You can relax and be surrounded bynature or find your way to a crazy party at a KTV and sing the night away. You can cross the lakeon a boat, go hiking up to Lingyin temple, join any number of group sports or findfriends in a club or association. But when winter comes around, thereis just one thing missing in Hangzhou for me: Skiing.

Most expatsthink that there cannot possiblybe anywhere to ski in the immediatesurroundings of Hangzhou. It is a subtropicalclimate after all—there are stillmosquitos buzzing about in housesthis time of year for goodness sake!Yet, if you have been longing to get someskiing in this season, I have some greatnews for all you Hangzhou skiing andsnowboarding fans. There are 15 placesaround Zhejiang province where you cangrab your skis or board and have some funin the snow. Three of them are indoors but,surprisingly, the others are all outdoors.The only thing you need to do is take a caror hop on a bus to these amazing whitemountains and hills. You don’t even needto have your own equipment. All theseplaces provide basic skiing equipment,from goggles and helmets to skis and skisuits. What if you have never skied before?Don’t worry, there are plenty of tourguides providing different tailored servicesbased on your needs and cover things likebus fares, tour guides and tickets to theslopes. The price depends on the durationof the trip and the time of the year, butnormally ranges from 200 to 500 RMB.Prices naturally spike during holidays.Because the commute can be rather long,and you want to get the most skiing inpossible, most people usually decide to stayone night at a hotel nearby, but the tourgroup I went with said it is possible to askfor a one-day trip to and from Hangzhou.The day trip can often be cheaper as well, asthe most expensive things are the transportand the accommodation. If you have a lowbudget there are still good options opento you. Some of the parks in the north ofZhejiang are very cheap, and you can ski fora day or two there for just 200 to 300 RMB.Daming Mountain Skiing (dà míng shānhúa xǔe - 大明山滑雪 ) is the closet place toHangzhou.
