MEET THE LOCALS

What brought

you to

Hangzhou?

Where do you

recommend to travel

inside China in summer?

What is the biggest

cultural difference

between China and

your native culture?

I love the cultural diversity Hangzhou

has to offer and the opportunities

that exist everywhere in this city.

Hangzhou, everything

is in Hangzhou.

I think just the language, the

rest is very much similar.

I have been living in

Shanghai for almost 5

years now. I founded

my company there, a

music school called

MusicLAB. After a couple

of years we decided to

open another LAB in

Hangzhou and here I am.

From the places I have

visited I loved Guanxi

province, especially

Yangshuo. I love the

scenery there, hiking,

walks next to the

river and of course

as in every place of

China, the food.

This one is a hard question. Actually I never thought

about it, as I barely compare here and there.

Maybe the role of the family in our life. That’s pretty different

from here to the Basque Country. Back home we are really

united too, but feels different. You would actually never

see a couple living with parents after getting married (in

China there are cases and cases too), but that’s something

that I could say is really different from my home country.

I’ve been debating where to settle down

in China. I had two cities to choose from

(Shanghai & Hangzhou). Shanghai was quite

tempting for me, it’s a beautiful city, however

I fell in love with Hangzhou because of it's

interesting history and stunning nature with

many lakes and mountains. It was so different

from crazy Shanghai and so special that

eventually I had no doubt where I belong.

Hangzhou became my home far away from

home in 2018 and still remains so.

First of all, explore beautiful Hangzhou!

Sometimes you think you’ve seen

everything around here, but trust me there

is much more than the West Lake this city

hides from you.

And second, if you look for new places to

travel, book a trip with Uni-Travel. They

specialise on group travel all around China!

I’m looking forward to booking my next

trip to Sichuan province with them.

Definitely the way Chinese people

take care of their family members.

I see it’s a strong cultural thing

here to help your parents and

relatives in all spheres of life. Back

home we sometimes forget what’s

the concept of the Family. Here in

China I’m always amazed by those

who put themselves aside for the

sake of parents’ wellness. Extremely

important thing to learn for us!

COCKTAIL BARS

TOO GOOD NOT

TO SHARE

By Mark Hsueh

We all get a little bored

of routine, the same

places, with the same

faces. It can all get a

little bit old, and sometimes we

just want to hide away from the

world. So we’ve compiled some of

our top selection of hidden bars

that also happen to make some

of the best cocktails in town.

Feel free to peruse the menus at

each establishment, but since

you’re already on an adventure

I recommend branching out and

trusting in the expertise of the

bartenders. The unique thing about

each of the following selections

is the cocktail mixologists that

have clearly dedicated serious

time to the craft of cocktails.

Store 101. Hangshi Dacangqian Station.

余 杭 区 高 教 路 赛 银 国 际 广 场 6 号 楼 101

1

This tucked away gem is perfect for patrons

situated out west near the Alibaba campus.

Designed for the luxe IT crowd, the

bartenders here don’t offer a cocktail

menu so much as they are the

cocktail menu. Tell the bartender

your preferred flavour profile and

trust in their expansive knowledge

to craft a unique and novel

combination specifically for you.

After a long hot day, I was in the mood for

something refreshing with a kick. Instead

of handing me a menu, the bartender dug

deeper and asked about my preferred

flavour and taste profiles. It’s always such

a joy to come across experts who take the

time with their patrons to customise an

order from their expansive knowledge. I

responded with something sweet and off

he went to whip up a refreshing variation of

a Negroni. Splendid!

Situated in the heart of the Xixi Wetlands

is the Alibaba owned 2100 Club. A swanky

yet elegant spot surrounded by the

trees, water, and peaceful serenity of the

Wetlands nature reserve. With both indoor

and outdoor seating 2100 is a great way to

enjoy a laid back cocktail while basking in

the summer sun.

For all the times I’ve visited 2100 I’ve never

once looked at the menu and instead left

my taste buds in the very capable hands of

the staff. Last time my friend was treated to

a delightful concoction based around her

favourite seasonal fruit, strawberry. We still

have no idea what the drink actually was,

but it was pink and did not last long in her

eager hands. I really appreciate how they

base many of their items around the season,

keeping things fresh, unpredictable, and

natural.

CROSSROADS

WHISKY BAR

Xiachengqu Yananlu No, 468. Near Fengqi Rd

Station. Fengqi Rd Station.

下 城 区 延 安 路 468 号 1 号 楼 1 号 门 102 室

5

Moving to downtown Hangzhou is the

hidden speakeasy, Crossroads Whisky and

Cocktail bar. Paying homage to prohibition

era speakeasies of old, the storefront

displays esoteric antiques and collectibles

while the bar is hidden behind a trapdoor

unlocked by a giant key. The interior also

doesn’t disappoint with its French decor

and Christmas tree (because why not?).

Further adding to the theme is the cocktail

menu - hidden away as pages inside

classic novels, such as Pride and Prejudice.

We ordered the Oriental Ave - a fresh gin

concoction with lemon grass and longan

honey; and my drink which I didn’t note

the name of but was a sugary sweet delight

served with a raisin biscuit and popping

candy. Yes, you read that right, popping

candy. A fun dessert experience to cap

things off after a heavy meal.

CHILL

Shangchengqu Zhongsanzhonglu No. 295.

Dingan Rd Station.

中 山 中 路 295 号

Hidden behind a sliding painting,

Chill captured me immediately

with its Pokemon memorabilia

in the entrance way. It got

my little geeky gears

working and I was amped

to see what other they

surprises they had in

store. They did not

disappoint with

a free arcade

cabinet in the

backroom

to help

me relive

my 90s

childhood.

4

LANJING

Xiachengqu Xiaofenglu No. 5 Wulinlinei.

Fengqi Rd Station.

下 城 区 孝 丰 路 5 号 武 林 里 内

Heavily inspired by Harry Potter,

the sign for Lanjing even looks

like a piece ripped from the

Marauder’s Map. Tucked away in a

small courtyard you’ll immediately

recognise it by the armoured

knights guarding the entrance.

Don’t get confused by the bookshelf

entrance way that hides the lush

bar inside either. Follow the short

corridor to find a cocktail bar with

hanging plants, shelves filled with

books, and staff decked out like

members of a Quidditch team.

While I only ordered a Caprioska,

I was so excited to see it listed on

the menu. It was served in a copper

cup and was refreshingly icy and

lime-y, exactly how I wanted it. And

much like the bar itself, finding a

Caprioska on the menu in China can

be a journey in of itself.

