WHAT’S ON IN MARCH

杭 州 加 油 !

Well it’s been a real emotional rollercoaster of a month

with most people who live in Hangzhou swinging

between states of anxiety, uncertainty, boredom,

restlessness, and insomnia If you had to spend a

significant portion of February cooped up in your apartment

then you likely have likely experienced the misery of cabin

fever. It hasn’t been an easy start for the Year of the Rat and

a new Chinese zodiac calendar cycle, neither in economic

nor in health respects. But as things ease up here in China

and life starts to return to normal, most people are feeling

more hopeful. There will be sometime still before we can put

COVID-19 behind us for good so it’s still good to stay inside

and this edition is packed with lots of ideas for how to cook,

exercise, and keep yourself entertained while stuck inside.

Hope you find it useful in these rough times. Remember even

if you feeling lonely, we are all in this together.

This last month has been a bit

of an ordeal for everyone in

China. Due to the multiple

closures of most venues around

town and the fact that many as of the

start of the month have yet to reopen,

we are offering the ability to request

three months of REDSTAR magazine

to your door. This way you can still

enjoy flipping through the hard copy

MEET THE LOCALS

By Annie Clover

What have

you been

doing to stay

entertained

during your

time at home?

My housemates had moved out,

so I was left alone in a big house

just as the virus was beginning to

make headlines. At first, I felt quite

lonely then that quickly turned

into boredom. I got a call from

some good friends checking up on

me because essentially, I'd gone

silent. I found solace in maintaining

daily communication with people,

and playing online games with

friends really helped me out of

the one true prison: the mind.

How do

you stay

motivated?

What really kept me

going was having people

I could connect with.

Looking forward to our

conversations on the group

chat and ignoring any online

information about the

problems outside, as if it were

just a rainy day. Not that I'm an

expert, but binge-watching TV

series didn't help. In this period

I had time to finish 2 books and

really enjoyed cooking. The only

tip I have is to keep yourself

busy with something, don't stay

in bed the whole day because

that makes your body lethargic.

Clean, sweep, wash dishes,

cook, do things that require

energy and you'll feel good.

What have

you found to

be the best

way to keep

in touch with

your friends?

A WeChat shared call with

close friends still here

and many outside China.

It doesn't really get

much closer than that.

Any advice to

people feeling

out of touch with

the world and

their friends?

I’ve come to realise that the

feeling is mutually shared with

many other people, and it

starts with one conversation,

anything related to what

you like. Be fully in with that

one person, conversation or

book/movie and slowly let

that reach out to anyone else

you remember and want to

share a similar feeling with.

What do you

enjoy most

about staying

indoors?

Saving money and prioritising

my time. I can't indulge

in random purchases, go

outside to procrastinate, or

eat takeaway food anymore.

Instead, I'm cooking for

myself, and planning my days

to their fullest potential.

What games

do you play

with friends

online?

I found some online card

games, like 'Cards Against

Humanity'. We can kick back

in a group call and have some

fun playing that together. I'm

bad at video games so that

isn't really an option for me;

I just watch and encourage.

FREESTYLE

SAME OLD STORY

By Moses A. Ameyaw

What kind of world is this?

The more in need you're for a thing

The more it seem far away from you

Hmm, it appears that the saying of the old

is still prevalent in our days:

Those who are in need don't get their desire

Those who have the said desire are really not in need.

For me I think this world is just weird

Or better still it's not fair

I have had several meetings with change

We agreed on a fair deal that he takes over

But almost always, I experience his turn-over

I have tried to stretch my

hands a little higher

But I just don't know why change

is refusing to take my hands.

After hanging my hands

without any support

I lost strength and just placed

my hands down

What at all do I need to do

to catch the attention of change?

When at all will change

fully embrace me as part of his own?

I'm getting tired about this change

My brother it's not easy

All that I hear is to quit my

decision to meet change.

But even with that, I'm still compelled

to make an appointment with change

I just don't know what to do next?

Take it easy, friend. Take it easy

The old don't want to leave you,

it often hates divorce.

Change surely want to meet you,

it often needs a greater force.

Being a friend of a desired change,

may take some time.

But never give up

particularly at the initial stages.

Wow, friend,

thanks for sharing this

I will keep pursuing change until I meet him.

118 BAR

By Camilla Fatticcioni

How often can you hear bands who

play something other than pop

covers? It’s kind of rare around

Hangzhou. It seems that most Jam

Nights tend to just do crowd-pleasers most

of the time. Can you find a place that has

live Jazz Fusion Funk Music? Most people

probably haven‘t even heard of Jazz Fusion

Funk, let alone heard it played live before!

The music genre developed in the late

‘60s. It’s a combination of jazz harmony

and improvisation with rock music, funk

and rhythm and blues. The band that plays

this catchy, toe-tapping style of music here

in Hangzhou is from all over the world.

If you really want to hear great quality

The restaurant is located in a very nice

HOT DRY NOODLE

(REGANMIAN)

THINKING OF WUHAN RIGHT NOW!

By Max Burns

I

decided to learn, and then show you

how to make this dish, because it is the

most famous and popular breakfast

food in Wuhan, often sold in street carts

and restaurants in residential and business

areas. This kind of noodle dish is unique

because the noodles are not in soup like

most other Asian-style hot noodle dishes.

Reganmian, or Hot Dry Noodles, have a

long history in Chinese food culture, and

along with Shanxi's knife-cut noodles ( 刀 削

面 : Daoxiaomian), Liangguang's yifumian,

Sichuan's dandanmian, and northern

China's zhajiangmian, are collectively

referred to as the "Top five noodles of China"

NOODLE ORIGIN

The summer time in Wuhan is extremely

long, and the high temperature causes

food's rapid deterioration. As a result,

people added dietary alkali into noodles to

avoid deterioration, that is the predecessor

of hot dry noodles. A widely circulated

rumour is, in the early 1930s, there was

a small food stand operated by Bao Li,

a hawker who made a living by selling

bean noodles and noodle soups near a

temple in Hankou. One day, Li poured

sesame oil onto his noodles accidentally,

and he boiled those noodles then added

shallot and other condiments on the next

day and sold them on next morning. His

noodles became very popular because of

its unique taste, and customers asked Bao Li

what kind of noodle it is, Bao Li answered:

Hot dry noodles. (source Wikipedia)

YOU WILL NEED:

• 1 wok or pan

• 6 small bowls for flavourings & spices

• 1-2 noodle bowls

INGREDIENTS

(FOR 2 SERVINGS):

• 200 g jianshuimian or any udon style

noodle

• 10 cms ginger, sliced

• 1 small red onion, sliced

• 2-3 cloves of garlic, crushed

• Handful of small fresh and dried

chillis

• Chilli flakes or powder

• Star anise

• Sichuan peppercorns

• Chinese ‘5 spice’

• Onion powder

• 3-4 tablespoons of sesame paste or

tahini

• Sesame oil

• Light soy sauce

• Beijing sweet sauce

• Oyster sauce (or Oyster mushroom

sauce to make it vegan)

• 200 ml vegetable (or peanut oil) for

frying

• Chinese black vinegar

FOR GARNISH:

• 2-3 spring onions, sliced

• Small handful of chopped Zhacai

(Chinese pickled vegetable)

At many, many street food places in

Wuhan, the chefs typically cook up a

huge batch of noodles and then make

up a bowl for each customer. The way

I do this is to make up 5 sauces (and 1

bowl of spices), that will be added to the

blank noodle canvas, giving it loads of

interesting flavours.

