Dear Members:
Over the last year, this Association has been continuing
to recover from the impact of the pandemic which
resulted in a significant loss of membership and the loss
of over 70% of our funding from the United Way.
Fortunately, we were able to continue to operate as an
Association when many non-profit organizations in
Guelph ceased to exist.
The GWSA relies primarily on membership and
activity fees to finance our programs. We are a non-profit
corporation and a registered charity managed by a
volunteer Board of Directors.
Most of our members are unaware of the fact that the
GWSA is a tenant in the Evergreen Centre. As a tenant
we have a Community Benefit Agreement which
requires we pay the City of Guelph rent in the amount of
$51,500 every year for staff support and facility space.
The GWSA also has overhead costs which means we are
required to work with an auditor and occasionally seek
legal advice. We are responsible for office supplies,
purchasing advertising, covering payroll, licenses for
bingo and raffles and we contribute to the Fee Assistance
in Recreation Program (FAIR).
Once a year, the GWSA is required to provide year-end
financial statements to an independent auditor. Annually
we file a copy of our Charity Information Return. Our
auditors evaluate our documents to ensure we are
operating in accordance with Canadian accounting
standards for not-for-profit organizations and they report
their findings to the membership at our Annual General
Meeting in June.
Our membership numbers are steadily increasing, and
we are starting to see an increased demand for programs
and services by our members. Inflation has meant that
most of our costs have increased, which requires the
Board to make decisions to cover our costs – last year we
raised membership fees by 10%. All fees are established
by the Board of Directors in collaboration with the
Program Committee Chair, the Finance Committee, and the Bookkeeper. The City of
Guelph provides the software (RecEnroll) we use to register programs and activities as
well as processing credit and debit card payments by our members.
As an Association, we are required to purchase commercial general liability coverage
insurance. Property insurance policies have been affected by rising claims cost for
property across the industry which resulted in an 8% rate increase for the GWSA for
2023/2024. This insurance covers our members and the capital assets at the Evergreen,
West End Community Centre, and offsite equipment owned by the GWSA, like canoes
and trailers.
Recently some members have made some false assumptions about our finances that I
would like to address;
ASSUMPTION: Membership fees raised for our activity group must be used for
the benefit of only our group.
FALSE: Membership fees are paid to become a member of GWSA. Activity fees
are collected to cover Activity Group/Club expenses AND to help cover the cost of
overhead. Reasonable equipment costs for our activity groups are covered by the
approved Activity Group budget. When groups require additional supplies or
equipment, they should initiate their own fundraising opportunities.
ASSUMPTION: If the GWSA gets a grant to cover supplies for my activity group,
we can just subtract that amount from our activity fee.
FALSE: Grants come directly to the GWSA and must be matched to the actual
purpose or else our non-profit status could be put in jeopardy. Grants are an
unreliable source of income. Grants are not part of the Activity Group budget.
ASSUMPTION: My activity group needs new equipment or repairs – the Board
can just approve it because they are sitting on a pile of cash.
FALSE: All funds are allocated, and savings are invested so that we can cover
future expenses. In 2021, we lost nearly 80% of our funding for our Community
Support Programs which required us to lay off four members of staff. Although the
GWSA is stable right now, there may be times in the future when we may have a
large, unexpected expense or a loss of membership and we need to be prepared.
ASSUMPTION: Why does our group have to get permission to spend our money?
We should have the right to spend our fees the way we choose.
FALSE: All 40+ activity groups are covered by the insurance policies we
purchase on their behalf and the Community Benefit Agreement we have with the
City of Guelph. Our auditor has made it clear that no activity groups should have
any separate bank accounts for their groups. We have no problem with you
collecting funds for social events and we can assist you. But ultimately, if you
want to be part of the Guelph Wellington Seniors Association, you must be a
member of the GWSA and that is an individual who has fully paid all dues and
fees and is in good standing with all requirements of the Guelph Wellington
Seniors Association.
Groundhog’s Holiday
The second month, the second
day,
We know is Groundhog’s Holiday.
The keeper of the local zoo,
Photographers, reporters, too,
Anxiously await together
Woodchuck’s forecast of the
weather.
