Never forget
Never ever
We will remember you
We will always remember you,
Today and every day
Always.”
This Month, the GWSA Board message is to provide you and/or refresh
you with some basic information on what an “Age Friendly Community” is
and some background on its relationship to the City of Guelph “Older Age
Strategy”. The GWSA Board has identified the need for an updated profile/
survey in relation to the Guelph-Wellington County and its senior citizen
population. This is very important for future planning.
I know that many of you are familiar with these terms and may find this
information repetitive, so please bear with me as I review it for those that
may not be as familiar. It may also help our fellow seniors that are new to
the Guelph-Wellington area become aware as to how important they are to
the community. (Please note that much of this information is a cut and
paste effort from existing material/documents already phrased in a manner
that needs no editing).
The City of Guelph website, under the section “Plans and Strategies”,
discusses the Older Age Strategy (OAS). Within the OAS, the City of
Guelph Council approved the Goal, Vision and Guiding Principles.
Goal
“Guelph is a great place to live and age well”
Vision
Guelph is an age-friendly community that:
• Values and supports older adults
• Optimizes opportunity for choice, independence, and quality of life
• Celebrates diversity
• Is inclusive of all, reducing inequities
Guiding principles
The City of Guelph will ensure that all services, policies, programs and
resources are designed and delivered, where feasible, using the following
guiding values and principles:
• participation and inclusion of all citizens
• respect and dignity
• active engagement in communication and decision
making
• access to a safe living environment
• fairness and equity
Age friendly projects
• The Gatekeeper Project
• Reflections on Aging
• Age Friendly Businesses
• Resources on the Go!
The Strategy was developed based on extensive
consultations, using a framework consistent with the
World Health Organization’s (WHO) Dimensions of Age
-Friendliness. The Older Adult Strategy includes 64
recommendations, including 6 foundational, and 58 that
relate to the World Health Organization’s 8 domains.
The City of Guelph is committed to becoming agefriendly
in each of these 8 identified domains:
1) Social participation
Goal - Guelph will offer facilities and programs that
allow older adults to participate in recreational and social
activities as they age
2) Transportation
Goal - Older adults in Guelph will have access to a range
of public, private and community-run transportation
services that are accessible, safe and affordable.
3) Communications and information
Goal - In Guelph, older adults and those who care for
them will have easy access to comprehensive, timely and
clear information regarding services and supports relevant
to them.
4) Community support and health services
Goal - Guelph will be a community known for offering
health and community services that fully support the well
-being of older adults.
5) Housing
Goal - For older adults in Guelph, housing is available,
affordable and supported sufficiently to allow them to
choose where they will live as they age
6) Respect and social inclusion
Goal - In Guelph, all older adults will be treated
respectfully and included fully in social life.
7) Outdoor spaces and public buildings
Goal - Buildings and outdoor spaces in Guelph will be
safe, accessible, and appropriate for older adults.
8) Civic participation and employment
Goal - Guelph will be a place where older adults can
contribute to the health of the economy and the
community by actively participating in paid and unpaid
work.
I really encourage you to visit the City of Guelph
website. I have only mentioned a small part of what is
available for your learning or refreshing on the Older
Adult Strategy and/or Age Friendly projects. We will also
continue to update you in reference to our GWSA plans
to provide the means to update our community profile in
relation to seniors.
by Linda Green
IN NOVEMBER
November comes
And November goes,
With the last red berries
And the first white snows.
With night coming early,
And dawn coming late,
And ice in the bucket
And frost by the gate.
The fires burn
And the kettles sing,
And earth sinks to rest
Until next spring.
In November, the trees are standing all sticks
and bones. Without their leaves, how lovely
they are, spreading their arms like dancers.
They know it is time to be still.
In November, some birds move away and
some birds stay. The air is full of good-byes
and well-wishes. The birds who are leaving
look very serious. No silly spring chirping
now. They have long journeys and must
watch where they are going. The staying
birds are serious, too, for cold times lie
ahead. Hard times. All berries will be
treasures.
JOYCE
Have you thought about volunteering but don’t
think you can get the flexibility that you need for
your lifestyle? Joyce works seasonally from March/
April to the end of October as a gardener at The
Cambridge Golf Course. During the month of
November, she sometimes travels and needs to ‘catch
up’ on doctor’s appointments and other necessities.
