Can you believe it’s September? The summer is going
by way too fast! It sure is good to feel warm though!
Like many of you, I will be glad when the construction
is all finished in the area. Having said that, I tend to
complain when the roads are bad and then I tend to
complain when they are fixing them! DOH!
My last “Message From The GWSA Board” was
distributed prior to our Annual General Meeting (AGM).
I want to step back for a moment and thank all those who
attended. Further, I want to take this opportunity to
highlight a couple of things that President Pat mentioned
for those that were unable to attend and/or did not receive
a copy of the Annual Report. As follows:
• It was important to acknowledge that the City of
Guelph has provided ongoing support to our
Association, and we have worked closely with them to
initiate new programs, services, and equipment to the
Evergreen Centre.
• The GWSA Board expressed deep appreciation to the
volunteers who serve on GWSA Committees and as
Activity Group Leaders. You have offered outstanding
programming and have been instrumental in getting
members back to activities with their friends.
• We received a notable number of grants which
required significant effort to prepare.
• We noted some of our successful programs/initiatives
like Dancing at the Evergreen or our new Welcome
Desk in the Foyer, the reopening of the Treasure Chest
which was a partnership with the City of Guelph and
the GWSA.
• Finally, Board members delegated Council on the
issue of the city’s Older Adult Strategy and our goal for the City to become an Age
Friendly Community.
More recently, your Board has been busy responding to some really important
documents. One of them is the Parks and Recreation Master Plan for the City of Guelph.
This affords us an opportunity to provide meaningful input into plans that can impact us.
Executive Director Linda had mentioned that Eric Poole, Project Manager of Recreation
Services, Culture and Recreation, met informally with our members in a facility pop-up
at the Evergreen for inpromptu input! Awesome!
For those of you who are Grandparents and/or Honorary Grandparents, we hope you
are celebrated Sunday, September 10th – Grandparents Day!
I continue to hope that you are active, involved, making friends and aging with dignity.
DIANE
Diane has been volunteering in the Book Nook at the
Evergreen Centre since 2022. She retired from banking a
few years ago and moved from Uxbridge to Guelph to be
near her family. As a new retiree, Diane wanted to
‘create’ her retirement rather than just have it ‘happen’ to
her. Volunteering for the GWSA provides her with the
opportunity to be engaged with people in her age group
with similar life experiences and interests. She both likes
and wants to be involved in her
community in some way in order to
feel useful, create new connections
and find meaning in her life.
Volunteering provides her with all of
this.
With a keen interest in keeping her
mind sharp, Diane says volunteering
in the Book Nook provides her with
the chance to learn new computer
skills. The time slot fits in with her
lifestyle and she loves to work
independently. She also wants to
emphasize that the other library
volunteers are great to work
alongside. With a love of many
genres of books, particularly
mysteries, Diane has also written
several book reviews for the Sentinel.
Diane is a member of the Into
Focus Photography Club and enjoyed
The Sentinel - September 2023 — Vol. 48, No. 1
participating in the walking group, both of which are a
great way to meet new people. With a background in the
study and practice of meditation, she facilitates weekly
classes for GWSA members and the general public at the
Evergreen Centre. Although this is a paid position through
the City of Guelph, the position demonstrates Diane’s
commitment and interest in helping others.
What would Diane say to someone who is thinking
about volunteering at the Evergreen? “It gives you
meaning and purpose, a reason to get
up in the morning. There are many
different roles at the Evergreen; you
can try a position and see if you like
it, if it’s a fit for you.”
To help make it a good fit, Diane
shares that she has experienced this
firsthand, and appreciates the way in
which Becky MacDonald, Recreation
Co-ordinator – Volunteers
accommodates each volunteer’s needs
and interests.
Thank you to Diane and all the
other Book Nook volunteers who
provide such a friendly, welcoming
and engaging experience for our
GWSA members.
FAMOUS CATS
Hamish McHamish, a long-haired ginger cat adopted
by the citizens of St. Andrews, Scotland, became
famous for his friendly, cat-about-town nature, and was
sought after by both tourists and locals for photo ops.
