Up to $100,000 of
goods stolen in break-in
• By Devon Bolger
A JETBOAT and karts are
among the up to $100,000
of items stolen from a
property in Coalgate.
Businessman Allan
Rhodes and his partner
Lisa Bullock are offering a
$5000 reward for information
leading to the conviction
of the offenders and
return of the items.
The items were stolen
from a warehouse they
own in Bridge St.
“We’ve had a lot of
burglaries over the years
but his one is the worst.
They have taken anywhere
between $60,000-$100,000
of stuff,” he said.
•The reward will
be available on
information given to
hamish.caird@police.
The list of items taken
includes a Yamaha jetboat,
a six-wheel-drive Argo,
four karts and a large red
off-road buggy.
Mr Rhodes was the
owner of the well-known
Hororata Homestead
which was badly damaged
in the September 4, 2010,
earthquake.
The 7.1 magnitude quake
tipped his son Xavier
Trousselot-Rhode out of
his first-floor bedroom and
onto the ground outside.
The historic homestead
was later demolished and
the property sold.
Mr Rhodes was called in
early January by a Bridge
St resident who said the
warehouse had been broken
into.
“He said: ‘Your locks
have been cut’. He went
and put some brand new
locks on for us and then
the next morning he rung
and said they had been cut
again.
“There’s lots and lots
of gear that’s been taken,
some we haven’t been able
to list. Well over 30 years
of collection of different
things we have.”
The annual Teddy Bears’ Picnic drew in a big crowd last Wednesday. More
than 1200 people plus their teddies turned up to take part in the festivities at the
Rolleston Reserve and Community Centre. The event was a part of the district
council’s Summer in Selwyn programme. A spokeswoman said: “Children
enjoyed face painting, the pedalmania bikes, and jumping on the bouncy
castles amongst other fun activities. The teddy bear parade was a highlight for
many and the biggest in the event’s history to date.”
