CLTA NEWSLETTER January 2020
In the summer of 2019 (June 24th to July 12th, 2019), the Chinese program at the
University of Pittsburgh
successfully ran its first
“CoolChinese”
Language & Culture
Summer Camp. The
summer camp, jointly
sponsored by the
Department of East
Asian Languages &
Literatures and the
Confucius Institute at
the University of
Pittsburgh, offered
language and culture
immersion
opportunities to ten
local high school
students with varying socioeconomic and racial/ethnic background. With raving feedback and
requests from students and parents, Pitt Chinese program is planning to host CoolChinese Summer
Camp for a second time, during June 22nd to July 10th, 2020.
The summer camp aims to help 9th to 11th graders who have little or no prior background of Chinese
to learn about the language and its culture. Students work with an outstanding instructional team of
full-time language instructors, cultural and physical activity leaders, and native speaker language
partners. The camp runs on a
standard-based thematic
curriculum aligned with
American Council on the
Teaching of Foreign
Languages’ World-Readiness
Standards. Students’ language
proficiency is measured with
summative assessment
methods through the
contextual tasks and projects.
At the end of the
CoolChinese Summer Camp
2019, students were not only
able to converse on
predictable topics of daily
routine and hobbies, but
also acquired an
understanding of various
aspects of the Chinese
culture. Language activities
were always woven in
together with culture and
content knowledge
learning. Different from
classroom practices in the
traditional context,
students were always
engaged in “learning by
doing.” One topic that
they learned was the
Chinese culinary tradition. Students purchased food from Chinese grocery stores, cooked Chinesestyle
hotpot by themselves, learned about traditional Chinese table-manners, and ordered bubble teas
customized with their dietary preferences. Pictures below showed some of these learning activities,
including students’ Beijing Opera mask painting, traditional paper-cutting, Chinese food preparation,
Tai Chi practice, etc.
By hosting a series of summer camps for high school students in the Greater Pittsburgh region in the
recent years, Pitt Chinese Program hopes to help strengthen the ties between students and educators
of Chinese in the K12 and college context. In the long run, they envision to work with other members
of the community to establish a pipeline of Chinese language and culture instruction from secondary
schools to college. Some of
their recent community
outreach activities also
include working with local
libraries and daycare
centers for Chinese storytime
and after-program
activities.
The video included here
shows what students from
CoolChinese summer camp
say about this unique
experience.
Luo, H., & Gui, M. (2019) Developing an effective Chinese-American telecollaborative learning program:
an action research study, Computer Assisted Language Learning, DOI: 10.1080/09588221.2019.1633355
Despite the rapid development of telecollaboration in foreign language education in the past twenty years,
telecollaborative exchanges involving Chinese as the target language have not received sufficient attention
both at the practice and at the research level. Adopting an action research approach, this study focuses on
examining the student perceptions as well as the challenges of a carefully designed Chinese-American
telecollaborative learning program involving Chinese as a foreign language (CFL) students of two
proficiency levels (i.e., beginning and intermediate) at a small liberal arts college in the U.S. and Chinesespeaking
English majors at a large university in China.
Lü, Chan (In press). Teaching and learning Chinese through immersion: A case study of the North
American context. Frontiers of Education in China (Special issue, The teaching and learning of Chinese
as a second or foreign language (CSL/CFL): The current situation and future directions)
With the promise of achieving bilingualism, biliteracy, and cultural pluralism, Chinese immersion
programs for Kindergarten to 12 th (K -12) students in North America, especially the United States, have
been proliferating in the past two decades. Research on this rapidly growing population of nonnative
Chinese learners is also growing. This research synthesis focused on 35 qualified studies published in
recent years on Chinese immersion in both Chinese and English language journals and books. The review
found that researchers are exploring a wide range of issues with respect to language and literacy
development in Chinese immersion programs, including academic achievement in English, language and literacy acquisition
in Chinese, instructional strategies and classroom interaction, and learners’ language use and its sociolinguistic variation.
These studies reflect the growing interest and demand in learning more about the lesser-researched CFL learner population,
and this review concluded with suggestions for future research on Chinese immersion based on its curricular features as well
as specific considerations of conducting research with young, emergent bilingual and biliterate learners.
analysis. In Li, S. & Yuan, F. (Eds.) Classroom-Based Research on Chinese as a second
language (pp.128-151). New York: Routledge
This study presents a Bayesian analysis of the effects of blogging on heritage writing anxiety.
Results from both within and between-subject experiments corroboratively showed that online
writing can lower heritage learners’ writing anxiety. However, it had on effect on learners’
cognitive anxiety, one of the sub-dimensions of writing anxiety.
Zhang, H. (2019). Teaching Chinese tones. In Chris Shei, Monica E. McLellan Zikpi, and Der-lin Chao
(Eds). The Routledge Handbook of Chinese Language Teaching, p.166-179. Abingdon and New York:
Routledge.
This paper discusses teaching Chinese lexical tones, a prominent linguistic feature of the Chinese sound
system, to adult learners. The chapter includes three sections. The first briefly introduces the linguistic
properties of Chinese lexical tones. Focusing on the most difficult Tone 3, the second section reviews
research findings on second language acquisition of Chinese tones in order to shed light on tone
teaching. In order to facilitate effective tone teaching and learning, the third section offers pedagogical
suggestions and three sets of sample tone training materials for instructors to help learners establish the
phonological representation of Chinese lexical tones and develop motor skills for tone implementation.