In 2014, a bronze statue was built in his honour.
Luck, the black Persian cat belonging to King
Charles I of England (1625-1649), was thought to bring
good luck. Strangely enough, the day after Luck passes
away, the king was arrested and beheaded.
In the Yumeji Art Museum in Japan, a black cat
named Kuronosuke works as manager and mascot.
Hired a year after the museum rescued him in 2016,
this professional feline now has his own uniform and
office.
Pablo Picasso owned a cat named Minou. The
Spanish artist produced many paintings with felines. In
2006, one titled Dora Mar au Chat, which featured
Minou in the background, was sold for more than $95
million.
At the fashionable Savoy Hotel in London, England,
the statue of Kaspar the cat is placed at the table to
dispel bad luck when there is a party of 13 people.
Trim was a seafaring tuxedo cat that sailed on
expeditions with British navigator Matthew Flinders.
Born aboard the HMS Reliance in 1799, the brave
kitten once fell overboard and managed to climb back
up by grabbing hold of a dangling rope. In 1996, a
bronze statue of Trim was placed at the Mitchell
Library in Sydney, Australia.
Morris the Cat was an orange tabby rescued by an
animal trainer in 1968.
Morris was hugely popular,
starring in 58 cat food
commercials during the
1970s. Morris won two
Picture Animal Top Star of
the Year (PATSY) Awards
in 1972 and 1973.
Beerbohm was the name of
a large tabby cat and resident
mouser at the Gielgud
Theatre in London, England.
His girlfriend Fleur was
another mouser who worked
at a nearby theatre. After
serving for 20 years,
Beerbohm passed away in 1995.
Pyewacket was the name of a Siamese cat actor that
won a PATSY Award for his role in the comedy film
Bell, Book and Candle (1958).
Guelph Transit is adjusting bus fares
and introducing a new pay-as-you-go program
The changes will come into effect on September 1, 2023.
Guelph Transit is making changes to its fare pricing and introducing a new monthly pay-as-you-go
fare cap program starting in September.
What’s changing to fares and transfers:
• Day passes will be increased from $8 to $8.40.
• Weekend transit pass will be discontinued.
• Single ride tickets remain the same ($2.80 for adults, $2.25 for discounted (or concession) fare holders).
• Riders will get an extra 30 minutes for transfers starting in September, as transfer time is being extended
from 60 minutes to 90 minutes.
Once you’ve tapped, your fares are capped: New pay-as-you-go program
Monthly passes will change to a pay-as-you-go monthly fare cap model. Instead of a monthly pass, riders
load their OnYourWay fare card with money and pay as they go. There will no longer be a need to buy a
monthly pass upfront each month.
With the monthly fare cap, riders pay for the first 32 single rides in a month, then tap and ride for free for
the rest of the month. Visit guelphtransit.ca for more details.
GWSA Group & Activity Reports
ALL Activity Groups require that you MUST have an up-to-date GWSA Membership to participate.
Art in the Hall
All of the art groups and artisans
will have an opportunity to show off
their wares and offer items for sale
if they wish. A portion of the cost
will go toward the GWSA, and staff
at the cash will be familiar with how
to process these payments and ensure
artists receive their funds,
again, if they wish to sell their creations.
A contract will be sent out to all
groups to review; it outlines how the
shows will run. I intend to change
the art monthly and to be present the
second Monday of each month to
put up a new show. Some shows
will run longer and we may have
special presentations.
I plan on going through the list of
groups alphabetically as presented
in the Sentinel. Please start to think
about the piece you would like to
hang, present and showcase.
Further information will be forwarded
to all groups.
Badminton
The Badminton Club held its annual
AGM March 23 and, unfortunately,
we were unable to find suitable volunteers
to fill either the President or
Vice-Presidents’ positions. Our
Club will therefore operate with 3
principal Directors (Activities,
Communication and Secretary) and
a temporary Director at Large who
will assist as needed.
