A MESSAGE FROM THE GWSA
BOARD
April has arrived! The weather is getting warmer (at the time of my
writing this) and raincoats will be in fashion and many umbrellas will
get misplaced!
On a funny note, I asked one of my male friends what was the first
thing he thought of as he realized we are heading into April. I quickly
realized I should have better anticipated his response. It wasn’t about
flowers or spring weather or the Easter Bunny. Instead it was that
Ford unveiled their first Mustang in April 1964 and it cost less than
$2,400.
I received a request for this month’s Message to talk about what the
GWSA CBA is. Many of you already know what it is and as such
will find this a refresher.
What is the GWSA CBA?
A Community Benefit Agreement (CBA) is an important part of the
City of Guelph’s community’s investment strategy. It lays out the
range of collaborations that the City enters into with community
organizations.
The following historical description is taken from the City of Guelph
COMMUNITY BENEFIT AGREEMENT SUMMARY REPORT. I
think it is initially important to note this description in order to see
how CBAs relate, not just to GWSA, but also to the Guelph
Community as a whole.
“Historically, agreements have emerged organically as the City
entered into a variety of multi-year agreements with community
organizations over several years. CBAs allow the City to formalize
and standardize these agreements. CBAs have proven to be a costeffective
way of working with community benefit organizations in
ways that foster innovation and leverage resources and collaborations
already well positioned in the community.
Regardless of the specific work under a CBA, it is clear that CBAs
support a range of City goals, across a number of different
departments, and impact a significant number of residents and
volunteers.”
In 2014, the GWSA jointly established the first Community
Benefit Agreement (CBA) with the City of Guelph. (According to
GWSA “Our History” document).
Here are a couple examples of what is included in our present CBA
(December 2019) between The Corporation of the City of Guelph
(called the City) and Guelph Wellington Seniors Association (called
the Investment Recipient):
(Continued from page 3)
“The goal of this Agreement is to support the GWSA to fulfil its vision to empower older adults to be
active, to be involved and to age successfully,
This Agreement supports this vision through the provision of Non-Financial Investment contributions to
the Investment Recipient (GWSA) to achieve the following shared objectives:
• To provide opportunities for active healthy living, as well as for exploring new innovative
opportunities for volunteering;
• To provide support services for seniors; and
• To act as a voice for seniors.”
The CBA also speaks to many specific areas including (for example) a number of activities relating to:
• Staff support
• Facility space
• Supplies and equipment
• Funding for the FAIR program
The CBA further speaks to the requirement for Work Plans, Reports, Resources, Confidentiality and
Openness and Accountability.
As you can see/imagine, it is a very important document. I have tried not to overload you with specifics but
rather, to those unaware of a CBA, give you an idea of its purpose.
Till next time!
NOTIFICATION FROM YOUR BOARD OF DIRECTORS
As an organization, we have weathered an extremely challenging couple of years. Last year,
we lost 76% of our funding from the United Way and, during the same time, our membership
numbers dropped significantly. Inflation pressures have also had an impact on our bottom line
which is why, earlier this year, the Finance Committee recommended to the Board that we raise
our Membership Fees 10%. The Board unanimously passed this recommendation.
The GWSA’s mission is to enable older adults to be active, get involved, and make new
friends. In the coming months, we will also be re-evaluating the activity fees of all our groups.
If you need fee assistance in participating in any of our programming, please reach out to our
Executive Director to access the FAIR Program.
On April 1 st , Membership fees will increase by 10% + HST:
$35 (+ $4.55 HST) = $39.55: pick up Sentinel ($36.16 previous fee)
$42 (+ $5.46 HST) = $48.17: Sentinel delivered to your door within city limits
($42.94 previous fee)
$60 (+ $7.80 HST) = $67.80 Sentinel mailed to your home ($62.15 previous fee)
We remain thankful for your continued membership which allows us, in partnership with the
City, to provide a supportive environment and a variety of programming we know you enjoy.
A FEAST FOR THE SENSES
Spring is my favourite season. Instead of the
silence of a winter morning, we hear the chirps and
trills of returning birds. The frost comes out of the
earth and the rich loamy smell of the ground is a sure
sign that spring is here. The monotone hues of winter
are replaced with verdant green lawns emerging from
hibernation and springtime sunshine brings the
fragrance and bright colours of spring blossoms.
For centuries, we have associated certain types of
flowers with specific meanings and values. Most
often, the meaning associated with each flower
comes from history, legends, and characteristic
qualities of the particular bloom.
