

forest, is the perfect place for a peaceful

weekend in nature. The Moganshan

musts are hiking in the bamboo forests,

swimming in the reservoirs, cycling

and mountain biking, kayaking the

reservoirs, horse riding and picking tea.

HUANGSHAN (YELLOW

MOUNTAIN) 黄 山

TRAIN: 1h 30m - 2h from Hangzhou to Huang

Shan city, where shuttles depart for Tangkou

( 汤 口 ), adjacent to the entrance to the park.

PRICE: 240 RMB train (round trip)

BY FOOT: The climb starts at Tangkou ( 汤 口 )

BY CABLE CAR: There are shuttles that

connect directly the station, airport and

the city to the cable cars starting point

SUGGESTION: Take the full two days and

climb it. You are on vacation after all,

and it’s a long walk to talk together.

A bit further away from Hangzhou is

Huangshan, one of the five great mountains

in China. Its stunning landscapes have

always been the subject in generation after

generation of the Chinese art and poetry,

like the works of the famous Tang Dynasty

poet, Li Bai. Even though the distance to

the summit is no small journey (10 hours)

it’s possible to climb it in one day, but

taking your time will be worth it, since

Huangshan’s sunrises and sunsets will take

your breath away, just like that first kiss.

A VALENTINE’S DAY

SURVIVAL GUIDE

FOR SINGLES

By Camilla Fatticcioni

February just started, and you probably already feel sick of all those red heart decorations in the

shops and the happy couples walking all around the West Lake holding hands? Don’t worry, you

are not alone. Here are some tips on how to get through Valentine’s day, no better halves needed.

30 redstarhangzhou.com

广 告 • 文 化 // CULTURE /

THIS HOLIDAY IS REALLY

ABOUT SPENDING, NOT

FEELINGS

We can start from the legend behind the

14th of February, and it does not have

a fairytale ending at all. Popular legend

holds that the Roman Emperor Claudius

II executed a priest called Valentine of

Terni on the 14th of February around the

year 278 A.D. What crime did he commit?

Valentine continued to perform marriage

ceremonies for young couples in secret

after Claudius II had outlawed such happy

unions to encourage more men to join

the army. It is said that Valentine even

signed his last farewell note before he

was beheaded, “from your Valentine.”

The ultimate sacrifice that inspired

Valentine’s Day certainly seems to be

lacking in the consumer-focused holiday

we celebrate today! This is a day where

the florists can seem happier than the

people giving or receiving the flowers.

Just remember the people happiest

about this holiday are the one’s making

the money off the loving couples.

2

1

DON’T BEAT YOURSELF UP

“I am enjoying a relationship with two men,

simultaneously: the first is Ben, and the

other is Jerry” These comical words from

Bridget Jones’ Diary are easy to relate to on

Valentine’s Day. How many times have you

felt the same? If you feel yourself getting

depressed as the day approaches, make

a conscious decision to be positive and

kind to yourself. What makes you special?

I’ll bet there are thousands of things that

are great about you! Dedicate your spare

time to your favourite hobbies or activities

instead of being sad and sedentary

on the couch. You can pick another

time to cry in front of some tearjerker

movie, tell yourself this isn’t the day.

3

TREAT YOURSELF

If you are really bothered by the fact that

no one is buying you flowers or chocolate,

don’t despair because you can always

buy something for yourself. Become your

own admirer and spoil yourself on this

day because you are worth it. Even better

news is that unlike the love birds out there,

you also don’t have to buy a present for

someone else. All the better to use that

money to treat someone really special:

yourself! Shopping is an amazing form of

therapy, and quoting one of my favourite

movies, Confessions of a Shopaholic: “A

man will never love you or treat you as

well as a store. If a man doesn’t fit, you

can’t exchange him seven days later

for a gorgeous cashmere sweater.”

4

EVEN IF YOU ARE SINGLE,

DON’T GO IT ALONE

Even if you spoil yourself on Valentine’s

Day, it can be a lonely day no matter

how much you spend. Misery, as they

say, does want company after all. So, as

always, a good friend can be just the

thing you need to get through the day.

My best friend was actually the one who

gave me this wonderful idea. She said,

“Why don’t we dress up fancy, put on

some makeup, and go out for a dinner

together on the 14th February together?

No man required!” You don’t have to

spend Valentine’s evening alone, enjoy

the best part of being single and have fun

with your friends. The 14th of February

is just another day after all; it’s what we

do with it that makes it memorable.