Each year this time he leaves his
hearth,
His home beneath good Mother
Earth.
He wiggles out to see the sun
And sure enough - ask anyone -
Should he perchance his shadow
see,
Back to his home again he’ll flee.
And that sign’s still the surest
thing
Six weeks must pass before it’s
spring!
Veggie Valentine
You may not “carrot” all for me
The way I care for you.
You may “turnip” your nose
When I plead with you
But if your heart should “beet”
with mine
Forever “lettuce” hope
There is no reason in the world
Why we two “cantaloupe”.
The Family Tree
by Olive Walters
We've got a family album
Like a family tree
A thrill to turn the pages
The pictures we can see
Starting off with grands and greats
Then slowly down the line
Like a book of history
A journey through the time
Fashions start to alter
Moustaches come and go
Ladies’ skirts skip up and down
A proper fashion show
Top hats change to boaters
To caps then none at all
Ladies’ bonnets disappear
And so does granny’s shawl
Pictures change to colour
Black and white has gone
A different place, a different time
So much to look upon.
But what is so amazing
Is the likeness we can see
Showing up the genes
Right through our family tree.
GWSA Group & Activity Reports
ALL Activity Groups require that you MUST have an up-to-date GWSA Membership to participate.
Art in the Hall
Art in the Hall is an opportunity
for all artisans associated with the
GWSA to showcase their work. It
has been running for many years
and will continue to display the
fine artistic talents of GWSA
members. Over the past year the
following groups have participated:
Rug Hooking, Quilting, West
End and West Hills Art Groups,
Bunka, Photography and the
Guelph Carving Club. Work can
be offered for sale or display only.
A portion of the proceeds from
each sale is given to the GWSA. If
you have not had an opportunity to
see the fine work, please make
your way down the hall towards
the library and look outside Room
4 for the display. Two large walls
have been dedicated to hanging art
and window space is also available
for smaller items. Generally, art is
displayed for a two month period.
If you wish to buy a piece, please
advise the staff at the front desk
and they will be happy to assist
you in making a purchase. Enjoy
the changing displays, I trust you
will be amazed at the talent!
Badminton
The Badminton Club continues to
be a thriving and popular club with
a membership of 115, and numerous
in-house and external activities
taking place.
There were a number of new
members, so a Level 1 coaching
clinic was held to help new members
get back into the swing of the
game. Level 1 reviews the basic
skills of footwork, positioning and
commonly used strokes such as the
forehand and backhand. Since
many new members have not
played badminton in a number of
years, reviewing basic skills is a
great way to re-introduce members
The Sentinel - February 2024 — Vol. 48, No. 6
to the game and help them improve
their skills.
A few external social events
were also held, including lawn
bowling and an annual August potluck
in the park. Both were big
successes with CBC radio being
present at the lawn bowling, where
some of our members were interviewed.
Spouses and other family
members were invited to both
those events, so it was a great way
to meet members’ families.
A food bank drive was successfully
held last year so we are planning
to hold it again.
None of these things could take
place without a committed leadership
team and a number of members
assisting with different aspects
of the club, helping to run
the coaching sessions and tournaments,
assisting with the social
events, etc. However, like many
clubs, trying to recruit members to
fill leadership positions is a challenge.
Overall, it has been a highly successful
year to this point. Badminton
at the GWSA continues to
grow in popularity and our club
continues to adapt to the needs of
our members. Come check us out
and maybe we’ll see you on the
court!
Bunka
Bunka embroidery is created by
using a unique combination of
punch needle and special silk-like
rayon thread. When completed,
many pictures resemble delicately
shaded paintings. In fact, the needle
is held and operates in much
the same manner as an artist’s
brush or pencil. We do not teach
classes or have an instructor, but
we will mentor new members.
(Continued on page 9)

(Continued from page 8)
Supplies are ordered as a group.
Every Wednesday from 9:00 a.m.
to noon in Room 3.
Canasta
Come out and join our friendly
Room 3. For more information,
contact:
canastagwsa@gmail.com.
Chess
Do you enjoy the game of chess?
Come out and make friends! Our
club is open to players of all levels.
