Fostering an environment at the Evergreen that is
positive, productive, and motivating for everyone.
by Pat Gage, GWSA President
In January, I attended a workshop hosted by Paula
Frappier and Robin Smart in the Book Nook entitled
“Building dementia-friendly communities using
communication and de-escalation techniques.” There
was a good turnout of Activity Group Leaders and five
Board members. We had asked Robin (who is a Public
Education Co-ordinator for the Alzheimer’s Society)
and Paula (who is an educator at Homewood Health
Centre) to come and speak to us because there had been
some unpleasant incidents over the last year. Our
volunteers were beginning to encounter people whose
emotions and behaviours changed rapidly from
reasonable to angry or abusive. These changes in
personality can be caused by cognitive impairment
such as anxiety, depression or bi-polar disorder and can
cause increased irritability, agitation, or frustration.
We learned that 1.7 million Canadians are predicted
to be living with dementia by 2050. Robin and Paula
told the group about how difficult life can be with this
diagnosis and how most people are ashamed or
embarrassed to admit they have been diagnosed as
having dementia. Once a person has received the help
or treatment they need, they will present very
differently. They encouraged us to be patient and kind
and to not let these isolated bad experiences cloud how
we view these individuals.
We were offered some simple tips to try when we
encounter someone who is obviously struggling.
Reduce distractions, make eye contact, and allow the
person time to respond. They also recommended we
approach in a friendly manner from the front and to ask if you can be of help.
If you encounter someone in a dysregulated state, (someone who has difficulty
controlling their emotional response), arguing with them is futile. A dysregulated
person cannot hear what you are explaining until they have calmed down. We learned
that when attempting to reduce the intensity of a conflict (or de-escalating), it often
helps to repeat what the person is saying in their own words. “Oh, you were sure you
signed up for this and your name isn’t here?” This ensures you are hearing them
correctly.
Our GWSA Strategic Plan states the “we will treat each other with respect and
ensure we fulfil our individual and collective responsibilities and accountabilities. We
will be honest, trustworthy, and consistent in all our interactions with each other.”
This past year was extremely challenging. There were multiple complaints made to
the Board of Directors regarding inappropriate behaviour by some members –
specifically, they were accused of harassment and being disrespectful or abusive. As a
Board, we take all complaints seriously and these issues were addressed and, when
necessary, action was taken.
We are extremely grateful that so many of our members choose to volunteer in the
more than fifty activity groups at the Evergreen, the West End and the Dome, and we
want you to know that there will be times when someone you encounter may be angry
or abusive.
You do not ever have to accept harassment or abusive behaviour. That is why we
recently posted our Code of Conduct in the lobby.
Guelph Wellington Seniors Association (GWSA) employees, members and
volunteers are all expected to uphold a certain ethical standard of conduct, using
common courtesy and good judgment, and behaving with integrity, honesty, and
fairness.
We are a growing organization – our membership is now more than 2,500 and
together we enable older adults to continue to be active, to make new friends and age
with dignity.
Be active. Get involved.
THE EDITOR’S PAGE
by Linda Green
SAINT PATRICK WAS
BRITISH
Although he made his mark by
introducing Christianity to Ireland
in the year 432, Patrick wasn’t Irish
himself. He was born to Roman
parents in Scotland or Wales in the
late fourth century.
WE SHOULD REALLY WEAR
BLUE
Saint Patrick’s colour was “Saint
Patrick’s blue,” a light shade. The
colour green only became associated
with the big day after it was linked
to the Irish independence movement
in the late 18th century.
THE IRISH TAKE SAINT
PATRICK’S DAY SERIOUSLY
As you might expect, Saint Patrick’s
Day is a huge deal in his old
stomping grounds. It’s a national
holiday in both Ireland and Northern
Ireland.
IT USED TO BE A DRY
HOLIDAY
For most of the 20th century, Saint
Patrick’s Day was considered a
strictly religious holiday in Ireland,
which meant that the nation’s pubs
were closed for business on March
17. In 1970, the day was converted
to a national holiday, and the stout
resumed flowing.
IT’S THE THOUGHT THAT
COUNTS
Not every city goes all out in its
celebratory efforts. From 1999 to
2007, the Irish village of Dripsey
proudly touted that it hosted the
Shortest Saint Patrick’s Day Parade
in the World. The route ran for 26
yards between two pubs. Today, Hot
Springs, Arkansas claims the title
for brevity – its brief parade runs for
98 feet.