5

FIND THE TIME TO RELAX

One of the best things to do is to take

some personal time. It is always nice to

have a rest from your busy routine for a

nice hot bath or a massage. Hangzhou is

full of pleasant places to have a walk or

meditate. Taking care of your wellbeing

should be one of the first things on your

daily to-do list, and this couldn’t be truer

on a day like Valentine’s Day. Celebrate

the one person that you absolutely

cannot live without: your very own self.

6

LOVE COMES IN MANY FORMS

Who can say that this day when St.

Valentine died for bringing people who

cared for other people together intended

this holiday to be reserved for lovers

in relationships? I know of many forms

that love can take that are just as strong

as and just as deep as the fairytale ones

described in some romantic novels and

movies. Love is love, and it is all around

us. Share some love with people around

you. Reach out to family like your parents

or siblings, ring up an old friend and catch

up, or just stay in and cuddle with a pet.

Why not buy your pet a treat and have a

night in—they are certainly some of the

most faithful partners anyone can ask for!

If you are still feeling down just

remember, couples get one special

day a year, but single people are

celebrated and sought after the whole

year round. Happy Valentine’s Day!

STAGES OF A

RELATIONSHIP

FINDING POSITIVE POINTS IN EVERY

STAGE OF THE RELATIONSHIP AND

GROWING FROM THEM.

By Ane Ayerbe

Who hasn’t dreamt of having

a “fairytale” romance?

Having the perfect

relationship, one full

of passion where no one is ever

sad? If you’re dreaming for this

kind of love… let me wake you

up. You can find love, but it won’t

be anything like a Disney movie.

I’m sorry to disappoint you, but

you need to get your head out

of the clouds and be a bit more

realistic. Every couple is different,

and when it comes to love, there

is no fairytale ending. Everyone

is different; therefore, every

relationship is different. But all

couples go through different stages

in their relationships and Being

aware of where you are as a couple

is the key to moving forward.

I have found that there are 5

different stages most relationships

seem to go through:

1. THE ATTRACTION

STAGE – SUNSHINE AND

HONEYMOON PHASE

“Happy forever”. This is the most radiant

stage of the relationship, the one in which

all emotions are experienced with intensity;

both people are in a state of complete

euphoria. The two lovers are falling for

each other and it seems nothing can go

wrong. Everything is perfect from your

first kiss to the electricity you feel during

it. I would give you two bits of advice here.

First, you should be yourself right from

the beginning. Second, enjoy this stage

while you can, because the next stages

are where things get real—Trust me!

But now, be honest... How much time

have you really taken to get to know each

other? We don’t spend enough energy

trying to know the other person because

everything revolves around the passion

and chemistry. But what happens when

this excitement begins to decrease?

2. THE ACTUAL

BEGINNING – STARTING

TO PLANT YOUR ROOTS

This is when we begin to show

ourselves for who we really are. Now,

we put aside the idea of idealising our

partner, and begin to see that there

are things that make us different. Be

careful and see if you and your partner

have radically different life values.

Has this ever happened to you

before: you start meeting someone

and suddenly after a few months

you ask yourself, “What I’m doing

with this person?” and realise you

32 redstarhangzhou.com

广 告 • 特 辑 // FEATURES /

were blinded by love. This is because

the passion is decreasing, and

you are really getting to know the

other person. Sometimes, they just

aren’t what you were expecting.

Remember you don’t need to please

everyone. On the contrary, at this stage

of the relationship, it’s important to

recognise you are two individuals.

This phase is where the relationship is

actually beginning because the both

people are starting to get to know

each other. Certain responsibilities are

established and both people commit

to strive to make the relationship work.

/ FEATURES // 广 告 • 特 辑

3. THE CRISIS STAGE – A

STORM IS BREWING

Now just when you start feeling

comfortable with each other and things

are becoming serious, that’s when you

are likely to find the toilet seat up one too

many times and just lose it. At this moment

of the relationship, small imperfections

become much more visible and some

may seem simply intolerable. Now, the

things you thought you loved about your

partner begin to bother you or seem

less appealing. This is where you decide

whether you love the other person enough

to accept who they are completely.

Most couples will go through this stage,

and sadly, many of them will eventually

break up during it. Be honest and ask

yourself: are you willing to make this

work, or not? The crisis stage is where the

mettle of your relationship will be tested.

4. THE GROWING STAGE –

THE CLOUDS CLEAR AWAY

Congratulations! You’ve gotten over

your first real dark patch together! That

means that you have overcome your

own unrealistic expectations and built

a more stable relationship—at least on

a few issues. Now, someone cooks and

the other does the dishes. And that’s

what a relationship is, teamwork.

