Fortunately, we were able to continue to operate as an Association when many non-profit organizations in Guelph ceased to exist. The GWSA relies primarily on membership and activity fees to finance our programs. We are a non-profit corporation and a registered charity managed by a volunteer Board of Directors. Most of our members are unaware of the fact that the GWSA is a tenant in the Evergreen Centre. As a tenant we have a Community Benefit Agreement which requires we pay the City of Guelph rent in the amount of $51,500 every year for staff support and facility space. The GWSA also has overhead costs which means we are required to work with an auditor and occasionally seek legal advice. We are responsible for office supplies, purchasing advertising, covering payroll, licenses for bingo and raffles and we contribute to the Fee Assistance in Recreation Program (FAIR). Once a year, the GWSA is required to provide year-end financial statements to an independent auditor. Annually we file a copy of our Charity Information Return. Our auditors evaluate our documents to ensure we are operating in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations and they report their findings to the membership at our Annual General Meeting in June. Our membership numbers are steadily increasing, and we are starting to see an increased demand for programs and services by our members. Inflation has meant that most of our costs have increased, which requires the Board to make decisions to cover our costs – last year we raised membership fees by 10%.
