Aims and Scope 

Initiated by the Chinese Language Teachers Association, USA (CLTA-USA), the 

journal K-12 Chinese Language Teaching (K-12 CLT) aims to serve and link 

preschool and K-12 Chinese language instructors, immersion and Chinese 

heritage language instructors, Chinese language teacher educators, pedagogy 

researchers, program leaders and policymakers. The K-12 CLT focuses on 

sharing experiences and exchanging ideas in teaching, research and professional 

development.

尊敬的美国中小学优异中文项目获奖同仁们 : 

值此 2023 年美国中文教师学会年会召开之际 , 我谨代表学会热烈祝贺 

各位所领导的中文项目荣获 2023 年美国中小学优异中文项目的殊荣 ! 

本次评选活动由美国中文教师学会《中小学汉语教学》期刊主编韩慈 

磊老师首创并组织 , 吸引了来自美国 18 个州的中小学积极响应。在评委何 

文潮教授、刘美如教授、谭大立教授 , 以及张正生教授的精心评审下 , 最 

终评选出了 20 个中小学优异中文项目。这些项目的突出特点包括 : 学校类 

型多样、学生具有广泛的社会代表性、教师学历经验丰富、课程设置丰富 

完善、教学理念先进、文化活动多样、教学成绩斐然、社会反响正面。本 

次评选活动的成功举办 , 是对献身于美国中小学中文教育事业的老师们的 

鼓励和认可。 

这 20 个中小学优异中文项目的成功经验将分批刊登于本年度的《中小 

学汉语教学》期刊。这些学校的先进做法将为美国中小学中文教育树立良 

好的示范 , 并为大学阶段的中文教学提供启示 , 从而促进 K-16 阶段中文教 

育的衔接和合作。 

最后 , 我谨代表学会衷心感谢《中小学汉语教学》编辑部全体老师多 

年来的无私奉献 , 让期刊在引领美国中小学汉语教学、促进中小学汉语教

最近二十年来 , 中文教学在美国多地的中小学阶段均取得了巨大的发 

展 , 形成了丰富多彩、质量上乘的各类教学体系。我刊于 2022 年 9 月开启 

评选 “ 美国中小学优异中文项目 ” 的活动 , 于 2023 年 4 月在美国中文教师 

学会年会上首次公布评选结果 , 引起了广泛的反响。本次期刊即刊登了其 

中十所学校的先进事迹 , 供大家交流分享。 

在多方关注期盼下 , 本刊现提早公布 2024 年 “ 美国中小学优异中文项 

目 ” 的申报条件和材料提交要求 ( 请扫码或阅读申报表 )。希望各位中小 

学教师踊跃展现师生高光亮点 , 收集推广成功经验 , 帮助大家更好地发展

Carroll High School is a public school located in the heart of 

the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. The school offers a full 

array of Advanced Placement and Honor courses as well as 

study track options from the district’s prestigious Medical 

Academy, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and 

math) program, as well as CTE (career, technology, and 

engineering) program. Carroll High School received "A" 

ratings by the Texas Education Agency in the past decades! 

QUICK FACTS 

The Carroll ISD Mandarin Program was established in 

2009 to offer Mandarin courses for students in grades 9-12. 

The program offers a range of courses, including 

Mandarin 1, Mandarin 2 Regular and Advanced, Mandarin 3 

Regular and Advanced, and Mandarin 4 (AP). 

Since its establishment, the program has experienced 

significant growth, with the number of enrolled students 

increasing from 40 to 130. The student body is comprised of 

65% white, 20% Asian, and 15% other ethnicities, with 

approximately 10% being heritage learners. 

A majority of program graduates continue to pursue 

further Mandarin study post-high school.

The Carroll High School Mandarin program aims to create 

lasting memories through task-based learning, vibrant 

Chinese Club activities, and community involvement. 

The program offers various field trips, such as a 

Mandarin 2 trip to a supermarket/restaurant, a Mandarin 3 

art and calligraphy field trip, and an AP Kung Fu field trip. 

Students can participate in the dragon dance team, lion 

dance team, and sprouting Chinese yo-yo team. 

The program has a pen pal program with Tainan First 

Senior High School in Taiwan. 

An annual Chinese speech and talent contest is held. 

The program also offers summer trips to China, Hong 

Kong, and Taiwan.

Yuhsin Lee ( 李宇心 ) graduated with a BBA from National Taiwan University 

and with a MM (Master of Management) from Northwestern University. Ms. 