THERE’S A REASON FOR THE
SHAMROCKS
How did the shamrock become
associated with Saint Patrick?
According to Irish legend, the saint
used the three-leafed plant as a
metaphor for the Holy Trinity when
he was first introducing Christianity
to Ireland.
COLD WEATHER HELPED
SAINT PATRICK’S LEGEND
In Irish lore, Saint Patrick gets
credit for driving all the snakes out
of Ireland. Modern scientists
suggest that the job might not have
been too hard. According to the
fossil records, Ireland has never
been home to any snakes. Through
the Ice Age, Ireland was too cold to
host any reptiles, and the
surrounding seas have staved off
serpentine invaders ever since.
Modern scholars think the “snakes”
Saint Patrick drove away were
likely metaphorical.
ELDERLY EVASIONS
by Bruno Szafran
Have you ever been a potential victim of a scam? A common fraudulent solicitation is an offer to clean the
air ducts in your home (even though you live in an apartment). When you ask where the business
representative is calling from, to see if they are in Guelph, the response on the telephone is ‘I am calling
from India’.
I recently attended an Evergreen Workshop with forty other participants concerning frauds perpetrated on
seniors. Two presenters were from Scotiabank. Their focus was to highlight ways to protect yourself from
being ripped off by criminals who want to take your money.
The speakers, connected to Elder Abuse Protection Ontario, discussed the ways to prepare oneself for
malicious intruders trying to access your hard-earned money by using the 4 Rs as a protective shield:
Recognize, Reject, Reach out, and Report:
• Recognize the communication as fraud.
• Reject any request to send the fraudster your money.
• Reach out for help to deal with these criminals.
• Report the incident to the Police and/or Canadian Anti-Fraud centre, for example.
The Bank Managers spoke about the various types of scams we are facing such as the Grandparent Scam,
Romance Scam or any kind of Phone or Email Scams such as Telemarketing Fraud or Prize Scams. They
assured the audience that Scotiabank has set up firewalls/safeguards to protect clients from criminal
intrusions. We learned that Online Banking is much safer than people realize. There has been no incidence
of the use of Artificial Intelligence hacking into customer accounts.
Reminders were given in terms of protecting your personal information which may result in identity theft.
For example: do not share your Bank PIN Number, the Police or CRA do not call to request money on
behalf of the courts, and be aware that if the unsolicited offer is too good to be true, it probably is.
ALL Activity Groups require that you MUST have an up-to-date GWSA Membership to participate.
Art in the Hall
Art in the Hall is an opportunity
for all artisans associated with the
GWSA to showcase their work. It
has been running for many years
and will continue to display the
fine artistic talents of GWSA
members. Over the past year the
following groups have participated:
Rug Hooking, Quilting, West
End and West Hills Art Groups,
Bunka, Photography and the
Guelph Carving Club. Work can
be offered for sale or display only.
A portion of the proceeds from
each sale is given to the GWSA. If
you have not had an opportunity to
see the fine work, please make
your way down the hall towards
the library and look outside Room
4 for the display. Two large walls
have been dedicated to hanging art
and window space is also available
for smaller items. Generally, art is
displayed for a two month period.
If you wish to buy a piece, please
advise the staff at the front desk
and they will be happy to assist
you in making a purchase. Enjoy
the changing displays. I trust you
will be amazed at the talent!
Badminton
The Badminton Club continues to
be a thriving and popular club with
a full membership capped at 115.
Our play days and times are provided
under GWSA Groups & Activities
Contact Information separately
in the Sentinel.
In addition to badminton, the
club hosts a number of other social
and activity events during the year.
The most recent was our Christmas
Social on December 14, 2023,
as well as a food bank drive during
the same week. Thanks goes to our
various club volunteers for making
this social a hit. The social was
very well attended and accompanied
by live music. The food barrel
donations were overflowing. A
number of our more skilled players
continue to be involved in outreach
programs at schools where
they help to coach badminton to
our youth and hence ensure the
future continuation of our sport.
A badminton teaching clinic was
held in February over a period of
three weeks to help a number of
club players improve their skills;
this is the second such clinic during
the 2023-2024 season. We
made good use of our newly acquired
“Shuttle Feeder” for some
of the skills drills. Thanks to our
various coaches who generously
gave of their time to help other
players in the club.
