Hororata event planned
for Australian bush fires

Kimber has organised a
community event in a bid to raise
money for the Australian bush
fires.
She was inspired to do something
to help the rural communities
who have suffered.
“Like many people I have found
it hard to watch the disaster
unfolding in Australia and really
want to do something to help.
“So I’ve called on my musical
friends and a number of other
Hororata locals to put together
a fundraising concert,” said
Kimber.
A number of musicians will
perform at the planned event,
including Kimber’s band Chilton
House and blues band the South
Street Trio.
All proceeds from the event will
go to the BHR Fire Disaster and
Drought Appeal administered by
the Rotary Club of Sydney.
The fund is used to support
farmers impacted by the fires by
organising food for stock and
supplies for people.
Kimber began her career as a
musician at age 16 with a gig at
Lyttleton’s Wunderbar.

Now, she regularly performs at
Christchurch live music hot spots
showcasing her soulful singing
and guitar playing or performing
with her rock party band.
She has taught and performed
music at a summer camp in New
York City before settling down to
study at Ara Music Arts.
• The concert will be held in
the Hororata Domain this Sunday,
4pm–7pm. Entry will be
$10 per adult, children under
15 free. Cash only at the gate.

Libraries helping
rescue efforts
RESIDENTS ARE being invited
to help rescue efforts for wildlife
caught in the Australian bush fires.
A campaign launched by Selwyn
Libraries aims to send supplies
of pouches, wraps and nests.
Libraries at Lincoln, Rolleston,
Leeston and Darfield are opening
their doors for people to come in
and help make the items.
Patterns, materials and sewing
machines will be available to use.
Arts, culture and lifelong learning
manager Nicki Moen said
staff became aware of the Animal
Rescue Craft Guild’s plight and
decided they could help.
“One of the things we can do
is give practical assistance, by
knitting and sewing pouches

and wraps that will directly help
rehabilitate animals injured in
the wildfires.” Nicki says.
“People have been really
touched by the plight of these
animals, and the organisations
that are struggling to keep up
with the scale of the devastation.
Residents can also make items
at home, pattern and sewing requirements
can be found online,
or check the Selwyn Libraries
Facebook page, and drop them
off at the library.
Donations of soft natural fibres,
such as flannelette cotton, are
also being accepted.
The project will continue as
long as the demand for items
remains.
