December is upon us!!
A couple of weeks ago, I sat down on my couch with my
computer on my lap and started writing my December 2023
Message From the Board. I mentioned how we are likely busy
planning or attending activities, searching for the right gift, or
visiting family, and so on. I kept on writing until, near the end of
the third paragraph, I got this eerie feeling that I had said all this
before. So, I went to the Sentinel site and brought up my
December 2022 Message From The Board and discovered my
first 3 paragraphs were almost word for word (picture a
SHOCKED emoji!).
I wasn’t sure if I should congratulate myself on my memory
retention but that wouldn’t be fair, as I did not initially remember
that I was writing sentences the same as last year. Then I thought
maybe I should be sad because there wasn’t something new and
exciting to report, like I went into space or invented something
really exciting. My daughter, who did not inherit my full sense
of humour, said, “Mom, do you really think anyone is going to
sit down and read your Message From the Board and say, Gee,
this message sounds just like last year’s, let’s make sure she
knows”.
So, I’m restarting my December 2023 Message From the Board
as follows:
Welcome to December! I can feel the holiday spirit in the air as
the celebrations and activities start to emerge including the
decoration of Christmas trees, singing of Holiday Carols,
creating Winter Solstice Art, or the smell of cookies baking in
the oven. We hope you are able to enjoy “relaxation in the peace
of the season.”
One of the most important and sincere things I can’t stress
enough about is that you take the opportunity to read through the
Sentinel so you don’t miss anything. The GWSA Monthly
Update email and our GWSA website https://gwsa-guelph.ca are
additional informative options to help keep you
updated!
I continue to be amazed at the scope of activities
that are available to our GWSA membership.
Everything from Pickleball, Badminton or
Canoeing to the Silvertones Choir and Silver
Strummers, Quilting, Knitting and Craft Groups,
and Drumming, Computer Support, Photography
and Line Dancing, Art programs, Euchre,
Storytelling, Trips, Travel and Tours, and the list
goes on and on. This doesn’t even note all the
services including the Sentinel, the Bistro 683 or
the Gift Shop! Throughout the years of being the
primary caregiver to both my mother and father, I
wish I had known more about the GWSA. A huge
thank you to all our Activity Group Leaders and
to our members that participate!!
Always, but at this time referencing specifically
the holiday season, programs and healthy
opportunities that support the prevention of
loneliness or isolation are important. I truly
believe staying active and connected with others
is critical. Taken from the National Institute on
Aging, “Everyone needs social connections to
survive and thrive. But as people age, they often
find themselves spending more time alone. Being
alone may leave older adults more vulnerable to
loneliness and social isolation which can affect
their health and well-being.”
Board also thanks all the City of Guelph staff who
support us in achieving our goals.
I would also like to add a quick thank-you to a
GWSA member that provided an information
update on my November “Message From The
Board” in relation to the Age Friendly Strategy
(AFS). Apparently, the on-line link I referenced
to find information about the AFS relative to the
Bench Project and the Gatekeeper Project, did
not have up-to-date information. I will be
following up in the near future and will report
back as appropriate.
On mentioning “relaxation in the peace of the
season” in an earlier paragraph, I feel compelled
to make a comment pertaining to the state of
unrest in our world as it relates to an impact or
potential impact on our well-being. Please do not
hesitate to seek professional help if you find
yourself becoming overwhelmed with what you
are seeing or hearing.
As I did in December 2022, I’ve included
informative links to keep handy that note public
health measures and advice that will support
keeping us all safe and healthy during the month
of December and beyond.
https://www.ontario.ca/page/public-healthmeasures-and-advice
https://wdgpublichealth.ca
Having said the above, this is another opportunity
to mention Joan who was significant in assisting
in the development and implementation of our
Welcome Desk. I have seen first-hand how our
Welcome Desk volunteers continue to wholeheartedly
welcome people and truly enjoy
assisting in any way they can to potential
members AND present members.