We also had a pair of players
participate in the current year’s
Ontario Seniors Badminton Tournament
held mid-February. Others
took their chances at a late February
“Direct Path Qualifier” Tournament
for the Canada 55+ Summer
Games to be held in Quebec.
We are quickly coming up on a
new season starting April 1. As we
approach the new 2024-2025 season,
we will have a number of
Leadership Team volunteers stepping
down at the end of March after
serving for several years. During
the next couple of months, the
club will be looking for other
members of the club as replacements.
The change to an early registration
by the City of Guelph has
brought some new challenges that
the Leadership Team has had to
navigate. We will also be looking
for volunteers for help in unofficial
capacities.
Thus far, it was a highly successful
year. Badminton continues to
grow in popularity and our club
continues to grow and adapt to the
needs of our members. Come
check us out and maybe we’ll see
you on the court!
Beading & Jewelry Making
Bring your kit along to the Board
Room Fridays from 11 am to noon
to work on your personal beadwork
and jewelry projects. Leslie
will facilitate impromptu miniclasses
on Metis beadworking. We
will also have resources to share or
give away and Leslie will have
materials you may purchase if you
wish. Cost $2.00 per session.
Book Club 1
Our group meets in the Board
Room on the last Friday of each
month from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Bunka
Bunka embroidery is created by
using a unique combination of
punch needle and special silk-like
rayon thread. When completed,
many pictures resemble delicately
shaded paintings. In fact, the needle
is held and operates in much
the same manner as an artist’s
brush or pencil. We do not teach
classes or have an instructor, but
we will mentor new members.
Supplies are ordered as a group.
Every Wednesday from 9:00 a.m.
to noon in Room 3.
Canasta
Come out and join our friendly
group for a game of canasta. We
welcome all levels of players. If
you are new to the game, we will
be glad to teach you. Join us on
Fridays from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. in
Room 3.
Chess
Do you enjoy the game of chess?
Come out and make friends! Our
club is open to players of all levels.
We are primarily amateur
players simply out for the joy of
casual chess, although with
enough interest, we could organize
small tournaments. We meet Fridays
in the Hallway from 10 a.m.
to noon and we ask for $2 per person
each time for the GWSA. And
don’t worry if you don’t have a
chess set — we have three sets as
well as a digital clock for those
interested in a time control!
Computer Mentoring
There are two mentors available
every Monday from 1-3 p.m. to
answer your questions. We can
help with Windows PCs and Android
smartphones and tablets.
And now we are able to assist iPad
and iPhone users!
If you are using a laptop computer,
please bring it with you. The
fee is $3 for members of the
GWSA and $5 for non-members.
Please register at the front desk for
each class before joining us in the
Computer Room.
Craft Group
The Craft group at the Evergreen
would like to thank everyone who
has supported us this past year.
With the new gift shop, we were
able to continue selling our crafts
and help support the GWSA. And
with all our knitters at home who
generously give of their time and
talents, we thank you. Again this
year, we have been able to donate
hats, scarfs and mitts to those in
need.
Guelph Wood Carving Club
Guelph area for decades.
We do carving in the round, like
cartoon characters, birds and wildlife,
spoons, bowls, etc.
Other carving techniques include
relief carving, marquetry, and pyrography.
Cribbage
Come on out on a Tuesday afternoon
for a friendly game of cribbage
in Room 3 of the Evergreen
Centre. The room is open at 12:30
pm and we start playing at 1:00
pm. Everyone is welcome, and we
play 8 games, with prizes at the
end of the afternoon. If you are not
sure how to play, we have instructors
to help.
Cross-country Ski Club
The GWSA Cross-country Ski
Club will ski both locally and at
more distant locations, generally
up to 1 hour driving time, sometimes
more. We aim to ski on
Tuesday mornings. However, given
the variability of our local
weather, this may vary and day
and time of outings will depend on
weather and snow conditions.
Meeting times and places will be
communicated to the membership
via email ahead of time. Participants
must be physically able to
participate, bring their own equipment
and have previous crosscountry
skiing experience. Each
participant is responsible for the
applicable day use fee payable to
the ski area being visited.
hobby and we learn from each other.