Lee is currently the immediate past president of CLTA-TEXAS, an AP Chinese 

reader, a certified ACTFL OPI tester, and campus Teacher of the Year 2012 & 

2023.

Having a ten-year history, 

George School's Chinese 

program is unique among 

independent schools in 

Pennsylvania for offering IB 

Chinese Diploma Program. 

The program currently offers 

six levels of courses, and 

students have the opportunity 

to take IB Ab Initio (SL), IB B 

(SL), and AP Chinese exams. 

In recent years, the program 

has organized two language 

and culture trips to China and 

once hosted a group of high 

school students and their 

teacher from Beijing. 

SCHOOL OVERVIEW 

Established in 1891 and opened in 1893, George School is a 

Quaker-affiliated private high school situated on a rural 

campus in Newtown, Pennsylvania. In addition to offering a 

comprehensive college preparatory curriculum, the school's 

Quaker heritage is reflected in distinctive programs, such as 

community service requirements and a focus on social justice 

and environmental concerns. The school also provides an IB 

Diploma Program. 

QUICK FACTS 

Chinese is one of the world language programs offered in 

the World Language Department, alongside French, Latin, 

and Spanish courses. 

The program serves primarily American students with 

little to no Chinese background from their previous middle 

schools, as well as 20% of Chinese heritage learners. 

On average, class sizes are ten students for Chinese 1 to 3 

and six students for Chinese 4 to IB Chinese courses. 

The Chinese program's enrollment is comprised of 

around 13-14 students from both 9th and 10th-grade classes, 

8-9 students from the 11th-grade class, and 5-6 students from 

the 12th-grade class.

In February 2014, George School hosted five Chinese 

students and one teacher from Beijing No. 4 High School. 

In June 2014, the Chinese program took students on a 

language and culture trip to Beijing and Xi'an, where they 

stayed with local Chinese families for one week. 

In June 2016, students embarked on a service trip to 

Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Beijing, where they stayed with 

local Chinese families and participated in service projects in 

Yangzhou for two weeks. 

The Chinese program collaborates with the Asian 

Culture Club to organize an annual Lunar New Year Night, 

providing students with hands-on activities such as making 

and eating dumplings, writing Chinese calligraphy, and 

making Chinese knots. 


In IB Chinese courses, student scores ranged from 5 to 7 

(the full score being 7 and passing being 4), with the 

following breakdown: 

o For Mandarin Ab Initio SL, 46.1% of students scored 7, 

38.5% scored 6, and 15.4% scored 5 

o For Chinese B SL, 12.5% of students scored 7, 62.5% 

scored 6, and 25% scored 5 

70% of graduating students continue to study Chinese in 

college. 


Wenjing Huang ( 黄雯靖 ) has taught in both public and private 

schools across various states. She is a member of CLTA-USA and 

IALLT, and has presented at national and regional conferences, 

including ACTFL, NCLC, NECTFL, and CLTA-GNY. In addition, 

she is a writer for IALLT's language technology magazine.

Harvard-Westlake School 

offers nine different levels of 

Chinese courses. From 2018 

to 2023, 893 students have 

been enrolled in the Chinese 

program. In the 2021-2022 

school year, 196 students are 

enrolled in the Chinese 

program. The Chinese 

program is part of the World 

Languages Department. 

Currently, the department 

offers Latin, Spanish, French, 

Italian, Ancient Greek, and 

Chinese. 


Harvard-Westlake School is a private, co-educational, 

independent high school situated in Los Angeles, California. 

Established in 1888, it is one of the oldest and most esteemed 

schools in the nation. With a student body of more than 1,600 

students, the school provides a challenging and varied 

curriculum that equips students for achievement in college 

and beyond. 

QUICK FACTS 

 

The Chinese program at Harvard-Westlake School was 

established during the 1994-1995 academic year. On average, 

there are 16 students per class in the program. 

 

The program type is Chinese as a Second Language, 

offering a range of course levels from Chinese 1-5, AP, Honor 

Chinese Literature (9 levels), with the most advanced learning 

outcomes being Advanced Mid. 

62% of enrolled students self-identify as students of 

color, and the average tuition cost for families receiving 

financial aid is $13,000 (71% of tuition covered).

with the entire student body 


The Chinese program at Harvard-Westlake School offers a 

variety culture activity, club events and field trips. 

The HW Chinese New Year Luncheon is organized 

annually by the Chinese Cultural Club, school leadership, 

Chinese teachers, and students enrolled in Chinese courses. 

