Australian firefighters
By RACHEL MACDONALD
North Canterbury is on a
crusade to help those fighting
Australia’s disastrous bushfires.
Cust hairdresser Amy
Roberts’ proposaltoopen her
salon,Cedar Heights, this
Sundaytocut hair in exchange
for donations to help the
much larger initiative,asother
businessesand the village’s
volunteerfire brigade rally to
the cause.
‘‘My husband,Jeremy,was at
training lastweek up at the fire
station, and Iwas watching the
TV news of the fires. It really got
to me,’’ Amy says.
‘‘I see how exhausted our guys
get when they’re out there for a
few hours; these Australian
volunteerfirefighters are
holding downtheir payingjobs,
then getting out there day after
day to help with the fire effort as
well.’’
FellowhairdresserEmma
Small immediately said she
would be there to help, closely
followed by DonnaCoster from
The Sunroom in Oxford.
‘‘Suddenly, we had three
hairdressersinonthe
fundraiser,which is lucky
because there’s beensomuch
interest,Icouldn’t do all the
cutting myself.
‘‘ThenJeremy mentioned it at
the fire station and the idea of a
goldcoin sausage sizzle
emerged, to give people
something to do while they
waitedfor their haircut.Hellers
and Love Ya Fudgecame on
board with that,’’ she says.
‘‘Other hairdressers, who
couldn’t be here, donated
vouchers and abig gift basket,
and out of that,overnight, we
had the start of araffle.’’
There are now 41
Waimakaririlocals and
businesseswho will be partof
the day itself and the sizeable
raffle, which willbedrawn at
the end of nextweek. Raffle
tickets are already available
through CedarHeights,The
Lads and Route 72 in Cust.
On Sunday,from 10am to 4pm,
haircuts and blowwaveswill be
the orderofthe day at the salon
on afirstin, firstserved basis.
Those interested are asked to
come along withclean hair and
adonation in their pocket, says
Amy.
All funds raised from the day’s
activities and the rafflewill be
sent directly to rural fire
services in someofthe towns
worst affected by the disaster,
Jeremysays.
‘‘Our childrenhave donated
the $10 they earned last
weekend in pocket money.
That’senough to buy atray of
water for the guys on the front
line, and that’s what this is all
about.’’
Online flurry over
pool pricing dies
By ROBYN BRISTOW
Anew pricing structure at
the Hanmer Springs
Thermal Pools and Spa,
initially slammed on social
media, has not stopped
people from enjoying the
facility.
General manager
Graeme Abbot
says numbers
over the
Christmas
period from
Boxing Day to
January 10 had
grown 8percent.
‘‘We are
delighted. Alot
of customers
have come
through and had
agood time.’’
The new pricing
schedule includes the use
of the outdoor complex,
including 22 thermal pools
and four waterslides.
Single entry is $35 for an
adult, $20 for children, with
under 5s free. Mini groups
(two adults and up to three
children) are $89, and
seniors (60+) are $22.
Mr Abbot says there has
been no real pushback from
customers at the front desk.
He says although there was
some social media chat it
had died down, and it was
business as usual at the
pools.
Mr Abbot says
the whole town
has been
buzzing over the
holidays.
‘‘Anecdotally,
it is the busiest
it has been for a
number of
years,’’ he says.
‘‘The
supermarket,
restaurants and
accommodation guys over
the past couple of weeks
are all having apretty good
time.’’
Mr Abbot, who is also
Hurunui Tourism product
development manager, says
he is keen to ensure the
town proves popular
because everybody then
