Valentine’s Day is one of those
magical days that can really
bring a couple together. This
year the 14th of February
happens to fall on a Friday, and what
could be better than a quick weekend
escape with your better half? Even if
you don’t happen to a significant other
in your life, it’s still a great weekend to
escape the lonely singles blues with
your best friends. Since Shanghai will
be crowded and overbooked for sure,
there are plenty of beautiful places
close to Hangzhou that you can run
off to instead. Here is a list of our picks
for the best spots for a short getaway.

In just an hour and a half, you can reach
the highly visited garden city of East China,
Suzhou. Book a hotel in the magical old
town and get lost in its winding alleys
along the river. Suzhou is certainly a place
where the mystery of old China meets
the wonder of the new. From the classical
sprawling gardens, (UNESCO heritage
sites), to the swanky new Suzhou district
( 苏 州 新 区 ) it has a bit of everything
to keep you walking hand-in-hand.

SUGGESTION: Have a drink at
the bar in Zifeng Tower
The “Southern Capital,” was the national
capital of various Chinese dynasties and is
a historical and cultural fulcrum in the Pearl
River Delta region. Some places not to miss
are the Nanjing Library, Nanjing Museum
and Nanjing Art Museum. Nanjing has also
one of the tallest towers in the world, Zifeng
Tower, where there’s a public observatory
(72F), but we recommend choosing one of
the fancy bars and enjoying a drink while
gazing out onto the stunning city skyline.
