Orange County Public Schools
celebrated 150 years this past
December. The district was founded
Dec. 11, 1869, with the formation of
the Board of Public Instruction. W.C.
Roper, A.C. Caldwell and Z.H.
Mason became the first three board
members, and William A. Lovell
was named the first superintendent.
To mark the special anniversary,
several Orlando-area landmarks,
including the Lake Eola Fountain,
“Orlando” sign at Camping World
Stadium, Amway Center Spire, Dr.
Phillips Center for the Performing
Arts, The Wheel at Icon Park on
International Drive, Rosen Centre
and more, were illuminated orange
in support of OCPS. Orlando Mayor
Buddy Dyer also proclaimed Dec.

for a day at Give Kids The World.
More than 140 faculty members

What would have taken days for the

in a few short hours and enabled the
GKTW staff to focus on the resident
children and their families. It also allowed
WPS’s staff to connect with
one of the school’s service partners
in a new way and provided a great
way to transition to the new year

“unselfish commitment to municipal
leadership and governance.” The
resolution reads, “Municipal leaders
strive for excellence in the governance
of their city, town or village

members, friends, residents and her
fellow commissioners, Mayor Stark

For the 17th year, Oakland was
named a 2019 Tree City USA by
representatives of the Arbor Day
Foundation in honor of the town’s
commitment to effective urban forest
management. Oakland achieved
this recognition by meeting the program’s
four requirements: a tree
board or department, a tree care
ordinance, an annual community
forestry budget of at least $2 per
capita, and an Arbor Day observance
and proclamation. The town
far exceeds these standards and
also requires developers to replace
trees during construction. In 2019,
staff oversaw the installation of more
than 300 trees throughout the town.