Zhang, H. (2019). The positional effects of contour tones in second language Chinese. In Zhang, H-M.
and Qian, Youyong (ed.) Prosodic Studies: Challenges and Prospects. Routledge.
ABSTRACT: This study investigates the errors made by 60 English, Japanese, and Korean speaking
learners of Chinese when producing the two contour lexical tones T2 (rising tone) and T4 (falling tone)
in disyllabic words. It finds that T2 is produced at a greater rate of accuracy in word-initial positions,
while T4 is produced at a greater rate of accuracy in word-final positions. Two inter-tonal effects shared
across the three groups of speakers were also observed:1) the accuracy rate of T2 is always greater
when it is followed by tones with low onsets than when it is followed by tones with high onsets, and 2)
the accuracy rate of T4 is always greater when it is followed by low tones than when it is followed by
other tones. The study presents evidence suggesting that second language tones are partially constrained by anticipatory
dissimilation.
Xu, HY., Li, Y., & Li, YJ. (2019) Using online applications to improve tone perception among L2
learners of Chinese. Journal of Technology and Chinese Language Teaching. Volume 10, 26-56
This study investigated the effectiveness of an online application in helping beginning-level Chinese
learners improve their perception of the tones in Mandarin Chinese. Two groups-one experimental and
one traditional-of beginning Chinese learners from two universities in the Midwest participated in this
study. The experimental group (n=20) used the online application to practice tones for four 15-minute
sessions in class. The traditional group (n=11) participated in traditional instructor-led practice in class
in lieu of the online practice. Both groups completed a pre-test, an immediately administered post-test,
and a delayed post-test designed to assess their perception of the tones of monosyllabic and disyllabic
words. No statistically significant difference has been found between the two groups in their tone perception performance in
the post-test and in the delayed post-test. However, the experimental group showed a positive trend in improving their
perception on those tones which posed more difficulty than others. Based on the findings, it is proposed that the use of
online tone practice is worthwhile in a Chinese language class, but might fit better into the curriculum as external
assignments.
第 六 届 语 言 学 与 汉 语 教 学 国 际 论 坛
October 9-12, 2020
Stanford University Co-organized
with
The Chinese Language Teachers Association of California (CLTAC) City
University of Hong Kong
Background and Purposes
The International Forum on Linguistics and Chinese Education (IFOLCE) is organized as an annual conference
dedicated to exploring and promoting application of the latest linguistic research findings to the field of Teaching
Chinese as a Second Language. The establishment of IFOLCE originally resulted from a joint-effort of a group of
colleagues in the field from eight universities in the United States, Beijing, and Hong Kong. Debuting in 2015, the
IFOLCE annual forum has been held rotationally among the five locations with each having two co-organizers.
IFOLCE-1 was held at University of California at Davis (co-organizer Columbia University), IFOLCE-2 at Beijing
Language and Culture University (co-organizer Peking University), IFOLCE-3 at Notre Dame University (coorganizer
Princeton University), IFOLCE-4 at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (co-organizer Stanford
University), and IFOLCE-5 at Columbia University (co-organizer UC-Davis). IFOLCE-6 will be held at Stanford
University with two co-organizers, the Chinese Language Teachers Association of California (CLTAC) and City
University of Hong Kong.
It has been recognized for a long time that linguistic studies play an important role in second language teaching.
As observed in the great tradition pioneered by Yuen Ren Chao and others, Chinese L2 teaching should be
placed on a solid basis of Chinese linguistics. With such an understanding, IFOLCE is intended to serve as a
premier forum, inviting scholars from around the world to exchange their latest research insights on new advances
in linguistic studies to enhance our work in teaching Chinese a second language.
Host an ALLEX Teaching Fellow or Instructor at Your
Institution
We provide professionally trained Chinese, Japanese and Korean teaching fellows and instructors to
universities who teach in exchange for financial support to take courses.
ALLEX (Alliance for Language Learning and Educational Exchange) will provide your institution with a
professionally trained native speaking teaching fellow or instructor who will teach for two years in
exchange for financial support to pursue a Master's or second Bachelor's degree.
Alternatively, for institutions which already have established Asian language programs, the ALLEX
Foundation also offers a one-year option designed as a cost-effective way to expand course offerings, add
drill instructors, staff adjunct positions, or replace faculty on leave. Teaching Fellows in the one-year plan
teach in exchange for room, board and tuition to take one or two classes, either for credit or as auditors.
They are not degree seeking.
This program has run successfully since 1988 at more than 230 universities all over the U.S. Schools
currently using ALLEX instructors include Boston University, Colby College, Florida Institute of
Technology, Hamilton College, Indiana University Bloomington, Portland State University, Texas Tech
University, Union College, University of Iowa, University of Kentucky, University of Mississippi,
University of Utah, Vanderbilt University, and Wellesley College.
The distinctive feature of the ALLEX program is the 7 weeks of Chinese, Japanese or Korean language
teacher training that our teaching fellows and instructors undergo at Washington University in St. Louis
during the summer before they begin teaching. It is taught by some of the nation’s foremost experts in
Asian language pedagogy, with faculty drawn from Cornell, M.I.T., Ohio State, Washington University
in St. Louis, and Williams College.
The ALLEX admission process is rigorous and selective: we personally interview all of the candidates in
Taiwan, China, Japan and Korea, and only about 15-20% of applicants are admitted to the
program. ALLEX instructors are bright, dynamic native speakers of their language with very good
English skills. Once we make the assignment, you have the final say in accepting or rejecting the
candidate we recommend to you.