With our new season beginning
April 1st, it didn’t take long to reach
our membership cap of 105. So, we
will once again restart our waiting
list. We hope to explore ways to
decrease or eliminate the waiting list
this year.
Community Outreach Badminton
Coaching also wrapped up its first
complete season since the COVID-
19 factor with 4 of our Coaches assisting
in 2 Guelph schools.
Our first 4-part Coaching Clinic
began May 4 and is full already.
The Sentinel - September 2023 — Vol. 48, No. 1
Planning is also underway for our
Spring Hike with a proposed Hilton
Falls route being considered.
Our Tuesday evening Badminton
has been temporarily disrupted but a
backup plan is in place. For further
information, call Jeff 519-993-1362.
After a busy year, including regular
playtimes, tournaments, clinics,
and social activities, the program
year is drawing to a close. Our year
is ending with some specific skillbased
micro clinics open to all
members who want to improve their
skills. The clinics are popular and
we are very fortunate to have several
skilled in-house members who
volunteer to share their expertise
with everyone.
Book Club 1
Our group meets in the Board Room
on the last Friday of each month
from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. For
September, our selection is “Desert
Star” by Michael Connelly. In October
we will be reading “The Diamond
Eye” by Kate Quinn. Monthly
fee is $3.00. At present, we have
a waiting list.
Bridge
GWSA welcomes all Bridge players
with a basic knowledge of the game
to enjoy playing bridge in a friendly
and comfortable environment. We
offer both Recreational and Duplicate
Bridge. No partner? No problem!
We mix and mingle with a
room full of eager players so that
everyone has a partner for any of
our regularly scheduled games.
Bridge-Recreational
Join us for recreational bridge in the
afternoon or evening.
Tuesdays 6:30-9:00 pm Evergreen
Room 3
Thursdays 12:30-3:30 pm Evergreen
Room 3
Bridge-Duplicate
This group is for individuals who
have already taken bridge lessons
and would like to work on improving
their game. Volunteers are on
hand to coach you.
We request you know the Bidding
Basics. We will make you comfortable
playing Duplicate Bridge with
Duplicate Boards and using Bidding
Boxes.
Fridays 9:00-11:30 am, Evergreen
Room 3. Bridge-Duplicate will be
inactive from June to September.
Bunka
Bunka embroidery is created by using
a unique combination of punch
needle and special silk-like rayon
thread. When completed, many pictures
resemble delicately shaded
paintings. In fact, the needle is held
and operates in much the same manner
as an artist’s brush or pencil. We
do not teach classes or have an instructor,
so you should have some
experience in the craft, and members
are required to purchase their
own supplies. Every Wednesday
from 9:15 a.m. to noon in Room 3.
Currently there is a wait list.
See Bunkawithflair.com.
Canasta
Come out and join our friendly
group for a game of Canasta. We
welcome all levels of players. If you
are new to the game, we will be glad
to teach you. Join us on Fridays
from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. in Room 3.
Contact canastagwsa@gmail.com
for more information.
Evergreen Canoe Club
Whether you are an experienced
canoeist or someone new to the
sport, the club training program can
help you either hone existing skills
or teach you the many techniques of
river canoe navigation.
Be aware though that membership
(Continued on page 9)

(Continued from page 8)
is limited and a waitlist exists. So, if
you meet the physical requirements
and are comfortable on the water,
put your name on the wait list.
All new members are required to
complete a two evening inclassroom
training program and an
on-the-water evaluation.
Our canoe outings are every
Thursday and Friday from May to
the end of September, weather permitting.
Chess
Do you enjoy the game of chess?
Come out and make friends! Our
club is open to players of all levels.
We are primarily amateur players
simply out for the joy of casual
chess, although with enough interest,
we could organize small tournaments.
We meet on the second and
fourth Friday of each month in the
Evergreen Board Room from 10
a.m. to noon and we ask for $2 per
person each time for the GWSA.
And don’t worry if you don’t have a
chess set — we have three sets as
well as a digital clock for those interested
in a time control!
Computer Mentoring
There are two mentors available
every Monday from 1-3 p.m. to answer
your questions. We can help
with Windows PCs and Android
smartphones and tablets. And now
we are able to assist iPad and iPhone
users!