The mad geniuses at Chill certainly aren’t

afraid to walk their own path and the

cocktail menu is a testament to that. I

started with the signature drink aptly

named Chill - a rum based, chilli, cucumber,

and lime juice cocktail, a perfect start to

whet the taste buds. I followed that with

a crazy little gin based minty basil frappelike

floral cocktail. While no one else at the

table was a fan, I quickly grew fond of the

strangeness. It’s a must try. Be brave.

XANADU

Zhongshanzhonglu No. 225. Dingan Rd Station.

中 山 中 路 255 号

This fantastic bar was almost too hidden!

We spent a good 15 odd minutes trying to

figure out how to open the entrance. Here’s

a pro-tip: you’ll know you’re at the right

spot when you see a single arcade cabinet

sitting in the corner of a little alcove

tucked down a quiet alleyway. Like a good

escape room, it only gets trickier from

there. That description alone should give

you an indication of the level of thought

6

and devotion this establishment has

toward providing a uniquely memorable

experience.

I knew it was going to be a great night

when the head bartender jumped to

the rescue and became our personal

caretaker when the bar didn’t have the

ginger ale to make the dark n’ stormy I

ordered. He instead crafted a Chinese

variation using traditional Chinese herbs.

Inspired and novel, it was something

only made possible by bartenders

with knowledge of a wide gamut of

flavour combinations and creativity.

7

SPY & SMUGGLER

Huanchengbeilu No. 208 Kunhezhongxin

Dixia Yicheng A20. Wulin Guangchang

Station.

环 城 北 路 208 号 坤 和 中 心 地 下 一

层 A20

Located next to the Grand Canal,

Spy & Smuggler oozes relaxed

elegance. From the high end antique

Chinese sculpture and wood carving

store ‘front’, the bar really relishes

its historical Taiwan roots. From the

newspaper-styled menu, to the

tapas on offer, it’s all very Taiwanese.

Even the bar manager was

especially headhunted from Taiwan.

I was presented with the Bee’s

Knees, a combination of gin,

chrysanthemum honey, egg white,

and lemon. Wow. Not only does Spy

& Smuggler have some ingenious

recipes, the cocktails can’t be made

anywhere else due to their use

of homemade sauces, garnishes,

and syrups. It’s not often when an

establishment can truly stand by

their claims of being one-of-a-kind,

but Spy & Smuggler proudly can.

8

JOY BAR

Xihuqu Huaxinglu No. 2-1.

西 湖 区 华 星 路 2-1 号

Just around the corner from the infamous

9-Bar, Joy Bar lies inconspicuously along

a quiet residential street among a small

selection of storefronts and would be easily

missed if not for the big shining “Joy Bar”

sign above the door. Actually part of a

chain, Joy Bar is surprisingly understated

and boasts a large cocktail selection,

ranging from signature Joy Bar exclusives

to classics such as an Old Fashioned (which

I ordered).

Maybe it had something to do with

the simple refinement of the Joy Bar

atmosphere, but the Old Fashioned seemed

to go down extra smooth. I really appreciate

when bars use actual sugar cubes for their

Old Fashioned. Extra bonus points for

filtering the sugar through a napkin too.

It’s the little touches like those that really

highlight Joy Bar’s refined craftsmanship.

GET AWAY

WITHOUT

GOING

TOO FAR

THINGS TO DO AND

SEE IN HANGZHOU

By Firieba Sarwarzadah

After seemingly reaching the coat-tail ends of

the world-shifting pandemic, it is safe to say one

valuable lesson was gained from this horrendous

experience: that is, to make the most of the life we

have, and enjoy it by the day.

That being said, after remaining

locked up for those four odd months

and slowly seeing the world shift

back into its new normal, we deserve

a pat on the back for surviving and keeping

the panic rate at a relative low here in

Hangzhou.

Now that we are back with full force and

vengeance, we wanted to share some

awesome experiences the city has to offer

and pulled through for great group events

and getaways!

To continue to err on the safe side (did we

mention we meant a more cautious full

force?) let us look at a few side trip options

that will either keep you home, or not

too far from home. Also, let’s try to avoid

any limitations or stoppages in our travel

journeys.

There are several travel tour companies in

the city that make it their goal to ensure

locals and expats alike are able to see the

hidden beauties of Hangzhou. Catering

to unique cultural experiences of the city,

TrendyAdventurer (TA) is one of those

companies. But how has inbound tourism

been affected due to the pandemic, since

most is still on lockdown?

One factor is the mode of transportation,

says Jason from TrendyAdventurer.

“Domestic tourism has picked up a bit since

it was suspended for over four months.

Compared with cross-provincial tourism,

people prefer to take side trips,” he says.

“People prefer to travel by car or in private

tours, rather than group tours.”

Side trips are an all too common feat for

Chinese life, considering many tourist

attractions scattered throughout the nation.

From mountain climbing, hiking, or biking

tours, the country has many scenic views

to soak in. For us in Hangzhou, there are

no shortages of these experiences, such as

a two-day meditation trip to the Buddhist

Temple in Baizhang Village organized last

month by TA.

As one of the seven ancient capitals of

China, Hangzhou is known mostly for

its handcraft experiences. “Zen Temple

Meditations, bamboo flute making,

city walks, Qipao Experiences, and tea

experiences,” says Jason. All of which are

unique and special to the City of Lakes.

So, what will the future of tourism look like

within the city and country? Jason has some

high hopes. “We hope inbound tourism can

be reopened soon, and I hope the industry

can be more regulated and have better

control over illegal operations.” His one

piece of advice when looking for a travel

company? “Please find a licensed and legal

company to travel with.”

Our friends at TrendyAdventurer have a few

events lined up, so take a look at some ideas

when planning your next getaway without

getting too far away from the city.

Don’t miss the tea mountains of Hangzhou,

comparable to what you might find

famously in places like Bali. Take the journey

to pick your own tea and get an authentic

experience like no other.

3. QIANDAO

‘THOUSAND

ISLAND’ LAKE

Surrounded by the beautiful clear lake,

mountains, and open sky, the ‘Thousand

Island’ Lake makes for a lovely mini trip!

Take your e-bike or old-fashioned bicycle

for a scenic route through the path and let

yourself soak in the natural pleasures.

