DEFENDING champions
Leeston-Southbridge have lost
their lead in the Canterbury
Country premier 45-over
competition after losing their
top-of-the-table match with
Oxford on Saturday.
A brutal 110 off 78 balls from
all-rounder Tim Gruijters was
not enough as Oxford reached
their 270-run target with three
wickets and eight balls to spare.
Leeston-Southbridge suffered
their second consecutive defeat
and were leap-frogged by Oxford
on the table with three rounds
to go.
Half centuries to opener Calvin
Scott (72) and an unbeaten 52
from wicket-keeper David Fulton
got the hosts home.
In other matches, third place
Cheviot kept in touch with the
leaders thanks to a commanding
183-run win over fourth-placed
Southbrook.
Half centuries to Will Smith
(85), Chris Burnett (56) and
Henry Workman (50) helped
Cheviot to 269/6.
Southbrook were never in the
run-chase and were bowled out
for 86 in reply.
Weedons dented fifth-placed
Sefton’s slim chances of making
the top four thanks to a 98-run

with opener Todd Inness scoring
65 to anchor the innings.
Sefton could only muster 146
all out in the 33rd over with
James Richards and Devon
Nightingale each taking three
wickets.
Darfield lifted themselves to
mid-table with a confidence-boosting
58-run win over Lincoln.
Jesse Frew led the way with 60
for the hosts at Darfield Domain
as they made 234/8.
Frew then turned hero with the
ball taking five for 22 as Lincoln
were bowled out for 176.
There are three rounds remaining
in the competition and this
weekend, Lincoln host Sefton,
Weedons welcome Oxford,
Cheviot travel to play Leeston-
Southbridge and Darfield hit the
road to play Southbrook.

Canterbury Country will
travel to play Marlborough this
weekend with the winner getting
home-field advantage for their
Hawke Cup Zone final on February
15.
The winner of that final will
earn a Hawke Cup challenge at
the end of February,

THERE WERE wins for
Rolleston-Killinchy, Kirwee-
Springston and West Melton
as the Canterbury Country
tennis competition resumed on
Saturday.
Kirwee-Springston beat Tai
Tapu 11-5, while Rolleston-
Killinchy downed Prebbleton-
Lincoln 10-6 and unbeaten West
Melton beat winless Fernside
12-4.
It was the Rolleston-Killinchy
women who set-up the win,
sweeping all four singles matches
against Prebbleton-Lincoln.

Canterbury Bati won the
Rolleston Nines rugby league
tournament at Foster Park on
Saturday.
The tournament is the annual
preseason event before the rugby
league season.
the four men’s singles matches
were split 2-2.
Templeman won all three of
her matches including doubles
and mixed doubles while Jackson
won two out of three, only losing
her mixed doubles encounter
with Ryan Vincent against
Thomas Andrew and Cassidy
Sprott when the tie was already
decided.
West Melton lead the competition
at the halfway point with
five wins from five ties, followed
by Rolleston-Killinchy in second
and Prebbleton-Lincoln in third,
The sixth round will see West
Melton host Kirwee-Springston,
Tai Tapu welcome Rolleston-
Killinchy and Fernside travel to
Prebbleton-Lincoln.
Canterbury Bati beat the Burnham
Chevaliers in the final 24-0.
The team, made up of Fijians
within the Canterbury community
won the fourth edition of the
tournament.
Teams from Halswell,
Sydenham, Ashburton and
Riccarton also took part.
