ROLLESTON-Killinchy’s
Ben Smith claimed the
Ellesmere Open singles
tennis title at Lincoln on
Sunday.
Smith beat defending
champion Wilton Atkins
(Rolleston) 7-5 6-4.
Smith had cruised
past Dunsandel’s Simon
Barnett in the semi-finals
6-1 6-0, while Atkins had
a similar victory over clubmate
Ryan Vincent 6-1 6-2.
Smith had been in strong
form as one of the leading
lights for Rolleston-
Killinchy in the club competition
before Christmas
and he will be relied upon
again when the competition
gets under way again
this Saturday after a fourweek
break.
WEST MELTON’S Tegan
the National Grand Prix
Horse Championship at
the National Equestrian
Christchurch, on Sunday.
The pressure was therefore
on Fitzsimon for the
last round and there was
to win the men’s doubles
A grade final with a 6-3
Rolleston duo of Vincent
and James Penny.
John Rodley and Roger
Langford from Hornby
won the B grade men’s
over Dunsandel duo Sam
and Simon Barnett.
in the women’s B grade
doubles final with a 7-5
6-4 triumph of the Hornby
Rodley.
Carr and Hamish
Walker were victorious in
the B grade mixed doubles
with a 9-2 win over Langford
No women’s A grade
singles or doubles competitions
were played due to a
lack of entries.
Fitzsimon rides to another victory
no room for error.
Wellington’s Sophie
Scott and Lakota had
jumped a clear round in
the fifth and final round,
so Fitzsimon, who was
last to go, knew she had to
deliver another clear round
to win.
Fitzsimon and her horse
nicknamed Vollie delivered
to defend the title they won
“There was a bit of pressure
on going into the last
round but Vollie pushed
on.
“He is just phenomenal,
He gives me 110 per cent
each time,’’ Fitzsimon said.
The victory comes three
weeks after the 29-year-old
notched back-to-back wins
in the World Cup Series.
She continues to ponder
whether she will compete
at the world finals in Las
Vegas in April.
