16 Wednesday January 15 2020 Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz SELWYN TIMES Lincoln driver runs hot into Chili Bowl • By Allan Batt SPEEDWAY DRIVER Jeremy Webb will head into the Chili Bowl in Tulsa, Oklahoma, today after a dominant past month on the track. The 28-year-old from Lincoln has continued to build on his impressive CV by successfully defending his New Zealand TQ midget title up at Western Springs in Auckland and has now won the storied event for three successive years. He then stepped up to his full sized midget and finished fourth in the World Thirty Lap Derby at the same track. In mid- December he won his second South Island title in his Esslinger powered midget. The Chili Bowl – a midget car race held on an indoor 400m dirt track, is his next target. This event, which has attracted more than 250 entries, is considered by many to be the world’s most prestigious midget car race. Webb has been secured by the Clausen-Marshall organisations which is one of America’s premier teams. Webb’s ride is a fully sponsored one and his participation underlines the high regard that he is held in within speedway circles. The Chili Bowl is held in such esteem within auto racing circles that NASCAR, Indy Car and drag race drivers join their dirt track counterparts for a slice of the glory. At the completion of the Chili Bowl, Webb will fly home to participate in the 78 th New Zealand Midget Car Championship at Ruapuna on January 24 and 25. This event is already shaping up to be the biggest midget car meeting in Ruapuna’s 59 seasons with 45 entries, including the current USA Champion Tyler Courtney, three other Americans, former Australian Kaydon Brown, eight time and current New Zealand champion Michael US HOPES: Lincoln’s Jeremy Webb will race in today’s Chili Bowl in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Ruapuna Speedway president Allan Daly said Webb’s form along with his participation in the Chili Bowl will set him up for a strong showing at the nationals. “Jeremy is an exceedingly talented racer and we really are excited about his future. We have been blown away by the strong entry list for the New Zealand championship. In some ways it’s almost a world championship of New Zealand and Jeremy will be primed for this one. I’m confident that all of our boys are set for a strong showing but Jeremy certainly has an advantage with his strong build up.” • By Jacob Page ROAD CYCLIST Bailey O’Donnell will be part of the national team that will contest the New Zealand Cycle Classic this week. The 19-year-old from Prebbleton had a two-month stint racing on the roads of Belgium last year, an opportunity organised by former New Zealand cyclist Hayden Roulston. O’Donnell won a 100km race, often referred to as a kermesse, in Deinze, west of Flanders in August. The five-day race in the Wairarapa will conclude on Saturday. There will be 108 riders competing, they represent 18 teams from 12 countries including Australia, France, Great Britain, Guam, Japan, Malaysia, Malta, Moldova, Netherlands, New Zealand, Romania and Taiwan. The event will see riders complete a total of 668.6km over five stages. O’Donnell said he was keen to make an impression during the event and spend more time in Europe this year. “I’ve decided to totally focus on the road this year and if you do well in this event, scouts can see you and that’s how you get opportunities.” SPORT O’Donnell to compete in NZ Cycle Classic TALENTED: Bailey O’Donnell. pictured winning a race in Europe in August last year, will compete in the New Zealand Cycle Classic this week.
