SELWYN TIMES Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Wednesday January 15 2020 11 News Quarter century of firefighting recognised • By Devon Bolger WHEN JEREMY Greenwood began volunteer firefighting at 17 he never imagined completing 25 years of service. Now the Lincoln chief fire officer has received a gold star pin for doing just that. Mr Greenwood said it was a very proud moment. “I remember thinking when I first joined, how does anyone ever complete 25 years? It seemed such a long time away but now that I’ve done it I feel it has gone very quickly. “I could have never done it though without the unconditional support of my wife Carol and family,” he said. He had always been very interested in the fire brigade, even from a young age. “We had family friends involved and I remember the excitement as they took off when the siren sounded. I would try to negotiate with my parents to follow the fire engines to see the action. “As soon as I was old COMMENDED: Lincoln chief fire officer Jeremy Greenwood (right) receiving his gold star pin for 25 years of service from United Fire Brigades Association former president Alan Kiltelty. enough and left school I joined the Southbridge Brigade. The Friends of Ellesmere Hospital are hosting the event at the hospital grounds in Leeston next month. The group is made up of locals who support the staff and patients at the hospital by providing financial and other input to the day-today running of the facility. Treasurer Geoff Lill said the event is to make the community more aware of the facility and its importance. “Our hospital building is well overdue for some much-needed TLC. We have been working with the CDHB in an endeavour to get a fresh coat of paint and a new roof to make sure that the hospital lasts another 95 years.” Entry is free and there will be food, crafts, entertainment, fun for the kids and an opportunity to familiarise yourself with the facility, he said. Ellesmere Hospital is owned, staffed and funded by the Canterbury District that have stuck in his mind. “The earthquakes and the recent Port Hills fires would be at the forefront. On both occasions, the brigade was heavily involved in operations. “The hardest calls I have attended are accidents involving children, especially when they are a similar age to your own. The great support we have within the brigade and FENZ as a whole certainly helps get us through.” He will keep firefighting for “as long as I still enjoy it,” Mr Greenwood said. “We have a great team at the Lincoln Brigade and are pretty proud of what we have achieved over the last few years so the goal is to ensure we continue doing what we do well.” Gala planned for Ellesmere Hospital Health Board. The hospital provides care to Selwyn based patients needing respite and post-operative and rehabilitation support, along with end of life care. It opened on October 1 1924, as a general hospital with an annex for maternity. • The Friends of Ellesmere Hospital gala event will be held on February 9 in the hospital grounds on Cunningham St. For more info visit the group’s Facebook page. favourite fashion store FASHION QUARTERLY JANUARY 2020 Happy New Year, wishing you all a fantastic 2020.