We are primarily amateur
players simply out for the joy of
casual chess, although with
enough interest, we could organize
small tournaments. We meet on
the second and fourth Friday of
each month in the Hallway from
10 a.m. to noon and we ask for $2
per person each time for the
GWSA. And don’t worry if you
don’t have a chess set — we have
three sets as well as a digital clock
for those interested in a time control!
Computer Mentoring
There are two mentors available
every Monday from 1-3 p.m. to
answer your questions. We can
help with Windows PCs and Android
smartphones and tablets.
And now we are able to assist iPad
and iPhone users!
If you are using a laptop computer,
please bring it with you. The
fee is $3 for members of the
GWSA and $5 for non-members.
Please register at the front desk for
each class before joining us in the
Computer Room.
Craft Group
The Craft group at the Evergreen
would like to thank everyone who
has supported us this past year.
With the new gift shop, we were
able to continue selling our crafts
and help support the GWSA. And
with all our knitters at home who
generously give of their time and
talents, we thank you. Again this
year, we have been able to donate
hats, scarfs and mitts to those in
need.
Guelph Wood Carving Club
est. Circa 1986
A well-established wood carving
club of mostly seniors (both men
and women) has operated in the
Guelph area for decades.
We do carving in the round, like
cartoon characters, birds and wildlife,
spoons, bowls, etc.
Cribbage
Come on out on a Tuesday afternoon
for a friendly game of Cribbage
in Room 3 of the Evergreen
Cross-country Ski Club
The GWSA Cross-country Ski
Club will ski both locally and at
more distant locations, generally
up to 1 hour driving time, sometimes
more. We aim to ski on
Tuesday mornings, however, given
the variability of our local weather,
this may vary and day and time of
outings will depend on weather
and snow conditions. Meeting
times and places will be communicated
to the membership via email
ahead of time. Participants must be
physically able to participate,
bring their own equipment and
have previous cross-country skiing
experience. Each participant is responsible
for the applicable day
use fee payable to the ski area being
visited.
Line dancing is exercise not only
for the body but the mind as
well. It’s an excuse to get out,
meet new friends, enjoy good music,
and no partner is required. If
you have never line danced before
or need a refresher, the Introduction
to Line Dancing is where to
start. Here you will learn the basic
steps and easier dances to slower
music. The Line Dance Step Tutorial
is an opportunity to learn and
practise steps not taught in the Introduction
to Line Dancing class
and will help prepare you for the
Beyond the Basics classes which
are the next step up from the Introduction
Into Focus Photography
We are a friendly group of amateur
photographers with equipment
ranging from mobile phones and
point-and-shoot cameras to fancy
interest in photography as a
hobby and we learn from each other.
New members are always welcome.
Our regular meetings are on
the last Monday of every month in
Room 4.
If you are interested in joining,
contact Stu McCannell
Pickleball
Pickleball is a sport in which four
players use solid paddles made of
wood or composite materials to hit
a perforated polymer ball over a
net. The sport shares features of
other racquet sports: the dimensions
and layout of a badminton
court and a net and rules similar to
tennis, with a few modifications.
This sport is for people of all
ages who are looking for some fun,
laughter, socialization and exercise.
It’s easy to learn, but can be
challenging for those with a competitive
nature. All levels of skill
invited. Pickleball equipment is
provided.
Scrabble
Come join us for Scrabble at 1 pm
to 3:30 pm every Thursday in the
Hall outside the Library. All skills
information. Previous members,
please join us again. Brand new
players are most welcome. All you
need is a GWSA membership!
Any questions? Call or email
Sebastian. Phone: 647-580-5780.
The ukulele orchestra is an unqualified
success story! There are
now 65 individuals who have
joined the Silver Strummers. We
welcome ALL skill levels, beginner
you will need to get started.
openings so please contact Doreen
Muir @ 519-831-8323 if you
would like to join our choir or
would like more information. You
do not have to be able to read music,
just have a love for singing.
