mayor during a town commission

meeting last month. It recognized her

“unselfish commitment to municipal

leadership and governance.” The

resolution reads, “Municipal leaders

strive for excellence in the governance

of their city, town or village

and commit themselves to providing

quality services, governing effectively

and working to improve the

quality of life.” Surrounded by family

members, friends, residents and her

fellow commissioners, Mayor Stark

accepted the award from Mark

Sittig, League of Cities membership

resources manager.

For the 17th year, Oakland was

named a 2019 Tree City USA by

representatives of the Arbor Day

Foundation in honor of the town’s

commitment to effective urban forest

management. Oakland achieved

this recognition by meeting the program’s

four requirements: a tree

board or department, a tree care

ordinance, an annual community

forestry budget of at least $2 per

capita, and an Arbor Day observance

and proclamation. The town

far exceeds these standards and

also requires developers to replace

trees during construction. In 2019,

staff oversaw the installation of more

than 300 trees throughout the town.
