TOP 10 THINGS TO DO DURING A SNOWFALL
#10: Go Slow
Motorists are reminded to adjust their driving
to the road conditions.
#9: Remember — Amber & Blue — Snow
Plow Coming Through!
When sharing the road with plows, always
have your headlights on and give the plow
plenty of room. Oncoming vehicles should
keep to the right.
#8: Think — Right is Wrong
Never pass a snow plow on the right-hand
side where the snow comes flying out of the
plow.
#7: Help Your Hydrant
If your hydrant is buried by drifts or snowbanks,
please dig it out or call the Waterworks
Division @ 519-837-5627.
#6: If You Want to Talk
If you wish to make an inquiry, email us at
waterworks@guelph.ca or call us at 519-837-
5628. Remember, the person who takes your
call wants to help you. Your courtesy is appreciated.
#5: Call for Help
If you are a senior or a person with a disability
and require assistance to clear your driveway,
a call to the following numbers may
provide some help on a voluntary and/or for a
fee basis:
#3: Be Intersection Intelligent
If we experience several severe storms, snowbanks
may get extremely high. Please watch
for small children and other pedestrians when
you reach an intersection or pull out of your
driveway.
#2: Ask Yourself if It’s Wise to Park
Parked cars are a snowplow operator’s biggest
obstacle. If your street has not been plowed,
PLEASE do not park on it. In Guelph, parking
is prohibited on most city streets between 2:00
am and 6:00 am nightly. Parking is only permitted
where traffic signs indicate. Guest exemptions
may be allowed under certain conditions.
For more information, contact our By-
Law Enforcement office at 519-836-PARK
(7275).
#1: Be Patient
As soon as a storm begins, we start plowing.
We begin with major arteries. Then, remaining
arterials, collectors, bus routes, and steep hills.
After more than 6” has fallen, we plow residential
streets. It takes a minimum of 12 hours and
a maximum of 18 to plow all city streets.
#4: Don’t Get the Windrow Woes
We understand your frustration when you
clear your driveway and then a plow comes
by and leaves a pile of snow — a windrow.
Unfortunately, it’s impossible to plow without
leaving one.
