Cust hairdresser Amy Roberts’ proposaltoopen her salon,Cedar Heights, this Sundaytocut hair in exchange for donations to help the firefightershas ballooned intoa much larger initiative,asother businessesand the village’s volunteerfire brigade rally to the cause. ‘‘My husband,Jeremy,was at training lastweek up at the fire station, and Iwas watching the TV news of the fires. It really got to me,’’ Amy says. ‘‘I see how exhausted our guys get when they’re out there for a few hours; these Australian volunteerfirefighters are holding downtheir payingjobs, then getting out there day after day to help with the fire effort as well.’’ FellowhairdresserEmma Small immediately said she would be there to help, closely followed by DonnaCoster from The Sunroom in Oxford. ‘‘Suddenly, we had three hairdressersinonthe fundraiser,which is lucky because there’s beensomuch interest,Icouldn’t do all the cutting myself. ‘‘ThenJeremy mentioned it at the fire station and the idea of a goldcoin sausage sizzle emerged, to give people something to do while they waitedfor their haircut.Hellers and Love Ya Fudgecame on board with that,’’ she says. ‘‘Other hairdressers, who couldn’t be here, donated vouchers and abig gift basket, and out of that,overnight, we had the start of araffle.’’ There are now 41 Waimakaririlocals and businesseswho will be partof the day itself and the sizeable raffle, which willbedrawn at the end of nextweek. Raffle tickets are already available through CedarHeights,The Lads and Route 72 in Cust. On Sunday,from 10am to 4pm, haircuts and blowwaveswill be the orderofthe day at the salon on afirstin, firstserved basis. Those interested are asked to come along withclean hair and adonation in their pocket, says Amy. All funds raised from the day’s activities and the rafflewill be sent directly to rural fire services in someofthe towns worst affected by the disaster, Jeremysays. ‘‘Our childrenhave donated the $10 they earned last weekend in pocket money. That’senough to buy atray of water for the guys on the front line, and that’s what this is all about.’’ Pitching in ... General manager Graeme Abbot says numbers over the Christmas period from Boxing Day to <strong>January</strong> 10 had grown 8percent. ‘‘We are delighted.