FIRST, GET 5 SMALL BOWLS AND MAKE ALL

THE DIFFERENT SAUCES:

STEP 1 – MAKE FLAVOURED OIL:

Heat 100 ml oil in pan or wok. Fry the

ginger and onion slices until golden brown,

to flavour the oil. Discard the onion and

ginger, add 2 teaspoons of sesame oil, mix

and pour into a small bowl.

STEP 2 – MAKE CHILLI OIL:

Heat 100 ml oil in pan or wok. Fry up the

fresh & dried chillies, star anise and Sichuan

peppercorns. mix and pour into a small

bowl.

STEP 3 – MAKE SOY SAUCE

FLAVOURING:

In a small bowl mix a few tablespoons of soy

sauce with 1 tablespoon of sweet Beijing

sauce and one tablespoon of oyster sauce.

STEP 4 – MAKE SESAME SAUCE:

In a small bowl mix sesame paste with a

splash of sesame oil until it's one cohesive

sauce. Not too runny but not too thick

because you will use this to pour over your

noodles later.

STEP 5 – MAKE GARLIC SAUCE:

Crush up the garlic and put in a small bowl.

Add some black vinegar and a tiny bit of

water and mix it up.

GET 1 MORE BOWL AND MAKE A DRY SPICE

MIXTURE

In a small bowl mix chili powder, Chinese 5

spice and onion powder. Save for later.

NOW TO MAKE THE NOODLES

Get your wok or pan and boil some water.

Add noodles plus a splash of sesame oil,

and cook them for slightly less

time than instructed on the

packet, so that they are

slightly chewy. Now turn

off the heat and add a

glass of cold water to the

pan to stop the noodles

from cooking further.

TO SERVE

Drain the noodles and serve into 1-2 bowls.

Now you add each of the 6 flavourings

on top of the noodles. You can do this in

any order and to suit your taste, but this is

exactly how I do it!

1. I drizzle 2-3 tablespoons of the sesame

sauce over my noodles…

2. I add a teaspoon of the dry powder…

3. I add 2 tablespoons of the soy sauce…

4. I add 2 teaspoons of the flavoured oil (the

one I made in step 1)

5. I add 2 teaspoons of chilli oil…

6. I add 1 teaspoon of garlic sauce…

7. Finally, I garnish with chopped

scallions (and if you can find

them add some chopped

Chinese pickled vegetables,

luobogan zhacai)

Now, it’s important to mix

everything up in your bowl

and then slurp away!

STUFFED

PEPPERS

By Annie Clover

Since so many people

were stuck inside, one

of the few things that

was actually somewhat

positive about the last month

is that a lot of people finally

found the time to get back in

the kitchen and cook rather

than eating out all the time. I’ll

admit that not everyone may

see having to cook as a positive

thing, not everyone can handle

the heat in a kitchen after all.

Even if you don’t love cooking,

it is a great way to pass the

time and the results are usually

better than take out. Here is

a very simple and delicious

recipe to try your hand at if you

aren’t that experienced and,

even if you cook everyday it’s

a nice quick meal to whip up.

INGREDIENTS

(APPROXIMATE):

• 4-6 Sweet Bell Peppers

(depending on their size)

• ¼ Red or White Onion,

• 2 Cups of Cooked Rice,

• A Cup of Minced Meat

(250g) (pork/beef/chicken –

whichever you prefer),

• 2 eggs,

• Pinch of Salt,

• Bit of Black Pepper or other

Seasonings you like,

• A dash of Ketchup

• Sour Cream or Plain

(Unsweetened) Yogurt

COOKING DIRECTIONS:

1. Cook some the rice in a rice

cooker until sticky (if you are

on the Keto diet, then the rice

can be swapped for carrots).

2. Chop onion into small diced

pieces and put in a bowl.

3. Mixed together the

onions, pre-cooked rice,

minced meat, raw eggs.

4. Then add salt and season

the mixture with pepper or

other seasonings you like.

5. Cut the tops off peppers,

about 1 cm down the side.

6. Clean out the inside of

the Peppers removing

the seeds and rind and

then wash them out.

7. Fill each Pepper with the

minced meat mixture until it

gets just about to the edge

and then cover it again with

the pepper top like a hat.

8. Place the stuffed peppers

in a pan or pot. Fill it with

water until it is half way

up the side of the peppers

and then add a spoon of

ketchup to the water.

9. Cover the pot and cook

on a low temperature

for an hour or so.

10. Serve these delicious stuffed

peppers with a sour cream

topping and some steamed

greens on the side. (Sour

cream can be replaced on

plain yogurt with no sugar

if you want low-fat option)

ROCK

OUT-

BREAK:

THE

PIXIES

By Rodrigo Ocaranza

These long

days stuck in

confinement

have struck a

chord in the minds

and bodies of those

who have been

cooped up inside.

Now, not just in the

city of Hangzhou,

but across China, a

billion people are

aching to move

and tear off the masks that obscure their

faces. What better antidote to shake off

this quarantine lethargy than to ferment

it into some good alternative punk rock

indie madness! Yes, I’m talking about

the Pixies - almost 34 years of rock

compressed in

one anti-flu pill.

If you’re looking to

let your anger out

and unexpectedly

start laughing with

no reason, or just

simply want to

start a mosh pit

with your local 保

安 and 阿 姨 , songs

like ‘Something

Against You,’

‘Crackity Jones’ and

‘In Heaven,’ are just perfect to start with.

They band recently announced a tour in

China and we were eagerly expecting to

see them, but sadly the dates in Shanghai

and Beijing have been cancelled. Certainly

not the worst thing that has come from

this outbreak, but it sucks all the same…

But seriously, in 1986, this American

alternative rock band from Boston,

Massachusetts formed. It now consists

The thing that really characterises

the Pixies’ style is the brutal honesty

that emanates from them in the moment.

of Charles (Black Francis) Thompson IV

(vocals, guitar; also known as ''Frank

Black''), Joey Santiago (lead guitar), David

Lovering (drums) and Paz Lenchantin

(bass, vocals) who is currently subbing

in for the original bassist Kim Deal.

The classic line-up engages with yowling

howls and pan-fried screams and an

unpredictable melodic resonance

characterised by Black Francis’ vocals in

combination with David’s straight forward

and tight drums. Joey Santiago’s gloomy

and equanimous riffs blend in Kim Deals

melancholic and thick bass execution

spiced up with her soothing and intense

vocals. All together managing to capture

the distortion, the madness spills

and melody in an unusual and pretty

digestible balance,

as shown on albums

such as Doolittle

and Surfer Rosa.

Through some of

their most popular

songs like ‘This

Monkey is Gone

to Heaven’ and

‘Where is my Mind’

(the latter you may

remember from the

end scene in the

movie Fight Club),

we can appreciate apocalyptic crude

and surrealistic tales that present us a

dialogue in the misfortunes of our nature

in a somewhat positive mist of expression.

The thing that really characterises the

Pixies’ style is the brutal honesty that

emanates from them in the moment.

It stays real by its raw nature from

the sound to the lyrics and theirthe

explosive performances. There are no

restrictions whether it’s an explosion

of emotion in any colour or any idea

meandering around taboo topics and

logical sanity. It just can’t be filtered,

offering the listener a chance to strip

off the judgments of how music should

be and enter free space of surrealistic

freedom and enjoy the Pixies’ wonderful

sense of expression in its raw form.