The month of December brings us to the end of
the year 2023. To our GWSA members we send
our collective thanks for your membership with
us! This thank you is gigantic and sincere! In
fact, this paragraph could go in every monthly
edition without a word being changed! We truly
value you!!!
On behalf of GWSA President Pat Gage and the
GWSA Board, we hope your holiday celebrations
are heartfelt. We know there are a number of
religious and cultural celebrations in December,
including Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and
the Winter Solstice. We hope you remain safe
and that the New Year will bring increased joy,
health, blessings and peace.
VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT - KEN
Ken is a very eclectic volunteer, offering to the GWSA a variety of interests,
skills and achievements. With an avid interest in the outdoors, he joined the canoe
club in 2009 and then went on to be the Group Activity Leader for ten years. Ken
gets great satisfaction in the realization that GWSA members can do this activity
when often they think that they aren’t physically capable. He is also aware that the
club provides the opportunity for social engagement and bonding as members,
working in pairs, provide support and encouragement for one another. Ken continues
to go on an extended canoe trip every year for up to 15 days.
In his position on the Board of Directors from 2015 to 2022, Ken enjoyed being
part of a team updating administration of GWSA bylaws and procedures. He was
also a member of the Travel Committee as a Board representative relaying relevant information between the
two committees.
Ken currently sits on the Membership and Marketing Committee and was Chair during Covid, demonstrating
initiative by conducting meetings on Zoom. With a background in sales, Ken enjoys putting his expertise
into action through marketing strategies, such as the New Member Orientation and the Open House to attract
and increase new membership.
Ken joined the wood carving group in the early 2000s and became the Activity Group Leader in 2017.
With his experience as a wood carver and his overseas teaching experience with the Air Force, Ken was a
natural for this volunteer position. Research has proven that “Working with your hands releases serotonin,
reduces stress as a creative outlet, and provides a sense of satisfaction through accomplishment.” Ken adds
to this that wood carving “brings people together by providing a 3-dimensional form of expression and can
attract new GWSA members.”
Ken emphasizes that he has benefited from volunteering by growing emotionally, spiritually and mentally.
He’s also gained self-confidence and increased his social interactions. He encourages members to volunteer
in any capacity as “a way of expanding your horizon” and adds that “you will be stretched in a good way.”
The GWSA would like to thank Ken for his ongoing dedication and commitment to volunteering!
GWSA Group & Activity Reports
ALL Activity Groups require that you MUST have an up-to-date GWSA Membership to participate.
Art in the Hall
All of the art groups and artisans
will have an opportunity to show off
their wares and offer items for sale if
they wish. A portion of the cost will
go toward the GWSA, and staff at the
front desk will be familiar with how
to process these payments and ensure
artists receive their funds, again, if
they wish to sell their creations.
A contract will be sent out to all
groups to review; it outlines how the
shows will run. I intend to change the
art monthly and to be present the second
Monday of each month to put up
a new show. Some shows will run
longer and we may have special
presentations.
I plan on going through the list of
groups alphabetically as presented in
the Sentinel. Please start to think
about the piece you would like to
hang, present and showcase.
Further information will be forwarded
to all groups.
Badminton
The Badminton Club continues to be
a thriving and popular club with a
membership of 115, and numerous in
-house and external activities taking
place.
There were a number of new members,
so a Level 1 coaching clinic
was held to help new members get
back into the swing of the game.
Level 1 reviews the basic skills of
footwork, positioning and commonly
used strokes such as the forehand and
backhand. Since many new members
have not played badminton in a number
of years, reviewing basic skills is
a great way to re-introduce members
to the game and help them improve
their skills.
A few external social events were
also held, including lawn bowling
and an annual August potluck in the
park. Both were big successes with
CBC radio being present at the lawn
bowling, where some of our members
were interviewed. Spouses and
other family members were invited to
both those events, so it was a great
The Sentinel - December 2023 — Vol. 48, No. 4
way to meet members’ families.