1. TOP 4 TEMPLES

IN HANGZHOU

Of the 4 temples, 3 are located on Tianzhu

road, known as the Tianzhu Three Temples,

or Tianzhu San Si ( 天 竺 三 寺 .) The Upper

Tianzhu Dharma Joy, Middle Tianzhu

Dharma Purity, and Lower Tianzhu Dharma

Reflection, also respectively named Faxi

Temple( 法 喜 寺 ), Fajing Temple( 法 净 寺 )

and Fajing Temple( 法 镜 寺 ).

The Dharma Joy Temple is surrounded by a

cultural outdoor market, filled with trinkets,

charms, and other goods. This tends to draw

in a younger demographic and is known

as one of the more popular temples in the

area.

The Dharma Purity Temple may not be filled

with any gimmicks or extra features but is

definitely worth the visit for much needed

clarity and restoration.

The last of the Tianzhu Three is also the

oldest, The Dharma Reflection is also the

only nunnery in the region!

The 4th, the Lingyin Temple (Temple of

the Souls Retreat 灵 隐 寺 ) is the must-see

temple in Hangzhou, as the oldest Buddhist

monastery in all of China, and one of the

ten Buddhist temples in all the mainland.

The Lingyin temple is surrounded by unique

sights, such as the bamboo forest, and the

Buddha stone grotto caves.

All four temples are within proximity to

each other, so you can definitely visit all four

during a weekend.

2. WEST LAKE

LONGJING

‘DRAGONWELL’

TEA MOUNTAIN

4. FENGYANG

MOUNTAIN IN

BAISHANZU

Why not challenge yourself to conquer

the feat of reaching the top of the tallest

mountain peak in all of Jiangsu, Shanghai,

and Zhejiang province? That’s 1,800 metres

of pure up-hill cardio.

5. WUZHEN WATER

TOWN

Take a ride through Wuzhen Water Town,

also known as A Land of Fish and Rice. With

the famous Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal

running through the town, it’s divided into

four scenic sections, with plenty to see and

do. You’ll see beautiful stone architecture

like bridges and alleyways, visit folk shows,

or take rides along the canal. Lit up at

night, the town looks like a whimsical water

wonderland.

With some great ideas, and beautiful

destinations, we hope you can seize the day

and experience the wonder that Hangzhou

has to offer. For more information, tours,

and destination ideas, be sure to get in

touch with TrendyAdventurer or visit

Happy traveling, Hangzhonians!

SUMMER

TRIP

IDEAS

DESTINATIONS IN ZHEJIANG

PROVINCE SUGGESTED

BY ETRAVEL CLUB

By Camilla Fatticcioni

Travelling in China is a

never-ending discovery,

and even in Zhejiang

province, there are many

exciting trip options to

explore. What I love about

this province is the wide

range of small-town and

stunning hiking trails you

can discover, avoiding the

most touristic spots. Still,

organising a trip can be

hard, especially for those

new to China, or who are

still not well accustomed

to the Chinese language. In

Hangzhou, travel agencies

such as Etravel club help

expats have the best

experience in the Zhejiang

region and all over China.

14 myredstar.com

广 告 • 生 活 方 式 // LIFESTYLE /

I

have been following the Etravel WeChat

account for inspiration – everything

from relaxing resort getaways to

adventurous excursions.

ETravel organizes weekend gateways

around Hangzhou, long trips all over China,

family trips, and private tours. Let's take a

look at some of the best options suggested

by the club for summer holidays in the

Zhejiang region.

FUN

TRIP TO THE SONGYANG COUNTY

VILLAGE AND WATERPARK

A two-day trip to Zhejiang province’s

best waterpark, perfect for a relaxing

weekend with friends and family. Day one

is dedicated to visiting a unique ancient

village in Songyang county. During the

Qing dynasty (1644-1912), this village was

rigorously laid out by traditional astrological

layouts and contained the philosophical

idea of "the unity of man and nature" in

Taoism. The whole town is tightly integrated

with natural feng shui. It is possible to stay

in one of the beautiful guesthouses at the

top mountain village in Songyang county.

Day two is dedicated to having fun in the

nearby waterpark.

CAMP

GREAT WALL & ANCIENT

TOWN & CAMP + SUNRISE

Did you know you can visit the Great Wall

in Zhejiang? There's no need to travel to

Beijing to see this World Wonder; you can

visit one of the southern-most sections,

the Jiangnan Great Wall, in Linhai. Linhai

City is in eastern Zhejiang Province and it

is a city full of culture and history. During

a two-day trip, you can visit the old part

of the town, Ziyang Old Street, a historic

section of the city with several shops and

restored buildings. It's an excellent example

of traditional architecture from Zhejiang

province, and the street is pretty long and

goes on for a few blocks. You can choose

to spend the night in a tent, camping on

one of the nearby mountains to admire the

sunrise in the morning, before starting a

day-long visit to the Jiangnan Great Wall.

VIEW

ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL

RICE TERRACES

Yunhe Rice Terraces are located in Li Shui,

a prefecture-level city in the southwest

of Zhejiang province. Yunhe means

"peaceful clouds" in Chinese. Yunhe and

its surrounding rice terraces have been

home to farmers for at least 1,000 years.

The altitude of the terraces ranges from

200 to 1,400 metres, which gives Yunhe

Rice Terraces fantastic scenery. View

of the Rice Terraces is a pretty sight for

photography and many photographers

come here to take great photos. Get your

camera ready for some fantastic pictures!

The unique geographical environment

of Yunhe Rice Terraces created a unique

natural landscape of it. At sunrise, the sky is

filled with a red rolling cloud, with a vague

shadow of trees underground. Standing

upon a rice terrace makes you feel like

entering paradise. The local people living

here are mostly the She ethnic group, a

minority with a tiny population in China.

You can take a look around those small

villages and learn about and experience the

culture and customs of the ethnic group.

CHALLENGE

SUSPENDED CRACKING

GLASS BRIDGE

If you are not afraid of heights this one’s for

you - the Suspended Glass Bridge hangs

nearly 288 metres above the valley floor!

Each glass panel is 3.5m long and 2.5 wide,

which gives a fantastic view of the valley

below. An adventurous option for one day

trip away from the city.

VILLAGE

GONGYU "SHANGRI-

LA OF THE EAST."

This holiday is all about leaving the city

behind and enjoying ourselves in a lost but

beautiful land. GongYu village is located

near the Xianju, Zhejiang province. GongYu

is also known as the "Shangri-la Of The East"!

You can experience beautiful camping,

and a hiking experience merged in the

delicate nature of Zhejiang, surrounded by

mountains formed by volcano explosion

and beautiful rice terrace.

RELAXING

HIKING & DAY TOURING AT

FAMOUS MOGAN MOUNTAIN

Mogan Mountain is a mountain located

in Deqing County, Zhejiang, China, 60km

from the provincial capital Hangzhou.