During the event, each Chinese class performs in front of over 

four hundred guests at the Skirball Cultural Center. 

There are various student clubs available to enrich 

learners' experience with the Chinese language and culture, 

including the Chinese Pen Pal Club, Chinese Pop-Culture 

Club, and Babel World Languages Magazine. 

Students have the opportunity to participate in trips 

such as Teaching English in Luoyang, China and a Summer 

Internship in Shanghai, China (July 2019). 

Two HW Chinese teachers were invited to speak about 

their innovative approach to Chinese education at the United 

Nations headquarters in New York for Chinese Language Day 

on April 20, 2019. 


Students enrolled in the Chinese program participate in a 

range of competitions and scholarship programs, apply their 

language skills, immerse themselves in Chinese culture, and 

build connections with both local and global Chinesespeaking 

communities. 

Each year, CLASS and the Chinese National Hanban 

award prizes to students for their Chinese essays and 

speeches. 

Students have the opportunity to receive scholarships 

from both the U.S. State Department and higher education 

institutions. 

Over the past decade, program participants have taken 

part in internships and trips to three different Chinese cities: 

Shanghai, Luoyang, and Chengdu.

Each of the Chinese language instructors at 

Harvard-Westlake Schools has over ten years of 

teaching experience and holds a Master's degree. 

They are also actively engaged in the Chinese 

teaching and learning community and have 

consistently participated in various professional 

development programs such as ACTFL Conferences, 

AP Summer Institute, STAR-TALK, and workshops 

organized by the US-China Institute of USC. Several 

instructors have presented at ACTFL Conferences, 

and one of them teaches a non-language class in 

China Studies at The HW Interdisciplinary Studies 

and Independent Research Department while 

serving as a board member of the CLTA-SC.

Holland Hall Upper School 

has five levels Chinese I to 

Chinese V Honor. The

with rich cultural experience

dancing, and chess. In the 

past two years, students have 

won more than 30 prizes in 

the Chinese writing, speech, 

and poster contests hosted by 

CLTA, AAICE, OKCLTA, 

CLASS, etc.

Holland Hall, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, is affiliated with the 

Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma and the Episcopal Church. The 

school has approximately 1,000 students. For 100 years, the 

independent Pre-K through 12th grade college preparatory 

school has been serving the families of Tulsa and beyond with a 

deep respect for educational excellence in a holistic 

environment. 

QUICK FACTS 

The Chinese Program at Holland Hall Schools was 

established in the 2003-2004 academic year. 

The Chinese Program at Holland Hall offers Chinese 

language and culture classes ranging from Chinese I to Chinese 

V Honor. 

The program's Chinese learners comprise 95% nonnative 

speakers from diverse ethnic backgrounds, including 

Caucasian, Asian, Hispanic, African American, Native 

American, among others. Additionally, 5% of the students in 

the program learn Chinese as a third or fourth language. 

Fox News, NPR, and 14 other social media outlets have 

featured stories about the Chinese Program at Holland Hall 

and highlighted the students' work at various events.

The students in the Chinese Program participate in a variety of 

enriching in-class activities, extracurricular events, and 

community service initiatives, which help them develop their 

autonomy, responsibility, leadership skills, and language 

proficiency in a multicultural environment. 

As part of the Chinese Program, students were taught 

Chinese Chess and organized a tournament among different 

classes. 

Each semester, students in the Chinese Program practice 

Kung Fu, learning basic moves as well as how to use weapons 

like spears and swords. They also learn that the essence of 

Kung Fu is to improve people's health, resilience, and 

integrity. 

During the Lunar New Year, students in the Chinese 

Program celebrate with various activities such as making 

"Window Flowers," presenting in school-wide meetings, 

playing Chinese music, and dining at local Chinese 

restaurants. 

Students and Dr. Edens from the Chinese Program 

volunteer at local events such as the Savor: International Food 

Festival hosted by the Tulsa Global Alliance and the Asian 

World Experience at the University of Oklahoma. 


Student's published work 

The students in the Chinese Program actively participate in 

national and state-level contests. They showcase their unique 

ideas and perspectives through essays, videos, and posters on 

topics such as Chinese learning, environmental protection, 

global issues, glass ceilings for women professionals, personal 

stories, and feelings, among others. 

In 2021 and 2022, the essays of students in the Chinese 

Program were published in the Selection of American K-12 

Outstanding Chinese Works. 