Rug Hooking
We have been gathering as a group
of rug hookers at the Evergreen
Centre since February 2022. Traditional
rug hooking is both art and a
craft. Many beautiful and unique
items are made by pulling loops of
fabric or yarn through a stiff, woven
base such as burlap or linen. It
is enjoyable, fun and a very social
hobby. Beginners are welcome and
we will help you get started. The
Rug Hooking Group meets on
Tuesday afternoon, 12-4, in Room
2.
Evergreen Snooker Club
The Evergreen Snooker Club is
composed of a group of active,
friendly players with skill levels
covering the full spectrum from
learner/beginner to accomplished
player. If you are interested in
learning the game, or have played
in the past and want to get back
into it, please drop by the Snooker
Room. You will be assured a warm
welcome and a place to try your
hand at one of our three tables. The
Snooker Room is open weekdays
between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm and
any other time the Evergreen Centre
may be open.
The primary focus of the club is
to have fun, build friendships and
socialize. Your snooker skill level
is irrelevant, so don’t feel intimidated
if you are a beginner. Prospective
members may visit the
club room up to three times without
charge to help with their decision
on whether to join. While
most of the current members are
men, there is a small group of
women who play regularly
(typically on Tuesday mornings),
so ladies, don’t be shy, give it a
try.
Membership is available to all
paid-up members of the GWSA on
payment of the prescribed annual
snooker activity fee. The current
fee of $79.10 (plus tax) buys you
access to the Snooker Room any
time it is open and to all the snooker
you care to play.
Storytelling
Storytelling is on Tuesdays from
12:15 to 1:15 pm in Room 4 and
even more members of the Guelph
Guild of Storytellers will be joining
to facilitate. Let’s share your
best storytelling at regular public
performances! Cost $2.00 per session.
Please sign up on RecEnroll
for a fun-filled activity!
Texas Hold ’Em
Why not come out and have fun
with us? We are averaging about
24 players a week. We are situated
in the Dining Room. We charge $2
per week and pretty well all of that
goes back to the GWSA. We play
Tuesdays & Fridays from 6:30 to
8:30 pm.
Each player starts off with $650
in real casino chips, and, as we do
not play for money, we work on a
point system. The one with the
most points each week is the winner.
We play until there is only one
player left or 8:30 pm comes,
whichever is first.
We will gladly teach anyone who
is interested in playing. Just follow
the laughter to find us. We welcome
everyone who wants to play
and enjoys company. We have
quite a few ladies playing at present
and would always welcome
more. We do not want to become a
men’s club! Remember, you have
to be a member of the GWSA to
play.
Walking Club (Indoor)
You can register for the Walking
Club’s 2023-2024 winter walking
season online through RecEnroll or
at the front desk of the Evergreen
Centre. There is a $10 annual fee
and you must be an active member
of the GWSA.
We will be walking Wednesday
mornings from 10:45 am to 11:45
am at the Guelph Sports Dome
(375 College Ave. West). We recommend
that you be there around
10:30 am, to hang up your coat and
change to indoor shoes. No outdoor
shoes are allowed on the turf
surface.
If you are interested in helping
with this group or would like any
additional information, please contact
walkingclubgwsa@gmail.com.
Watercolour Painters
The Evergreen Watercolour Painters
provides an opportunity for watercolour
painters to practise their
hobby along with others sharing
11
the same interest, while encouraging
one another and receiving information,
ideas and inspiration.
While we do not offer classes or
lessons, we welcome accomplished
watercolour painters. There is a
small annual membership fee and
membership with the GWSA is
required. We meet in Room 2 from
12:30 to 4 p.m. on the 1st and 5th
Wednesday of the month, and from
9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the third
Wednesday.
Writers Club
If you enjoy the power of the pen,
come join the Writers Club. We
can toss around ideas and topics to
get the creative juices flowing.
Then let’s share the resulting written
shape for constructive comments,
while enjoying the company
of others. Please feel welcome
to join the journey. We will meet
on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of
the month in the Board Room,
from 1-3 p.m. There is a weekly
fee of $2 for the GWSA. Contact
OUR EVERGREEN LIBRARY
We are open
Monday to Friday 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
“All the Devils are Here” by Louise Penny
Louise Penny is the author of more than 22 novels. She resides in a small village in Quebec
which is similar to the setting for many of her stories. “All the Devils are Here”, however, takes
place in Paris, France. As this story unfolds, Penny takes us on a journey through this unique city,
allowing us to experience its culture, food and ambiance.