The Crocus: Often the first flower to appear each
spring, written documentation of the crocus dates
back as far as 1500 BC. Highly valued in ancient
times for its medicinal and herbal properties, the
crocus was widely used in a number of ancient
festivals and celebrations as a symbol of love and
youthful joy.
Daffodil: The daffodil serves as the symbolic
flower for the Canadian Cancer Society, representing
hope, bravery and new beginnings. As one of the
early flowers of spring, the daffodil beautifully
withstands the strong winds and storms of the
season. Its sturdy and strong stem holds up through
the harsh winds of spring, supporting the bright and
vibrant petals of the flower.
Tulips: The tulip was originally a wild flower
growing in Central Asia. It was first cultivated by the
Turks as early as 1000 AD. The name ‘tulip’ came
from the Turkish word for turban. Nowadays, there
are many different tulip varieties to choose from, and
you can still buy some of the original wild varieties,
often called species tulips.
Iris: The beautiful and elegant Iris serves as a
symbol of wisdom, faith, and valour. It is said that
the flower received its name from the Greek goddess
of the rainbow, Iris.
Volunteer Corner from Becky MacDonald
National Volunteer Week!
April 16-22
Volunteering Weaves Us Together
National Volunteer Week is a time to celebrate those in
our communities, workplaces and families who selflessly
give their energy to others.
During this week and throughout the year, we would
like to recognize and show appreciation to all volunteers
for your hard work, dedication and support with the many
different programs and services. Without your passion
and commitment, the centre would not be the same
without you.
Upcoming Volunteer Awards
Senior of the Year Award
This award is given by a municipality to recognize an
outstanding senior who, after age 65, enriches the social,
cultural or civic life of the community.
Deadline: April 30
If you are interested in nominating a fellow volunteer,
please speak to Becky in the main office on Mondays or
Wednesdays, or email becky.macdonald@guelph.ca
Orientation and Training
All volunteers will be required to complete the
mandatory Orientation & Training. The training can be
completed from the comfort of your home online. For
those who do not have access to a computer, training
dates will be setup for you to attend in the near future.
Please contact Becky MacDonald:
you have any questions.
GWSA COMMITTEES
Openings for a Secretary
If you like to take minutes and looking to give back to
your seniors association in the morning once or twice a
month, two committees (Travel and Governance
Succession and the Board of Directors) are in need of a
secretary to record minutes during the monthly meetings.
Governance Committee
Assists the Board of Directors with the development and
review of bylaws, policies, and procedures for the
Association. Morning meetings 4-6 times per year.
Experience in governance with a not-for-profit
organization, and comfort working with documents or
willingness to learn would be assets.
Membership & Marketing
Meet on the 4 th Tuesday of each month at 9:30 am. The
committee reports to the Board for all membership and
marketing initiatives, focusing on the maximum interest
of members and advancement of the Board’s Strategic
Plan. The Committee provides content and messaging
advice to the webmaster for the website and social media
accounts and prepares monthly GWSA Email Updates.
Marketing and recruitment experience would definitely be
assets, but are not required.
Special Events
Looking for a team of volunteers to assist with planning,
organizing and running special events (e.g.,
Remembrance Day ceremonies) throughout the year for
the members and community.
Travel Committee
Our committee leader needs members who want to join
others in the group to help brainstorm, organize, plan
and possibly escort trips, travel, and tours for those
seniors who love to go places! Come join in, meet new
friends, and have fun!
Welcoming & Information Desk
Looking for energetic, friendly, outgoing individuals to
assist with greeting, providing tours and answering
questions about the centre during the week, Monday to
Friday. Two shifts available, morning and afternoon in
the main lobby.
Bistro 683
Dishwasher: Volunteer in the kitchen assisting with
washing dishes using the industrial dishwasher and
completing other tasks during the shift.
How to get involved?
First, complete an online application form:
https://gwsa-guelph.ca/1749-2/. No computer? Pick up a
paper application at the Evergreen Seniors Community
Centre front desk.
Second, you will be contacted to set up an interview,
followed with training.
If you are a current volunteer, you are more than
welcome to take on more than one position. Follow up
with Becky for more details.
volunteering in general, contact: Becky MacDonald by
GWSA Group & Activity Reports
ALL Activity Groups require that you MUST have an up-to-date GWSA Membership to participate.
Art in the Hall
All of the art groups and artisans
will have an opportunity to show off
their wares and offer items for sale if
they wish. A portion of the cost will
go towards the GWSA, and staff at
the cash will be familiar with how to
process these payments and ensure
artists receive their funds, again, if
they wish to sell their creations.
A contract will be sent out to all
groups to review; it outlines how the
shows will run. I intend to change the
art monthly and to be present the second
Monday of each month to put up
a new show. Some shows will run
longer and we may have special
presentations.