Known for its cool temperatures during

the region's scorching summers, it has

long been the destination of many tourists

during the summer season. Home to a

sea of bamboo, star-studded villas, and

charming scenery in all four seasons,

Mogan Mountain has been named "The

First Mountain In The South of China."

There is an array of different sightseeing

routes for walking or bike riding. On both

sides of the roads are bamboo forests,

streams, and dozens of varying singing

birds. You can hike through mysterious

bamboo forests, search out hidden streams,

learn more about the local yellow tea,

and enjoy the natural Zhejiang beauty.

NOODLE

TIME

FROM FLOUR TO

DELICIOUS NOODLES,

HOW THEY ARE MADE

By Eleonora Bollini

Pictures by Eleonora Bollini

It is late, you’ve been busy all day and you’re starving,

but your phone is out of battery and you only have a

little cash, what can you do? One solution could be to

go into the first store you find and eat instant noodles!

The world’s largest manufacturer of

instant noodles has their factory in

Hangzhou. Their first product was

launched 28 years ago, in 1992 and

their most popular product is braised beef

noodles. The brand is 康 師 傅 , for them “your

dreams are ingredients”.

The main principle of this brand regards

food safety, especially in the tragic period

the world is living in right now. They pay

a lot of attention to the whole production

process to maintain the safety not only of

the food but also of consumers and workers.

Now, it could be interesting to see how

these delicious instant noodles are made.

The process begins with the machines

that mix flour with cold water. The dough

does not have to rise, it must maintain the

basic size. The second step is to give the

dough the right shape, here we start seeing

noodles develop, but they are much too

long, that is the reason why, in the third

step, machines will cut them. Now that our

noodles have the perfect shape and ideal

size, they are ready to enter the next area

and be cooked, that is the last step before

packaging. After being closed in packages

and then in boxes, they are ready to leave

and reach different markets. We all know

the next steps, add hot water, wait a few

minutes, and enjoy!

If you are interested in seeing with your

DANCING BLIND

By Mark Hsueh

Super groups, LA Soul Dance Studio

and Hangzhou Goodwill Activists

combined forces to host an uplifting

dance workshop for blind members

of the Hangzhou Blind Association.

Silence swept over the room as the heavy

bass beats of Kizomba music thumped

across the studio.

Thump... Thump... Thump...

The student volunteers gently started stronger emphasis on feel over sight.

tapping the shoulder of their blind partners, Having helped many handicapped patients

with the blind students responding in kind

by gently swaying or tapping their feet.

1… 2… 1… 2…

Before long it became indistinguishable

which students were which, as each dancer

tapped and swayed in time to the music.

“Listen to the beat. Feel the rhythm. Let the

music into your soul.”

THE DANCE

Trust was high as the blind students allowed

themselves to be led and guided; side to side,

forwards and back, round and round, until they

became comfortable enough to let go and

follow the lead of their partners. Their joy was

palpable and the enthusiasm evident in the

laughter and chorus of eager responses when

asked how things were going. By the end of

the class the students had learnt a variety of

steps and danced with various partners for

well over 90 minutes. Not that they cared,

they only wanted to keep dancing.

Emotions were sky-high, with many of the

blind students gushing about how much

the event had meant for them, with some

even expressing how they had dreamt of

learning to dance but never had the chance

until today. My dance partner opened up to

me at one point to tell me about how she

had tried solo dancing previously but never

dared to try it with another

person, let alone trying

a partner dance. Many

students even stated they

would continue lessons now

that they’ve had a chance

to experience the joy of

partner dancing.

THE CREATION

The brainchild of LA Soul founder and

teacher, Mike Nice, he knew that Kizomba

would be an excellent style of dance for

the occasion due to its slower pace and

back in LA during his 10+ years as a

psychiatric technician, it was

Mike’s dream to bring that

same humanitarian spirit

to his dance studio here in

Hangzhou.

When asked what motivated Mike to create

such an event he said it was about the sense

of fulfillment, to be able to assist people

through the frustrations in finally achieving

huge breakthroughs in their everyday

lives that many people normally take for

granted. And holding charity classes for

the handicapped and disabled had been a

dream since the founding of LA Soul.

However, without the right connections his

dream was unfortunately placed on hold.

That was until he mentioned the idea to

his dance student, Alexander Conley, who

recently founded the humanitarian group,

Hangzhou Goodwill Activists. A quick

conversation later and the pieces of the

puzzle quickly fell into place, with Mike’s

dream becoming a reality.

THE GOODWILL ACTIVISTS

The Hangzhou Goodwill Activists (HGA)

is a humanitarian vision brought to life

by Alexander Conley, who first formed

the group late last year to help support a

children’s hospital Christmas event. The

group quickly expanded and before long

Alex discovered that “there

aren’t many volunteer

opportunities here, and

there’s a lot of good hearts

out there, they just needed

somewhere to put them.”

Having spent many years

doing volunteer work back home, it was

only a matter of time before Alex would

get himself involved in humanitarian work

here. Unable to find an outlet to express

his goodwill, he decided to take matters

into his own hands and create his own

humanitarian group, with the aim to, “bring

hearts together and make the world a

better place”.

There was obviously a

big need as things for

the group have quickly

steamrolled into organising

and co-hosting multiple

humanitarian efforts; from women’s rights

presentations, the aforementioned dancing

workshop for the blind, and many other

charity drives. It’s fair to say that Alex has

created a trusted outlet for everyday people

to show their love, humanity, and goodwill.

HANGZHOU’S

VERY OWN PIG CAFÉ

During these strange, stressful

and restrictive times, finding a

fun affordable experience can be

challenging. Happily, Hangzhou

has numerous options and one of

the most unique is the Pig Café!

By Alex Hennekens

Photos by Annie Clover

One of the first

challenges is actually

finding the place! Located in a

nondescript office building, one

would be fooled into thinking that you've

walked onto the wrong floor in the wrong

building. For those visiting who don't speak

Chinese, it will help if you have the address

with you – show a security guard and they

will point you to the correct building.

Upon arrival, you will notice a simple clean

interior with a nice coffee bar serving tea,

juice and an assortment of soft drinks. On

the wall it becomes very clear that

you are indeed at pig cafe as

it dons plastic pigs of all

shapes and sizes.

The main attraction

is of course the ten

cute black & white

piglets!

You can wrap them up

in blankets and watch

them doze off whilst you

stroke their little wet noses.