Things have finally begun to calm down in Hangzhou. The loosening

of the lockdown restrictions and the slowing of new cases per

day to single digits were incredibly great news for all stuck inside

their homes or kept away on extended holidays abroad. But as

Hangzhou—and China as a whole—gets ready to return to work and get

the economy back on track, news of independent sustained outbreaks—

ones where most of the infected had no contact with anyone from China—

are appearing across the globe. The question on everyone’s mind is

whether COVID-19 is starting to go away or is it just getting started.

THE SECOND

CHAPTER OF

COVID-19

CHINA IS ON THE MEND,

BUT SYMPTOMS ARE

APPEARING GLOBALLY

By Jared Thompson

COVID-19 IN CONTEXT

Of all the costs that have resulted from this

virus outbreak, the families who have lost

loved ones are clearly paying the worst

price. With the total number of infected

individuals breaking 80,000 at the end of

February, there have been more than 2,600

who have lost their lives to the virus. It is

true that the common cold claims between

291,000 to 646,000 lives per year the world

over (CDC statistic), which does make the

Coronavirus seem small in comparison. While

this is true, we need to take into account

the fact that the flu only kills about 0.1% of

the people infected, which means on a bad

year we could see over 646 million cases of

the common cold. COVID-19, on the other

hand, has at an average death rate of over 3%

inside of China and 0.7% in larger outbreaks

outside of China. That means even with

lower numbers of cases and access to top

quality good health care abroad, COVID-19

is still killing at seven times the rate of the

common cold. The question is will it continue

to spread and reach places that cannot treat

it as well.

DARK CLOUDS OVER

OTHER SHORES

Like a bad storm in a distant land, the impact

of this virus has been watched from a far

by the world as it blew through China. But

over the last weekend, we have seen major

international outbreaks in Korea, Iran and

now most recently in Italy. In just a few

days, the alert levels of these countries have

spiked with the news of cases being reported

that have had no direct contact with anyone

who had travelled to China. COVID-19 is now

quickly becoming a global problem, and one

that many are worried won’t be addressed

with the same level of seriousness that we

saw in China.

It was hard for people outside of China

to imagine being quarantined for weeks

on end. Many international outlets cited

these measures as another instance of

China’s unparalleled control over the

lives of its citizens. With new sustained

outbreaks appearing abroad, doctors and

health organisations are worried that other

countries could be reacting too late. Korea

and Japan have both been hit hardest

following China, but both countries have

state-of-the-art medical infrastructure so

the number of deaths have stayed low:

seven and one, respectively. With Iran now

reporting 15 deaths in just the last few days

and that both a parliamentarian and their

Deputy Health Minister have now been

16 redstarhangzhou.com

广 告 • 特 辑 // FEATURES /

infected, things are obviously tense there

too. There are growing fears about what this

could mean for the developing countries,

like Afghanistan and Syria, that it borders,

as they will be far less equipped to handle

testing, treating and containing the virus. As

the scope of impacted populations grow, so

do the costs.

THE ECONOMIC IMPACT

Even if the virus manages to be contained

and doesn’t begin to spread widely around

the world, the passive impact and residual

costs of COVID-19 will be felt for months to

come. The outbreak over the past weekend

in the north of Italy have caused schools to

close, sporting events shuttered, and fashion

shows postponed. This kind of halt to daily

life is something that we here in China

know all too well. Aside from the reduced

Empty Italian Store

availability of masks and rubbing alcohol,

most food and living products stayed in stock

over the last weeks. The small outbreaks

in Italian villages are already straining the

amount of food on the shelves of stores 3

hours away. Unfortunately, these runs on

stores only strain supply chains further.

The shutter from the virus’ economic impact

has finally hit international stock exchanges,

which fell between 3 and 5 percent in a

single day all over the globe. It is a good

thing that China is getting back to work; it

makes up 17% of all manufacturing, globally.

But the production capacity of most factories

is currently only at about 20% to 30% of their

normal production capacity. Things abroad

are beginning to get stretched. The products

in warehouses will cover us for another

month of shutdown, but after that suppliers

will have a very hard time keeping up with

demand if things don’t get back on track. We

need to conserve a bit more in the coming

months and not give in to fear or buy more

than we need.

One thing is for sure, COVID-19 is not behind

us. The Coronavirus will still be infecting the

airwaves and our social media feeds for a

while to come, and it might be still going

around even in May.

MEDIA

OUTBREAK:

THE VIRAL

REACTION

ABROAD

By Eleonora Bollini

COVID-19, or as it was more commonly known, the Coronavirus. It has been

just about impossible to not have heard this word sounding through the

massive news coverage about its outbreak and the impact it has had on China.

For weeks, all around the world the media were almost exclusively talking

about it, covering it from every angle imaginable. But there were some

strong differences between what was happening here and how it was being

reported… I am not talking about a cover up, but the way it was blown out of

proportion in the media coverage abroad, specifically in Italy—being Italian,

I was very aware of how frenzied the media coverage was there.

Here in China, everything started

around the middle of January, and

it quickly turned chaotic. The news

poured onto our phones through

social feeds like an avalanche. We started

reading more about it and everyone was

encouraged to stay inside, avoid crowded

places, and only go out if absolutely

necessary. Nobody expected what would

happen next. After a week, more cities

started closing off and the whole province

of Hubei was quarantined, transportations

were suspended and the suggestion of

staying at home was no longer merely

advice. While we were now required to stay

home by the government, it was upheld,

more than anything, by fear.

During the first days, everyone had lots of

questions and worries, but there were no

answers. The source of the virus was not sure,

and nobody knew what had kicked off the

epidemic. It is unfortunate that the Wuhan

government underestimated the problem

at the very beginning, and this did likely

contribute to the speed it spread across

China. Chinese media had been clear on the

severity of this outbreak from that point on,

and were very open with facts and statistics.

Of course, with all the bad news flooding in,

there were also some good updates, such

We are all part of the same world,

and we should put aside our

differences and work together.

as the rapid construction of a much-needed

hospital in just nine days, ready to host

one thousand more sick patients. People

from all over the country signed up to help

manage the situation and provide care to

the sick; a job that along with the incredibly

exhaustive work came with real risks for

every person who went there. From doctors

to volunteers, the country started working

together as a single massive team, trying to

make it through the storm.

The outbreak of this Novel Coronavirus was

the most popular topic for weeks, and not

just in China.

In Italy, the media focused on the mortality

and infection rates. When the Chinese

government decided to take preventive

measures, asking us to not go out, the

Italian media narrated the safety measure

as a restriction on citizen’s civil liberties.

Reports of the positive and heart-warming

things we all saw here in China didn’t get

any overseas airtime. They did talk about

the hospital built in nine days, because it

sounded as if things were out of control.

China was presented in a bad light because

magazines, TV journalists, and radio

broadcasts decided to emphasise negative

things. Naturally, this one-sidedness caused

overreactions in the real lives of people

living abroad, even in countries with less

than a handful of cases. Some Chinese

restaurants had to close because customers

were afraid, students were kept home from

school, and East Asian people had to deal

with people gawking at them and covering

their faces when they approached.

Due to the massive decentralisation of

information through social media, it has

become increasingly difficult to distinguish

real information from fake news—and

there were some insane and racist claims

circulating. Out of China, this outbreak was

like the end of the world.

Meanwhile inside China, we all saw the

strength of this country to deal with an

emergency of this scale, and its capability

to contain it fast. The entire situation

caused many problems in all walks of life,

from economic downturns to boring days

stuck inside, but people remembered that

others had it worse than them and praised

the brave ones struggling on behalf of the

sick and the healthy, both helpless in their

own ways. At least we can all learn one

thing from this outbreak: we are all part of

the same world, and we should put aside

our differences and work together because

problems, like bad rumours, spread quickly

if they aren’t contained.