We are planning our annual Christmas
lunch to be held in December. A
food bank drive was successfully
held last year so we are planning to
hold it again.
None of these things could take
place without a committed leadership
team and a number of members assisting
with different aspects of the
club helping to run the coaching sessions
and tournaments, assisting with
the social events, etc. However, like
many clubs, trying to recruit members
to fill leadership positions is a
challenge.
Overall, it has been a highly successful
year to this point. Badminton
at the GWSA continues to grow in
popularity and our club continues to
adapt to the needs of our members.
Come check us out and maybe we’ll
see you on the court!
Bunka
Bunka embroidery is created by using
a unique combination of punch
needle and special silk-like rayon
thread. When completed, many pictures
resemble delicately shaded
paintings. In fact, the needle is held
and operates in much the same manner
as an artist’s brush or pencil. We
do not teach classes or have an instructor,
but we will mentor new
members. Supplies are ordered as a
group. Every Wednesday from 9:00
a.m. to noon in Room 3.
Canasta
Come out and join our friendly group
for a game of Canasta. We welcome
all levels of players. If you are new
to the game, we will be glad to teach
you. Join us on Fridays from 9:00 to
11:30 a.m. in Room 3. For more information,
Chess
Do you enjoy the game of chess?
Come out and make friends! Our
(Continued on page 9)
(Continued from page 8)
club is open to players of all levels.
We are primarily amateur players
simply out for the joy of casual
chess, although with enough interest,
we could organize small tournaments.
We meet on the second and
fourth Friday of each month in the
Evergreen Board Room from 10 a.m.
to noon and we ask for $2 per person
each time for the GWSA. And don’t
worry if you don’t have a chess set
— we have three sets as well as a
digital clock for those interested in a
time control!
Computer Mentoring
There are two mentors available every
Monday from 1-3 p.m. to answer
your questions. We can help with
Windows PCs and Android
smartphones and tablets. And now
we are able to assist iPad and iPhone
users!
If you are using a laptop computer,
please bring it with you. The fee is
$3 for members of the GWSA and $5
for non-members. Please register at
the front desk for each class before
joining us in the Computer Room.
Craft Group
The ladies of the Craft Club are very
busy making beautiful articles for our
store. We continue to make hats,
mitts and scarves to donate to the
needy. We have had a few of the
GWSA members also donating these
items so we can reach as many as
possible.
Thanks for all the wool donations
- we have lots now.
Guelph Wood Carving Club
est. Circa 1986
A well-established wood carving
club of mostly seniors (both men and
women) has operated in the Guelph
area for decades.
We do carving in the round, like
cartoon characters, birds and wildlife,
spoons, bowls, etc.
Other carving techniques include
relief carving, marquetry, and pyrography.
Training is available.
Meets Monday evening 6:00 pm-
9:00 pm in Evergreen Room 2.
Cribbage
Come on out on a Tuesday afternoon
for a friendly game of Cribbage in
Room 3 of the Evergreen Centre. The
room is open at 12:30 pm and we
start playing at 1:00 pm. Everyone is
welcome, and we play 8 games, with
prizes at the end of the afternoon. If
you are not sure how to play, we
have instructors to help.
Cross-country Ski Club
The GWSA Cross-country Ski Club
will ski both locally and at more distant
locations generally up to 1 hour
driving time, sometimes more. We
aim to ski on Tuesday mornings,
however, given the variability of our
local weather, this may vary and day
and time of outings will depend on
weather and snow conditions. Meeting
times and places will be communicated
to the membership via email
ahead of time. Participants must be
We meet Tuesday and Friday mornings
10 to noon and get together for
lunch at the Uptown Grill on the last
Friday of the month. Our annual fee
is $25/year.