Upon arrival you are given a free

sample of cabbage and carrots which are

popular with the more mature pigs to say

the least. Feeding them is a chaotic yet

pleasing experience, although it should

be noted that some pigs are pushier than

others and will wrestle and hassle you for

the best bits of food.

The cost is RMB 60 per person which

includes a drink of your choice, and

unlimited time playing with the pigs.

As opposed to cat cafes it is open to all

ages, so you don’t have to worried about

disappointing your children.

The space where the pigs are is very simple,

with bean bags dotted on the floor, and

a bench for those who prefer to sit a little

higher. As opposed to most pigs, these ones

do not live in a pig sty, as the floors are kept

immaculately clean. The pigs are trained to

go to do their business in a specific area, so

you don't have to watch your step or where

you want to sit. Thankfully when I went it

wasn't very busy and there was more than

enough space to sit comfortably.

If you are having a stressful day, or just want

to experience something different I highly

recommend an hour or two of piggy fun time!

THE HIDDEN MEANING

of

PEACHES

IN CHINESE MYTHOLOGY

By Camilla Fatticcioni

In summer, most of the markets have the

unmistakable scent of peaches, inviting

shoppers to buy this delicious fruit. The

fuzziness of the skin, the fruit's juicy

texture, and especially how the taste lingers

on your lips long after you've finished

eating a peach, are all good reasons to

love this summer fruit. Peaches have

been cultivated since the early days of

Chinese culture. Recent evidence

indicates that peach

domestication

occurred as early as

6000 BC in Zhejiang

Province of China. Of

all shapes and colours,

peaches are a fruit highly

appreciated in China,

not only for their sweet

taste but also for their

hidden meaning in Chinese

mythology. Peaches play an

essential role in Chinese

mythology and history:

they were said to

have magical

powers, and they

are mentioned

in many ancient

pieces of Chinese

literature and art.

/ CULTURE // 广 告 • 文 化

IN MYTHOLOGY

Peaches of Immortality are used in

Chinese traditional medicine as a cure

for several diseases, are used to treat

lungs and kernels and are prescribed for

coughs and rheumatism. Peach flowers

are used as laxatives, and peach wood was

considered sacred and used as a charm

against evil spirits. Maybe it is mainly for its

curative properties that this fruit has been

associated with immortality and longevity

since ancient times.

Peaches of immortality, as their name

suggests, are believed to confer immortality

onto those who ate them. These peaches

are said to grow in an orchard belonging to

the Queen Mother of the West, a goddess

in Chinese mythology. According to legend,

the Queen Mother of the West resides in the

mythological Kunlun Mountains and has

more than 3,600 peach trees in her orchards.

The Queen Mother of the West ensured the

deities' everlasting existence by feeding

them the Peaches of Immortality. The

immortals residing in her palace were said to

celebrate an extravagant banquet called the

‘Feast of Peaches’. According to the legend,

the immortals wait six thousand years

before gathering for this magnificent feast;

the peach tree put forth leaves once every

thousand years, and it required another

three thousand years for the fruit to ripen.

IN LITERATURE

The peach is a significant item featured

within the famous Chinese fantasy novel

Journey to the West 西 游 记 , xī yóu jì). Sun

Wukong, the iconic monkey protagonist of

the novel, is the protector of the Immortal

Peaches. As he discovered the legendary

effects of the Immortal Peaches, (over 3,000

years of life after eating a single fruit), he

decided to steal one, which led to many

troubles for him.

Immortal Peaches often occur in Chinese

legends, such as the ones related to the

great emperor Wu (157 BC –87 BC) of the

great Han dynasty (202 BC – 220 AD). Many

legends celebrate an imaginary meeting

between Emperor Wu of Han and the Queen

Mother of the West, offering an Immortal

Peach to him.

Peach Blossom Spring ( 桃 花 源 táo huā

yuán) is a story written by the famous

Chinese poet Tao Yuanming (365–427). In

the story, a fisherman reaches an ethereal

village located in a grove of blossoming

peach trees and witnesses the villagers

living without being aware of the passage

of time or the pressures of the world.

IN CHINESE ART

Peaches, conveying wishes for longevity

and good fortune, are a perfect decorative

motif for a birthday present. The pursuit

of longevity has played an unusually

notable role in China. Societal respect for

the elderly, a general Confucian value,

and the individual's search for longevity

or immortality, a Daoist concern, have

resulted in a preoccupation with long life

reflected in the visual arts. By the time

of the Ming dynasty (1368–1644) and

Qing dynasty (1644–1911), specific motifs

and stories associated with long life had

become fundamental themes in paintings,

garments, and in the decorative arts

that were appropriate as gifts, dress, and

furnishings for occasions such as birthday

and retirement celebrations. Even without

the physical presence of the mythological

figure of the Queen Mother of the West

or other immortals, the representation of

peaches has a strong link to longevity.

The peach is seen in drinking cups,

decorative vases, and even in scholars'

objects such as ink tablets. Patterns of

blossoming peach branches and trees

evoke the peach orchard of the Queen

Mother of the West and the story of the

peach blossom spring.

HOW THE

‘CORONAVIRUS

RECESSION’

HAS IMPACTED

RECRUITMENT

IN CHINA

By Firieba Sarwarzadah

However old or young, we’ve all had

our run of playing the desperate

job seeker. If you are lucky

enough to be currently employed

in a (hopefully comfortable) position,

nightmarish flashback of endless rejections

is a common, and annoying occurrence.

If you are currently seeking a job, this

is in fact a daily and familiar reminder.

For today’s job seeker in Hangzhou,

they may be feeling an amplified effect

of this, made worse and multiplied by

the aftermath of what’s been deemed

worldwide as the ‘coronavirus recession.’

Finding employment is hard at any time

but living through the situation that we

found ourselves in as expats in China

added to the challenge all the more. The

months long closed entry to foreigners

into the country - even those with

existing work visas added the cherry on

top to the already chaotic situation.

Companies were forced to cut down

on workers and other expenses,

while others were trapped in the

unfortunate predicament to shut down

indefinitely due to the lack of income.

I had the chance to interview Leo, the

founder of the recruiting company

HelloCareer, a staple in the job market

in China for years. They were able to

observe the effects firsthand and verified

that many companies took a heavy hit

26 myredstar.com

广 告 • 商 务 // BUSINESS /

EXPAT

DEMOGRAPHIC

Unsurprisingly, most expatriates

are to be found in China’s firsttier

cities and its developed

coastal region. The high number

of Vietnamese and Burmese

nationals in China explains the

inclusion of Yunnan and Guangxi.