Pickleball
Pickleball is a sport in which four
players use solid paddles made of
wood or composite materials to hit
a perforated polymer ball over a
net. The sport shares features of
other racquet sports: the dimensions
and layout of a badminton
court and a net and rules similar to
tennis, with a few modifications.
This sport is for people of all
ages who are looking for some fun,
laughter, socialization and exercise.
It’s easy to learn, but can be
challenging for those with a competitive
nature. All levels of skill
invited. Pickleball equipment is
provided.
Scrabble
Come join us for Scrabble at 1 pm
to 3:30 pm every Thursday in the
Hall outside the Library. All skills
from newbie to expert. Drop-ins
are welcome or call me for more
information. Previous members,
please join us again. Brand new
players are most welcome. All you
need is a GWSA membership!
Any questions? Call or email
Sebastian. Phone: 647-580-5780.
Shuffleboard
Come on out and join our group.
Enjoy some gentle exercise,
friendship and fun. Membership is
available to all paid-up GWSA
members for a $25 fee for the year.
Register the first time you play.
Beginners are welcome and instruction
is available. The group
plays Tuesdays and Wednesdays
from 1 to 3 p.m.
Silver Drummers
We gather in a circle. Different
ages, cultures, capabilities, backgrounds
and experience. The call
of the drum will bring us together.
Someone starts a simple beat, others
join in, and then we all join in.
We close our eyes, listen to each
other, and listen to ourselves. We
all know each other without saying
a word, linked together through
percussion music. Drumming
feeds the soul.
Rhythm circles are the perfect
environment to explore ideas for
sounding together, creating exciting
grooves and having fun! We
all have rhythm! Some drums and
percussion instruments will be provided
or bring your own. Sessions
are open to everyone. Join us
Tuesdays from 9:30-10:30 a.m. in
Room 3. Cost is $2.00 per session.
Silver Strummers
The ukulele orchestra is an unqualified
success story! There are
now 65 individuals who have
joined the Silver Strummers. We
welcome ALL skill levels, beginner
through advanced. We will
provide you with all the information
you will need to get started.
If you would like to try the universally
accessible and friendly instrument
of the ukulele, please
contact Eva Quan 519-820-1032.
Silvertones
The Silvertones members practise
weekly in Room 3 on Fridays from
2 to 3:30 p.m. We do have a few
openings so please contact Doreen
Muir @ 519-831-8323 if you
would like to join our choir or
would like more information. You
do not have to be able to read music,
just have a love for singing.
Rug Hooking
We have been gathering as a group
of rug hookers at the Evergreen
Centre since February 2022. Traditional
rug hooking is both art and a
craft. Many beautiful and unique
items are made by pulling loops of
fabric or yarn through a stiff, woven
base such as burlap or linen. It
is enjoyable, fun and a very social
hobby. Beginners are welcome and
we will help you get started. The
Rug Hooking Group meets on
Tuesday afternoon, 12-4, in Room
2.
Skiing
For the 2024 ski season, it costs
$10.00 plus HST to join the Ski
Club. You register and pay for the
Downhill Ski Club at the front
desk of the Evergreen Centre. It
helps to own a 5-7 Pass purchased
from Blue Mountain well before
the start of the ski season. Every
Monday, we carpool by meeting at
the lower Evergreen Parking Lot
by the Enabling Garden at 8:00
am, drive to Blue Mountain, and
return to Guelph by 6:00 pm. Contact
Bob Shearer 519-831-4093 for
Ski Club information.
Evergreen Snooker Club
The Evergreen Snooker Club is
composed of a group of active,
friendly players with skill levels
covering the full spectrum from
learner/beginner to accomplished
player. If you are interested in
learning the game, or have played
in the past and want to get back
into it, please drop by the Snooker
Room. You will be assured a warm
welcome and a place to try your
hand at one of our three tables. The
Snooker Room is open weekdays
between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm and
any other time the Evergreen Centre
may be open.
The primary focus of the club is
to have fun, build friendships and
socialize. Your snooker skill level
is irrelevant, so don’t feel intimidated
if you are a beginner. Prospective
members may visit the
club room up to three times without
charge to help with their decision
on whether to join. While
most of the current members are
men, there is a small group of
women who play regularly
(typically on Tuesday mornings),
so ladies, don’t be shy, give it a
try.
