Here at Giggles and Scribbles we believe
our job is not just to prepare children
intellectually for school but also, and
perhaps more importantly, to develop them
emotionally and socially. We aim to work
alongside Whanau to help develop and instil
solid moral values that prepare children to be
thoughtful, kind and to develop empathy.
Our philosophy focuses on providing children
with the skills and tools to play with and
alongside other children; to be able to
make friends and retain them, valuing the
enrichment of friendships. We believe in
the value of teaching children to be kind,
empathic and to have the ability to selfregulate
their emotions. We focus on grace
and courtesy, role modelling, respect and
good manners. We have found that providing
boundaries and setting clear expectations
help children to feel safe and secure.
Giggles and Scribbles foster an inclusiveness
environment and welcome children and staff
from different cultures from around the globe,
currently embracing 17 different ethnicities
attending our centre. We are privileged to
be able to learn about and celebrate with
families about their multi-cultural heritage
and value the many different diversities
within our preschool whanau.
We weave values such as loyalty,
perseverance, independence and
inclusiveness into our curriculum, believing
them to be as equally important as providing
a varied, stimulating and well prepared
learning environment.
We value our special relationships made
with our Local Primary Schools, aligning
our children’s values and expectations so
they experience a successful and enjoyable
transition from preschool to school. Our in
house transition to school programme, caters
for children over 4 years of age, ensuring
they are well equipped with the necessary

Effective communication is critical for
collaborative relationships between home
and the centre. Individual learning goals are
set regularly for every child in partnership
with parents. Monthly learning stories are
provided alongside comprehensive reports
which will provide parents with a precise
understanding of where their child is at on
their learning journey. It could be that they
are developing the ability to take turns, build
friendships or it could be that they have
shown an interest in identifying letters in
the alphabet.
We need critical thinkers. Children who can
think outside of the box. They are our future
entrepreneurs! At Giggles and Scribbles we
believe it’s important to provide a balance
of equipment and resources that challenge
the thought process of children. Some of our
equipment and resources have a specific and
intentional outcome. Children gain a sense
of achievement and accomplishment from
completing the activity, progressing their
learning forward. It’s equally important to
provide children with open ended resources
to enable constructive play opportunities.
Children need to be children! We believe in
having fun, getting dirty and exploring with
every element of their senses. We know that
by the time they leave Giggles and Scribbles
they are emotionally sound, respectful,
polite and have an enquiring mind that
loves to learn.

A Natural and
Sustainable
Environment
At Whippersnappers, embracing a
sense of curiosity, fun, nurturing and
collaboration are the key values that
underpin our philosophy.
As a teaching team, we believe ‘we teach
who we are’, which is why you will see
teachers down at the children’s level,
building sandcastles, reading books,
sharing their musical talents or getting
messy and creative with the children.
We believe for children to learn values,
respect and kindness towards others
they need a well supported purposefully
prepared environment. To have the
freedom to explore, play, make mistakes
and take risks, where the only boundaries
are safety.
Primary caregiving forms the basis
of our practice across all age groups.
Each child that joins our centre has an
assigned ‘key teacher’ who through
reciprocal relationships becomes your
child’s expert within our centre. Their
role includes nurturing their emotional
well-being while supporting them with
their learning and development. Having
a strong sense of belonging creates an
environment where children are able
to actively learn through their play and
exploration.
The natural environment and
sustainability are both important aspects

spaces and working gardens that the
children actively contribute to caring for,
alongside worm farms and chickens. The
children have the responsibility and pride
of caring for our chickens, feeding them
and collecting eggs which are used for
baking with the children.
Whippersnappers have established
strong links within our local community
and participate in a number of local
excursions including regular trips to
the local library, parks, visiting shops
and termly visits to the local primary
schools. We also value the expertise
of external extra curricular facilitators
and participate in weekly run inhouse
programmes.
We proudly operate a transition to
school programme for children aged
over 4 years. Developed over time this
successful programme expertly weaves
the ECE curriculum with the School
Curriculum Key Competencies to ensure
a successful transition from Early
Childhood Education to Primary School.