If you are using a laptop computer,
please bring it with you. The fee
is $3 for members of the GWSA and
$5 for non-members. Please register
at the front desk for each class before
joining us in the Computer
Room.
Craft Group
The ladies of the Craft Club are very
busy making beautiful articles for
our store. We continue to make hats,
mitts and scarves to donate to the
needy. We have had a few of the
GWSA members also donating
these items so we can reach as many
as possible. We need wool donations
of all types. Come see our
NEW Treasure Chest, finally rebuilt.
Guelph Wood Carving Club
est. Circa 1986
A well-established wood carving
club of mostly seniors (both men
and women) has operated in the
Guelph area for decades.
We do carving in the round, like
cartoon characters, birds and wildlife,
spoons, bowls, etc.
Other carving techniques include
relief carving, marquetry, and pyrography.
Training is available.
Meets Monday evening 6:00 pm-
9:00 pm in Evergreen Room 2.
Cribbage
Come on out on a Tuesday afternoon
for a friendly game of Cribbage
in Room 3 of the Evergreen
Centre. The room is open at 12:30
pm and we start playing at 1:00 pm.
Everyone is welcome, and we play 8
games, with prizes at the end of the
afternoon. If you are not sure how to
play, we have instructors to help.
Darts Club
The sport of Darts is unique in several
ways: the equipment is inexpensive,
it only requires a small amount
of space, and no special clothing is
required. Age, gender, size or physical
abilities have no bearing on the
Line Dancing
Evergreen Auditorium
Phyllis (519-836-9415)
Donna (519-831-0943)
Line dancing is exercise not only
for the body, but the mind as
well. It’s an excuse to get out, meet
new friends, enjoy good music, and
no partner is required. If you have
never line danced before or need a
refresher, the Introduction to Line
Dancing is where to start. Here you
will learn the basic steps and easier
dances to slower music. The Line
Dance Step Tutorial is an opportunity
to learn and practise steps not
taught in the Introduction to Line
Dancing class and will help prepare
you for the Beyond the Basics classes
which are the next step up from
the Introduction to Line Dancing.
The Intermediate class is for experienced
line dancers looking for a
challenge.
Mah Jongg
Mah Jongg has started up again in
Room 4 on Mondays from 2:30-
4:30 p.m., except the last Monday of
the month when it will be in the
Dining Room. It is a game played
with tiles, similar to Dominoes. Instruction
is available for those who
don’t know how to play.
Peer Learning
Peer Learning is for seniors who
like to have a good discussion with
a small, friendly group. It’s a great
way to meet new people and have
fun while learning. Topics for Fall,
Into Focus Photography
We are a friendly group of amateur
photographers with equipment ranging
from mobile phones and pointand-shoot
cameras to fancy DSLR
models. We share a common interest
in photography as a hobby and
we learn from each other. New
members are always welcome. Our
regular meetings are on the last
Monday of every month in Room 4.
If you are interested in joining,
contact Stu McCannell
(smccannell@rogers.com).
Pickleball
Pickleball is a sport in which four
players use solid paddles made of
wood or composite materials to hit a
perforated polymer ball over a net.
The sport shares features of other
racquet sports: the dimensions and
layout of a badminton court and a
net and rules similar to tennis, with
a few modifications.
This sport is for people of all
ages who are looking for some fun,
laughter, socialization and exercise.
It’s easy to learn, but can be challenging
for those with a competitive
nature. All levels of skill invited.
Pickleball equipment is provided.
Scrabble
Scrabble is back! Come join us for
Scrabble at 1 pm to 3:30 pm every
Thursday in the Hallway near the
Library. All skills from newbie to
expert. Drop-ins are welcome or call
me for more information. Previous
members, please join us again.
Brand-new players are most welcome.
All you need is a GWSA
membership! $2 fee per visit.
Any questions? Call or email Sebastian.
Phone: 647-580-5780.
Shuffleboard
Come on out and join our group.
