16 Wednesday January 29 2020 Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Fitzsimon shuns Olympic bid for the time being • By Jacob Page WEST MELTON’S Tegan Fitzsimon has decided not to have a tilt at a potential Olympic berth in Las Vegas with her horse Windermere Cappuccino this year. The 29-year-old will now see out the New Zealand season and look at competing in Australia in winter instead. Fitzsimon and her nine-yearold horse won the FEI New Zealand World Cup equestrian series three weeks ago and earned the right to compete in the world final in Las Vegas in April. The duo were on the long list for Olympic selection for Tokyo in July and August and Fitzsimon was the only New Zealandbased rider to be considered to make the team. “After much thought, I have decided not to take Windermere Cappuccino (Vollie) overseas to campaign these opportunities any further. “It is a decision that has not come easily. However at this point in time I feel like it is not the correct decision in the best interests of myself or Vollie. “I look forward to finishing the season here in New Zealand and then planning an easier step across the Tasman mid-winter as a starting point,” she said. Fitzsimon said future Olympic campaigns were still a possibility and she did not think this would be her only chance. • By Jacob Page SOFTBALLER Jacob Davidson is the lone Canterbury face named in the Junior Black Sox squad for next month’s under-18 World Cup in Palmerston North. The 16-year-old, who plays baseball for Selwyn as a pitcher said he was surprised by the call-up. “There’s been a lot of work that has gone in behind the scenes so to make it in this team for the first time is great.” The event begins on February 22, with the Junior Black Sox opening the tournament against Japan, the silver medallist at the last World Cup. The final will be played on March 1. Jacob is also a national representative in baseball as a pitcher, he says juggling both sports has mostly a positive impact on his play. “When I’m catching (in softball) I’m still working with the pitchers on calling a game and working out what pitches to throw, just like I would be if I was pitching in baseball. “It does mean I don’t get many days off.” SPORT SELWYN TIMES Canty player selected in national softball squad Jacob focuses on softball on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday and switches to baseball for his Selwyn club on a Thursday and Sunday. Twelve teams from around the world will compete in the weeklong World Cup event. Fellow Cantabrians Hunter Simpson and Kotiti Patea will be nontravelling reserves. Coach Thomas Makea said he was excited by the talent on show. “We have set goals and observed these athletes over the past Jacob 12 months, which Davidson culminated at the justcompleted under-18 nationals. “They displayed their skills, but also a lot of enthusiasm, passion and intensity to their games, which is something that the management team was pleased to see. “We have selected a wellbalanced squad with a lot of these players able to play multiple positions which helps in the make-up of the defence.