Drumming
We gather in a circle. Different ages,
cultures, capabilities, backgrounds
and experience. The call of the drum
will bring us together. Someone
starts a simple beat, others join in,
and then we all join in. We close our
eyes, listen to each other, and listen
to ourselves. We all know each other
without saying a word, linked together
through percussion music. Drumming
feeds the soul.
Rhythm circles are the perfect environment
to explore ideas for sounding
together, creating exciting
grooves and having fun! We all have
rhythm! Some drums and percussion
instruments will be provided or bring
your own. Sessions are open to everyone.
Join us Tuesdays from 9:30-
10:30 a.m. in Room 3. Cost is $2.00
per session.
Phyllis (519-836-9415)
Donna (519-831-0943)
Line dancing is exercise not only for
the body but the mind as well. It’s an
excuse to get out, meet new friends,
enjoy good music, and no partner is
required. If you have never line
danced before or need a refresher, the
Introduction to Line Dancing is
where to start. Here you will learn
the basic steps and easier dances to
slower music. The Line Dance Step
Tutorial is an opportunity to learn
and practise steps not taught in the
Introduction to Line Dancing class
and will help prepare you for the Beyond
the Basics classes which are the
next step up from the Introduction to
Line Dancing. The Intermediate class
is for experienced line dancers looking
for a challenge.
We are a friendly group of amateur
photographers with equipment ranging
from mobile phones and pointand-shoot
cameras to fancy DSLR
models. We share a common interest
in photography as a hobby and we
learn from each other. New members
are always welcome. Our regular
meetings are on the last Monday of
every month in Room 4.
Pickleball
Pickleball is a sport in which four
players use solid paddles made of
wood or composite materials to hit a
perforated polymer ball over a net.
The sport shares features of other
racquet sports: the dimensions and
layout of a badminton court and a net
and rules similar to tennis, with a few
modifications.
This sport is for people of all
ages who are looking for some fun,
laughter, socialization and exercise.
It’s easy to learn, but can be challenging
for those with a competitive
nature. All levels of skill invited.
Pickleball equipment is provided.
Rug Hooking
We have been gathering as a group of
rug hookers at the Evergreen Centre
since February 2022. Traditional rug
hooking is both art and a craft. Many
beautiful and unique items are made
by pulling loops of fabric or yarn
through a stiff, woven base such as
burlap or linen. It is enjoyable, fun
and a very social hobby. Beginners
are welcome and we will help you
get started. The Rug Hooking Group
meets on Tuesday afternoon, 12-4, in
Room 2.
season. Every Monday, we carpool
by meeting at the lower Evergreen
Parking Lot by the Enabling Garden
Evergreen Snooker Club
The Evergreen Snooker Club is composed
of a group of active, friendly
players with skill levels covering the
full spectrum from learner/beginner
to accomplished player. If you are
interested in learning the game, or
have played in the past and want to
get back into it, please drop by the
Snooker Room. You will be assured
a warm welcome and a place to try
your hand at one of our three tables.
The Snooker Room is open weekdays
between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm and
any other time the Evergreen Centre
may be open.
The primary focus of the club is to
have fun, build friendships and socialize.
Your snooker skill level is
irrelevant, so don’t feel intimidated if
you are a beginner. Prospective
members may visit the club room up
to three times without charge to help
with their decision on whether to
join. While most of the current members
are men, there is a small group
of women who play regularly
(typically on Tuesday mornings), so
ladies, don’t be shy, give it a try.
Membership is available to all paid
-up members of the GWSA on payment
of the prescribed annual snooker
activity fee. The current fee of
$79.10 (plus tax) buys you access to
the Snooker Room any time it is open
and to all the snooker you care to
play.
Storytelling
Storytelling is on Tuesdays from
12:15 to 1:15 pm in Room 4 and even
more members of the Guelph Guild
of Storytellers will be joining to facilitate.
Let’s share your best storytelling
at regular public performances!
Cost $2.00 per session. Please sign
up on RecEnroll for a fun-filled activity!