In 2021, students from Holland Hall participated in the 

Oklahoma Chinese Writing Contest and secured the first, 

second, and third prizes.

In 2022, five students from the Chinese Program won 

participation prizes in poster contest hosted by CLASS. 


Dr. Xinying Edens ( 张新颖博士 ) has been teaching for more than 20 

years in China and in America. She is the immediate past president 

of OKCLTA and a member of CLTA, CLASS, Tulsa Global Alliance, 

and US Heartland China. In 2022, she won the Heartland Chinese 

Teacher Award from USHCA and Ye Laoshi Legacy Scholarship from 

CLASS.

Located in Paterson, New Jersey, International High School 

is a leading institution, serving over 700 students, in Passaic 

County and the third largest city in the state. It is the first 

school in the county to offer an International Baccalaureate 

(IB) curriculum and provides both the IB Diploma and Career 

Programs. The school offers Spanish, French, and Mandarin 

language courses. 

QUICK FACTS 

 

In 2015, International High School in Paterson, NJ 

introduced Chinese language classes for grades 9-12, making 

it the first school in the area to offer this program. Currently, 

141 students are enrolled in Mandarin classes, which include 

Mandarin I, Mandarin II, IB Mandarin I, and IB Mandarin II. 

 

Despite slightly over half of the student body qualifying 

for free lunch, the school boasts a graduation rate that meets 

or exceeds the state average (94%). The student population 

identifies as 65% female and 44% male, with the following 

ethnicities represented: Hispanic (74%), African American 

(17%), Asian or Pacific Islander (5%), and Caucasian (4%). 

 

Remarkably, 100% of the students who complete the 

Chinese program go on to attend university, with 10% of 

them being admitted to Ivy League institutions. 

 

Additionally, every student receives scholarship support, 

which is especially significant as many of these students are 

the first in their families to pursue higher education.

International High School (IHS) has formed a 

partnership with three sister schools in Taiwan, where 

students meet monthly online and participate in a "culture 

box exchange" of snacks, toys, books, and collectibles, each 

accompanied by a note explaining their significance. 

IHS's World Language Department offers Mandarin, 

French, and Spanish courses and has organized trips to China 

(2018), Japan (2023), and Europe (Spring Break). 

Mandarin classes at IHS are committed to community 

service, including serving meals to the homeless, donating 

toiletries and blankets, hosting candy drives for orphanages, 

mentoring struggling students, and fundraising for academic 

awards. The Chinese Club brings joy to the school with annual 

events such as a fashion show, a Lunar New Year's 

celebration, kite flying, a dragon-led parade, dance contests, 

and a lantern festival. 

The International Club supports humanitarian causes 

such as earthquake relief in Turkey/Syria and Ukraine 

through fundraising, and expresses gratitude to the 

community by hosting a Thank You breakfast for parents.

Since the program began, more than 100 students at 

International High School have studied Mandarin, and 43 of 

them have earned the IB certificate in the language. 

On average, 25 students per year meet the academic and 

service requirements to join the National Chinese Honor

Chinese classroom

Society. Many of the students enrolled in the Mandarin 

Chinese program at IHS continue to utilize their language 

skills in their post-graduation studies and careers. 

In 2023, a female senior from IHS received the youth 

leadership award from the NJCTA, making it the first time the 

award was given to a school in NJ with a Chinese language 

program. 

In 2017, a graduate of International High School 

completed four years of Mandarin and became the first 

president of the Chinese club. This student studied abroad at 

Wenzhou Kean University in China and earned a B.A. in 

Global Studies, with a focus on Chinese Studies. Currently, 

she is pursuing a master’s degree in International Relations at 

Wenzao Ursuline University in Taiwan. 

A junior student from IHS placed second in a singing 

competition hosted by NJCTA in New Jersey. 


Mrs. Chuan-chu Hong Syz ( 洪川筑 ) holds a Master of 

Philosophy (MPhil.) and MS from Columbia University in 

New York City. With over 25 years of teaching experience, 

she has taught languages at various settings and grade 

levels. Mrs. Hong Syz played a vital role in writing and 

drafting the curriculum for International High School 

during its initial stages. She has received numerous awards, 

including the NJEA HIPP foundation and FLENJ mini 

grant, and is a member of ACTFL, CLASS, FLENJ, NECFL, 

NJTCA, as well as an active advocate for AAPI (Asian 

American and Pacific Islander) awareness in schools and communities. 