She needed to find a volunteer position that allowed
her to work during the spring/summer months but
volunteer from December to April. She found it by
working in the Evergreen Bistro kitchen and she’s
been volunteering there for approximately 10 years.
This arrangement lets Joyce maintain a work/
volunteer/life balance.
By volunteering at the Bistro during the winter
months, Joyce can ‘fill in’ for snowbirds as they go
away for their winter escape. She can also be a
‘floater’ for volunteers who are sick, or when there is
a shortage of volunteers – this arrangement works for
everyone concerned.
Volunteering in the kitchen works for Joyce
because she likes to be on her feet and keep busy.
She’s a morning person so enjoys the early shift that
is required and says the position “helps to get me out
of the house and get the day started.” There are
specific tasks that she performs every shift and,
because the Bistro has a commercial kitchen, she’s
learned a lot about safe food handling. As well as
enjoying the steady pace of the kitchen, Joyce feels
that she benefits from the team spirit, fun, laughter
and camaraderie of the other volunteers in the Bistro.
Besides the pace of volunteering in the kitchen,
Joyce expresses a sense of satisfaction in preparing
food for people who don’t want to or can’t cook for
themselves. She recognizes that regular, daily
customers are extremely appreciative of the service
that the Bistro volunteers provide.
Much appreciation to
all of the dedicated
volunteers who work in
the kitchen and other
positions in the Bistro!
GWSA Group & Activity Reports
ALL Activity Groups require that you MUST have an up-to-date GWSA Membership to participate.
Art in the Hall
All of the art groups and artisans
will have an opportunity to show off
their wares and offer items for sale if
they wish. A portion of the cost will
go toward the GWSA, and staff at the
cash will be familiar with how to
process these payments and ensure
artists receive their funds, again, if
they wish to sell their creations.
A contract will be sent out to all
groups to review; it outlines how the
shows will run. I intend to change the
art monthly and to be present the second
Monday of each month to put up
a new show. Some shows will run
longer and we may have special
presentations.
I plan on going through the list of
groups alphabetically as presented in
the Sentinel. Please start to think
about the piece you would like to
hang, present and showcase.
Further information will be forwarded
to all groups.
Badminton
The Badminton Club continues to be
a thriving and popular club with a
membership of 115, and numerous in
-house and external activities taking
place.
There were a number of new members,
so a Level 1 coaching clinic
was held to help new members get
back into the swing of the game.
Level 1 reviews the basic skills of
footwork, positioning and commonly
used strokes such as the forehand and
backhand. Since many new members
have not played badminton in a number
of years, reviewing basic skills is
a great way to re-introduce members
to the game and help them improve
their skills. A level 2 clinic is being
planned for later this fall.
A few external social events were
also held, including lawn bowling
and an annual August potluck in the
park. Both were big successes with
CBC radio being present at the lawn
bowling, where some of our members
were interviewed. Spouses and
other family members were invited to
The Sentinel - November 2023 — Vol. 48, No. 3
both those events, so it was a great
way to meet members’ families.
We are planning our annual Christmas
lunch to be held in December. A
food bank drive was successfully
held last year so we are planning to
hold it again.
None of these things could take
place without a committed leadership
team and a number of members assisting
with different aspects of the
club helping to run the coaching sessions
and tournaments, assisting with
the social events, etc. However, like
many clubs, trying to recruit members
to fill leadership positions is a
challenge.
Overall, it has been a highly successful
year to this point. Badminton
at the GWSA continues to grow in
popularity and our club continues to
adapt to the needs of our members.
Come check us out and maybe we’ll
see you on the court!
Bunka
Bunka embroidery is created by using
a unique combination of punch
needle and special silk-like rayon
thread. When completed, many pictures
resemble delicately shaded
paintings. In fact, the needle is held
and operates in much the same manner
as an artist’s brush or pencil. We
do not teach classes or have an instructor,
so you should have some
experience in the craft, and members
are required to purchase their own
supplies. Every Wednesday from
9:15 a.m. to noon in Room 3. Currently
there is a wait list.
See Bunkawithflair.com.
Chess
Do you enjoy the game of chess?
Come out and make friends! Our
club is open to players of all levels.
We are primarily amateur players
simply out for the joy of casual
chess, although with enough interest,
we could organize small tournaments.