This period can also be a bit tricky. Don’t

stop going the extra mile to make your lover

feel special. You don’t need to be changing

everything about yourself; that’s not healthy

either. But it’s essential to remind each other

that you are together because you care

about each other. Otherwise, you would

just be friends and not in a relationship. Just

always remember you need to keep the

passion up and not just wait for it to die out!

5. THE COMMITTED STAGE

– LOVE BLOSSOMS

You REALLY choose to be together.

You’ve already passed through dozens

of hard moments, and you are sure this

is the partner you want to choose. The

committed stage is all about consciously

deciding that this person is the one you

want to be with no matter what. This

period can be quirky, curious, and exciting

too because it’s a bit like the attraction

stage. The flowers of true love have finally

bloomed. You don’t just think you’ve found

your life partner—you know it! There is

a deep connection between you both,

and this connection defines your shared

purpose and keeps you both working

together to fulfil and encourage each other.

But don’t get me wrong, the process

doesn’t end here. Even if the flower has

bloomed, you need to water and take

care of it every day to keep it vibrant and

alive. Your work together is never really

done. Love is a bed of flowers that needs

constant tending, and it’s worth it to

have someone in the garden with you.

DIVERSITY IS THE

KEY TO THE FUTURE

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR

NEW PROGRAM

HANGZHOU FAMILY

DIVERSITY IS THE

CORNERSTONE

HANGZHOU INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL IS PROUD TO BE

A FAMILY OF FAMILIES FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD.

As the world continues to race on into a

future of marvellous new opportunities,

there are so many things we can’t predict

on the horizon. While we cannot be

sure what the world will look like in 20 years,

there is one trend we can be sure of: the world

is becoming more and more interconnected. As

countries, markets, and people become more

dependent on each other, an appreciation of the

diverse backgrounds and cultures that make up our

beautiful world will be central to navigating the

future with people from all corners of the globe.

Hangzhou International School has diversity at

its very core. This ‘family of multicultural families’

ensures students learn about our diverse world

from each other—and that is just as important as

any other class they could take. We asked just a few

of the wonderful families that make up Hangzhou

International School to let us know why they

thought an international world view is important.

• CANON FAMILY

Clara (Saint-Junien, France), Luc (Confolens,

France), Emilie (Hangzhou, China), Tina

(Chenzhou, China), Alexandre (Saint-Junien,

France)

We are teaching our children to be

open to the world, we travel a lot so

know that language is important but

understanding and respecting other

cultures is crucial. We always tell our

children to be proud of their nationality,

but they are first citizens of this world.

We face many global challenges and

we will have to fix them all together. So

yes, having an international mindset will

be an asset for the new generations.

We chose HIS because we were looking

for a school that can provide this kind

of environment.

44 redstarhangzhou.com

• HARDY FAMILY

Angel Li (Hangzhou, China), James Hardy

(Reading, UK), Alex Hardy (Hangzhou, China),

Xia Li not in photo (Hangzhou, China)

We are an international family, so

naturally a multicultural mindset is

important for us. It is important that

we know how to work together with

people from different cultures and

backgrounds. In the future, I guess

my children will work in international

companies where completing a task

often requires collaboration with

people from countries all over the

world: attending HIS will give them a

good base to adapt to such a work

culture. The curriculum seemed to be

a really good fit with the needs of my

children.

• SPEKSNIJDER FAMILY

Peter (Weert, the Netherlands), Gijsje

(Hangzhou, China), Amei (Hangzhou, China)

It’s important that our daughter grows

up with every possibility available to

her. The world is bigger than just the

country we are living in; we all need to

be able to feel comfortable anywhere

in the world. This is only going to be

truer as Gijsje grows up. We can learn—

and should—learn from all the diverse

viewpoints and opportunities available

in our world. With a hugely diverse

community at HIS, our daughter can

experience cultures from the whole

world right here in Hangzhou.

HANGZHOU FAMILY

• JHAMB FAMILY

Rhea (Hangzhou, China), Carmen (Hangzhou,

China), Nikhil (New Delhi, India), Kaira

(Hangzhou, China)

We believe HIS has one of the best

faculties with international standards

in Hangzhou. HIS provides a great

opportunity for children not only to

develop academically but also socially

because of the strong international

community. We feel it is very important

for children to have an international

perspective in order to become

confident people. It is fundamental

to bring your child up in a diverse

environment, as it makes them learn

to have respect for different cultural

traditions and perspectives. The world

has become a much smaller place;

growing up with such values will take

today’s children leaps and bounds in

their future life.