Enjoy some gentle exercise, friendship
and fun. Membership is available
to all paid-up GWSA members
for a $10 fee every six months. Register
the first time you play. Beginners
are welcome and instruction is
available. The group plays Tuesdays
and Wednesdays from 1 to 3 p.m.
Silver Strummers
The ukulele orchestra is an unqualified
success story! There are
now 30 individuals who have joined
the Silver Strummers. We welcome
ALL skill levels, beginner through
advanced. We will provide you with
all the information you will need to
get started. If you would like to try
the universally accessible and
friendly instrument of the ukulele,
please contact Eva Quan 519-820-
1032.
Silvertones
The Silvertones members practise
weekly in Room 3 on Fridays from
2 to 3:30 p.m. We do have a few
openings so please contact Doreen
Muir @ 519-831-8323 if you would
like to join our choir or would
like more information. You do not
have to be able to read music, just
have a love for singing.
Rug Hooking
We have been gathering as a group
of rug hookers at the Evergreen
Centre since February 2022. Traditional
rug hooking is both art and a
craft. Many beautiful and unique
items are made by pulling loops of
fabric or yarn through a stiff, woven
base such as burlap or linen. It is
enjoyable, fun and a very social
hobby. Beginners are welcome and
we will help you get started. The
Rug Hooking Group meets on Tuesday
afternoon, 12-4, in Room 2.
Contact: Kathy McCallum, 226-
Skiing
For the 2023 ski season, it costs
$10.00 plus HST to join the Ski
Club. You register and pay for the
Downhill Ski Club at the front desk
of the Evergreen Centre. It helps to
own a 5-7 Pass purchased from Blue
Mountain well before the start of the
ski season. Every Monday, we carpool
by meeting at the lower Evergreen
Parking Lot by the Enabling
Garden at 8:00 am, drive to Blue
Mountain, and return to Guelph by
6:00 pm. Contact Bob Shearer 519-
831-4093 for Ski Club information.
Evergreen Snooker Club
The Evergreen Snooker Club is
composed of a group of active,
friendly players with skill levels
covering the full spectrum from
learner/beginner to accomplished
player. If you are interested in learning
the game, or have played in the
past and want to get back into it,
please drop by the Snooker Room.
You will be assured a warm welcome
and a place to try your hand at
one of our three tables. The Snooker
Room is open weekdays between
9:00 am and 4:00 pm and any other
time the Evergreen Centre may be
open.
The primary focus of the club is
to have fun, build friendships and
socialize. Your snooker skill level is
irrelevant, so don’t feel intimidated
if you are a beginner. Prospective
members may visit the club room up
to three times without charge to help
with their decision on whether to
join. While most of the current
members are men, there is a small
group of women who play regularly
(typically on Tuesday mornings), so
ladies, don’t be shy, give it a try.
Membership is available to all
paid-up members of the GWSA on
payment of the prescribed annual
snooker activity fee. The current fee
of $79.10 (plus tax) buys you access
to the Snooker Room any time it is
open and to all the snooker you care
to play.
Texas Hold ’Em
Why not come out and have fun
with us? We are averaging about 24
players a week. We are situated in
the Dining Room. We charge $2 per
week and pretty well all of that goes
back to the GWSA. We play Tuesdays
& Fridays from 6:30 to 8:30
pm.
Each player starts off with $650 in
real casino chips, and, as we do not
play for money, we work on a point
(Continued on page 11)

11
(Continued from page 10)
system. The one with the most points each week is the
winner. We play until there is only one player left or
8:30 pm comes, whichever is first.
We will gladly teach anyone who is interested in
playing. Just follow the laughter to find us. We welcome
everyone who wants to play and enjoys company.
We have quite a few ladies playing at present and
would always welcome more. We do not want to become
a men’s club! Remember, you have to be a member
of the GWSA to play.