We meet on the second and
fourth Friday of each month in the
Evergreen Board Room from 10 a.m.
to noon and we ask for $2 per person
each time for the GWSA. And don’t
worry if you don’t have a chess set
— we have three sets as well as a
digital clock for those interested in a
time control!
Computer Mentoring
There are two mentors available every
Monday from 1-3 p.m. to answer
your questions. We can help with
Windows PCs and Android
smartphones and tablets. And now
we are able to assist iPad and iPhone
users!
If you are using a laptop computer,
please bring it with you. The fee is
$3 for members of the GWSA and $5
for non-members. Please register at
the front desk for each class before
joining us in the Computer Room.
Craft Group
The ladies of the Craft Club are very
busy making beautiful articles for our
mitts and scarves to donate to the
needy. We have had a few of the
GWSA members also donating these
items so we can reach as many as
possible. We need wool donations
of all types. Come see our NEW
Drumming
We gather in a circle. Different ages,
cultures, capabilities, backgrounds
and experience. The call of the drum
will bring us together. Someone
starts a simple beat, others join in,
and then we all join in. We close our
eyes, listen to each other, and listen
to ourselves. We all know each other
without saying a word, linked together
through percussion music. Drumming
feeds the soul.
Rhythm circles are the perfect environment
to explore ideas for sounding
together, creating exciting
grooves and having fun! We all have
rhythm! Some drums and percussion
instruments will be provided or bring
your own. Sessions are open to everyone.
Join us Tuesdays from 9:30-
10:30 a.m. in Room 3. Cost is $2.00
per session.
Line Dancing
Evergreen Auditorium
Phyllis (519-836-9415)
Donna (519-831-0943)
Line dancing is exercise not only for
the body but the mind as well. It’s an
excuse to get out, meet new friends,
enjoy good music, and no partner is
required. If you have never line
danced before or need a refresher, the
Introduction to Line Dancing is
where to start. Here you will learn
the basic steps and easier dances to
slower music. The Line Dance Step
Tutorial is an opportunity to learn
and practise steps not taught in the
Introduction to Line Dancing class
and will help prepare you for the Beyond
the Basics classes which are the
next step up from the Introduction to
Line Dancing. The Intermediate class
is for experienced line dancers looking
for a challenge.
Monday Line Dance Classes
of a GWSA membership, it’s $2.00
each time you come.
Mah Jongg
Mah Jongg has started up again in
Room 4 on Mondays from 2:30-4:30
p.m., except the last Monday of the
month when it will be in the Dining
Room. It is a game played with tiles,
similar to Dominoes. Instruction is
available for those who don’t know
how to play.
Peer Learning
Peer Learning is for seniors who like
to have a good discussion with a
small, friendly group. It’s a great way
to meet new people and have fun
while learning. This fall we will be
offering the following class in the
Boardroom: Tuesdays, 1:30-3:30 pm:
Rivers and Waterways.
We are a friendly group of amateur
in photography as a hobby and we
are always welcome. Our regular
meetings are on the last Monday of
every month in Room 4.
If you are interested in joining, contact
Pickleball
Pickleball is a sport in which four
players use solid paddles made of
wood or composite materials to hit a
perforated polymer ball over a net.
The sport shares features of other
racquet sports: the dimensions and
layout of a badminton court and a net
and rules similar to tennis, with a few
modifications.
This sport is for people of all
ages who are looking for some fun,
laughter, socialization and exercise.
It’s easy to learn, but can be challenging
for those with a competitive
nature. All levels of skill invited.
Pickleball equipment is provided.
Scrabble
Scrabble is back! Come join us for
Scrabble at 1 pm to 3:30 pm every
Silvertones
The Silvertones members practise
weekly in Room 3 on Fridays from 2
so please contact Doreen Muir
@ 519-831-8323 if you would like to
join our choir or would like more
information. You do not have to be
able to read music, just have a love
for singing.
Rug Hooking
We have been gathering as a group of
rug hookers at the Evergreen Centre
since February 2022. Traditional rug
hooking is both art and a craft. Many
beautiful and unique items are made
by pulling loops of fabric or yarn
through a stiff, woven base such as
burlap or linen. It is enjoyable, fun
and a very social hobby. Beginners
are welcome and we will help you
get started. The Rug Hooking Group
meets on Tuesday afternoon, 12-4, in
Room 2.