THE VIRUS DIARY

OF AN EXPAT.

By Dr Rob Burton

Xiasha, Jianggan District, Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China.

As of 3rd February, 2020 it has been fourteen days since the days (18th, 19th, 20th January 2020) when I

could have become infected by the Wuhan virus. I was a teacher and a judge in the China Daily heats of a

national speaking competition held on the campus of Zhejiang University. There were over 300 students.

I taught four classes of over 80 students each over the first two days and then spent Monday judging the

competition. I stayed in the same hotel, on campus, as many of the students. All went well, and I enjoyed

teaching, meeting and judging the high school aged students.

Wednesday 22 nd

January

I received a WeChat message from the competition

organisers to inform me that around 30 of the students

had come from Wuhan and they were trying to follow

up on their health status. My Chinese colleague also

reports having a cough that evening and will be going

to the hospital first thing in the morning. The next day

he reports back that he is free of the virus and has a

common cold. I start to consider my own health status.

Saturday 25 th

January

Most of us have masks in the house, one or two for

those days when the air pollution is bad. But recently

the air is good, so it becomes a bit of a hunt around the

apartment to find them. Once we have them, we decide

to go to the supermarket to stock up on some food, just

in case things get worse as the advice is to stay in and

not go out. About half of the people in the supermarket

were wearing face masks. The pharmacy across the

road is open so we go in to buy some more. The shelf is

nearly bare and even as we look at them there is a steady

stream of people coming in to make the same purchase.

We buy four masks and some hand sanitizer. We should

have bought more—hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Sunday 26 th

January

My wife is going to Changzhou to visit her mum.

She is following the news and decides that it is

safe to go. DiDi is still working so she gets to the

station in good time. By now temperature checks

at the entrance to the station have been instigated.

Once on the train she sends me a photo. She is the

only person in an otherwise empty carriage.

Monday 27 th

January

– Friday 31 st January

During the week she is away I am still concerned

about the possibility that I might have been infected

at the speaking competition. Staying in the house

alone—‘bugging in’ as the preppers have it—brings

with it its own problems. Psychologically, it does get

tough, not going out, not meeting people. The only

window on the world is WeChat and other media

accessible through one’s computer. WeChat quickly

becomes a place of myth and lies. Numbers and

conspiracy theories abound, racism and untruths

about the genesis of the virus are bound together.

20 redstarhangzhou.com

广 告 • 特 辑 // FEATURES /

I try to maintain a level, logical head. But every cough,

sneeze, wheeze, ache and pain becomes suspect.

Have I been infected? Boredom quickly becomes

one’s default position. I binge watch a few movie

trilogies, Beverly Hills Cop, The Bourne movies. I am

usually a creative person and can fill my time with

writing, painting, reading but my brain seems to have

become zombified – maybe the zombie apocalypse

is not brought on by a virus but by boredom.

I go out around the community grounds; the dog still

needs to be walked. The place is empty. One day as I

was peering out of the entrance to see if the pharmacy

across the road was open, an ambulance turned up

and men in full hazmat suits got out. I high tailed it

back to my apartment. Out of my window on the

9th floor, I watched the ambulance park outside the

apartment block next door. “Maybe someone is ill”

is the next thought you have as your anxiety levels

jump up another notch. The week passes boringly, I

eat all the snacks in the house and run out of wine.

Friday 31s t

January

My wife returns from Changzhou. She tells me that it

was impossible to buy masks there as all the pharmacies

were sold out; her mum and brother only have a few left.

I purchased masks from Ebay in the UK while she was

away, and a friend will courier them out to us. Amazon

UK had sold out, yet ironically was in stock for masks

that would be “shipped from China.” We will not receive

these masks for at least another seven days or more.

Saturday 1 st

February

We once again ventured out to the supermarket.

On this occasion 100% of the shoppers were

wearing masks. We were able to stock up on food

and there was little or no evidence of panic buying.

The government has already stated that keeping

supermarkets, vegetable markets and pharmacies

open was a priority. The only shelves that were nearly

empty were the ones for instant and dried noodles.

Since my wife has returned, she has been watching the

news. One has to be impressed with the dedication

of the doctors, nurses, police, army, ancillary workers,

workers in the factories making masks and hazmat suits,

down to the delivery guys and taxi drivers still working,

and to our own community cleaners who rigorously

disinfect the lifts and the community spaces every day.

Tuesday 4 th

February

Things have not gone from bad to worse but have

significantly changed––things are still bad. Just three

days after visiting the supermarket to stock up, our

locality went into lockdown. We must stay in our

apartments but are allowed in the grounds, for example

to take the dog for a walk. Now, however, the rule is only

one person can leave the community to go fetch food

and essentials and they can only do that every two days.

Wednesday 5 th

February

Friday 7 th

February

My employer has asked me to prepare online

lessons for when the semester restarts on the 24th

February, so I now have something to do. This is a

new departure for me, and I really don’t know how

to provide online lessons for 30 plus students, I

have been asking on the various TEFL Facebooks

groups and got some ideas from other teachers.

Thursday 6 th

February

The masks from the UK have been dropped off by my

friend at the pick-up point in the UK, but we are not

sure whether the delivery will get here, we will see. I was

speaking to an American friend yesterday who works

at my previous school, he was given a box of masks

as a gift before the news of the virus broke, he didn’t

want them, so he gave them to his cleaner. Now he is

improvising, using sleeping masks to protect his mouth

and nose, as he cannot find any proper masks to buy.

My wife went out to the only local shops available to us:

the small vegetable shop and the pharmacy. We were

told that the bigger fruit and vegetable market, further

down the road, was closed because of the infection. The

vegetable shop is also selling meat and milk. My wife

managed to get the last package of milk that day. This is

a box of 12 small cartons. These usually cost 30-40 RMB,

but she had to pay 60 RMB. The vegetables were double

price too, and the pork on sale is 40-50% dearer¬––clearly

some people will get rich from this crisis. The meat is

another source of infection concern, so we will not buy it.

We are now on the COVID-19 Diet, which means

rationing the booze, because in rookie error we didn’t

buy it in suitable amounts as we didn’t realise we

would be locked down. We are also having smaller

portions of food so what we do have lasts longer.

I usually have muesli for breakfast but that means

burning through the milk and I also need milk for

tea. It’s a first world problem but I’m British, and a

cup of tea just makes everything better, doesn’t it?

Saturday 8 th February

The days seem to blend into one. There is only so much

YouTube you can watch. We watch the news on CCTV1

every day to keep up with things and developments.

Do not believe the Western press or the haters on

social media telling you things are being covered up––

they are not––Trump is right most of it is fake news.

The UK Masks have been picked up at the UK depot.

Friday 14 th

February

Valentine’s Day. The masks are booked in at the depot

in Hong Kong. Walking Snooky, our dog, is now the

only reason to go out and break the tedium. And when

one is out it is remarkable how silent it is outside. At

night, it is almost eerie because nothing is moving,

no cars or roar of lorries on the main road, which

is quite a distance away, but nevertheless one can

normally hear the traffic noise. So, the still of the night

is something to be welcomed. During the day the

birdsong becomes more apparent and evidence that

life does go on whatever the circumstances. Spring

is coming and they too, feel the need to get busy.

Sunday 16 th

February

Over the last few days I have been seeing more people

out around the community. Probably stir-crazy from

sitting in for so long they are enjoying the warm sun and

meeting friends for a gossip. Some of the older residents

are powerwalking or using the exercise equipment while

the youngsters are expending some of the energy they

have stored up by being indoors for so long––it is good

to hear the laughter and shouts of the kids as they play.