I plan on going through the list of
groups alphabetically as presented in
the Sentinel. Please start to think
about the piece you would like to
hang, present and showcase.
Further information will be forwarded
to all groups.
Badminton
After a busy year, including regular
playtimes, tournaments, clinics, and
social activities, the program year is
drawing to a close. Our year is ending
with some specific skill-based micro
clinics open to all members who want
to improve their skills. The clinics are
popular and we are very fortunate to
have several skilled in-house members
who volunteer to share their expertise
with everyone.
Book Club 1
Our group meets in the Board Room
on the last Friday of each month from
1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. For April, our
selection is “The Island of Sea Women”
by Lisa See. Our May selection is
“Gray Ghost” by Clive Cussler.
Monthly fee is $3.00. At present, we
have a waiting list.
playing Duplicate Bridge with
Duplicate Boards and using Bidding
Bunka
Bunka embroidery is created by using
a unique combination of punch needle
and special silk-like rayon thread.
When completed, many pictures resemble
delicately shaded paintings. In
fact, the needle is held and operates in
much the same manner as an artist’s
brush or pencil. We do not teach classes
or have an instructor, so you
should have some experience in the
craft, and members are required to
purchase their own supplies. Every
Wednesday from 9:15 a.m. to noon in
Room 3. Currently there is a wait list.
See Bunkawithflair.com.
Canasta
Come out and join our friendly group
for a game of Canasta. We welcome
all levels of players. If you are new to
the game, we will be glad to teach
you. Join us on Fridays from 9:00 to
11:30 a.m. in Room 3. Contact
canastagwsa@gmail.com for more
information.
Chess
Do you enjoy the game of chess?
Come out and make friends! Our club
is open to players of all levels. We are
primarily amateur players simply out
for the joy of casual chess, although
with enough interest, we could organize
small tournaments. We meet on
the second and fourth Friday of each
month in the Evergreen Board Room
from 10 a.m. to noon and we ask for
$2 per person each time for the
GWSA. And don’t worry if you don’t
have a chess set - we have three sets
as well as a digital clock for those
interested in a time control!
Computer Club
Here are the topics we learned about
at our meeting on March 13: Gmail,
Windows 11 22H2 (File explorer with
tabs, Windows 11 clipboard, User
interface changes), The “oops” key,
how to permanently delete files/
folders (vs Recycle bin), Antivirus
packages for Windows, and ChatGPT.
Computer Mentoring
There are two mentors available every
Monday from 1-3 p.m. to answer your
questions. We can help with Windows
PCs and Android smartphones
and tablets. And now we are able to
assist iPad and iPhone users!
If you are using a laptop computer,
please bring it with you. The fee is $3
for members of the GWSA and $5 for
non-members. Please register at the
front desk for each class before joining
us in the Computer Room.
Craft Group
The ladies of the Craft Club are very
busy making beautiful articles for our
store. We continue to make hats, mitts
and scarves to donate to the needy.
We have had a few of the GWSA
members also donating these items so
we can reach as many as possible. We
need wool donations of all types.
Pickleball
Pickleball is a sport in which four
players use solid paddles made of
wood or composite materials to hit a
perforated polymer ball over a net.
The sport shares features of other racquet
sports: the dimensions and layout
of a badminton court and a net and
rules similar to tennis, with a few
modifications.
This sport is for people of all
ages who are looking for some fun,
laughter, socialization and exercise.
It’s easy to learn, but can be challenging
for those with a competitive nature.
All levels of skill invited. Pickleball
equipment is provided.
Shuffleboard
Come on out and join our group. Enjoy
some gentle exercise, friendship
Silvertones
The Silvertones members practise
weekly in Room 3 on Fridays from 2
to 3 p.m. We do have a few openings
so please contact Doreen Muir @ 519
our choir or would like more information.
Rug Hooking
We have been gathering as a group of
rug hookers at the Evergreen Centre
since February 2022. Traditional rug
hooking is both art and a craft. Many
beautiful and unique items are made
by pulling loops of fabric or yarn
through a stiff, woven base such as
burlap or linen. It is enjoyable, fun
and a very social hobby. Beginners
are welcome and we will help you get
started. The Rug Hooking Group
meets on Tuesday afternoon, 12-4, in
Room 2.
Skiing
For the 2023 ski season, it costs
$10.00 plus HST to join the Ski Club.
You register and pay for the Downhill
Ski Club at the front desk of the Evergreen
Centre. It helps to own a 5-7
Pass purchased from Blue Mountain
well before the start of the ski season.