For the 2024 ski season, it costs
$10.00 plus HST to join the Ski Club.
You register and pay for the Downhill
Ski Club at the front desk of the
Evergreen Centre. It helps to own a 5
season. Every Monday, we carpool
by meeting at the lower Evergreen
Parking Lot by the Enabling Garden
at 8:00 am, drive to Blue Mountain,
and return to Guelph by 6:00 pm.
Evergreen Snooker Club
The Evergreen Snooker Club is composed
of a group of active, friendly
players with skill levels covering the
full spectrum from learner/beginner
to accomplished player. If you are
interested in learning the game, or
have played in the past and want to
get back into it, please drop by the
Snooker Room. You will be assured
a warm welcome and a place to try
your hand at one of our three tables.
The Snooker Room is open weekdays
between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm and
any other time the Evergreen Centre
may be open.
The primary focus of the club is to
have fun, build friendships and socialize.
Your snooker skill level is
irrelevant, so don’t feel intimidated if
you are a beginner. Prospective
members may visit the club room up
to three times without charge to help
with their decision on whether to
join. While most of the current members
are men, there is a small group
of women who play regularly
(typically on Tuesday mornings), so
ladies, don’t be shy, give it a try.
Membership is available to all paid
-up members of the GWSA on payment
of the prescribed annual snooker
activity fee. The current fee of
$79.10 (plus tax) buys you access to
the Snooker Room any time it is open
and to all the snooker you care to
play.
Storytelling
Storytelling is on Tuesdays from
12:15 to 1:15 pm in Room 4 and
even more members of the Guelph
Guild of Storytellers will be joining
to facilitate. Let’s share your best
storytelling at regular public performances!
Cost $2.00 per session.
Please sign up on RecEnroll for a fun
-filled activity!
Texas Hold ’Em
Why not come out and have fun with
us? We are averaging about 24 players
a week. We are situated in the
Dining Room. We charge $2 per
week and pretty well all of that goes
back to the GWSA. We play Tuesdays
& Fridays from 6:30 to 8:30
pm.
Each player starts off with $650 in
real casino chips, and, as we do not
play for money, we work on a point
(Continued on page 11)
(Continued from page 10)
system. The one with the most points
each week is the winner. We play
until there is only one player left or
8:30 pm comes, whichever is first.
We will gladly teach anyone who is
interested in playing. Just follow the
laughter to find us. We welcome everyone
who wants to play and enjoys
company. We have quite a few ladies
playing at present and would always
welcome more. We do not want to
become a men’s club! Remember,
you have to be a member of the
GWSA to play.
Writing Your Life Story
As you may know, the Writing Your
Life Story Activity Group, which
started last September, has proved
very popular and the members of that
group are well on their way to producing
a Life Story. I shall be starting
up a NEW GROUP in January 2024
and look forward to welcoming new
members on Thursday, January 11 at
2:00 p.m. in the Board Room. Working
as a group, you will find that your
writing skills improve as your memories
are revived, and we have found
that no one’s life is “boring”. We all
have stories to tell. For more information,
The Bone Code by Kathy Reichs
Kathy Reichs writes what she knows. She is a forensic anthropologist which means she
tracks down killers by studying the bones of their victims. She has written over 20 books
and is a bestselling Canadian author.
Her character, Temperance Brennan, is also a forensic anthropologist who divides her time
between Montreal and Charlotte, North Carolina. Ryan, her P.I. boyfriend, a former police
detective, helps her solve cases. In “The Bone Code”, Tempe works on solving a double
murder which she realizes may be connected to an unsolved double murder she investigated
15 years prior.
At the same time, strange and fatal viruses are spreading thru the U.S. and Canada. Reichs
takes us into the world of the pharmaceutical industry. She explores genetic engineering and
vaccine development. While this is a work of fiction, you may be shocked to discover what
potential uses these technologies could have.
Finally, are the murders connected somehow to the deadly viruses? Will Tempe and Ryan
solve the case in time to save innocent lives? You will have to read “The Bone Code” to
find out!
ARTHUR — CANADA’S MOST
PATRIOTIC VILLAGE
In November 1942, the Toronto Star ran a
front-page headline that read “Arthur Village
Gives Sons and Money to Aid the War”, and
recognized Arthur as the Most Patriotic Village
in Canada, as one out of every seven Arthur
residents fought in the Second World War.