Writers Club
If you enjoy the power of the pen, come join the Writers
Club. We can toss around ideas and topics to get the
creative juices flowing. Then let’s share the resulting
written shape for constructive comments, while enjoying
the company of others. Please feel welcome to join
the journey. We will meet the 1st and 3rd Wednesday
of the month in the Board Room, from 1-3 p.m. There
is a weekly fee of $2 for the GWSA. Contact Susan
Jackson 519-265-3246.
Walking Club
Do you like to walk during the spring, summer and
fall? Do you like to have company when you walk?
If so, joining the Walking Club is a great way to exercise
with lots of fresh air, enjoy nature and beautiful
scenery, and make new friends while discovering the
trails in the area.
You can register for the Walking Club’s 2023 walking
season online through RecEnroll or at the front desk of
the Evergreen Centre. The annual fee is $10 and you
Trailhead on Thursday mornings at 8:45 am (location
will be emailed prior to walk). Walks are on…rain or
shine.
Walks are at your own pace and you must arrange
your own transportation to the Trailhead-local trail or
Watercolour Painters
The Evergreen Watercolour Painters provides an opportunity
for watercolour painters to practise their hobby
along with others sharing the same interest, while encouraging
one another and receiving information, ideas
and inspiration. While we do not offer classes or lessons,
we welcome accomplished watercolour painters.
There is a small annual membership fee and membership
with the GWSA is required. We meet in Room 2
from 12:30 to 4 p.m. on the 1st and 5th Wednesday of
the month, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the third
Many thanks to all who attend our dances every month. We will keep going as long as you
ART IN THE HALL
Art in the Hall proudly featured the Guelph Carving Club in the glass display cases outside
Room 4. Their talent and craftmanship is top notch! If you are interested in seeing more of
what they do, they meet Mondays from 6 pm to 9 pm at the Evergreen Room 2. If you
missed their display at the beginning of the summer, you will have an opportunity again
with their next display, date to be determined.
SILVERTONES CHOIR
Do you love to sing, do you read music, or maybe you don’t read music, but you’ve thought of
joining a choir for the love of singing and fellowship? We are a group of about 50 to 60 seniors
who get together from September to mid-June on Friday afternoons from 2:00 to 3:30 pm to sing
and socialize.
In the past, we sang out at long term
care homes, retirement homes,
participated in the Centre’s annual
variety show and performed for other
Centre events. During COVID-19,
these activities had to be put on hold
and our practices were virtual. We are
back to practicing at the Centre in
Room 3 and slowly getting back out
into the community again to do what
we love...entertain with song!
If you are interested in joining our
group, please call Doreen Muir at 519
-831-8323 or email at
muird9007@gmail.com for more
information. Limited space available.
VISUAL ARTS
Landscape Painting
In this course, students will learn how to create artistic
representations of natural environments such as
mountains, forests, waters, fields, coastlines and sunsets.
Landscape painting can be created using a variety of
water-based medium: acrylic, watercolour and gouache.
Although the realistic representation of the natural world
will be the main approach, exploring landscape through
illusion is not excluded. The course will cover all that is
needed to create expressive and dynamic paintings: basic
techniques, colour mixing, tonal values, elements of
composition, effects of atmospheric perspective, the ways
to simplify the shapes and forms, and effective editing of
photographic references. Throughout the course, there
will be plenty of short demos, usually at the beginning of
the class. The course is intended for beginners and
intermediates. Just bring your supplies, your passion for
painting, and whatever experience you have and you will
grow as an artist through expanding your observational
and artistic skills.
OsteoFit
Part of living well with osteoporosis and/or osteoarthritis
involves healthy eating and physical activity. Physical
activity plays an essential role in the treatment of
osteoporosis by ‘stimulating’ or applying a load on our
bones to maintain their structure and strength. When
treating osteoarthritis, it is important to ensure proper
alignment of joints as well. Exercise and physical activity
play a vital role and contribute to individuals’ overall
health and well-being. Four types of exercise are
necessary in the management of osteoporosis and
osteoarthritis: strength, posture, and core stability,
balance, and weight bearing. Join us in this class to get
moving, improve your strength, balance, and posture,
and in turn, reduce your risk of falling.