Texas Hold ’Em
Why not come out and have fun with
us? We are averaging about 24 players
a week. We are situated in the
Dining Room. We charge $2 per
week and pretty well all of that goes
back to the GWSA. We play Tuesdays
& Fridays from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.
Each player starts off with $650 in
real casino chips, and, as we do not
play for money, we work on a point
system. The one with the most points
each week is the winner. We play
until there is only one player left or
8:30 pm comes, whichever is first.
We will gladly teach anyone who is
interested in playing. Just follow the
laughter to find us. We welcome everyone
who wants to play and enjoys
company. We have quite a few ladies
playing at present and would always
welcome more. We do not want to
become a men’s club! Remember,
you have to be a member of the
GWSA to play.
Writing Your Life Story
As you may know, the Writing Your
Life Story Activity Group, which
started last September, has proved
very popular and the members of that
group are well on their way to producing
a Life Story. I shall be starting
up a NEW GROUP in January 2024
and look forward to welcoming new
members on Thursday, January 11 at
2:00 p.m. in the Board Room. Working
as a group, you will find that your
writing skills improve as your memories
are revived, and we have found
that no one’s life is “boring”. We all
have stories to tell. For more information,
please contact Jennifer
We are open
Skipping Christmas by John Grisham
Did you know that John Grisham, the master of the legal thriller, has written a Christmas story? In
Skipping Christmas, Luther and Nora Krank’s daughter has gone off to Peru to volunteer. It will be the first
Christmas she has been away from home. The Kranks decide they will skip Christmas, no lights, no tree, no
gifts and no parties. Instead, they will go on a Caribbean cruise.
Who hasn’t fleetingly thought of escaping the busy holiday season for a lovely vacation. But, to actually
do this, leads to all kinds of complications. Skipping Christmas is a light hearted look at what happens
when you go against the social norms at this time of year.
The library also has a Christmas story by David Baldacci called the Christmas Train. We have other
Christmas themed books written by James Patterson, Debbie Macomber, Fern Michaels, Susan Mallery and
Anita Hughes. Take a look at our collection if you would like to get into the holiday spirit with a good
book.
Many of our patrons also enjoy doing puzzles, so we have created a Christmas puzzle for you.
The following 3 lines are from well known Christmas carols. We hope you enjoy trying to figure out
which ones they are from.
“Glories stream from heaven afar,”
“Later on, we’ll conspire,”
“There must have been some magic in that old silk hat they found,”
The answers can be found on page 38.
News from our Ontario Seniors Games Association - District 26
The Ontario Seniors Games Association (OSGA), District 26
competition was held at the KW Badminton Club in Kitchener on
October 21, 2023, and yielded some very positive results for our
GWSA players.
For those of you not familiar with what this is, the Ontario Seniors
Games Association is an organization to further promote events for
active seniors in our province and works in parallel to our GWSA. It is
broken down into 33 districts and we reside in District 26. For more
info, click the link Ontario Senior Games Association (OSGA) |
(osga55plus.ca).
Every alternate year, our members, in Cribbage, Pickleball, Table
Tennis, Badminton, Shuffleboard, etc., can participate in their event to
hopefully qualify for the OSGA Provincial Games and possibly the
Canadian Seniors Games.
In addition to just being a fun and socially connecting event, it is great
to watch, and even more fun to actually play in.
The GWSA Badminton Club placed in 6 events, winning as follows:
Gold +55 Mixed Doubles - Ha Pham and Charles Tse (former
GWSA member)
Gold +65 Mixed Doubles – Brigitte Geisler and Randy Taylor
Silver +65 Mixed Doubles – Elise Stanley and Allan Green
Gold +65 Ladies Doubles – Debbie Waitson and Brigitte Geisler
Gold +65 Men’s Doubles – Randy Taylor and George Spence
Silver +65 Men’s Doubles – Paul Wilmer and Dominic Muto
District 26 OSGA Leadership Team.