• LOHAUS-YANG FAMILY

April (Hangzhou, China); Stefan

(Friedrichshafen, Germany); Daniel (Hangzhou,

China); William (Hangzhou, China)

As the world becomes increasingly

interconnected, today's children will

work and engage with people from

many different cultural backgrounds.

We should always inspire our kids to

be curious about the world, and to

understand the dynamism in cultures

different from your own. Encouraging

them to interact with people across

different cultures is valuable because

they will begin to understand and

embrace different points of view.

Having an international mindset

enables the kids to deal with the fact

that there aren’t right and wrong

answers and life; things aren’t simply

black and white. There is always more

than one side of a story.

• ZHAO-KARLSSON FAMILY

Karl (Stockholm, Sweden), Philip (Stockholm,

Sweden), Anna (Stockholm, Sweden) Zoe

(Beijing, China)

Hangzhou International School is

true to its name and has a vibrant,

international community. The teaching

methodology and materials are

on par with any leading institution

abroad. As parents, we appreciate

that all manner of cultural traditions

are shared and respect for other

perspectives is actively encouraged

at the school. In the near future, our

world will change tremendously both

due to environmental influences and

as the introduction of AI into our lives

continues to grow. The children of

today will be the global citizens of

tomorrow and require an international

mindset from the beginning of their

life to succeed.

• BRANHAM FAMILY

Michael (Munich, Germany), Daniel (Mission

Viejo, USA), Renata (Bandung, Indonesia),

Benjamin (Tokyo, Japan)

There are multiple benefits for children

with an international mindset ranging

from an expanded global vision to

future career opportunities. Growing up

as "third culture children" and having

moved around Asia extensively during

their childhood, our boys have become

accustomed to and deeply respect

different cultures, religions, customs

and perspectives. What’s more, they

have embraced these different ways of

viewing the world. Our world is getting

smaller and smaller, but it is also

becoming more complex and difficult. I

am confident our children will have the

tools and experiences that will help

them to navigate this labyrinth and to

face the 21st century head on.

Romantic

SPOTS TO STROLL

HAND IN HAND

By Ryan Wilson

Hangzhou has a few spots that

are must see for all couples,

and most people are sure not

to miss them. The thing is most

people are getting out during

the day to see them and missing

these spots at their most

amazing time, night. Hangzhou

is a city known for many things,

but one thing it quietly excels

at is accent lighting. Probably

not your first thought when

thinking about what this

city offers, but lighting is an

extremely important aspect

of how enjoyable a place is

after the sun goes down.

In Hangzhou, you will find spots

that don't only become more

enjoyable in the dark hours, but

places that seem to transform into

another world entirely. Hangzhou's

accent lighting experts transform

much of the city into something that

feels like it was pulled from a timeless

fantasy world. From the warm pools

of yellow-red light used to create the

feeling of traditional lanterns dotting

the landscape, to the modern blues,

purples and greens that bathe certain

areas in an otherworldly glow, you will

constantly be surprised by the creativity

and great care put into lighting the

quiet paths around Hangzhou. They

are never so bright as to take away

the mystery from the atmosphere,

but always bright enough to give a

feeling of safety to the secluded areas.

1. WESTLAKE ALONG

NANSHAN RD.

The Westlake is of course a must

see during the day when the sun

sparkles off the calm water, and

at sunset when you will see the

watercolor orange glow fade behind

the mountains, but at night is when

you can really appreciate the brilliance

of the shoreline. The paths and parks

circling the Westlake are meticulously

designed and cared for, but during

the day all eyes are on nature. When

the lights come on at night, you can't

help to appreciate the lesser noticed

touches in the surroundings. Especially

along Nanshan road where there are

more restaurants, bars and shops to

draw nighttime activity. Every pavilion,

statue and famous monument are of

course lit with care, but amazingly so

are the trees and special landscaping

features. It is one of the true wonders

of a night time walk around Westlake.

Seeing all the trees stretch around

the lake lit so perfectly lit, and

looking across at the trees covering

Baoshi mountain with glowing lights

tucked into the forest there like

the campfires of ancient people,

is nothing short of breathtaking.

2. THE GRAND CANAL

The Grand Canal is something like

an underwater “Great Wall" as far as

feats of engineering go. It was dug

by hand from Beijing to Hangzhou

(the same distance from New York to

Florida) and is wide and deep enough

accommodate multiple shipping

barges. So, just the fact that it exists

is impressive enough. To see it in

Hangzhou is even more impressive

because it is surrounded by the most

charming parks and paths,

and crossed by dozens

of unique bridges. During

the day though, like the

Westlake, your eyes are

drawn by the waterway itself,

but at night those parks and

paths become mysterious

playgrounds for romantic

strolls. If you start in the

Westlake Cultural Square and

follow the Canal north you

can walk for hours through

deftly designed park areas,

all lit with romantic pools

of light and dotted with

perfectly lit little pavilions.

