Waipara mātaitai reserve application, Hurunui, <strong>Canterbury</strong><br />

Pursuant to Regulation17of the Fisheries(South Island Customary Fishing) Regulations<br />

1999, Te Ngāi Tū AhuririRūnanga Inc. haveapplied for amātaitai reserve along the<br />

coastline at the Waipara River mouth, Hurunui, <strong>Canterbury</strong>.<br />

Proposed Waipara mātaitai reserve<br />

The approximate area of theproposed mātaitai reserve extends northward from the end<br />

of GolfLinks Road, along the coastline for 5.6km,and offshore 1km. It covers those South<br />

Island fisheries waterswithin the following lines:<br />

(a) From the startingpoint on the meanhigh-water mark at 43°7.945’S and 172°50.614’E;<br />

then<br />

(b) By astraightline in asouth-easterly direction for approximately one kilometre to a<br />

pointoffshore at 43°8.417’Sand 172°50.971’E; then<br />

(c) By aline in agenerally south-westerly direction, for approximately4.8 kilometres, to a<br />

pointoffshore at 43°9.747’S and 172°48.280’E; then<br />

(d) By astraightline in anorth-westerlydirectionfor approximatelyone kilometretoa<br />

pointonthe mean high-water markat43°9.431’Sand 172°47.679’E (approximately at<br />

the end of Golf Links Road); then<br />

(e) By aline in generally north-easterly direction along the mean high-water mark to the<br />

starting point.<br />

Amātaitai reserveisanidentified traditionalfishing ground and is established for the<br />

purposeofcustomary food gathering.Mātaitai reserves are limited to fisheries waters and<br />

do not include any land area.<br />

Te Ngāi Tū Ahuriri RūnangaInc. and FisheriesNew Zealand have previously consulted<br />

with the local community on the application.<br />

Pursuant to Regulation19(5), this notice outlinesthe detailofthe application and invites<br />

written or electronic submissionsabout the fish stocks in the area specified in the<br />

application from persons who take fish, aquatic life, or seaweed or own quota, and whose<br />

ability to take suchfish, aquatic life, or seaweed or whose ownership interest in quota may<br />

be affected by the proposedmātaitai reserve.<br />