Every Monday, we carpool by meeting
at the lower Evergreen Parking
Lot by the Enabling Garden at 8:00
am, drive to Blue Mountain, and return
to Guelph by 6:00 pm. Contact
Bob Shearer 519-831-4093 for Ski
Club information.
Evergreen Snooker Club
The Evergreen Snooker Club is composed
of a group of active, friendly
players with skill levels covering the
full spectrum from learner/beginner to
accomplished player. If you are interested
in learning the game, or have
played in the past and want to get
(Continued on page 12)
(Continued from page 11)
back into it, please drop by the
Snooker Room. You will be assured a
warm welcome and a place to try your
hand at one of our three tables. The
Snooker Room is open weekdays between
9:00 am and 4:00 pm and any
other time the Evergreen Centre may
be open.
The primary focus of the club is to
have fun, build friendships and socialize.
Your snooker skill level is irrelevant,
so don’t feel intimidated if you
are a beginner. Prospective members
may visit the club room up to three
times without charge to help with
their decision on whether to join.
While most of the current members
are men, there is a small group of
women who play regularly (typically
on Tuesday mornings), so ladies,
don’t be shy, give it a try.
Membership is available to all paidup
members of the GWSA on payment
of the prescribed annual snooker
activity fee. The current fee of $70
(plus tax) buys you access to the
Snooker Room any time it is open and
to all the snooker you care to play.
Texas Hold ’Em
Why not come out and have fun with
us? We are averaging about 16 players
a week. We are situated in the
Dining Room. We charge $2 per week
and pretty well all of that goes back to
the GWSA. We play Tuesdays from
6:30 to 8:30 pm.
Each player starts off with $500 in
real casino chips, and, as we do not
play for money, we work on a point
system. The one with the most points
each week is the winner. We play until
there is only one player left or 8:30
pm comes, whichever is first.
We will gladly teach anyone who is
interested in playing. Just follow the
laughter to find us. We welcome everyone
who wants to play and enjoys
company. We have quite a few ladies
playing at present and would always
welcome more. We do not want to
become a men’s club! Remember,
you have to be a member of the
GWSA to play.
Walking Club
Do you like to walk during the spring,
summer and fall? Do you like to have
company when you walk?
If so, joining the Walking Club is a
great way to exercise with lots of
fresh air, enjoy nature and beautiful
scenery and make new friends while
discovering the trails in the area.
You can register for the Walking
Club’s 2023 walking season online
through RecEnroll or at the front desk
of the Evergreen Centre. The annual
fee is $10 and you must be an active
member of the GWSA.
We meet in Riverside Park on
Thursday mornings and walk out from
there for a couple of hours OR we
drive to one of the many wonderful
Guelph Walking Trails or nearby
Conservation Areas. Walks are at
your own pace and you must arrange
your own transportation to the Trail
Head.
For the first walk only, on April 6th,
we will meet in the dining room of the
Evergreen Centre at 8:30 am. For all
remaining walks, we meet in Riverside
Park at 8:45 am for registering
and collection of any entrance fees.
Then we depart at 9:00 am sharp.
Walks are on…rain or shine.
If you are interested in helping with
this group or would like any additional
information, please contact:
Watercolour Painters
The Evergreen Watercolour Painters
provides an opportunity for watercolour
painters to practise their hobby
along with others sharing the same
interest, while encouraging one another
and receiving information, ideas
and inspiration. While we do not offer
classes or lessons, we welcome accomplished
watercolour painters.
There is a small annual membership
fee and membership with the GWSA
is required. We meet in Room 2 from
12:30 to 4 p.m. on the 1st and 5th
Wednesday of the month, and from 9
a.m. to 4 p.m. on the third Wednesday.
Storytelling Through Woven Words
On February 14, the Storytelling
Through Woven Words Group performed
through songs and storytelling
at the Shelldale Centre.
Do you want to tell a story, but have
trouble choosing the best words, or
including ‘drama’ to make it more
interesting? Pass on stories to your
family. Impress your friends! From
everyday conversations to potential
stage performance, we can help you
captivate your audience. Mondays 10-
11 a.m. in Room 4.
Writers Club
If you enjoy the power of the pen,
come join the Writers Club. We can
toss around ideas and topics to get the
creative juices flowing. Then let’s
share the resulting written shape for
constructive comments, while enjoying
the company of others. Please feel
welcome to join the journey. We will
meet the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of
the month in the Board Room, from 1
-3 p.m. There is a weekly fee of $2 for
the GWSA. Contact Susan Jackson
Writing Your Life Story
This new Activity Group has gotten
off to a good start with 12+ members.
