Struggle ahead for Selwyn teams
• By Jacob Page
SELWYN-BASED teams have
a bit of work to do to make the
play-offs of the Canterbury
Country 45-over premier cricket
competition in six weeks time.
Only competition leaders
Leeston-Southbridge are in the
top four after round nine on
Saturday.
Southbrook, Oxford and Cheviot
round out the top four with
five rounds to go.
Darfield, Weedons and Lincoln
sit sixth, seventh and eighth
respectively.
Three centuries and a last ball
thriller were the highlights of the
weekend.
Leeston-Southbridge’s Rupert
Young hit 101 at Weedons Domain
to help his team reclaim
the Steve Ryan Cup against
Weedons by 68 runs.
Leeston-Southbridge made
276 for four with Harry Chamberlain
and captain Toby Doyle
both hitting half centuries in
support of Young.
Doyle said Young was ruthless
square of the wicket and he was
thrilled to win back the cup
which is played for between the
two teams and Lincoln.
“Rupert is a very compact
player but he punished anything
short and we were able to set a
platform for him,” Doyle said.
Lincoln lost a heart-breaker by
one wicket to Cheviot who were
able to chase down their target of
295 off the final ball, at Cheviot
Domain.
Lincoln’s Joe Williams
smashed 126 but his effort was
upstaged by Cheviot’s Will
Hamilton who hit 134.
Darfield’s batsmen stepped up
at Pearson Park to beat Oxford
by six wickets.
Nick Jenkins led the pursuit of
164 with an unbeaten 53.
Darfield coach Shannon
McAleer praised his team’s
bowling effort.
SPORT
“We were able to keep the ball
full and straight and take away
the short square boundaries.
“We composed ourselves well
in the chase of a total which
required a solid start.
“If you lose three wickets, a
scored of 160 can look bigger
than it actually is, so I thought
we did well.”
Southbrook were able to maintain
second place on the ladder
behind Leeston-Southbridge
but they needed their bowlers to
pick up their batsmen in a lowscoring
20-run win over Sefton.
Southbrook scrambled to 129
all out at Sefton Domain, thanks
largely to an unbeaten 49 from
Shanan Stewart.
Five wickets from Arafat
Bhuiyan and three for 25 from
Jonathan Green saw Sefton go
from 75 for three to 109 all out.
Round 10 this week will see
Lincoln host Weedons with both
teams keen to improve their topfour
chances.
Leeston-Southbridge will host
Sefton.
Second will play third when
Oxford play Southbrook and
Cheviot will travel to play
Darfield.
Points – Leeston 56,
Southbrook 52, Oxford 44,
Cheviot 40, Sefton 32, Darfield
24, Weedons 24, Lincoln 16.
Knockout
match for
twenty20
competition
• By Jacob Page
LEESTON-Southbridge will
play Lancaster Park in the
Canterbury final of the national
twenty20 knockout competition
on Sunday.
Captain Toby Doyle said he
was thrilled with his team’s
eight-wicket win against Pleasant
Point in the opening round fixture
prior to Christmas at Main
Power Oval, and hoped the form
would carry over.
“There’s no doubt we will be
big underdogs in this one but
twenty20 is the type of format
where things can change quite
quickly.’’
Much will rely on Harry Chamberlain
and Tim Gruijters who
both contributed with bat and
ball in the opening round win.
Meanwhile, the Canterbury
Country primary school team
finished sixth at the South Island
tournament at Westport, on
Friday.
Canterbury Country lost to
Canterbury Metro Black in the
play-off for fifth to conclude their
week as they were unable to defend
210, losing by six wickets.
Christchurch Metro Red won
the tournament, beating Nelson
by 10 wickets in the final to claim
the Sir Jack Newman Trophy.