Tuesday 18 t h February

Things have eased up, public transport is working, we

can go outside of the community. I have my Hangzhou

(Alibaba) green cross code and, Abracadabra, we are

out on the street, taking Snooky to the vets for her

annual rabies shot. It’s mundane – but it’s exciting. This

is the first time out since going to the supermarket on

the 1st February. The masks have arrived in China.

Tomorrow? Who knows?

“Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don't

resist them - that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality.

Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like.”

FENDING OFF THE

CORONAVIRUS

FIGHTING INFECTION STARTS WITH

BEING AWARE

By Brine Taz

Health, like time, is most valuable to you when you realise you are losing

it. The best way to maintain your health is to raise your awareness of

how you take care of your body - and your environment plays a big part

in this. You are, as they say, what you eat... but sometimes all it takes

for something to get into your body is touching the wrong ordinary

object in your surroundings.

We are only into the third month of

2020, and we have already been

bombarded with reminders of

our mortality: news broadcasts,

social media channels, temperature checks

at the grocery store, and even a good

portion of the articles in this magazine

are all reminders of the fact that the

Coronavirus is out there, somewhere.

With the ever-expanding knowledge

of COVID-19, we have become more

apprehensive of our often-fragile health.

But this article isn’t to scare you further;

it’s to remind you that there is a lot you

can do to help ensure you stay happy,

healthy and free of infection. Here’s a list

of the best things you can do, and they

are great habits for overall health too.

DRINK LOTS OF WATER

One of the easiest ways to ensure your body

stays healthy and able to resist the bacteria

or viruses that are constantly circulating

in our environments, is by drinking water.

You are about two thirds water and guess

what? your system doesn’t function well

if you don’t have enough of it. Staying

hydrated helps clean your system and fight

off intruders that may have snuck inside.

WASH YOUR HANDS

Are your hands clean? I hope you are sure

because the average person touches their

face 3,000 times per day. This is the most

common way germs pass between people,

so remember to wash your hands often. At

the very least you should wash them before

and after handling food, using the bathroom

and after you come indoors, but especially

after taking out the trash, cleaning your

house, cleaning up after animals, or

gardening, as these activities and places are

fertile ground for harmful bacteria. Alcoholbased

hand sanitiser is a great way to keep

your hands clean when you are on the go.

CLEAN YOUR UTENSILS

Remember to clean all kitchen utensils

and keep all dishes clean - sharing

them can also help spread any growing

infection. If you happen to have one of

those gadgets that sterilise dishware

with steam, there has never been a

better time to learn how it works.

EAT CLEAN AND

HEALTHY THINGS

Like staying hydrated, it is important to

have a healthy diet with lots of vitamins and

fresh produce. Your gut is the foundation

of your immune system, so make sure

your diet is well rounded. Boil all tap

water before drinking or drink bottled

water. Wash any fruits and vegetables

before eating or cooking them and avoid

eating fruits you haven’t peeled. Even

though we all like ordering in, you don't

know who is cooking your food or how

it is handled, so if you are worried about

infection then cook for yourself. Keep food

and garbage in covered, rodent-proof

containers. Rodents often carry disease,

and it isn’t always easy to tell if you have

them before they are into your food.

Be Extra Conscious Around Sickness

It should go without saying, but make sure

you wash even more often if you are feeling

ill or if you cough or sneeze. If you are near

anyone that is showing symptoms of being

ill, stay at least a metre away from them if

possible, and wash your hands if you may

have touched something they did. If you

need to cough or sneeze, cover your mouth

by using your elbow as opposed to using

your hands or rather use a disposable tissue

to catch it and then dispose of it quickly.

TREAT WOUNDS

CAREFULLY

Properly disinfect all cuts and cover them

with a bandage since they very prone to all

kinds of infections. If you were unfortunate

enough to suffer from and animal bite, then

you really need to get a series of rabies shots

within 24 hours. Avoid picking at wounds.

PET AWARENESS

If you have a pet, then it is crucial that

they are properly socialised and know

not to bite or scratch visitors. Make sure

they have all their vaccine shots and

visit the veterinarian regularly. Keep

a close watch on your pet’s contact

with other animals as they could carry

diseases. It is good practice to wash

your hands after handling pets too,

especially if they spend time outside.

Stay vigilant and health conscious

and you’ll be able to make it through

this outbreak and whatever the

next flu season sneezes your way.

MUST-HAVE

CHINESE APPS

By Turaeva Ziyodakhon

China has become second home for many

foreigners. Our jobs, our lovely friends

and our universities are all here. Far from

our original homes, we have people here

who we can think of as our second families. This

deep connection made it so much harder when the

virus broke out and, like a dark cloud rolling over

a sunny day, thundered through our new home.

For those foreigners who stayed in China, going

out was not safe. Staying cooped up for weeks at a

time without the comforts that modern information

technology affords us is hard to imagine. With that

in mind, we would like to recommend a few of our

favourite Chinese apps that will help you enjoy your

time inside and will be useful in getting what you need

now and after the clouds of COVID-19 have cleared.

1. TIK TOK

Nowadays Tik Tok has become

incredibly popular among

young Chinese and foreigners.

It is a free social media platform

where you can watch a

seemingly unending volume

of funny videos or create your

own. Once you open this app

on your phone it will be hard

to close it. It is now the fastest

growing app the whole world

over, so worth checking out.

2. 饿 了 么 (E LE ME)

All last month when going

out was not safe in China, we

needed a way to kill those

hunger cravings and get

something delicious to eat—

sometimes we are all too lazy to

cook something for ourselves.

Fortunately, 饿 了 么 was there

to save the day. Just download

the app and enter your address

(in Chinese) and away you

go. Thousands of different

dishes are available, including

Chinese, Korean, Japanese,

Mexican, and fast food

favourites too. You can easily

find your favourite restaurant

in this app and order tasty

food which will be delivered

right to your home. This app

was a lifesaver for so many

people during the lockdown.

3. 高 德 地 图

(GAODE DITU)

Now that most people can

go back out, Gaode Ditu’ will

help you to find the location

of the place where you want

to go. One more advantage of

this app is that you can check

when the next bus will arrive,

so you know when to head

to the stop—very useful on

rainy days. This app can help

make sure that you won’t

feel lost in your new home.

4. 叮 咚 买 菜 (DING

DONG MAI CAI)

Ding Dong Mai Cai is a selfoperated

platform that offers

fresh products like vegetables,

fruits, meat, eggs, seafood,

rice, noodles, soy products, oil,

etc. All these products can be

delivered directly to your door,

and if you make a purchase

for 29 RMB or more, delivery

is free! What are you waiting

for? Get Ding Dong Mai Cai

and order some fresh food

instead of all that takeout.

5. 闲 鱼 (XIAN YU)

Xian Yu is a very useful app that

was created by Alibaba Group

for buying and selling secondhand

items. Xian Yu now boasts

a daily sales volume of 200,000

used products. This app is

similar to Taobao except where

Taobao sells new products, Xian

Yu sells second-hand goods.

There are lots of categories in

this app like clothing, shoes,

bags, accessories, appliances,

computers, phones, baby

products, and the list goes on and

on. If you want a good quality

camera at a really affordable

price, this app is for you.

6. 探 探 (TAN TAN)

If you spent Valentine’s Day all

alone at home then this local

Chinese dating app can help

you find someone special to

call your own. Download 探

探 and get someone you’d

be happy to be quarantined

with. Tan Tan, like Tinder, uses

geolocation and machine

learning to match profiles and

then get you talking to singles

in your neighbourhood. Tan

Tan is a sure way to find your

perfect match online and

get to know them offline.