You get the feeling you are

walking in ancient times until

you hit a spot accented in

wild blues or purples and

then you might wonder if you

have accidently walked in

some futuristic dream world.

3. HEFANG STREET

Hefang Street has been a major

shopping street in Hangzhou for many

centuries. Some of the stores that

you shop in there today have been in

business for well over a hundred years

and the architecture of the whole

place brings China's past to life. At

night though, there is a different kind

of life. The kind of energy and buzz

you might find at a carnival or wild

night market. This energy along with

the beautiful lighting and red lanterns

make this place a much more exciting

night time experience. The chants

sung out by vendors, the clink of the

silversmith's hammer, the flute of the

street busker, all seem to carry their

lively sounds much better through

the night air. And if you are there to

shop with that special someone, you

couldn't ask for more inviting and

romantic time than when the stores

are all aglow. One end of Hefang Street

even has Wu Mountain topped by the

City God Pavilion, which will take your

breath away when it is lit up at night.

FULLY FUNDED SCHOLARSHIP

OPPORTUNITIES AT WELLINGTON

THIS NEW PROGRAMME AT WELLINGTON COULD BE

YOUR CHILD’S TICKET TO A TOP UNIVERSITY ABROAD

Every parent wants to provide

their child with as many options

as possible so that when they

leave home and embark on

their journey through adulthood, they

do so prepared. Parents say one of

their proudest and most bittersweet

moments comes when their child

finally steps on the convocation

stage to receive their high school

diploma- then steps down as an

adult prepared to go to university.

While living abroad and studying in

cities like Hangzhou or Shanghai can

provide several great opportunities for

children, such as immersion in multiple

languages and growing up in a diverse

cultural community, there can also be

drawbacks. What many parents may

not realise is that not all high school

diplomas are considered equal and a

high number of school programmes

in China may not necessarily carry

the weight needed to ensure

entrance into the best universities

that their child my want to enrol in.

But there is some good news.

Wellington College Hangzhou will

commence offering the world's

most highly sought after high school

programme in August 2020. For the

first time, Wellington's Hangzhou

campus will be rolling out the

International General Certificate of

Secondary English (IGCSE) for Year

48 redstarhangzhou.com

HANGZHOU FAMILY

10 (Grade 9) next academic year.

This programme applies the same

curriculum that Wellington has used

to set the standard for junior high

school excellence in England.

The IGCSE is one of the most sought

after and recognised qualifications in

the world, because it helps students

develop core skills and competencies,

including investigative skills, problem

solving, teamwork and critical

thinking—all essential skills to not only

academic success but a stable career

in our rapidly changing world. They

are also the most popular international

qualification for schools around

the world, with more than 4,800

schools over 150 countries doing the

Cambridge International Examinations

version of the IGCSE alone. Enrolling

your child in the IGCSE programme at

Wellington is an empowering way to

provide them with that competitive

edge in their academic portfolio. It will

not only make them more confident

and prepared to enter their senior

school programme in A Levels or IB

Diplomas, but will make them truly

prepared for the rigours of a postsecondary

education overseas.

Kathryn Richardson, Principal of

Wellington College International

Hangzhou, explains that “the IGCSE

is a rigorous, challenging yet exciting

academic programme that provides

children with an opportunity to learn

the key skills they will need not only

in senior school, but also in university

and beyond. Seeing children’s learning

come to life throughout the IGCSE

programme is a joy to observe, and

we look forward to seeing our own

Wellingtonians thrive in the IGCSE

in the coming academic years”.

A Huge Opportunity to Get

into the IGCSE Programme

Wellington College Hangzhou will

commence the IGCSE programme in

August 2020, as the first cohort of

students enter Year 10. In recognition

of this important milestone, Wellington

is offering a range of generous

academic scholarships for qualified

students, including the possibility

of fully funded scholarships for very

strong applicants. This would mean

that tuition fees can be fully covered

as part of the scholarship award.

Wellington are accepting a very

limited cohort into Year 10 in 2020,

so early application is advised.

For those parents interested in learning

more about the IGCSE programme,

Wellington College International

Hangzhou is hosting an information

session on Saturday, 22nd February at

10am. Parents will have an opportunity

to ask questions and learn more

about the IGCSE, meet members of

the academic team,

tour the campus and

get a feel for really

what sets Wellington

apart. To register,