Ms. Hua Shu Jin ( 金華淑 ) received her BA in Chinese Language and Literature from Harbin Normal 

University in China and has over 10 years of teaching experience in various Mandarin immersion 

programs. As the first hire at International High School, she played a pivotal role in expanding and 

establishing the successful IB program over the years. She is a member of CLASS and ACTFL and has 

attended local workshops and professional development sessions.

播发动全校师生一起参与。中文班学生 

制作了龙头、龙爪和龙尾 , 全校师生用 

春字贴龙鳞图案。做完之后 , 中文班在

七、八年级中文学生表演《青花瓷》舞 

蹈。《青花瓷》已经成为梁老师所在中学 

每年最受欢迎的春晚节目之一 , 有学生从 

五年级就开始和老师要求到了八年级一定 

要被选中跳这个舞蹈。本土孩子能够把浓 

厚中国风味的节目表演成功 , 都是每天放 

学后在学校反复练习的结果。春节当天学

校停课半天 , 全校庆祝中国春节已经有十 

几年历史。自 2022 年来 , 中国春节庆祝已 

经不再局限于全校活动 , 而发展成为整个 

市区的每年必有的文化庆祝活动 , 今年市里可容纳 2600 名观众的的专业剧场座无虚席 , 每个在场

的观众都能从中感受到学生们表达的婉转、含蓄、细腻的中国江南韵味。

期间组织了书法展示活动。同学们用国 

画、素描、水彩画等形式形象地表达了对 

中国文化的理解。耳熟能详的 “ 鱼跃龙

“ 雄关万里 ”、“ 中国城 ” 等艺术作品跃

传统文化和艺术的绝佳机会 , 能够让学生更深入地了解中国文化的历史和内涵 , 感受中秋节的独 

特氛围。

以一个中国风的插枝青花瓷瓶为背景 , 

再将 “ 春 ”、“ 吉 ”、“ 福 ” 等吉祥字 

挂在上面 , 看似朵朵红花开。寓意 “ 花 

开富贵 ”、“ 吉祥如意 ” 、“ 春满人 

间 ”。另外 , 两旁的春联 , 是让学生将 

各自写好的不同吉祥话 , 贴在自己动手 

做的可爱兔子造型里 , 让吉祥话的展现 

不但应景且增添了童趣。每个学生写完春 

联 , 完成作品时 , 都不但加深了对兔年的 

兔年吉祥

印象 , 同时也复习到了已学过的知识 ( 例如 , 兔子的身体部位名称 )。作品《兔年吉祥》乃是语 

言、文化、科学 ( 树和季节变化 )、及美术等多学科结合的创作。

Located in Raleigh, North Carolina, Ravenscroft School is an 

independent preK-12 institution. Our community, inspired by

students with the skills they need to succeed in a complex and 

interconnected global landscape. 

QUICK FACTS 

 

Ravenscroft School has been offering Mandarin Chinese 

for over a decade now. 

 

The program is comprehensive and includes classes from 

Mandarin 1 to AP level. Upon completion of the Mandarin 

program, students will reach intermediate-high or higher 

proficiency level. 

 

In the 2022-2023 academic year, 38 students are 

enrolled in the Upper School Mandarin program, with a 

majority of them being non-native speakers. 

 

The Middle School currently has 35 students enrolled in 

Mandarin 1A and 1B, with approximately 47% being students 

of color and 53% being Caucasian students as of 2023.

The Mandarin Program at Ravenscroft School organizes 

school-wide events, including the Cultural Festival and Lunar 

New Year celebrations. Additionally, students volunteer at 

events celebrating AAPI Heritage Month. 

At Ravenscroft School, we commemorate various 

traditional Chinese holidays, such as the Mid-Autumn 

Festival and Lunar New Year. 

Upper School students have the opportunity to join the 

Chinese Club or Chinese Board Game Club to learn more 

about Chinese culture beyond their classes. 

School trips include visits to Beijing and New York's 

Chinatown. For those who cannot travel, there are various 

virtual exchange programs available. 


Many students at Ravenscroft School have received 

recognition from CLTA and CLASS for their participation in 

national Chinese competitions. 

Each year, Ravenscroft students submit essays to the 

National CLASS Essay Contest and receive Honorable 

Mentions or Gold Awards. 

In the past two years, works by Ravenscroft students 

have been selected by the CLTA and published in the 

Selection of American K-12 Outstanding Chinese Works. 

The program inducts 10-15 students annually into the 

National Chinese Honor Society. To be eligible for induction, 

students must maintain a high GPA and complete four hours 

of community service in Chinese. 