Book Review by Diane Dyke
The Golden Son by Shilpi Somaya Gowda
The Golden Son is a wonderful story set in two countries, India and the United States.
The main character, Anil, is a young Indian man who dreams of moving to America and
becoming a doctor. However, Anil’s father is the head of their clan and the arbitrator of
disputes between clan members. As the oldest son, Anil is expected to follow in his father’s
footsteps. Gowda explores Anil’s struggle between wanting freedom to pursue his own path
and the family responsibilities he feels he must honour.
When Anil moves to America, he leaves behind his childhood friend, Leena. She dreams
of living a life like her parents. They enjoyed a happy life filled with love and family. Her
parents arrange a marriage for her to a man in another village. But the happy life she hoped
for is elusive and she discovers how life can be hard and sometimes unbelievably cruel.
Gowda creates beautifully rich characters and explores their struggles and triumphs. She
also gives us a glimpse of life in rural India as well as the hectic life of a medical resident in
the United States. The Golden Son is a well-crafted story that will keep you engaged to the
very end.
EXPLORING EUROPE
by Anne Cookson
I’ll never forget the trip I took in the
summer of 1967, all across Europe. I was a
teenager exploring a different world than the
one I was familiar with. It was my father who
had the good idea of having me go with other
young students that just graduated from high
school, before they attended college or
university. I was excited and looking forward
to meeting other students I had never met, as
we were all travelling across different parts of
Europe.
This trip was organized by Horizon
Holidays Tours, and the host who was
arranging these student tours had weekly
meetings at his house. We had our itinerary
with the list of places and hotels we were
going to visit. It would be the first time I had
experience in getting my passport and
vaccinations all ready for this special holiday.
We were assigned to groups as there were
many of us going on these excursions. Each
group comprised of an experienced tour
guide who was responsible for being sure we
were safe and escorted us throughout the
summer trip.
We were to travel across France,
Switzerland, Germany, England and Italy. I
loved every minute of it! This was my first
experience flying in a plane from Toronto to
New York. As we arrived in New York, the
huge cruise ship was waiting for us at New
York Harbor. Once on the ship, the
passengers waved excitedly at crowds below
on the dock as the ship blasted its horn and
the view from the dock became a distant blur.
It took about five days but, as we were on the
ship, I was able to smell and appreciate the
massive endless beautiful ocean ahead and
observe other ships passing by us.
Upon our arrival at the Port of Le Harve,
we were placed into 12 groups. I loved the
fact that I was feeling my growing
independence as this was my first time away,
many miles from my family, and I was
grateful that our small group got along well
together.
We went on the small mini
Volkswagen vans, visiting the
Paris countryside, going to
the small village cafes, and
buying our cheese, bread, and fruit,
and sat out in the sunny weather enjoying our
country picnic as we watched the cows
grazing in the pasture. I even had the nerve to
stand up on the seats of the van like others
did as it travelled through the cities we were
visiting to get a better view of our
surroundings.
We explored and hiked the Swiss Alps and
cruised down the Rhine River as we sang the
popular ‘60s songs. I remember visiting
Venice, Italy and our group taking a gondola
ride down the Grand Canal.
I was impressed when I visited London and
by some of the old cobblestone worn
sidewalks, and the tea shops with their
scones, tasty berry jams with Devonshire
cream, and their choice of sweet herbal or
black teas to choose from.
In fact, at all the regions I visited through
this wonderful trip I loved, the food I ate, and
had no concerns about trying different ethnic
European dishes, it was good experience for
me.
The two months went quickly and I so
appreciated the wisdom my father had in
allowing me to go on this European
adventure. I look back at this trip as a forever
reminder of how blessed I was for taking a
trip across Europe when I could. Right now, I
explore Canada, which reminds me of the
European countryside with the vast B.C. and
Alberta mountain ranges, the Atlantic and
Pacific oceans, and beautiful old-growth
forests, the fishing villages along the B.C.
and Maritime provinces. There is so much
that I appreciate after getting a taste of
Europe and how much it reminds me of
landscapes of our beautiful country I call
Canada that I will continue to explore.