More surprising is the comparative

lack of Russian expats, who did

not make the Top 10 - nor was the

China-Russia border included in

the Top 10 most popular regions.

As for industries, according to a

survey conducted by The Guardian,

85% of expats work at international

firms, with the top three sectors

being sales and marketing

(30%), banking and finance

(25%) and engineering (15%).

and were forced to shut down, or plan

their next steps more carefully: “On the

whole, companies have chosen the

most cautious attitude in recruitment,

and they have chosen to suspend

recruitment for important positions that

are not mandatory. Some companies

even choose to lay off staff in order to

save costs, and some companies have

broken their capital chains, and eventually

have no choice but to close down.”

As China had a head start to pick up and

manage the majority bulk of the situation,

the rest of the world was just beginning

to get hit with the coronavirus recession.

While the job market in the rest of the

world dipped, the Chinese market was

eagerly and desperately looking for foreign

talents to fill up left-over or abandoned

positions - specifically in the education

sector. Though the education sector has

always been key in the majority recruitment

of foreigners, Leo says he’s seen some

changes to the kind of opportunities

available: “There are more and more

opportunities in non-culture and education.

This is mainly due to the increasing pace

of globalization of enterprises in different

industries in China. Not only with worldclass

enterprises such as Huawei, Lenovo,

Alibaba, and Tencent, but also ByteDance,

XIAOMI, JD.com, DJI, Trip.com and large

numbers of other Chinese companies who

have entered the global perspective. They

also need to hire international talent.”

Despite the unfortunate situation it

presented for those foreign nationals

who had left the country before the

worst of the pandemic hit, it might

have presented a slight advantage to

those who remained in the country. Leo

offers insight to what the job market is

looking like presently for those in China:

“…companies still in need of recruiting

foreign talents have given up recruiting

candidates who are currently overseas, but

will consider foreign candidates currently

in China. Therefore, there are still many

opportunities for expatriates in China

if there is a demand for job search.”

What’s his expert advice for foreigners who

are currently job seeking and have remained

in China? “…the opportunities are now

greater. Moreover, many companies will

also appropriately reduce the recruitment

requirements due to the epidemic

situation and the talent market situation,

so it is recommended that you seize the

opportunities that are open in the market.”

He further advises to take advantage of

companies who are seeking from a much

smaller recruiting pool then before.

Although we’ve seen a complete global

transition to overseas employment and

economy, this also serves as another

storm we are meant to weather. There may

be changes and effects, but inevitably

the world will pick up and resume to

what should be considered the new

normal. With the start of international

flights slowly resuming from China, as

well as some specific cases of foreigners

being allowed back into the country.

With time, we should see borders

open again, but, as Leo emphasizes,

it is important to remain hopeful.

“For job seekers who are currently overseas

and wish to return to China, do not give

up. Under all conditions are appropriate,

some companies will consider allowing

employees to work remotely, and then apply

for entry and visa procedures after they can

come to China. Therefore, you can still fight

for opportunities that you like very much.”

THE ART OF

CRAFT BEER

KEESMANN GERMAN

BREWERY

By Rodrigo Ocaranza

I

had the chance to visit

Hangzhou’s Keesmann brewery

and try some amazing German

fresh draught beer right out of

the tap. There, I had the pleasure

to talk to its owner, Jonas Chen, a

German entrepreneur, businessman,

university teacher and musician

that has lived in Hangzhou for

more the 10 years. If you don’t

find him in his brewery or his

export company, you can find him

teaching international marketing at

Zhejiang university or performing

with his rock band Psych Lips.

WHAT MOTIVATED

YOU TO START YOUR

OWN BREWERY?

I lived in Germany for 13 years and spent

all of them drinking German beer and

being in direct contact with the country’s

beer culture. By the time I came back to

Hangzhou, I could not find any local place

where to drink fresh and real German

draught beer.

In the city I did find a brewery, but they

always added other flavours to the beer, like

strawberries or other fruits, these drinks I

really can’t define them as real beer, they are

just beer flavoured drinks which I personally

don’t fancy.

In Germany there is a law on how to make

beer, in its definition a beer is just wheat,

yeast and water, you cannot put in anything

else, or it would be illegal to call it beer.

Do not take me wrong, there is good craft

28 myredstar.com

广 告 • 人 物 // IN PERSON /

beer in Hangzhou, I simply have not found

any German recipe here in the city, any

‘legal’ German beer. On my personal level

I associate the taste of German craft beer

with my experience in Germany.

This is the reason why this situation

generated inside me the crave and the

pursuit of, someday, making my very own

draught beer.

I kept this thought with me for a long time,

until I asked myself “Why do not do it in

Hangzhou?”. Ten years later I found my

associate, who had a real German brewery

operating in Beijing and, together we have

just opened a new one in Hangzhou, only

one year ago. It was quite a struggle to find

the appropriate location and to obtain all

the Government permits, especially the

environmental license and equipment, but

at the end we overcame all the obstacles.

Today we have 50 containers ready to

ferment and we can produce 100 tons at the

same time and 100,000 litres in total. Beer

should be a local business, even if quality

beer is made, for example, in Qingdao, it

cannot be delivered fresh to Hangzhou.

WHAT IS YOUR TARGET?

With around 10 million people living in

Hangzhou. I want to let them know that

there is a real German beer here, in this city

and that our first focus is the quality. The

business comes after. Our target consumers

won’t be 10 million people, it will be a small

group of people who love to drink beer

in summer and who do not want to taste

the same major brands, like Harbin beer,

or Tsingtao beer. People that want to try

something new, local and fresh.

We don’t have a brand name, just a factory

name, so restaurants and small breweries are

welcome to make their own branding with

us and we can provide and supply for them.

WHY IS YOUR FACTORY

NAMED KEESMANN?

Keesmann is a city in Germany, filled with

lots of breweries and it is also the name

of a famous brewery with 300 years of

tradition and famous for its old-fashioned

style. I consider myself the only one merely

focused on producing German good quality

beer in Hangzhou, and I will let you know

that we have our own secret recipe.

There is something very

special about our yeast

that no other breweries

have, we import it

straight from Germany

and add a secret factor

which makes a great

difference in the taste

that you will notice as

soon as you take the

first sip of your beer.

Keeping our standards

high is something really important for

us. We simply don’t rush or interrupt the

fermenting process until the whole process

is done, we stop, we take the time that is

necessary very seriously to attain the best

possible quality.