Membership is available to all
paid-up members of the GWSA on
payment of the prescribed annual
snooker activity fee. The current
fee of $79.10 (plus tax) buys you
access to the Snooker Room any
time it is open and to all the snooker
you care to play.
Storytelling
Storytelling is on Tuesdays from
12:15 to 1:15 pm in Room 4 and
even more members of the Guelph
Guild of Storytellers will be joining
to facilitate. Let’s share your
best storytelling at regular public
performances! Cost $2.00 per session.
Please sign up on RecEnroll
for a fun-filled activity!
Texas Hold ’Em
Why not come out and have fun
with us? We are averaging about
24 players a week. We are situated
in the Dining Room. We charge $2
per week and pretty well all of that
goes back to the GWSA. We play
Tuesdays & Fridays from 6:30 to
8:30 pm.
Each player starts off with $650
in real casino chips, and, as we do
not play for money, we work on a
point system. The one with the
most points each week is the winner.
We play until there is only one
player left or 8:30 pm comes,
whichever is first.
We will gladly teach anyone who
is interested in playing. Just follow
the laughter to find us. We welcome
everyone who wants to play
and enjoys company. We have
quite a few ladies playing at present
and would always welcome
more. We do not want to become a
men’s club! Remember, you have
to be a member of the GWSA to
play.
Walking Club (Indoor)
You can register for the Walking
Club’s 2023-2024 winter walking
season online through RecEnroll or
at the front desk of the Evergreen
Centre. There is a $10 annual fee
11
and you must be an active member
of the GWSA.
We will be walking Wednesday
mornings from 10:45 am to 11:45
am at the Guelph Sports Dome
(375 College Ave. West). We recommend
that you be there around
10:30 am, to hang up your coat and
change to indoor shoes. No outdoor
shoes are allowed on the turf
surface.
If you are interested in helping
with this group or would like any
additional information, please contact
Watercolour Painters
The Evergreen Watercolour Painters
provides an opportunity for watercolour
painters to practise their
hobby along with others sharing
the same interest, while encouraging
one another and receiving information,
ideas and inspiration.
While we do not offer classes or
lessons, we welcome accomplished
watercolour painters. There is a
small annual membership fee and
membership with the GWSA is
required. We meet in Room 2 from
12:30 to 4 p.m. on the 1st and 5th
Wednesday of the month, and from
9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the third
Wednesday.
Writers Club
If you enjoy the power of the pen,
come join the Writers Club. We
can toss around ideas and topics to
get the creative juices flowing.
Then let’s share the resulting written
shape for constructive comments,
while enjoying the company
of others. Please feel welcome
to join the journey. We will meet
on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of
the month in the Board Room,
from 1-3 p.m. There is a weekly
fee of $2 for the GWSA. Contact
“Find You First” by Linwood Barclay
Linwood Barclay was a newspaper columnist for the Toronto Star for 2 decades. He was a wellknown
humour columnist. He left the paper in 2006 to write mystery novels and now has 20 to his
credit.
In “Find You First” he tells the story of tech billionaire Miles Cookson, who at 42, is shocked to
discover he has a terminal genetic illness. Miles is a bachelor and has no heirs. However, he did
donate his sperm to a fertility clinic years ago. Could he track down any heirs that may have
resulted?
Miles would like to let them know they may have the same illness. He also feels obliged to leave
them some of his fortune to help with their eventual care. He discovers that there may be 9 kids. He
quickly locates one, Chloe Swanson, and they set off to find the other eight half siblings. But
strange events unfold as the heirs begin to vanish without a trace.
Who could be responsible for these disappearances? Is it a disgruntled family member or is
something even more sinister going on? The suspenseful story has many twists and turns and is an
easy and enjoyable read that will keep you guessing from start to finish. Check it out!
ART IN THE HALL
Our latest show at the Evergreen Seniors Centre is all about colour! In the windows outside Room 4, you
will find the wonderful creations from the group Colouring for Calm. They meet on Fridays and, boy, do
they create gorgeous pieces!
On the walls towards the library you will see artist, Barbara Saunders, detailed colourful work displaying
images of birds, landscapes and a scene from Paris. Her work is called Bunka, a Japanese embroidery and is
for display only. She started this style of art in Florida in 2009.