7. 美 团 外 卖

(MEITUAN

WAIMAI)

Meituan Waimai is another

application for ordering food

similar to E Le Me. Meituan offers

a wide variety of food from all

sorts of restaurants. If you have

WeChat you don’t even need to

download Meituan. Just open

WeChat, go to WeChat Pay, and

then go to the menu ‘Powered

by Third-party Operator,’ and

just click on Food Delivery. Its

logo is a yellow kangaroo. The

hardest part is deciding what

delicious food you want to eat.

8. QQ MUSIC

QQ Music, another great app

from Tencent, the makers of

WeChat, is a really convenient

app for streaming music in

China. No matter what country

you are from you can easily find

your favourites songs in your

own language just by searching

the song, artist or album.

Not only does it have a huge

selection of music, but you can

also find music videos in the

app and share your favourite

music with your friends directly

in WeChat - they don’t need

to download anything else

to listen to it. Download the

app now and start grooving.

HOW ECO-

FRIENDLY IS

HANGZHOU?

By Ryan Wilson

An issue that has plagued the world

ever since industrialisation became

part of everyday life has been

pollution and the ever decreasing

amount of green areas as cities grow larger.

When most people from abroad think of

China, visions of gray skies and tightly

packed cities are what usually come to mind.

But that is changing. In honour of the green

month of March, here are some reasons

why Hangzhou should be on your list of

places to visit if you love eco-friendly cities.

Hangzhou has been one of the eco-friendly

leaders in China for quite some time now

with many projects ranging from city

bicycle sharing (long before Mobike and

Hellobike came along), to being a pilot

city in China’s Low-Carbon City and Eco-

Garden City programs. With forest coverage

of over 67%, Hangzhou has done a lot to

ensure that the environment remains a

top priority. Around West Lake alone there

are more than 8,000 acres of mountains

and forest. The forest coverage, mass tree

planting, and the general beautifying of

the city’s urban landscape has become

such a hit that even bloggers and travellers

such as Mark Brown on CitiNature

have written entire articles about it.

As part of the Low-Carbon City program,

Hangzhou has not only pledged to

decrease its carbon emissions substantially

by developing low carbon industries,

transportation, and institutional reform, but

it is also one of the only Chinese cities to go

beyond the national targets. As part of the

Eco-Garden City program, it has pledged to

not only preserve existing parklands, but

create more through planting more parks.

Hangzhou is currently increasing its subway

system from the 5 lines already open to 13

in the coming years which not only makes

it easier for people to travel around the

city, but drastically decreases the amount

of carbon emissions by fossil fuels needed

for daily commutes. Even though a lot of

the trees around Hangzhou’s streets have

been cleared during the digging of the new

subway lines, it’s a small temporary price to

pay to have far less traffic on the road. So

far there are more than 1.7 million trips per

day on the subway and that number will

only rise as more and more lines increase

the number of people that can opt for

this quick convenient form of travel.

Even more impressive is the fact that here,

you can practically ride across the entire

city by bicycle—something you rarely

see outside of Europe. Long before the

sidewalks became polluted with rentable

bikes randomly thrown wherever they were

dismounted, Hangzhou already boasted the

largest public bicycle system in the world.

As part of the Eco-Garden City program,

Hangzhou has also improved city-wide

access for pedestrians and bicyclists.

广 告 • 特 辑 // FEATURES /

When it comes to trying to deal

with the pollution coming from the

cars on the road, Hangzhou is again

leading the way. There are generous

subsidies when purchasing an ecofriendly

vehicle: The owner of an ecofriendly

car can receive 53% of their

money back in subsidies making it

one of the best cities in the world

for getting yourself into an electric

vehicle. In other words, you can afford

to settle on getting a Tesla rather than

just dream about it until you retire.

These subsidies even extend to the

charging infrastructure that comes

along with creating a large number

of eco-friendly vehicles, taking away

one of the largest concerns many

people have when buying electric cars.

These policies go hand-in-hand with

many popular electric car companies,

such as Tesla and Geeli, establishing

large branches in Hangzhou.

Alongside electric cars, electric bikes

have become hugely popular across

China and Hangzhou is no exception.

Not only do they have zero carbon

emissions, but they cost less to charge

than using the public transit system

every day, and they take up far

less space than a regular vehicle

which reduces the need for larger

parking complexes, so Hangzhou

can continue to focus on keeping the

city full of green places to kick back

and relax in. From its never ending

system of mountains which provide

a visitor with countless hours of

beautiful hiking, to its ever expanding

network of public transportation

systems and electric vehicle options,

Hangzhou is at the forefront of

China’s eco-dream to green the

image the world has in its collective

mind when we think of China.

SMALL

EFFORTS

ADD UP

HANGZHOU AUSSIE

BUSHFIRE FUNDRAISER

By Jared Thompson

Undoubtedly, one of the

worst bushfire seasons

in Australian history

ravaged the countryside

and a large part of the country

is still picking up the pieces

and trying to move forward.

Over 10 million hectares

(100,000 kilometres squared)

were consumed over the last

5 months since they began,

making this season of bushfires

ten times worse than the fires

that afflicted the Amazon last

year. 6,000 buildings and homes

were consumed and, one of the

most staggering numbers to

comprehend by far is the loss

of animal life, many of whom

were already endangered to

begin with. It’s hard to fathom,

but wildlife groups estimate

that over 1,000,000,000 animals

died in the fires over the last

half of a year. It was so bad that

the wild koala’s populations

have been pushed nearly

to the brink of extinction.

After dealing with one of

the most dangerous natural

disasters we can imagine, parts

of Australia are now being

hit with yet another natural

disaster: flooding. There has

been so much rain recently that

dams that were at a low level

because of years of drought, are

now overflowing. The region

of the Nepean Dam, which

is one of the dams that gives

Sydney it’s water supply, has

been burdened with over 700

millimetres of rainfall. To put this

in perspective, that’s 100mm

more rain than Melbourne sees

throughout the whole year.

People are outside with water

广 告 • 文 化 // CULTURE /

nearly up to their necks and

street signs are being touched

by the water level in some

places. The reversal from first

being plagued by fire and then

by flood would almost be ironic,

if it weren’t so tragic. Both

these disastrous conditions are

clearly the kinds of symptoms

of dramatic changes in

climate and the frequency

and severity of such weather

disasters will only continue

to increase in coming years.

But not all hope is lost. We

need to start viewing these

disasters, and other global

catastrophes for the global

problems that they are. In a

truly heart-warming show of

support for the suffering of

people and animals many miles

away, hundreds of people and

dozens of companies right here

in Hangzhou gathered together

to raise funds for this cause.

What started as a small handful

of concerned Australians in

Hangzhou feeling far from

home and helpless to support

the people fighting the fires and

volunteering soon spread online

and people from all over China

were sharing the posts on their

WeChat moments and donating

what they could to the cause.

Just the first night of sharing the

charity link saw over 10,000 RMB

donated to the small local fund.

The fundraising efforts

culminated in a fundraising

dinner in the top floor

conference room at the Sofitel

Hangzhou Westlake. One

hundred tickets for the all-youcan-eat-and-drink

affair went

quickly, and this event capped

off the year of the Pig becoming

basically the last large function

in the Hangzhou international

community before people

took time off for the Spring

Festival. During the fundraiser,

over one hundred prizes that

had been donated by dozens

of companies around the city

were raffled off and a final silent

auction was also held. All told,

these dedicated and concerned

people managed to raise 68,215

RMB or $14,734 AUD to support

the firefighters, wildlife rescuers

and the costly efforts to rebuild.