The central character in this crime drama is the French-Canadian detective, Armand Gamache.
He has flown to France with his family to celebrate the upcoming birth of his next grandchild. His
godfather, Stephen Horowitz, a billionaire, also accompanies them. While in Paris, Stephen is in a
serious car accident and one of his associates is fatally shot. Armand assists the Paris authorities in
solving this crime which, it is suspected, was not a random accident. Penny creates an intricate web
of events which leads to the surprising discovery of what happened that fateful night and why.
This novel also explores personal relationships, particularly those between Armand and his son
Daniel and his godfather Stephen. Penny brings real humanity and understanding to these human
connections. This well-crafted novel has something for everyone.
“All the Devils are Here” and several of Penny’s other novels are available at the Evergreen
Library. Happy Reading!
Our December 30, 2023 dance was a huge success thanks to our wonderful sponsors and all the dancers
who came to celebrate the end of 2023 with us. Everyone had a great evening.
Homelife Power Realty, Your Journey Team, donated the pretty table centrepieces which lit up the room.
Tim Hortons started the evening off with coffee and tea. Domino’s Pizza came in later in the evening and
tempted us with their delicious pizza. Dairy Queen followed the pizza with their yummy Dilly Bars. We
very much appreciate all the sponsors for making our evening memorable.
Amazing Heart Facts
February is Heart Month. How
much do you really know about
your heart and how it works? Read
on to your heart's content!
- Put your hand on your heart. Did
you place your hand on the left side
of your chest? Many people do, but
the heart is actually located almost
in the centre of the chest, between
the lungs. It's tipped slightly so that
a part of it sticks out and taps
against the left side of the chest,
which is what makes it seem as
though it is located there.
- Hold out your hand and make a
fist. A child's heart is about the
same size as your fist, and if you're
an adult, it's about the same size as
two fists.
- Your heart beats about 100,000
times in one day and about 35 million
times in a year. During an average
lifetime, the human heart will
beat more than 2.5 billion times.
- Give a tennis ball a good, hard
squeeze. You're using about the
same amount of force your heart
uses to pump blood out to the body.
Even at rest, the muscles of the
heart work hard - twice as hard as
the leg muscles of a person sprinting.
- Feel your pulse by placing two
fingers at pulse points on your neck
or wrists. The pulse you feel is
blood stopping and starting as it
moves through your arteries. As a
kid, your resting pulse might range
from 90 to 120 beats per minute.
As an adult, your pulse rate slows
to an average of 72 beats per minute.
- The aorta, the largest artery in the
body, is almost the diameter of a
garden hose. Capillaries, on the
other hand, are so small that it
takes ten of them to equal the thickness
of a human hair.
- Your body has about 5.6 litres (6
quarts) of blood. This 5.6 litres of
blood circulates through the body
three times every minute. In one
day, the blood travels a total of
19,000 km (12,000 miles) - that's
four times the distance across Canada
from coast to coast.
- The heart pumps about 1 million
barrels of blood during an average
lifetime—that's enough to fill more
than 3 super tankers.
- lub-DUB, lub-DUB, lub-DUB.
Sound familiar? If you listen to
your heart beat, you'll hear two
sounds. These "lub" and "DUB"
sounds are made by the heart
valves as they open and close.
SWEET OCTOBER
by Ruth Finch
The air was fresh as Beth walked briskly through
the gravel trails winding through the gardens. This
had always been one of Beth’s favourite places
since she moved to the city some 40 years ago. The
trees were at their peak colours - dressed in bright
yellows, iridescent reds and burnt orange. It was as
if God had flung a paintbrush at the trees and the
garden instantly became a kaleidoscope of colour.
The leaves twisted and frolicked in the crisp breeze.
October is such a wonderful month, Beth mused.