Upper-level students participate in college-level 

symposiums. For example, a student in the AP Chinese 

Language course wrote on girls' access to education in 

Afghanistan, a challenging assignment that reflects the 

growth in proficiency achieved over the students' course of 

study.

Sammamish High School is one of four comprehensive high 

schools in the Bellevue School District, located in the Seattle 

suburb of Bellevue, Washington. With an ethnically and 

economically diverse student population of approximately 

1,200, the school's World Language Department offers 

courses in Spanish, French, and Chinese.

For over two decades, the Chinese language program at 

Sammamish High School has been providing students with 

valuable language skills and cultural insights. 

 

Sammamish High School's Chinese language program 

offers courses at various levels, including Chinese 1, 2, 3, 4, AP 

and Honored Chinese (Chinese 6). While there is typically one 

class for each level, higher level courses are often combined 

for more advanced instruction. 

 

In our school, approximately one third of the students 

are eligible for free/reduced lunch, 14% receive special 

education services, and 38% speak a language other than 

English. The Chinese program at our school has 52 students 

enrolled for the 2022-23 school year.

Our program places a strong emphasis on Chinese language 

learning, while also incorporating various cultural and 

community activities. 

In addition to learning Chinese language, our classroom 

also features cultural immersion through activities such as 

Chinese calligraphy, ink painting, tea ceremony, martial arts, 

and Chinese chess. 

We have a vibrant Chinese Culture Club that offers 

diverse cultural activities to students. Through watching 

Chinese movies, hosting Chinese fashion shows, and learning 

traditional sports and board games like mahjong, we engage 

our students in a wide range of activities. All of them 

promotes a deeper understanding and appreciation of 

Chinese culture. 

Our program celebrates major Chinese holidays, such as 

the Mid-Autumn Festival, Lunar New Year, and Dragon Boat 

Festival. We engage in cultural activities such as making 

mooncakes, dumplings, and Zongzi. During the 2023 Lunar 

New Year, we held a potluck and dumpling-making party 

where families brought food from their own culture and made 

dumplings together. We also made a dragon to further 

immerse ourselves in the festivities. 

Our program regularly invites local artists to come to our 

school and share Chinese culture with our students. We offer 

a diverse range of activities such as Chinese calligraphy and 

ink painting, Beijing (Peking) Opera, Sichuan Face Changing, 

Tea Ceremony, Lion Dance, and more. Recently, in January 

2023, we had the pleasure of hosting a Pipa performance. 

I led students on various field trips to enhance their 

understanding of Chinese culture. We explored the 

Chinatown International District, visiting a Fortune Cookie 

factory, tea shops, a Chinese herb pharmacy, and Little 

Saigon. We also took a Bruce Lee tour with the Wing Luke 

Museum and visited the Terra Cotta exhibit at the Seattle 

Science Center. In addition, we toured the Seattle Chinese 

Garden in West Seattle and the Seattle Asian Art Museum.


Our students' achievements are impressive. They have 

excelled in language learning and made a significant impact 

on the community. 

In the 2010 Scholastic Competition Chinese Knowledge 

Bowl (for grades 9-12), our students earned 3rd place. 

In the 2011 Scholastic Competition Knowledge Bowl (for 

Chinese classroom 

grades 9-12), our students earned 1st place. 

In the 2014 WA State Chinese Competition Group Poetry 

Recitation (for grades 9-12), our students earned 2nd place. 

In the 2017 Chinese Bridge Speech Competition, our students earned 1st place. 

In the Why Learn Chinese Competition, our students earned 1st and 3rd place in 2018 and 2019, 

respectively. 


Ms. Ge ( 葛春清 ) has been teaching Chinese at Sammamish High 

School, Bellevue School District, WA since 2008. During those 

years, she taught at Newport High School, Tyee Middle School, 

and Tillicum Middle School in the same district. Prior to that, 

she also worked as an English instructor at China Agricultural 

University from 1996 to 2005. She has been an active member 

of various professional organizations, serving as a board member 

Ms. Chunqing Ge 

for the Chinese Language Teachers Association, WA (CLTA-WA) 

and Washington Association for Language Teaching (WAFLT) from 2016 to 2021, and currently as an 

advisor for CLTA-WA. Ms. Ge was recognized for her contributions in teaching Chinese by winning the 

Outstanding Contributor Award for the 2020 Why Learn Chinese Competition and the Creative 

Innovation Certificate from the Washington Association for Language Teaching in 2019.