Next we have another solo show displaying animation at its best! Luc Marier has vast experience in all
things Disney as well as a talent for caricature portraits. Please come down the hall to enjoy all things
colour.
WELCOME NEW MEMBERS!
• One Easter, a father was teaching his son to drive when out of nowhere a rabbit jumped on
the road. Slamming on the brakes, the son said, “I nearly ruined Easter! I almost ran over the
Easter Bunny.” His father replied, “It's okay son - you missed it by a hare.”
• Therapist: What's been up lately? Chocolate bunny: I don't know Doc, I just feel so hollow
inside.
• Why did the jelly bean go to school? Because he really wanted to be a Smartie.
• 364 days of the year: Do NOT eat anything you find on the ground. Easter: Go and search in
the dirt for candy a strange giant bunny left for you, kids!
• What do you call a bunny with fleas? Bugs Bunny
• Why can’t a rabbit’s nose be 12 inches long? Because then it would be a foot!
• Why was Peter Cottontail hopping down the bunny trail? Because he’s too young to drive!
• What do you call a line of rabbits jumping backwards? A receding hare-line.
• How can you tell which rabbits are oldest in a group? Just look for the grey hares.
BILL SHEPHARD’S PASSING
29
It is with saddened hearts that we, the Sentinel Team,
announce the sudden passing of one of our team
volunteers, Bill Shephard, on Wednesday, February 7/24,
at the age of 74.
Bill was a volunteer with the Sentinel since 2018, and
recently began volunteering on the Information Desk. He
was a delight to work with, cheerful most times, always
wanting to help whomever he could, even though he was
confined to a wheelchair.
One of his great accomplishments was getting Bingo
introduced into the GWSA. He worked tirelessly,
and persistently, to have the Centre allow bingo
to be held here and everyone who participates
thoroughly enjoys themselves.
Bill was a man of many hats throughout his
lifetime. As he was an avid reader, he enjoyed
coming to the Evergreen for Book Club and
really liked playing Texas Hold ’Em Poker. He
will definitely be missed by all. R.I.P., Bill.
OsteoFit
Part of living well with osteoporosis and/or
osteoarthritis involves healthy eating and physical
activity. Physical activity plays an essential role
in the treatment of osteoporosis by ‘stimulating’
or applying a load on our bones to maintain their
structure and strength. When treating
osteoarthritis, it is important to ensure proper
alignment of joints as well. Exercise and physical
activity play a vital role and contribute to
individuals’ overall health and well-being. Four
types of exercise are necessary in the management
of osteoporosis and osteoarthritis: strength,
posture and core stability, balance, and weight
bearing. Join us in this class to get moving,
improve your strength, balance, and posture,
and in turn, reduce your risk of falling.
Retirement Homes vs. Nursing Homes In Ontario
In today’s rapidly aging society, the decision of where to spend one’s “golden years” has become a
pressing concern for many families. As seniors and their loved ones navigate the complex landscape of
elder care, two main options often emerge: nursing homes and retirement homes. While both serve the
purpose of providing a safe and comfortable environment for the elderly, they differ significantly in the
level of care, amenities, and cost. The key distinctions between a nursing home and a retirement home are
discussed below while examining the advantages and drawbacks of each, to empower you to make the
best-informed choice for your family’s unique needs and preferences.
Nursing Homes (Long-Term Care Homes): Provide 24-hour care for seniors with complex medical needs
or requiring specialized care.
Retirement Homes: Cater to seniors who are relatively independent but may need some assistance or
prefer community living.
Nursing Home Level of Care: High, with medical support and assistance with daily living activities.
Retirement Home Level of Care: Varying levels of care, focused on assistance with daily living activities
and amenities.
Nursing Home Regulation: Regulated by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care in Ontario.
Retirement Home Regulation: Regulated by the Retirement Homes Regulatory Authority (RHRA) in
Ontario.
Nursing Home Admission Process: Based on an assessment of need conducted by the Local Health
Integration Network (LHIN) or Home and Community Care Support Services.
Retirement Home Admission Process: Based on individual choice, with residents paying for services and
accommodations.
Nursing Home Accommodations & Services: Private or shared rooms, 24-hour nursing care, meals,
housekeeping, laundry, and recreational activities.
Retirement Home Accommodations & Services: Range of accommodations, services, and amenities,
such as meals, housekeeping, recreational activities, and varying levels of assistance with personal care.