All are conscientiously following the
suggestions of the facilitator, as steps
towards producing a document that
can be shared with children, grandchildren
and other interested people.
Each week, there is an assignment to
create a story relating to your life experience.
The story is then shared
with others in the group. We have
already learned that no one’s life is
“boring”! Space is limited due to
room size, but we can accept a few
more members. We meet on Thursdays
at 1:30 pm in the Board Room. If
you are interested, come and check us
out! Contact Jennifer Blackie at 519-
824-7204 or jblackie@bell.net for
more information.

Here are some highlights from another successful evening of
DANCING AT THE EVERGREEN on February 18, 2023
Had a great time. Superb, spacious,
wooden floor. Options for ballroom,
country, line dancing. DJ will play your
requests. Friendly, welcoming people.
Thanks to all.
Linda
I was at your dance last night for
the first time and it is the best dance
in the area. The music was better
than I have heard in a while. People
were so friendly and having a good
time. I hope to be back to the one in
March.
Jackie
Thanks for a wonderful night of
dancing — my group really enjoyed
it. Thanks for reserving the tables
and enlarging the line dance floor.
Hope to be there for the next dance.
Happy dancing!
FLAG DAY
The GWSA celebrated National Flag Day of
Canada on February 15 with flags and pins
provided by MP Lloyd Longfield and MPP Mike
Schreiner. A display including an antique linen
Union Jack and a Red Ensign flanked our modern
Maple Leaf Flag.
Many of us remember standing outside in the
February weather as we sang ‘O Canada’ while the
Red Ensign was lowered for the last time and the
Maple Leaf flag was raised to the top of the
flagpole.
It was a proud day in Canadian history.
VALENTINE’S DAY
On Valentine’s Day, the GWSA Storytellers performed for the Shelldale Centre Preschool Program.
Karen entertained with a ‘Draw and Tell’. What appeared to be several random circles suddenly took the
shape of a smiling bear named Oliver.
Ellen showed many local birds, in puppet form. Gord’s ukelele intrigued one young man in particular, as
all took part in singing and playing games. We have been invited to return on April 18th. You are welcome
to join us.
ART IN THE HALL
Please come and see the wonderful artwork displayed
outside Room 4 at the Evergreen. It is on your way to
the library so you can’t miss it! Most of the work is for
sale and can easily be purchased at the front desk. The
back of the art work has all of the details about the work
and labels beside the work show the artist’s name, title
of work and price.
This amazing display was created by members of the
West End Art Group. They meet on Tuesday afternoons
at the West End Community Centre, off Paisley near
Costco in Guelph. I assure you, you will be impressed
by the work!
OUR EVERGREEN LIBRARY
We are open
Monday to Friday 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Did you know there is a lending library in the Evergreen building? The library - also known as the
“Book Nook” - has more than 2,000 books and DVDs for lending to GWSA members. While it does not
have the large scale and range of the city library branches, it does have a great selection of popular
content for the convenience of our members.
The library is located at the end of the long hallway, past the meeting rooms and the Sentinel office. It
overlooks the Speed River and the east side of Riverside Park with beautiful scenic views in all four
seasons.
Donations of books and DVDs are welcome. Our valued volunteers assess the age, condition and
content of donated items. Some are placed on the shelves as additions to the collection, while others are
set aside for future book sales. The proceeds from book sales are then used to purchase new additions.
We usually have a jigsaw puzzle being assembled on a table in front of the windows. All visitors are
encouraged to help put it together. We always have another puzzle ready to start when one is completed.
Our library volunteers welcome you to visit, browse, sit and relax, work on the puzzle, or check out a
book or DVD. We look forward to assisting you. Please come down to the end of the hall to see us!
This is Our Time – by Barbara Heagy
When I joined the local Seniors Centre after
retirement, I met many new women and men through
the local clubs and activities. This is a place for
strong, vital people who want the stimulation and
surprises an active life still offers to those who seek
it. They are interested and interesting.
The women are feisty. I put it down to having a
lifetime of succumbing to others’ needs and demands,
always playing second fiddle, and denying their own
requirements and desires. Now, at this time of their
life, they find themselves released from all those
pressures and they aren’t going to do it anymore. This
is a time for them.
The men seem chilled, calm. Perhaps they too, are
tired of life’s demands on them to support, guide,
lead, be the boss, the one in charge. They are glad to
release the reins of power to another. This is a time
for them.
Our twilight years offer us a freedom from all the
duties and obligations we have had for most of our
lives. Children are grown, the nest is empty, jobs are
complete, retirement beckons. This is a time for us, a
time for women and men to live their best lives. We
still have time.