Opened in 1969, Shelyn Elementary School is a small 

community K-6 th public school located in Rowland Heights in 

the Rowland Unified School District (RUSD), California. The 

commitment to children is to educate the whole child 

addressing social, emotional and academic needs.

In Fall 2018, Shelyn opened RUSD’s flagship Mandarin 

Dual Immersion Program. 

 

Shelyn offers a 50:50 immersion model to students in 

grades K-4 and will expand the program to 6 th grade by 2024. 

 

A total of 179 students out of 460 are enrolled in the 

immersion program housing two classes in each grade level in 

K-3 rd , and a self-contained class in 4th grade. 

 

Students who are not enrolled in the immersion program 

receive weekly Mandarin Enrichment classes, 30-50 minutes 

long, taught by the Mandarin TOSA. These enrichment classes 

increase Chinese language and culture awareness at Shelyn. 

 

Shelyn was the recipient of California Golden Ribbon 

School in 2016 for their writing program and the 2022 CA 

Pivotal Practice Award for addressing the social-emotional 

needs of students during the pandemic.

At Shelyn, we recognize the importance of engaging our 

students in understanding and celebrating multicultural 

diversity. We host multiple events to promote not only 

Chinese culture but also other ethnic groups’ cultural 

experiences. Some of these events include: 

In 2019, Shelyn celebrated our 50th Anniversary with a 

community carnival where students and staff from the 

present and past celebrated Shelyn's 50-year legacy. 

Our annual Lunar New Year parade program features 

students’ parade and authentic Chinese dances, Shaolin 

KungFu performances, and Lion Dance from a community 

group. 

From Brazilian dances to Japanese’s Taiko Project, 

multiple multicultural ethnic groups bring authentic firsthand 

cultural experiences for our students to learn and 

appreciate the cultural diversity of our community. 

Through our pen pal collaboration with an elementary 

school from Taiwan, we exchanged postcards, compassion 

and understanding for students from both sides of the Pacific 

as students sharpen their language skills and learn about one 

another’s life. 

American Chinese authors share their writing journey to 

provide our students the opportunity to gain authentic 

insights and pragmatic reading and writing experiences. 


Shelyn's commitment to seeking the best instructors and 

pedagogies has led to our students achieving academic 

success in multiple areas.

In 2022, the 3rd grade dual students scored 71% 

proficient or above in ELA CAASPP results and 81% proficient 

or above in Math CAASPP results, outperforming California 

3rd grade, whole school, and 3rd grade peers. 

Third grade dual also took CCCC (Children Chinese 

Competency Certification) test; 24% of the students scored 

Novice High and 76% of students scored Novice Mid in 

Reading. In Listening; 11% of the students scored Novice Mid 

while 89% of students scored Novice High. 

Multiple students represented Shelyn in 2019 and 2022 

SCCCS (Southern California Council of Chinese Schools) 

Chinese Idiom Contest, Storytelling Contest, and Poster 

Contest and won good scores in the state top ten. 

A dual student won 2 nd place in 2022 NCACLS (National 

Council Association of Chinese Language Schools) Mother's 

Day and Father's Day Drawing Contest.

University, Ms. Fu has served as a 

kindergarten teacher for 8 years in 

various Mandarin Dual Immersion 

Programs. She is active in her 

professional development attending 

CABE and NCLC. This year Ms. Fu 

presented at NABE. 

Ms. Kuo received her MA in 

Education from CSU Los Angeles. 

She has been teaching for 10 years 

in different of Mandarin Dual 

Immersion program models. She 

has attended multiple professional 

conferences including CABE, NCLC, 

ACTFL, local workshops and inservice 

training. 

Ms. Hsu obtained a MS in TESOL 

and a MA in Bilingual Education. 

She has taught abroad as well as 

teaching in U.S. schools. She has 

taught in various dual immersion 

program models for 11 years. Ms. 

Hsu attends and presents at 

multiple conferences such as CABE 

and NCLC. This year she presented 

at NABE. 

Ms. Yao Su 蘇瑤老師 –3rd Grade

Ms. Su received her Single Subject 

Mandarin Credential from CSU Los 

Angeles and is currently pursuing 

for Mandarin BCLAD Credential at 

CSU Pomona. She has attended 

NCLC, ACTFL and other local 

workshops. This is her first year at 

Shelyn. She is already liked by her 

students and parents. 