Beth thought of the many Octobers as far back as
she could remember. As a child of poor immigrants,
she never had more than two hand-me-down outfits
at a time. Beth’s mind kept wandering back to that
time as a young child and she remembered a
fantasy about being the only person left in the
world. What possibilities her young mind imagined
- she could pick any place to live and have all the
beautiful clothes and furniture she wanted. What’s
more - a full fridge with all the drinks and treats
imaginable! This would have been a huge contrast
to the humble trailer she and her family lived in. It
was a few years later that it occurred to Beth,
thinking her fantasy through a bit more, that there
would be no one to share all those experiences with,
or see her beautiful clothes. This is when she first
realized that life was not all about possessions but,
in fact, that possessions were actually the very least
of it.
As the cool October air brushed gently along
Beth’s cheeks, her mind wandered to another
October memory - this one over a decade ago. This
memory was of Thanksgiving Sunday - the weather
similar to today’s. Thinking about that time gave
Beth a strange feeling of happiness mixed with the
ache of sadness. The memory took place at the
house where Beth and her beloved husband Paul
had lived for 40 years and where their three
beautiful children were raised - 2 girls, Kersten and
Ava, and son Tyler. Beth and Paul met in high
school. Beth loved Paul more than life itself.
During this particular Thanksgiving Day the
children, all grown up now with children of their
own, bustled in the house with smiling faces, one
family and then the next. By this time, Beth and
Paul had seven grandchildren in all. The children
played happily - all the cousins together.
Beth’s Mom and Dad, in their late 80s now, were
first at the table when dinner was announced. There
was laughter, pure joy and love that emanated from
the table as they all gathered. That day had with it a
feeling of indescribable warmth and
pure joy. Beth had placed blank
cards at every spot with a pencil so
people could write what they were
thankful for. Inevitably, the first
response was family. It certainly wasn’t
clothes, houses or fancy furniture. Life had been
good to all of them, and this day in particular,
Beth’s heart was bursting with gratitude.
Reliving that great memory, Beth found herself
singing a line in a song, which couldn’t have fit
more perfectly. “Those were the days, my friend,
we thought they’d never end.”
They did end, as all life transitions in ways we
don’t always expect. . .Paul passed away that next
spring, suddenly, unexpectedly, and too soon.
Beth’s parents both passed a short while later. Over
the next few years, the children and their families
moved across the country to different cities. Now it
was only Beth left in the house.
Beth was almost at the gazebo by now, and the
bench was in full view. Paul’s name etched
indelibly on the plaque with the words “I am the
Light of the world…” referring to a Bible verse.
“You were the light of MY world,” Beth was
sitting on the bench now and found herself talking
out loud as she rubbed her fingers across the cold
marble of the plaque’s lettering. A seemingly
unusual giant tear dropped from Beth’s cheeks. As
if contradictory, a smile crossed her lips. She felt he
was there, remembering with her.
On the walk home, the afternoon sun disappeared
and the air became bitterly cold, a foreshadow of
winter to come. As the wind picked up and the
leaves danced around Beth - they were flying off
the trees fast and furious now, they landed in soft
piles of colour. Our lives are a dance, thought Beth.
Sometimes soaring high towards the sun, and
sometimes dropping to the cold and damp ground
below, inevitably ending in a glorious collage
reflecting the twists and turns of our journey. Each
moment must be savoured to its fullest, she thought,
as it is fleeting, and in the end, it is in relationships
that we find our greatest treasure.
Upon returning home, Beth packed for a trip the
next day to see her son and family. This holiday
was their turn to have a “Grandma Visit”. She
reminded herself to embrace every moment of these
sweet October days.
OsteoFit
Part of living well with osteoporosis and/or
osteoarthritis involves healthy eating and physical
activity. Physical activity plays an essential role in
the treatment of osteoporosis by ‘stimulating’ or
applying a load on our bones to maintain their
structure and strength. When treating osteoarthritis,
it is important to ensure proper alignment of joints as
well. Exercise and physical activity play a vital role
and contribute to individuals’ overall health and well
-being. Four types of exercise are necessary in the
management of osteoporosis and osteoarthritis:
strength, posture and core stability, balance, and
weight bearing. Join us in this class to get moving,
The Beauty of Divine Beings Dancing