If you want to know more about our District or perhaps volunteer your
time, please reach out Felicia Urbanski at urbanski.felicia@yahoo.ca.
As with all our Seniors groups, we rely totally upon the dedicated
volunteers to make it happen…so if you want it to happen, please get
involved.
Art in the Hall once again presents the fantastic work of the Quilting Group for your viewing pleasure.
There is lots of time before Christmas to purchase one of these lovely created quilts. They will be on display
throughout the holiday season up until January 9, 2024. All proceeds from the sales are graciously donated
to the GWSA. If you are interested in joining the group, they meet Mondays from 12:30 - 4:00 p.m. in Room
You also still have a chance to enjoy the amazing work created by Bunka. If you have not heard of Bunka,
this is your opportunity to see fantastic creations. On your way to the library, outside Room 4 in the window
showcase, stop by to admire framed art that look like paintings! Bunka meets on Wednesdays, 9:00 a.m. to
Remembrance Day ceremony for the City of
You Just Can’t Keep
Good Seniors Down!
Inspired by the beautiful display
of poppies put on by St. John’s
Church in Elora, a group of
women from Riverside
Residences decided to make a
display of their own.
For almost a year, these women
dutifully knitted and crocheted to
create just over 2000 poppies.
The poppies were then crocheted
together, and made into wreaths,
table cloths, garland, and table
decorations.
These items were displayed in
their building’s common rooms.
The display was put up on November 1, 2023, and stayed up through Remembrance
Day.
This was a wonderful way to honour the men and women who have served, and are
serving in Canada’s Armed Forces.
VISUAL ARTS
Landscape Painting
In this course, students will learn how to create
artistic representations of natural environments such
as mountains, forests, waters, fields, coastlines and
sunsets. Landscape painting can be created using a
variety of water-based medium: acrylic, watercolour
and gouache. Although the realistic representation of
the natural world will be the main approach,
exploring landscape through illusion is not excluded.
The course will cover all that is needed to create
expressive and dynamic paintings: basic techniques,
colour mixing, tonal values, elements of
composition, effects of atmospheric perspective, the
ways to simplify the shapes and forms, and effective
editing of photographic references. Throughout the
course, there will be plenty of short demos, usually at
the beginning of the class. The course is intended for
beginners and intermediates. Just bring your
supplies, your passion for painting, and whatever
experience you have and you will grow as an artist
through expanding your observational and artistic
skills.
Course ID: 43745
Location: West End Community Centre (Room 2)
OsteoFit
Part of living well with osteoporosis and/or
osteoarthritis involves healthy eating and physical
activity. Physical activity plays an essential role in
the treatment of osteoporosis by ‘stimulating’ or
applying a load on our bones to maintain their
structure and strength. When treating osteoarthritis,
it is important to ensure proper alignment of joints as
well. Exercise and physical activity play a vital role
and contribute to individuals’ overall health and well
-being. Four types of exercise are necessary in the
management of osteoporosis and osteoarthritis:
strength, posture, and core stability, balance, and
weight bearing. Join us in this class to get moving,
improve your strength, balance, and posture,
and in turn, reduce your risk of falling.
SILVER BELLS
City sidewalks, busy sidewalks,
Dressed in holiday style,
In the air
There’s a feeling
of Christmas.
Children laughing
People passing
Meeting smile after smile
and on every street corner
You’ll hear
Silver bells, silver bells
It’s Christmas time in the city.
Ring-a-ling, hear them sing
Soon it will be Christmas day.
Strings of street lights,
Even stop lights,
Blink a bright red and green
As the shoppers rush
Home with their treasures.
Hear the snow crunch
See the kids bunch
This is Santa’s big scene
And above all this bustle
You’ll hear
Silver bells, silver bells
It’s Christmas time in the city.
Ring-a-ling, hear them sing