Nursing Home Payment: Partially funded by the provincial government, with residents responsible for
co-payment fees.
Retirement Home Payment: Privately owned and operated, residents pay for the services and
accommodations they require.
WHAT IS A NURSING HOME?
In Ontario, Canada, the terms long-term care facilities, also known as a “nursing home”, and a retirement
home refer to different types of facilities that cater to the needs of seniors, but they serve distinct purposes
and offer different levels of care.
Long Term Care Facilities (Nursing Home):
Also known as Long-Term Care homes in Ontario, it’s a skilled nursing facility that provides 24-hour care
to individuals who require assistance with daily living activities, medical care, and support (at times it can
be considered an assisted living residence depending on the amount of care needed).
Nursing homes are regulated by the provincial government, specifically the Ministry of Health and Long-
Term Care in Ontario.
Residents in a nursing home typically have more complex medical needs or may require specialized care
for conditions such as dementia or Alzheimer’s.
Admission to a nursing home is usually based on an assessment of need, which is conducted by the Local
Health Integration Network (LHIN) or Home and Community Care Support Services.
WHAT IS A RETIREMENT HOME?
Retirement homes, also known as retirement residences, cater to seniors who are relatively independent
but may require assistance with some daily living activities or prefer the convenience of community living
(independent and assisted living residences vary in terms of amount of care services offered).
Retirement homes are privately owned and operated and are not directly regulated by the provincial
government. However, they must comply with the Retirement Homes Regulatory Authority (RHRA) in
Ontario.
Retirement homes generally offer a range of accommodations, services, and amenities, such as meals,
housekeeping, recreational activities, and varying levels of assistance with personal care, generally
promoting activities that also promote retirement living and independent living.
Admission to a retirement home is typically based on the individual’s choice, and residents pay for the
services and accommodations they require.
WHICH ONE DO YOU NEED?
In Ontario, nursing homes (long-term care homes) and retirement homes cater to different needs and levels
of care for seniors. Nursing homes provide 24-hour medical care and support for seniors with complex
needs, while retirement homes are suited for relatively independent seniors who may require some assistance
or prefer a community setting. The cost of staying in a nursing home is partially funded by the provincial
government, with residents paying a co-payment fee that varies based on the type of room. Retirement
homes are privately owned, and the costs of a retirement home can vary widely depending on factors like
location, accommodations, and services. When choosing a nursing home or retirement home, it is essential to
research and visit the facilities to find the one that best suits the individual’s specific needs, preferences, and
budget.
COST OF LONG-TERM CARE HOMES
Long-Term Care (LTC) homes and nursing homes in Ontario are partially funded by the provincial
government. Residents are required to pay a co-payment fee for accommodation costs such as room and
board for the skilled nursing facility. These fees are standardized across the province and are updated
periodically. The monthly co-payment fees for a long-term care home in Ontario are approximately:
• Basic or ward room (shared by 3 or 4 residents): $1,891+CAD
• Semi-private room (shared by 2 residents): $2,280+ CAD
• Private room (single occupancy): $2,701+ CAD
In addition to the accommodation costs, residents may also be responsible for other expenses such as
personal hygiene products, telephone, cable television, or additional services not covered by the government
funding. The rates mentioned earlier are the co-payment fees residents pay for staying in a nursing home in
Ontario, which are already subsidized by the provincial government. The government covers the cost of
nursing, personal care and health services, while residents contribute towards their accommodations and
meals.
COST OF RETIREMENT HOMES
The cost of staying in a retirement home in Ontario can vary widely depending on factors such as location,
type of accommodation, services, and amenities provided by the facility. Retirement homes are privately
owned and operated, so there is no standardized fee structure across the province. The monthly cost for a
retirement home in Ontario can range from around $1,500+ CAD for basic accommodations and services to
over $6,000+ CAD for luxury suites and a comprehensive list of services and amenities. Typical expenses in
a retirement home can include:
• Rent for the living space, which can be a private room or apartment-style accommodation.
• Meals, which are often provided in a communal dining area.
• Housekeeping and laundry services.
• Personal care services, such as assistance with bathing, dressing, or medication management.
• Recreational and social activities.
• Additional amenities, like fitness centres, swimming pools, or transportation services.
