HOME PROFESSIONALS
Puppy proofing your home
and garden
A cute puppy may have arrived on your doorstep as a
special Christmas present for your family and that new
arrival will herald some changes in how your household
is run, ensuring that not only is the puppy safe but so are
your belongings.
Puppy proofing your home
is very much like baby
proofing except the canine
version is more
curious, active and
can be destructive,
wanting to
explore and play
with everything
in sight.
First up, and
this may sound
a bit strange,
but have a look
around your
home and garden
as if you were
puppy-sized and
extremely inquisitive
to prevent any potentially
dangerous situations.
Create an environment where more time is
spent where they are praised and loved than being told
off. And protect your home and possessions. They have
very sharp teeth and paws and the most simple
thing like library books on a coffee table
can be fair game so put everything you think
is precious or hazardous to your new friend
out of reach and keep doors closed to parts
of the house that you don’t want destroyed.
Investing in some baby gates to restrict access
is another option.
A good selection of chew toys is essential
as they help with teething, keep your
puppy busy and help promote chewing
on the right things rather than your belongings.
Consider crate training so they have a confined
space to keep them safe and out of trouble,
particularly
at night.
There is plenty
of information
about how to
do this on the
internet or check
with your vet.
Check which plants
you have both inside
and outside. Surprisingly
many are toxic and
karaka tree berries can
be fatal. Others include
common plants like lilies,
ivy, daffodils (especially the bulbs), some species of ivy
and aloe vera. Again check online, with the SPCA or your
vet for more information.
It can be tempting to give your puppy treats but there
are lots of human foods that
are potentially hazardous for
dogs. Chocolate and caffeine
are obvious and well known
but onions, chives, grapes and
raisins, along with mouldy
food, can also be toxic.
With a bit of preparation,
your puppy and your family
will enjoy a happy life together
and your home, possessions,
garden and new friend
will all remain intact.