As this tragedy finally now

subsides, a more global threat

to human life has reared its ugly

head in the form of this viral

outbreak. These very different

disasters, though different in

many ways, have something in

common: they have inspired

a tremendous outpouring of

support from people who hadn’t

been directly affected. From

videos of people the world

over showing their solidarity

for people trapped in Wuhan

with the rallying call of ‘Wuhan

Jiayou’ to the celebrity concerts

in Australia that have raised over

seven million AUD in support of

fire charities, we see time and

time again that people are less

divided than we are often led to

believe. The humble efforts of this

small movement in Hangzhou

to do something rather than

sit idly by and the funds they

managed to raise are things

we can all take a bit of pride in

as members of the Hangzhou

community. Way to go guys!

fields of Hangzhou are known the

world over for their distinct flavour.

Tasting tea and wandering around tea

plantations are year-round activities,

but only in spring will you get to watch

how farmers pick the tea buds by hand

and how workers roast the fresh leaves

into the dry tea we drink. So when tea

bushes begin to bud, it’s the perfect

time to plan a trip out to experience

this ancient part of local culture.

You might not know this, but the

Meilu Legend Hotel has its own

Longjing Tea Garden, where you can

learn you how to pick the leaves, roast

them, and make your own tea to take

with you. Our exquisite Longjing tea

gift sets are a part of the West Lake’s

charm you can take home with you.

HOME WORKOUT

BURN OUT CALORIES AT HOME WITH THIS

FULL-BODY HIT WORKOUT ROUTINE

By Ane Ayerbe

There are many days that we

don’t want to go to the gym, or

we just can’t; the gym might be

closed, it might be raining, or

we just got home from work and it’s

too late to go. Whatever the reason

is, I want to propose you a home

workout routine. Therefore, even if the

results we can obtain at home are not

the same as the ones we can obtain

at the gym, we can still get an efficient

and challenging workout.

The workout I’m going to propose

to you, is a full-body routine HIIT.

For those that don’t know what is

a HIIT, this stands for High-Intensity

Interval Training. The intensity in these

workouts means there is little (if any)

downtime built-in. This workout is also

comprised of interval training, which

means exercises are done in bursts.

Here is a quick routine that targets

your entire body in approximately

30 minutes without using weights or

bulky machines.

Ready? Let’s sweat!

HANGZHOU FAMILY

WARM UP

Before starting it’s always important

to warm up the body, so

we will prevent the risk

of injury. For that, make

some mobility stretching.

Once we have warmed up, our body

is ready to burn some calories! The

following nine moves are strength

training exercises. I’ve divided the

nine exercises into three sets of three.

Before you begin each set, set a timer.

Do each exercise as hard as you can

for one minute, followed by the next,

until you complete the first set. Then,

take a one-minute break before

moving onto set 2, and do it again.

PUSH-UPS: Keep a tight

core throughout the entire

pushup. Inhale as you

slowly bend your elbows and

lower yourself until your elbows are

at a 90-degree angle. Exhale as you

begin contracting your chest muscles

and pushing back up through your

hands to the start position. Don't lock

out the elbows; keep them slightly

bent the whole way through.

chest. Quickly switch and pull the left

knee in. At the same, time you push

your right leg back, pull your left knee

in to the chest using the same form.

Continue to switch knees. Pull the

knees in right, left, right, left—always

switching simultaneously as if you

are almost “running” on the spot.

SET 1: SQUATS, REVERSE

LUNGE KNEE LIFT, PUSH-UPS

SQUAT: Plant both feet on the floor

farther than hip-width apart. Point

both feet slightly outward. Bend

your hips and knees, keeping your

knees in line with your toes, until your

thighs are parallel with the floor. Push

through your heels and straighten your

knees to return to the starting position.

REVERSE LUNGE KNEE LIFT: Take a step

back with your left foot, bending both

knees 90° so the knee of your backleg

hovers off the floor. Extend both

knees and transfer your weight onto

your right foot. At the same time, lift

up your left foot, bringing your knee

to your chest. Release your left leg

from your chest and place it back on

the floor. Repeat with the other side.

MOUNTAIN CLIMBERS

JUMPING SIDE SQUATS: Start with your

feet slightly wider than hip distance

and dumbbell in right hand. Take a

step out to the side with your right

foot and sit back into a deep squat.

Let the dumbbell swing back under

the legs then up to chest height while

jumping up switch the dumbbell

to the other hand and come into

a side squat on the other side.

BURPEES: Bend over or squat down

and place your hands on the floor in

front of you, just outside of your feet.

Jump both feet back so that you’re

now in plank position. Drop to a pushup—your

chest should touch the floor.

Push up to return to plank position.

Jump the feet back in toward the

hands. Explosively jump into the air,

reaching your arms straight overhead.

MOUNTAIN CLIMBERS: Start in a plank

position with arms and legs extended.

Keep your abs pulled in and your body

straight. Pull your right knee into your

SET 3: HIGH KNEES, GLUTE

BRIDGE, BENT LEGS ABS

HIGH KNEES: Keeping your weight on

your left foot, bend your right leg

to bring your knee into your chest.

Immediately lower your right leg

and bend your left leg to bring your

knee into your chest. That’s one rep.

GLUTE BRIDGE: Lie on your back with

your hands at your sides, knees bent,

and feet flat on the floor under your

knees. Tighten your abdominal and

buttock muscles by pushing your low

back into the ground before you push

up. Raise your hips to create a straight

line from your knees to shoulders.

Squeeze your core and pull your belly

button back toward your spine.

BENT LEG ABS: Lying on your back with

your arms extended above your head,

draw your belly button toward your

spine to engage your abs, and lift your

legs slightly off the mat. Bring your

knees toward your chest, moving your

arms toward your feet. Slowly lower

your arms and extend your legs to

return to the starting position, without

lowering your feet to the floor.

SPRING MEN’S

Fashion

Trends

With the Coronavirus going around,

Hangzhou has been quiet for a long

time. Everyone is waiting for things

to get back to normal, so they can

change out of the pajamas they

have been wearing for a month and

finally dress to impress, especially

when spring is getting close and the

temperature starts to rise.

By Shine Lee

Here are five spring fashion tips for men, five of the

top trends in 2020 that are also comfortable to wear

and easy to match with other pieces in your closet.

1. Cuban Collar Shirts

Nothing could be better for

escaping that depressing,

month-long lockdown

than the freeing feeling

of wearing a Cuban collar

shirt--if you still are not

feeling free, wear TWO at

the same time. Literally,

every brand has a few

Cuban collar shirts for their

spring/summer product

line, which shows how

popular they are. Especially

with such a huge selection

of patterns, you don’t need

to worry about running

into someone who is

wearing the same shirt

as you. With the breezy

flowered patterns on

your shirt, you will be that

‘ray of summer sunshine’

that everyone is looking

for at this time of year.

2. Over-Sized Blazers

I agree with the old adage

that every man needs at

least one good customtailored

suit, but with

this ‘80s trend, the oversized

blazer is coming

back into fashion again,

just as Balenciaga desires.

Put a t-shirt underneath

and match with a pair of

jeans, and you’ll feel like

you are strolling the streets

with David Bowie’s Ziggy

Stardust playing as your

background music. Be

careful not to wear pants

that are too baggy or long,

otherwise you will look too

short and blocky. The best

advice is to wear ankle

length trousers for this

ensemble. If you don’t have

an oversized blazer like this

then just borrow one from

your dad, they were all

the rage back in the ‘80s.

