Elementary’s Wildcat families, the

first graduation rate from the Florida

Department of Education. It had a

graduation rate of 96.7, well above the

state average of 86.9. WHS was one

of 19 OCPS traditional high schools to

earn a graduation rate above 90%.

The staff at Windermere

Preparatory School volunteered

for a day at Give Kids The World.

More than 140 faculty members

and staff spent a morning helping

to switch seasonal decorations.

What would have taken days for the

GKTW staff to complete was finished

in a few short hours and enabled the

GKTW staff to focus on the resident

children and their families. It also allowed

WPS’s staff to connect with

one of the school’s service partners

in a new way and provided a great

way to transition to the new year

and spring semester.

For the 17th year, Oakland was

named a 2019 Tree City USA by

representatives of the Arbor Day

Foundation in honor of the town’s

commitment to effective urban forest

management. Oakland achieved

this recognition by meeting the program’s

four requirements: a tree

board or department, a tree care

ordinance, an annual community

forestry budget of at least $2 per

capita, and an Arbor Day observance

and proclamation. The town

far exceeds these standards and

also requires developers to replace

trees during construction. In 2019,

staff oversaw the installation of more

than 300 trees throughout the town.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Unity

Parade and Celebration last month.

The procession honored the life and

Mr. Ortiz is the director of the Samuel

Proctor Oral History Program and a

professor of history at the University

of Florida. His newest book, An

African American and Latinx History

of the United States, is the recipient

of the 2018 PEN Oakland-

Josephine Miles Award for Literary

Excellence. The celebration program

included the presenting of the colors

by Ocoee High School’s JROTC;

Ocoee resident Sherrí Gladney

sang the national anthem; and sixthgrader

Christopher Forsythe,

winner of last year’s Ocoee Black

History Month Essay Contest, recited

his award-winning essay.

Ocoee was named a 2019 Healthy

Community Champion by officials of

the Florida Department of Health.

The city was among 33 communities

to receive this honor during the

past year. Ocoee was recognized

for building a sustainable community

and adopting planning-and-urbandesign

best practices. These efforts

increase community connectivity,

provide for different modes of travel,

and increase access to facilities, services

and activities to improve overall

health, physical activity and social

interaction. The city is also in the

process of updating its parks, which

includes the addition of interactive

and stimulating play equipment and

assessing bicycle and pedestrian

connectivity to parks. Another highlight

was Ocoee’s on-site health clinic

that provides city employees with

easy access to wellness facilities and

schedule for its 2020 United Soccer

League (USL) League One season,

presented by Orlando Health.

at Lake Nona on March 29, the Tour

de Cure is ADA’s premier fundraising

The 19th annual Windermere

Run Among the Lakes 5K and

10K will be held April 4 and start