At that time, 126 residents had enlisted from the
population of 890. It was the highest ratio in
comparison to villages of comparable sizes in
Canada. By the end of the war, 338 Arthur
residents had enlisted, and 25 were killed in
action.
During the first war bond campaign of World
War II, the village of Arthur was the first community in Ontario to reach its quota, which it did within
a few minutes. Arthur also led the communities in Wellington for every other war and victory bond
campaign and surpassed all objectives that had been set. By the end of the fourth campaign, Arthur
had raised a total of $250,000 which was an amount equal to 64% of the assessed value of the
village’s taxable property.
In 2002, David Tilson, MPP for Dufferin-Peel-Wellington-Grey, stated in the Ontario legislature
that because of the village of Arthur’s extraordinary World War II record, the community was now
being recognized as “Canada's Most Patriotic Village”.
The sacrifice of these soldiers is honoured by the Cenotaph of Arthur, located in the heart of the
village. The monument was unveiled on August 6, 1923, by Mrs. David Brocklebank, whose son was
killed at the end of World War I, before the largest crowd ever assembled in Arthur village. After the
unveiling, the Toronto Star described the cenotaph as “a war memorial whose design and beauty
cannot be equaled as yet in the Province.” On the cenotaph are engraved the names of the 193 men
who enlisted in World War I (including the 40 who were KIA), as well as the 363 men and women
who enlisted in World War II, among whom 25 made the ultimate sacrifice. One unique feature of the
cenotaph was that, when it was being designed, a decision was made to build the monument with
stones gathered from local farms. It was
later discovered that the memorial was
the first fieldstone Cenotaph Memorial
built in the province.
Some of the men that enlisted from
the Arthur area were British Home
Children that were sent here from
orphanages in the UK. Between 1869
and 1948, over 118,000 orphaned and
abandoned children up to the age of 16
were sent to Canada to work as farm
hands and domestic servants.
ART IN THE HALL
Do we have a show for you! Please ensure you walk down the hall towards the Library to take in the
wonderful creations from not one but three creative groups involved with the GWSA. You may think as you
gaze at the artwork in the windows of Room 4 that you are looking at paintings, but as you look closer, you
will see the detailed stitching of Bunka art. If you have not heard of Bunka art, this is your chance to
experience it first hand. Items are for display only but you will be able to see them until November 7.
On the walls, you will see paintings created by the wonderful artists of Art Studio in 2 and right next to
that, you will see a wall filled with amazing photographs. These items are for sale and the helpful staff at the
front desk will gladly help you with your purchase. Christmas is coming! I know I said it before, but early
planning with a one of a kind gift will be greatly appreciated by those who receive it. Enjoy the show!
VISUAL ARTS
Landscape Painting
In this course, students will learn how to create artistic
representations of natural environments such as
mountains, forests, waters, fields, coastlines and sunsets.
Landscape painting can be created using a variety of
water-based medium: acrylic, watercolour and gouache.
Although the realistic representation of the natural world
will be the main approach, exploring landscape through
illusion is not excluded. The course will cover all that is
needed to create expressive and dynamic paintings: basic
techniques, colour mixing, tonal values, elements of
composition, effects of atmospheric perspective, the ways
to simplify the shapes and forms, and effective editing of
photographic references. Throughout the course, there
will be plenty of short demos, usually at the beginning of
the class. The course is intended for beginners and
intermediates. Just bring your supplies, your passion for
painting, and whatever experience you have and you will
grow as an artist through expanding your observational
and artistic skills.
OsteoFit
Part of living well with osteoporosis and/or osteoarthritis
involves healthy eating and physical activity. Physical
activity plays an essential role in the treatment of
osteoporosis by ‘stimulating’ or applying a load on our
bones to maintain their structure and strength. When
treating osteoarthritis, it is important to ensure proper
alignment of joints as well. Exercise and physical activity
play a vital role and contribute to individuals’ overall
health and well-being. Four types of exercise are
necessary in the management of osteoporosis and
osteoarthritis: strength, posture, and core stability,
balance, and weight bearing. Join us in this class to get
moving, improve your strength, balance, and posture,
and in turn, reduce your risk of falling.