Ms. Xi Lin 林溪老師 – 4th Grade 

Mandarin Teacher 

Ms. Lin obtained a MS in education 

and teaching credential from 

University of North Carolina. She 

has been teaching for over 10 years 

including overseas and at various 

dual immersion program models in 

kindergarten, 5th grade and 6th 

grade in U.S. schools. She also led 

oversea culture and language 

summer camps. 

Mr. Chung Kang Chou 鄒仲綱老師 –

Mr. Chou received his MA in 

Reading Instruction from CSU Los 

Angeles. He has taught over 10 

years in various Mandarin Dual

The Chinese program organizes various activities that are 

crucial to the school's efforts to promote cultural exchange 

and understanding between our community and China. 

Every year, our school's Chinese community 

enthusiastically celebrates the Annual Chinese New Year with 

traditional performances, decorations, and food. 

We organize an Annual Chinatown culture and food trip, 

allowing students to experience the vibrant culture and 

culinary delights of the Chinese community. 

In 2019, a China Trip was also organized, immersing 

students in the rich history and culture of China. 

We also have a Chinese Ambassadors' Club where 

students learn about Chinese history, language, and 

traditions. 

In addition, we participate in a Pen Pal exchange activity 

with Xi'an Jiao Tong University affiliated high school, 

enabling students to learn about the daily lives and cultures of 

Chinese students. 


St. John's students have excelled in their Chinese language 

studies, receiving recognition and demonstrating ongoing 

enthusiasm for learning the language. 

Students participated in the selection process for CLTA- 

US's American K-12 Outstanding Chinese Works. 

Each year, over 100 St. John's students receive The 

National Chinese Honor Society award. 

More than 20 St. John's graduates continue to study 

Chinese after graduation.

The Chinese program at St. Paul VI Catholic High School 

offers variety of cultural activities. Some of them are: 

Students celebrate the Lunar New Year with school-wide 

festivities that include distributing fortune cookies, a PVI 

Lunar New Year Trivia Contest, and a lion dance performance 

in collaboration with the school symphony. 

School's Chinese classes and Asian Culture Club offer a 

wide range of activities, including calligraphy, paper cutting, 

paper folding, embroidery, Chinese chess, and Chinese Yoyo. 

The local field trips provide students with unique 

cultural experiences. A typical one is to visit the China Folk 

House Retreat in West Virginia, where students can immerse 

themselves in the rural culture of Yunnan province in China. 

We also offer an international trip to Beijing, Xi'an, and 

Shanghai during the spring or summer break. 


St. Paul VI Catholic High School students have received 

numerous awards and accolades for their achievements in

Liangyan Wang ( 王梁妍 ) is an award-winning educator with over 15 years

ACTFL, CLTA, and UK language teaching conferences on research-based 

pedagogical practices. Currently, she serves as CLTA-VA's Director of

introduction to Chinese grammar assumes only a basic knowledge of Chinese,

过了七个年头 , 发出越来越夺目的光彩。本期刊面向全球中小学 ( 含学龄 

前 ), 所有从事与中文作为第二语言教学相关的教师、沉浸式和华裔汉语 

继承语教学的教师、师资教育工作者、教学法研究者、项目策划和各类管 

理人员。本刊利用经验分享和教学研究的资源 , 为 K-12 中文教学提供信息 

服务 , 并通过期刊的平台就教师职业成长等重要问题 , 促成各级中文教师 

和语言教学研究人员之间的对话。

稿件要求必须是作者原创 , 未曾发表 ( 不含待发 ) 的作品。交稿前须 

认真检查拼写、文法、文献索引格式 , 用非母语撰稿的文章交稿前须经过 

所用语言的母语语言专家审稿。英文、中文简体、繁体均可 , 英文篇幅约 

800-2000 词 , 中文 1200-3000 汉字。 

以电子版形式投稿 , 稿件投递地址 :k12journal@gmail.com。使用 

Word 或者 Google Docs 均可 , 请不要在稿件中署名。本网络期刊格式要求 

请参看 : 中文学术论文体例或 American Psychological Association (6th or 

7th), 也可使用 Purdue Online Writing Lab 的免费网上信息作为参考。

期刊初审阅稿组采用随到随阅体制 , 不设截止期。两个月内由该领域 

资深的中文教育专家对来稿进行盲审阅读评议 , 做出录用、小修、大修 , 

或者婉谢等决定。经修改再阅、送交会审、直至电子出版以前 , 期刊编辑