Show your attitude because

these suits are more than

just serious business.

3. High-Waisted Trousers

Since Alessandro Michele

took over Gucci back in

2015, his idea of bringing

the style of the good old

days back in fashion has

been going strong. And

high-waisted trousers are

one of the iconic pieces

of pre ‘50s classic fashion

that come back around

every few years. Make sure

to tuck in whatever you

are wearing on top--that

goes for sweaters, button-

up shirts and t-shirts,

tuck them all in. It makes

you look taller by a few

centimetres at least, and

shows those women that

men are also proud of our

long legs and are happy to

show them off. If you don’t

have a pair of high-waisted

trousers, you can try

neatly rolling your trousers

legs up a few times; it

creates the same effect of

making you look taller.

4. Cross-Body Bags

Lately, bags are being worn

more for style than function.

You may have noticed

brands are competing to

make the smallest bags.

With no argument the

winner is the one that

kicked off the small bag

trend: Jacquemus. The

smallest of their bags can

only fit one coin or just

one of your Apple AirPods.

But at the same time, it

can certainly fit an outfit

that will hold everyone’s

attention. These days,

with the ease of online

payment methods, few

people bring their wallets

with them when they go

out, so these bags speak to

the ‘minimalism’ of life in

the techno-crazed age. The

cross-body bag is perfect

for the daily belongings

that the modern person

carries along like keys,

earphones, and a few cards.

5. Sunglasses

Most people only wear

sunglasses in summer

thinking they only match

the heat and a can of

cold soda or beer. But

the right sunglasses

can make you forget

the chilly feeling of

spring and start to bring

out the summer vibe.

No matter if you are

wearing a simple single

toned shirt or Cuban

collar shirt, sunglasses

always add depth to

your daily look. With

goggles becoming

popular for protecting

yourself from the virus,

try shield sunglasses.

These futuristic pieces

are the top ocular

accessory of the season.

INDOOR

ACTIVITIES

FOR FAMILIES

AND FRIENDS

By Ane Ayerbe

It’s cold outside, the thought of outdoor

entertainment may require some negotiating with

yourself, a family member or friends. I suggest

indoor games - good for all ages and for two or more

people. And the best part? Everything you need is right

in your home and you probably haven’t even thought

about it. Here are just three suggestions:

1. SENSORY SORTING GAME:

(2 or more players are recommended)

This game trains the mind to focus

on touch and not sight, sound or

smell. It helps with developing

one’s ability to identify surfaces and

objects. It’s a great way to teach kids

2 - 8 years old how to use and or

improve their brain’s touch sensory.

Here’s how you play. You will need

a box; a shoe box is always a good

choice. Cut a hole in the top, big

enough to fit one hand through

the hole, but small enough so that

another person can’t see what’s inside.

Next, without anyone seeing, place

an item in the box and close it. Use

items appropriate for the ages of the

persons playing. Have each player

take turns sticking their hand into the

box while his/her eye is close. Each

person should guess what the item

is, using the description of how the

surface feels (e.g. smooth, rough…),

what is the shape of the object (e.g.

long, square, etc…), and temperature

(hot, cold…). Questions are encouraged

and clues can be offered as needed.

2. THE SOCK GAMES:

(1 or more players are recommended)

SOCK BASKETBALL: You will need

several pairs of socks rolled individually

into balls and a box/waste basket/

any container wide enough to score

with the sock. Next decide where you

will play? Players can be as young as

2 years old to play this game. Pick an

area where there are no breakables or

remove anything that is breakable (also

be aware of sharp objects. e.g a hall

or corridor). This game can get rough

as the excitement to score climbs.

To play each person shoots the

ball (aka sock) into the basket

(aka container), and if they score

they take a step back. The one to

score from the furthest distance

wins. (1 player or more can play)

SOCK HOCKEY: (3 or more

players are recommended)

You will need the same things to

play this game - at least three socks

per person and a goal (this can be

a laundry basket, trash can, storage

box, etc.). Once again remove all sharp

and breakable items. Your hand is

the hockey stick and no helmets are

needed. One person acts as goalie

and stands in front of the goal, while

other players are divided into two

teams attempting to toss their sock

into the goal. The team that gets

most socks in the goal wins. Unlike

regular hockey there is only one goal.

If you have space big enough for two

goals, you can position them opposite

each other as far apart as possible.

3. INDOOR OBSTACLE COURSE:

(2 more players recommended)

This is one game that can be played

depending on age and skill level

of the courses you create; obstacle

courses can be fun games to play with

kindergarten-aged children through

to adults. Here are some ideas for

you to put together, you can add your

own creativity and course order:

• Allow only jumping/crawling/

skipping/dancing from one area

of the course to another.

• Put down couch cushions

and jump from one to the

next or over the cushions.

• Make a tunnel by draping a sheet

over the couch. The players will

crawl through it or under sheets

hung over two chairs. Small children

can crawl under the chairs.

• Perform various exercises like

20 jumping jacks or 10 frog

hops to the next obstacle.

• Toss sock snowballs from the

game into a laundry basket.

• Place stuffed animals and

try to get past them without

being in line with them.

• Crawl under tables.

The most important thing about each

game is to have fun. Put away the

electronic games and spend some

good old-fashioned quality time with

your family or friends of all ages.

It helps to keep everyone active

and gives you the best medicine

for the winter blues, laughter.

HANGZHOU FAMILY

THE CHINESE

COMEDY FILM

OF THE YEAR

By Daniela Gutiérrez

Lost in Russia, which roughly translates

to “Awkward Mom” – 囧 妈 , is a Chinese

comedy that presents an entertaining and

fun perspective of the mother-child relationship in

China during an unexpected trip. The movie follows

the steps of other successful films like Lost in Thailand

(2012) and Lost in Hong Kong (2015).

The plot unfolds on

a train from Beijing

to Russia where

a Chinese mother

and her middle-aged son

must live together for six

days. Along the way a

whole series of unfortunate

situations will occur to join

the family bond between

the main characters. Going

through those several

difficulties to arrive, allows

us as viewers to appreciate

the most relevant aspects

of Chinese society, such

as the influence of the

maternal figure, the deeply

loving nature in the family,

and the social pressure for

marriage, money and kids.

Additionally, there is a

Russian character in the film,

that help us as foreigners

to identify when interacting

with Chinese people, for

example – hope not to spoil

anything – phrases that I

have experienced every day

when walking in Hangzhou,

such as “ 你 的 中 文 说 得 这 么

好 ”– You speak Chinese very

good. I must admit that at

times like those in the film

I lost all composure and

could not stop laughing…

because I have heard that

sentence since I arrived

in this beautiful country

and the only words that I

could say was “ 你 好 ”– Hi –

and “ 谢 谢 ” – Thank you.

I have already lived two

years in Hangzhou, and I still

do not consider myself as a

big fan of Chinese cinema,

however this is definitely

one of the funniest movies I

have seen, because I could

observe from a hilarious and

exaggerated perspective,

situations to which I have

been or heard since I

arrived. Also, if you are

not familiar with Chinese

culture this is definitely

an amazing overview.

Lost in Russia, directed

by and starring comedy

superstar Xu Zheng, is

considered one of the

biggest movies of the

year. However, due to the

coronavirus outbreak, the

film company Huanxi Media

decided to release it online

for free. Therefore, you can

watch it on its in-house

streaming platform Huanxi

Premium or any other

Chinese streaming media.