Despite the time restraints, the capacity

of our infrastructure can sustain mass

production of quality beer so, if you ever

wonder how it feels to swim on beer or

have a beer shower give us a call. Nowadays

Hangzhou city is growing like never before

and people are more

inclined to experience new

things, despite the restraints

due to the virus, people in

the city can have a direct

taste of real German beer

right on their doorstep.

WHAT IS YOUR

COMPANY’S

PHILOSOPHY?

We see Keesmann Brewery as something

more than a factory or producing

beer. It is about finding new ways of

bringing people together, experiencing

new horizons and sharing the German

beer culture with a quality product

with the people of Hangzhou.

BHUTAN:

AN ALTERNATIVE

SHANGRI-LA

By Maria Belfort Henriques

Tucked away in the remote Himalayan wilderness, the

kingdom of Bhutan is a hidden sanctuary. Self-contained

and under the mainstream radar, it’s an ideal place to go

to escape the troubles of the world, especially after such

a turbulent year. Though many of us have recently spent

a lot more time at home, it hasn’t been a holiday, and

there’s a longing for the kind of rejuvenating headspace

that Bhutan has to offer.

广 告 • 旅 游 // TRAVEL /

With sustainability literally

written into its constitution,

and firm regulations protecting

it from over-tourism, Bhutan

is a wild, enigmatic destination that’s all

about slowing down, engaging with the

landscape, and leaving the stress of city life

at the border. That dream of ‘getting away

from it all’ is a familiar one, and especially

tempting for families hoping to share

adventures with their growing teens before

they fly the nest.

In Bhutan, the whole concept of luxury

takes on a deeper meaning. Instead of the

opulent glitz of skybars and penthouses,

you’ll find outstanding provision for holistic

wellness. The country’s premium hotels

are unique, immersive retreats where

you can unwind body and mind. Each

one is a true cut above, with gorgeous

interiors framing forested mountains

and crisp skies through sweeping glass

walls. There’s the rare sensation of being

comprehensively cared for, and ‘held’

within the landscape’s natural safety.

At the elegant Bhutan Spirit Sanctuary,

just outside Paro, every space is clear and

open. Daily meditation classes, yoga and

traditional treatments help you breathe

more deeply, while farm-to-fork dining

celebrates local dishes and ingredients at

their finest. Gangtey Lodge in Phobjikha

offers morning meditation followed by

breakfast at a nearby monastery and,

from October to February, the chance

to watch iconic Black-Necked Cranes

swoop down into the valley at sunset.

Trekking into Bhutan’s expansive green

terrain to indulge in some forest bathing

is a must, and there are hikes to suit

different ages and abilities. Embark upon

a challenging but rewarding 6-hour trek to

the legendary Tiger’s Nest monastery, or

camp nearby overnight and drop down to

see those whitewashed walls shimmer at

sunrise. Whether you want to take a gentle

birdwatching stroll, or mountain bike further

into the wilderness, every experience

can be tailored so it’s right for you.

Engaging with different Bhutanese

traditions at the country’s many festivals

shows you more of each region’s culture

and history. These exuberant celebrations

take place all year round, and the calendar is

so full that there’s almost guaranteed to be

one happening somewhere whenever you

visit. Alongside the regionally distinctive

music, masks, dances and dress are frequent

displays of Bhutan’s national sport: archery.

Have a go for yourself, with guidance on

staying focused and keeping the target

in sight, and watch the local experts

showcase their jaw-dropping bow skills.

The eagle-eyed will notice that this landlocked

country is a little lacking in beaches.

If your holiday just isn’t complete without

some sand and surf, Bhutan is a compelling

destination to pair with Sri Lanka, the

Andaman Islands or the Maldives where

you can get a good dose of the coast.

There are a few administrative hoops to

jump through before visiting Bhutan, but

you can leave all that to us while you dream

of hot stone baths and rarefied air... Though

you’ll likely have to wait until 2021 to visit,

Bhutan is more than worth the effort and

cost. This is a country that values more

than just the bottom line, as shown in its

famously alternative method of measuring

success: Gross National Happiness. And who

SONG CHENG:

A DIP BACK IN TIME

By Maddalena Depalo

Have you ever wondered how

ancient China was? The China

seen in movies like Mulan, the

China of emperors, beautiful

women and warriors; the China

seen in paintings where the

sleeves of women's clothes

go all the way to the ground,

hiding their hands. If you've

ever wondered what China was

like in the past, you don’t need

to study a hundred pages, just

come to Song Cheng Park!

Song Cheng, the first large-scale

theme park of Hangzhou, is

located in Zhijiang Road ( 杭 州 市

之 江 路 148 号 ), within Hangzhou

Zhijiang Tourist Resort ( 杭 州 之 江 旅 游

度 假 区 ). Song Cheng is an imitation

of the Song Dynasty’s city, based on

a study of the Northern Song Dynasty

painters. And even though they started

building it in 1996, it is still one of the

masterpieces of the city’s attractions.

Streets, houses, bridges, shops and

so on, everything is reproduced in

the style of that time. In Song Cheng

you will find different attractions,

but also many performing art shows,

such as live drama and live-action

war drama. When you go there it

feels like you really go back in time.

Overall, 宋 城 千 古 情 (sòng chéng qiān gǔ

qíng) is the most famous drama show

of the park, it re-produce the Song's

imperial palace splendor together

with the classic stories of Liangzhu's

ancient hardships, Yue's army tragedy

and Liang Zhu and White Snake Xu

Xian. Seventy-two old workshops

( 七 十 二 行 老 作 坊 ) and the Strange

Street ( 怪 街 ) are two other famous

spots. The first one is a rice cake

and wine workshop, a place to learn

about the ancient methods of the

Great Song Dynasty. Strange Street,

on the other hand, got this name

because of the many strange things

happening in every house of the street.

There are many other different

sideshows, such as the so called

"Childishness paradise” ( 童 心 乐 园 ) a

place specially created for children.

There you will find a fantastic jungle

adventure landsca-pe with mini cars

and other recreational projects.

Since Hangzhou during the Southern

Song Dynasty was the Buddhist

centre of the Southeast coast of

China, there is also a reproduction

of a temple - the 佛 窟 探 秘 . In the

Cave Temple, visitors will discover

real Buddhist grottoes, with Buddha

statues, lying Buddha, the temple of

wealth, Yuelao temple and Guanyin

Hall, which represent the wonders of

the "Southeast Buddhist country”.

At Song Cheng park there is

something for everyone, theatre,

music, cinema and even a ghost

house. All the family from children to

grown ups will surely enjoy the visit.

