The SeatSmart recycling
programme is removing
potentially unsafe child car
seats from circulation and
making journeys safer.
The Council partnered with Seatsmart
in March 2016 to have old car seats
recycled at a heavily subsidised rate.
186 car seats have been dropped off
at the Pines Resource Recovery Park
which equals 651 kg of plastic and
93 kg of metal being diverted from
landfill.
Selwyn residents can take their
unwanted car seats to the Pines
Resource Recovery Park for a $15
charge (normally $25).
The seats are dismantled through
social enterprise groups or
Department of Corrections community
work programmes. The recovered
plastic is recycled into products for the
building industry, metal parts are taken
to metal recyclers, and the harnesses
will be used by Karkt NZ and The
Green Collective who make handmade
bags.
Selwyn School Road Safety
Coordinator Stephanie Hautler says all
car seats have an expiry date on them
and over time seats can be damaged
from UV light, heat, general wear and
tear or in a crash. Residents can find
information about how to check a
seat’s expiry date at www.seatsmart.
co.nz. Locally, the Council has trained a
number of volunteers as child restraint
technicians who check car seat safety
and install seats for free. Further
information is available on the Selwyn
Car Seat Champions Facebook page.
Booster and convertible seats can
be recycled through the recycling
programme, along with capsules, but
polystyrene seats are not part of the
programme.
The Pines Resource Recovery Park
is located at 183 Burnham School
Road and is open Monday to Friday,
9am-4.30pm, and from 10am-4pm on
Saturday and Sunday.
Give your child the best
possible start
If you’re looking for an early education centre for your child,
enrolling with The Cat’s Pyjamas in Rolleston or West Melton
could give your little one a head start.
The Cat’s Pyjamas Preschool and Nursery
are amongst the top 10% of all early
childhood services in New Zealand, an
achievement that early childhood teacher
and owner-operator, Tracy Summerfield, is
excited about.
Both our Rolleston and West Melton
centres achieved a “Very Well Placed” 4
year review from the Education Review
Office (ERO) last year. Our teachers always
work incredibly hard, and it’s nice to be
rewarded with that validation”, says Tracy
who runs The Cat’s Pyjamas with her
husband, Gavin.
We focus on quality education and care.
All our teachers are qualified in early
childhood education and registered.
Our purpose-built facilities and spacious
outdoor areas have been designed to meet
the development needs of young children.
With excellent teacher to child ratios, The
Cat’s Pyjamas instils a culture of kindness
and respect and creates a welcoming
environment where children blossom and
families feel included.
“We’ve had wonderful support from the
local communities since opening 11 years
ago in Rolleston and eight years ago in
West Melton, and we’re starting to see
siblings come through too. We believe
in constant learning and investing in
professional development and plan to stay
at the forefront of early childhood research,
to keep improving and to do the best we
possibly can for our children,” says Tracy.