If one day is not enough, or if you’re

coming from far away, there is a large

resort hotel adjacent to the park. The

hotel has three different buildings,

each with a different theme recalling

the Tibetan culture, the Lijiang culture

and the seaside landscape. Another

magical place where to immerse

yourself in the Chinese culture.

THE SIMULATION OF WAR

– CHINESE CHESS!

BRIEF GUIDE ON A FAVOURITE CHINESE

FAMILY PASTIME

By Jerry Shen

chess is played on an 8x8 board with

chess pieces played on the square

spaces. Chinese chess is played on

a 9x10 rectangular grid with chess

pieces played on the intersections

of the grid. In the middle of the

Chinese chessboard is one horizontal

line known as the “River”. This river

separates your territory from your

opponent’s territory and only certain

pieces can cross through this river.

Nonetheless, the playing time

for both games is quite similar,

lasting around 10-60 minutes

per game with an average of

around 20 minutes each game.

When I was a teenager, I

would watch my father play

this intricate game on the

computer for hours. The

screen showed a rectangular grid

with different round pieces on top of

it. Chinese calligraphy marked each

round piece and was coloured either

red or black. In the middle of this grid

was a horizontal line which divided

the large square into halves. With the

click of a mouse, he would instruct the

Chinese characters to move in different

ways, eventually leading to the

disappearance of many of these pieces

and a pop-up that said “ 绝 杀 ” which

roughly translates to “Final blow”.

Dad had won the game and at the

same time piqued my interest. After

some brief digging over the internet,

I understood that the game my father

was playing is a favourite Chinese

family pastime – Chinese Chess.

Chinese chess or xìang qí ( 象 棋 ) is a

board game for two players. While

international chess is believed to have

originated in India some time during

280-550 AD, mentions of Chinese

chess appear in ancient texts almost

500 years earlier in 100 BC. Some

researchers believe Chinese chess

was developed in 200 BC by military

generals to model army arrays back

in the Warring States Period (400 –

250 BC). Still, the first description of

the rules of Chinese chess date back

to the Tang Dynasty (618 – 907).

The rules of both games are similar

in terms of objectives, but different

in almost every other way: the

goal of both games is to trap and

checkmate the opponent’s king,

but the fundamental gameplay and

pathway to reach that goal is vastly

different. For example, international

A brief introduction to the

pieces of Chinese Chess:

The King/General or shuaì/jiāng

( 帅 / 将 ) (one piece): The King

or General is the most important

piece. He can move one horizontal

or vertical intersection at a time but

only within a 3x3 grid known as his

“palace”. One important distinction

between the King in Chinese chess

and the King in international chess is

that the opposing Kings in Chinese

chess cannot be on the same

vertical line unless there is at least

one piece in between them. This

serves as an important strategy for

checkmating in Chinese chess.

广 告 • 文 化 // CULTURE /

The Advisors or shì ( 士 / 仕 ) (two

pieces): Unlike the King in international

chess who has a beautiful and

almighty Queen next to him, the

King in Chinese chess has two trusty

advisors on either side of him for his

protection. These two advisors can

only move diagonally and can only stay

within the 3x3 grid of the King’s palace.

The Elephant or xiàng ( 象 / 相 ) (two

pieces): Beside each of the King’s

advisors is an elephant. Elephants

have multiple limitations. They must

move two intersections diagonally

and is only able to do so if no

pieces (friend or foe) are blocking

the first diagonal. This limitation

can be exploited by opponents to

trap and capture your Elephant.

Even more important, the Elephants

can only move on your side of the

river which further limits the piece.

That being said, the Elephant is an

underrated piece and can completely

destroy unsuspecting attackers.

The Horse or mǎ ( 马 ) (two pieces):

Next to each Elephant is a Horse.

Just like in international chess, the

Horses (or “horsies” as my younger

brother likes to call them) in Chinese

chess, can only move in the shape of

an “L”. However, unlike international

chess, Horses in Chinese chess will

have their movements restricted if

there is a piece (friend or foe) in front

of them. The Horse is an important

offensive tool that must be used

carefully when striking an opponent.

The Chariot or jū ( 車 / 俥 ) (two

pieces): The Chariot is arguably the

most important offensive tool in each

player’s arsenal. Chariots are similar to

the rooks in international chess and can

move horizontally and vertically any

number of intersections. They are the

strongest piece and have virtually no

limitations. They can cross the river at

any point and play the most important

role in checkmating opponent Kings.

The Cannon or pào ( 炮 / 砲 ) (two

pieces): The Cannons are my absolute

favourite pieces in Chinese chess and

have no equivalent in international

chess. They can move any number of

intersections both horizontally and

vertically just like the chariot and can

also cross the river. However, what

makes them special is that they can

only capture an opponent’s piece by

“jumping” over another piece (friend

or foe). Whereas the Chariot captures

opponent pieces directly in front, the

Cannon captures opponent pieces that

are behind another piece. This makes

for interesting strategies and the

checkmate of unsuspecting opponents.

The Pawn or bīng ( 兵 / 卒 ) (five

pieces): The five Pawns are on the

frontline of each person’s military.

Similar to the Pawns in international

chess, Pawns in Chinese chess can

only move forward one intersection

vertically. Once they cross the river and

onto the opponent’s side, they also

gain the ability to move horizontally

one intersection. Pawns can never

move backwards and will not promote

to become a stronger piece once they

reach the enemy lines. While they

may seem weak, a Pawn who has

reached the opposing King’s palace

can represent a huge offensive threat.

The one King, two Advisors, two

Elephants, two Horses, two Chariots,

two Cannons and five Pawns make

up the 16 pieces of each side in

Chinese chess. While the pieces

themselves are not difficult to learn,

it is the strategy and intricacies of

how each piece synergizes with

each other that determines the

winner of the match. Just like a war,

thinking many steps ahead of your

opponent is the key to success!

Overall, Chinese chess is a familyfriendly

game and an interesting

alternative to international chess. For

expat families, this may be a great

way to introduce your friends or kids

to some Chinese culture and its rich

history in military and war. Many

Chinese children learn to play Chinese

chess at the young age of five and you

have likely seen many elderly Chinese

people play it on the streets. You can

find many private institutions where

they teach you to play Chinese chess

on 大 众 点 评 and you can also find

further information on the internet.

One of the greatest websites I have

used to learn about Chinese chess

basics and strategies in English is www.

xqinenglish.com. I hope you enjoy

learning the game as much as I did and

I look forward to your foray into this

timeless, classic Chinese family pastime!
